Narrator: In Girl Scouting we have one Law with ten parts.
What are KARAT KARDS?
KARAT stands for Keep Adults Returning All the Time!
This tool is designed for leaders to collect the 4x6 “kards” and put them
in a troop resource box for girls and adults to use for program ideas.
Subjects will range from songs, games, service projects, recognitions, to
ceremonies, skits, recipes, openings and closings.
How do you get them? Attend your service
unit meetings! You may find the past 4 years
of KARAT Kards in Leader Resource under
the General tab under Meeting Tips. Enjoy!!
I will do my best to be honest and fair (3 girls enter with each holding a glass and one
holding a opened soda. She pours a little into each glass making sure they are equal and
says “Now let’s be as fair as we can about this”)
I will do my best to be friendly and helpful (A Brownie enters with a lop-sided cake
and proudly announces that she helped her mother make this lovely cake. Mother enters
with flour all over her and her hair is a mess and a general disheveled appearance)
I will do my best to be considerate and caring (2 girls appear in archway and take turns
saying “You go first – No you go first”. Repeat about 4 times then both crowd through
archway together)
I will do my best to be courageous and strong (2 girls enter, one wielding a whip and a
chair, like she is taming a lion, the other lifting a “heavy” object over her head)
I will do my best to be responsible for what I say and do (1 or 2 girls enter carrying
stuffed “pets”, pretending that they are real. They are feeding, watering, brushing and
walking them. They also talk to them lovingly.)

Happy Birthday Daisy
Did you know that Juliette Gordon Low was born on October 31, 1860? She will
be 150 years old on her birthday in 2010. How will you celebrate her special day in
your troop? Here are some suggestions…
• Read about her life from a Brownie or Junior Handbook and have a cake. Don’t
forget to sing Happy Birthday!
• The Lady from Savannah may be an interesting read for Girl Scout Juniors,
Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors.
• Plan a tea party with everyone dressing up including white gloves (just like
Juliette). Oh, don’t forget your pearls!
• Have a Bring a Friend party to honor her starting Girl Scouts.
• Invite Senior Citizens to tell you about what it was like when they were little
girls.
• Have a birthday party and view The Golden Eaglet.
Tip: “The Golden Eaglet” DVD is available for check out by Girl Scouts from the Council Library,
located in the Girl Scout Shop in the Program Place for Girls on the Girl Scout Campus, 3000
Southwest Freeway. The library hours are the same as the Girl Scout Shop hours, closed Sundays.

I will do my best to respect myself and others (3 girls enter, each holding a small hand
mirror. Looking into the mirror, they say to themselves “I respect you, I respect you, I
respect you”. They then turn to each other and repeat the same thing.)
I will do my best to respect authority (3 girls and an older Girl Scout – the girls form a
straight line. The older girl gives orders such as “About face”, “Left face”, “Right
face”. Each girl turns in opposite direction for general confusion)
I will do my best to use resources wisely (A Girl Scout dressed VERY outlandishly
such as purple socks, green skirt, blue blouse, etc. with everything fitting very poorly.
She says: My mother sent me shopping, now wasn’t that very nice I got all these lovely
bargains at half their normal price?)
I will do my best to make the world a better place (Some girls enter with pet rocks and
potted plants. One shows others the new house she just made for her pet rock. Others
talk to their plants, etc.)
I will do my best to be a sister to every Girl Scout (2 girls enter wearing outfits with the
sleeves and skirts sewn together. They then say – in unison – “some people say sisters
argue. I’m sure this you’ve heard. But the thing that describes us best, you’ll find,
inseparables the word.”

Get Acquainted Game: Sentence From a Name
This is a project all new Girl Scouts in the Daisy and Brownie levels would
love to do that will help them practice and learn the Girl Scout Promise.
Have everyone pair up with someone they don't know. Each person
writes her first name on a piece of paper and exchanges it with her
partner. After a minute or two getting to know each other, each person
makes up a sentence with words starting with the letter of the other
person's name. For example: Melissa: Moths Eat Lettuce In South San
Antonio.
What you will need:
 Pattern for Girl Scout Promise (see pattern)

 Green Paper
 Ivory, Brown or Tan Paper
 Yellow Card Stock
 Glue
 Scissors

on Ivory, Brown or Tan Paper. Cut them out. Glue onto half sheet Yellow
Card Stock, bending and gluing down the pinky and thumb.

Leader – The red color of Carnelian is associated with these traits
In 1912, some girls they met.
And had tea with Juliette
Girl Scouts she came here to start
And I thank her from my heart.

