SMILES NEWSLETTER November 4, 2013 Southeasten Society of Pediatric Dentistry INSIDE THIS ISSUE President’s Message Trustee Report SSPD President E. Gaines Thomas With the holiday season now only weeks away and as we make plans for the new year, make sure you have registered for the SSPD January Annual Meeting in Atlanta at the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead , January 10th, 11th and 12th. The meeting promises to be one of our best ever with five speakers covering cone beam radiography, lasers for hard and soft tissues, and internet marketing….... fifteen hours of great continuing education at a great location. Register now at www.sspd. org . The SSPD executive committee met the first weekend of October in Tampa for a strategic planning session. There was a tropical storm in the Gulf that weekend, but it skipped Tampa and we had delightful October weather. Thank you Leigh Ann and Jim McIlwain for arranging and hosting this very productive meeting and a great time over dinner. One of the issues before the AAPD General Assembly at the Orlando meeting last SOUTHERN 1& 2 2 Jan 2014 Meeting Info 3 &4 January 2014 Meeting Speakers 5&6 Members in the News 7 The Last Word 8 May, was whether or not to continue the policy of requiring tripartite membership in the AAPD, regional, and state pediatric dental organizations. The General Assembly (wisely I think) voted to continue to require membership in all three organizations, and not allow membership in only one or two of the organizations. Dues are very reasonable in all three of the organizations, and I urge all pediatric dentists to be active members in our state, regional and national associations. With the movement toward a nationalized health care system, including pediatric dental care, this is not the time to splinter our specialty into different organizations. We must maintain strong membership levels and continue to be “the big authority on little teeth.” The General Assembly did approve a resolution to change the Academy policy of requiring American Dental Association membership to be a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. The new policy will be to only require ADA membership at the time of the initial application to the AAPD for membership, and not on a continuing annual basis after that. Both of these professional organizations need each other, 1 President’s message continued......... and it is a sign of support for the ADA for our Academy to require ADA membership. I would hope that in the future we would reverse this recent change and reinstate the longstanding policy of requiring membership in both organizations. I have enjoyed serving as SSPD President this year, and look forward to seeing you in Atlanta. E. Gaines Thomas, D.M.D. IMPORTANT CHANGES EFFECTIVE 12/1/2014 THE CENTRAL OFFICE TELEPHONE NUMBER WILL CHANGE: THE NEW NUMBER IS 804-475-9551 DUES COLLECTION YOUR 2014 DUES STATEMENTS WILL BE MAILED TO YOU FROM THE SSPD CENTRAL OFFICE IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF WEEKS. It has been a busy time at AAPD headquarters. The 4th cohort of Leadership Institute begins in December at Kellogg School of Management. It is a 3 year program that teaches many leadership skills. Please let me know if you are interested or have any questions. It is a good experience that will help in your practice and in every business situation. The Academy held a successful conference in September on “The Impact of the Affordable Care Act” on the Pediatric Dental Practice”. The presentations are posted on the AAPD website for members only. Shopping for healthcare benefits began on October 1,2013 and has been a difficult process. There has been a lot of confusion for patients and dental practices. There are webinars planned in the future to help dentists understand the ACA implementation. We are going to need to educate our staff so they are prepared to help families understand the various options available for pediatric dental coverage and impact that their choice of plans will have on their out of pocket expenses. There will be another Lobby Day in Washington, DC on March 3-4,2014. If you are interested in attending please let me know. It’s a good experience meeting with our congressmen and their staff. 2 The Ad Council campaign continues to gain momentum. It has been very successful. There is some investigation on how we can share this message in smaller markets so all our members benefit. Remember that our 2014 annual session will be in Boston. It is such a fun, historic city. There will be another “give back” day, where we provide dental care to local children in need. In Massachusetts a temporary dental license can be obtained. Please sign up to help. Our welcome reception will move to Friday night this year where we will gather at the World Series winning Boston Red Sox Fenway Park!!!!!! This will be a great party. Over the last seven years I have worked to develop a device that would overcome all of the inherent problems associated with nasal intubation. The Rhinoguard will all but eliminate nasopharyngeal tunneling/ dissection and lacerations as well as making the procedure much faster and giving the operator a better ability to utilize a larger endotracheal tube if desired. Here are some milestones for the Rhinoguard: 1. Davis Medical is a collaborator with the Pediatric Medical Device Institute ( Pediatricmedicaldevices.org ) which is under the auspices of the Virginia Tech/Carilion School of Medicine and VT School of Engineering. 2. The Rhinoguard was the Finalist for the Invention of the Year at the 2012 University of Michigan Global Summit for Pediatric Medical Device Innovation. 3. The Rhinoguard is recognized under the U.S. Congressional mandate for needed pediatric medical devices, such that the FDA regulatory process is carried out in a timely manner. 4. I was granted a U.S. patent for the Rhinoguard, and have another U.S. patent pending, as well as a European pat pending and a Canadian pat pending. 5. I have attended three national anesthesia meetings as an exhibitor with the Rhinoguard. 6. The Rhinoguard has passed all testing and we will soon be filing the 510K with the FDA so as to be cleared to sell. We should be compliant in early 2014. The U.S. distributor for the Rhinoguard is Palmetto Device ( Palmettodevice.com ). The members' anesthesia professionals can contact them at info@palmettodevice.com or me personally at jdavis@betternasalintubation.com My website has a demo video along with the instructions for use as well as a downloadable brochure pdf The web address is:www.Betternasalintubation.com In Memory Dr. Thomas Prosser Dr. Thomas Edward Prosser, IV, age 66, of Marietta, GA passed away September 6, 2013. Funeral Mass for Dr. Thomas Edward Prosser, IV wase celebrated Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013 at 10:00 AM. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marietta, GA. 7 In lieu of flowers the family would suggest donations in Thomas' memory to The American Cancer Society, 1825 Barrett Lakes Blvd, Suite 280, Kennesaw, GA 30144 or to Emory Autism Resource Center, 1551 Shoup Court, Atlanta, GA 30322 Phone (404)727-8350. THE LAST WORD Howard Schneider A Big Man I’m sure you have walked down the street and said, “that is a Big Man!” Maybe you were in a car and noticed a very large man driving next to you. We all have seen him. But, that is not what I am really writing about. I mean a person you know, who is a big man. Yes! He is a member of our society. Through the many years, he has been in the background, giving of his time and talent, seeing that the SSPD does the many things to make it run smoothly. As life moves on, there came a time for him to pass the torch to the next generation. So, for the many, many years he has given his time, talent and dedication to the organization as well as mentorship to the many residents, it’s now time to honor this Big Man by contributing to the Frank H. Farrington Service and Leadership Award. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------2013 Officers and Board Members Executive Committee State E-mail addresses President: E.
