NEW SCHOOL 1935-40 FORD CHASSIS

Remembering way back, when no aftermarket hot rod suspension parts were known, stock parts were home-modified to gain just the smallest of handling and safety upgrades; or were they really upgrades? Along with real innovations, good theories were also followed up by bad techniques in metal forming. Memorable problems surfaced while driving our home-builts, as many chassis parts had been torched and bent to theoretically improve their functions. Not all of them were safe. Not good. Today the Drake Team is building hot rods using the best bolt-on suspension parts engineered with old school quality, tailor-made to fit early Ford cars and pickups. We’re forging ahead with new car building systems by offering a range of new parts that make for a safe, unmatched ride. Best of all, these bolt-on parts are a snap to install. These & Thousands More Early Ford & Hot Rod Parts are in this catalog! 26 We know that not everyone is experienced in MIG or TIG welding, as welding is rarely done these days in home garages. But, if you don’t own a drill and wrenches, you may want to skip this guide. There’s a new approach to joining the structural parts of the early Ford frame and chassis: We call it our No Weld—Easy Bolt-On™ method. We’ve applied this method to our 1935-40 frame, the foundation of our Project ’40. In the following pages, you’ll see our road-tested bolt-on parts. So, just visualize how you can build a great hot rod the easy, no-weld, Drake way. Bob started his Project ’40 build with an original frame from a 1940 Ford Fordor Sedan that had a V8-60 engine. Notice the engine mounts and the fender yoke. Bob said it would be “sacrilegious” to install a non-Ford engine. He chose the new 340-horsepower Ford Boss 302 with GT-40 heads, and a Ford C-5 auto transmission turning a Ford 9" rear end. We kept the stock rear cross bar and cross member Shown is the actual original chassis used on Drake’s Steel ’40 display car First, you remove these parts: Steering box stiffener X member (four pieces) To prep the frame for the new power plant and drive train, it was first necessary to remove some of the original structural parts at left. Rear engine mount Front cross member 28 Important: Before cutting and removing Radiator mounts the front cross member, stabilize the front of the frame by bolting or welding on a support brace. They bolt to the top of the frame rail and attach to the aprons using the original hole locations. HR-16138 $45.00 pair www.bobdrake.com 29 1935-40 Bolt-On I.F.S. Independent Front FORD CHASSIS Cars & Pickups Suspension Why Go with Easy Bolt-Ons? Building your front suspension network using bolt-on components offers easy, more exact fine-tuning and you don’t need to be a certified welder to put it all together. Bob’s done the research and selected the best components, all very affordable to get the job done right. 1 Independent front Suspension kit Note: For Project ’40, we chose the 350 pounds/inch coil springs. • Cross member • Upper control arm mounts • Strut rod mounts • All needed hardware 3 IF-3540FP $625.00 complete kit (without engine mounts) IF-3540FPCM $720.00 complete kit (with SB Chevy engine mounts) 2 Coil Springs 2 1 14 Project ‘40: 350 lbs. / Inch (FS-8350) Others available in 25 lb. increments from 250-375 lbs.
