Sheep(ish) Gun Metal(ish) 0002; Lime(ish) 0021 CROCHET HOOK: One size F (3.75 mm) ADDITIONAL MATERIALS: Yarn needle GAUGE: In dc, 4 ½ sts and 2 rows = 1 in./2.5 cm. HAT PATTERN Sides: Work in rows, using Gun Metal(ish) color Make a slip knot. Ch 20 Row 1: Starting in 5th ch st from hook, dc 1 tbl in each st – 17 sts Row 2 – 36: Ch 3, insert hook in 5th st from hook, dc 1 tbl in each st These rows will create a flat rectangular piece of 36 rows of ribbed bar sts. Fold in half, matching up short ends. Leave yarn attached to crochet crown of hat. Crown: Work in rounds, using Gun Metal(ish) color Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc 54 evenly around entire edge of hat ring. NOTE: For the foll rnds, do not count the beg Ch 3 as a st) Rnd 2: Ch 3, *dc 4 tbl, dc2tog tbl*, close rnd with sl st to top of beg ch 3 – 45 sts Rnd 3: Ch 3, *dc 1, dc2tog*, close rnd with sl st to top of beg ch 3 – 30 sts Rnd 4: Ch 3, *dc 1, dc2tog*, close rnd with sl st to top of beg ch 3 – 20 sts Rnd 5: Ch 3, *dc2tog*, close rnd with sl st to top of beg ch 3 – 10 sts Cut yarn, leaving a tail of 8 inches, and tie a knot. Thread yarn needle and weave yarn tail through outside loop of each st; pull tightly to close top of hat. Bring yarn to inside of hat and tie knot. Weave tail through a few sts inside hat to hide, cut. Visor: Work in rows, using Gun Metal(ish) color Make a slip knot. Find the 12 rows of ribbed bar sts centered on the hat front; begin crocheting on the left most point with hat front facing you. NOTE: When you see 2dc, make an increase by making 2 dc in the same st. Row 1: Sc 20 evenly across the 12 rows of ribbed bar sts. Row 2: Ch 1, sc 1, hdc 1, *2dc (in same st: this creates an increase), dc 1* (twice), 2dc, dc 6, *2dc, dc 1* (twice), 2dc, hdc 1, sc 1 Row 3: Ch 1, sc 1, hdc 1, 2dc, *dc 1, 2dc*, rep until final two sts, hdc 1, sc 1 Sl st until reaching point where Row 1 of visor meets hat bottom edge. Sc around entire bottom edge of hat, cont around edge of visor. Use a sl st to conn final sc st to first sc st. Cut yarn, leaving a tail of 6 inches, and tie a knot. Thread yarn needle and weave tail through sts on inside of hat to hide. Strap: Work in rounds, using Lime(ish) color Make a slip knot. Ch 34 Rnd 1: 2dc in 3rd ch from hook; dc 1 across rem ch sts, until reaching final st: dc 4 in final ch st. Cont by working around to the opposite side of the original chain. 2dc in first ch, dc 1 across rem ch sts, sl st to top of first dc. Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, 2 sc in 2nd st, sc in each st along flat side of strap. Make 2 sc in each of the 4 sts that make up the curved end of the strap. Sc in each st on other flat side of strap, until reaching last 2 sts. 2 sc in each of these last 2 sts, use a sl st to conn to 1st sc of rnd 2. Buttons (make two): Work in rounds, using Gun Metal(ish) color Make a slip knot. Ch 3, use sl st to conn 3rd to 1st ch st, to make a ring Rnd 1: Ch 2, hdc 7 in center of ring; sl st to conn to top of ch 2 – 8 sts Rnd 2: Ch 2, 2hdc in each st; sl st to conn to top of ch 2 – 16 sts Rnd 3: Sl st in each st; sl st to conn to 1st sl st Cut yarn, leaving a tail of 8 inches, and tie knot. Thread yarn needle and weave yarn through outside loop of each st. Pull tightly to close and tie knot. Place button on curved end of strap, and place on side of hat, above left edge of visor, with hat front facing you. Using yarn needle, sew through all layers (button, strap, and Toddler Cadet Cap - crochet pattern by Cheryl Cambras cherylcambras@yahoo.com hat) to securely attach. Do the same with the second button for the right end of strap, placing it above the right edge of visor. Tie knot and weave tail through sts on inside of hat to hide.