Leader – Mother of pearl to remind one to speak with pearls of wisdom
Girl #6 – Respect myself and others
Leader – The pure clarity of quartz as a reminder that all people matter
The Girl Scout Law in Jewels Ceremony
Facts about Girl Scout Badges
Badges are not going away! However, there will be some changes coming in
the near future.
 Brownie Try-Its, Junior Badges and Cadette/Senior/Ambassador Interest
Project Patches will all be called – BADGES. Brownie badges will be
triangle shape and Junior badges will be round. It is yet to be determined
what shapes the badges for Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors will be.
 Daisy Learning Petals and the Promise Center will continue to be known as
Learning Petals and the Promise Center, but there will be new suggested
activities on how to earn them.
 Some badges will be retired and some will be revamped and reissued.
GSUSA has announced coming the Summer of 2011 the Girl’s Guide to Girl
Scouting for each program level of Girl Scouting. This publication will be the
girl’s handbook with seven “Classic” badges, and information on the cookie
program.

Tips: 1) These beads may be added to a jar, strung on a necklace or added to a treasure
chest as each one is read. 2) Present a beaded bracelet to each girl after reading their
part. 3) Semi-precious stones may be found in the form of powerbead
bracelets/necklaces. 4) Also easy to substitute different stones (ie. Malachite for
aventurine)

Mary ran off as she was told
Found the pond, made the turns, spoke very bold.
The missing word seemed so hard to get,
For all she saw was her own silhouette.
Back to the owl she went very fast
And he helped her to understand at last.
In a moment she knew how the rhyme should go.
And she spoke the words that we all know.
(Girls stand up, form circle close to mirror and repeat together.)
Twist me and turn me and show me the elf
I looked in the mirror and saw... myself.
This tale is told of Tom and Mary,
Who lived in a hut which was not so merry.
A poor tailor by trade was their papa,
And the untidy house was kept by Grandma.
Nothing was clean or polished or swept;
Tom and Mary were dirty and very unkempt,
Careless and lazy, but busy at play,
Never thinking to help in the smallest way.
Then one day Gran told them a storyShe thought it might make them feel sorry.
"I'll tell you of brownies who used to live here,
But they moved away for good, I fear."
"How many kind things they did in a day
Was rather hard to tell, in a way,
For they worked very quietly and never were seen,
But the chores were all done and the house was so clean."

The children thought what fun it would be
To have a few brownies who'd work for free.
That would leave them the live-long day
For fun and a chance to do nothing but play.
So Granny told them to see the owl
And not to worry if he should scowl.
They could listen to his advice,
And find some brownies, that would be nice.
That night Mary crept out into the dark,
And it sure didn't seem like such a lark.
She was scared but then heard the old owl hoot
And she followed the sound in hot pursuit.
"Please Mr. Owl, I've come a long way
Help me, I'll do whatever you say.
A brownie I simply have to find,
So tell me what is in your mind."

The old owl laughed and said quite plain,
"Go down to the pond at the end of the lane
Back at the house Mary told Tom her plan.
A surprise was in order for Papa and Gran.
Next morning a change had sure taken place,
And smiles were seen on everyone's face.
For the table was set and breakfast was ready,
The whole place was bright as a shiny new penny
"The brownies are back," said Mary, "to stay.
This time we know they won't go away."

"Brownies we are and brownies we'll stay,
Keeping our Promise in every way."

Supplies:
Daisy Girl Scout pins for new members (place on a ribbon with a safety pin for
easy pinning on girls)
Poster paper – yellow and white
Tape
Directions:
Cut out a daisy flower (yellow center, white petals – 8 petals, one for each part)
Back each piece with a rolled piece of tape
Practice the ceremony with the girls!
LEADER: You are about to become Daisy Girl Scouts. Together we will
explore all the fun and adventure of Girl Scouting. Let's look at some of the
things we might do.
Daisy #1: (place daisy center on poster paper) The woman who started Girl
Scouts was Juliette Gordon Low. Her nickname was "Daisy." We are named
after her. Together we will learn more about Girl Scouting.

Daisy #7: (place sixth petal) The Girl Scout Promise tells us to help
others.
Daisy #8: (place seventh petal) The Girl Scout Law tells us how to be
good to each other and our world.
Daisy #9: (place eighth petal) Most important we will have fun.
Note to leaders: At this time, all girls make the Girl Scout sign and
repeat the Promise. Call each girl forward and place her membership pin on
her clothing upside down. Explain that the pin is upside down because she
should go home and do three good turns ... one for each part of the Promise.
When completed, her parent or guardian can turn the pin right side up. Note
that you hope to see all the pins turned over by the next meeting. (Discuss
the meaning of good turns with the girls prior to the ceremony). Note:
putting the pins on upside down is an optional activity.

How to Make a Cheesecloth Ghost
A cheesecloth ghost makes an easy and inexpensive fun craft project for the girls on a
cool afternoon.
Materials needed:
Aluminum Foil
Large Mixing Bowl
Stirring Spoon
Cheesecloth
Quart Jars
2 cups warm water
1 cup Granulated Sugar
Scissors
Instructions:
1. Drape heavy-duty foil over a quart jar to make a ghost form.
2. Mix 2 cups warm water and 1 cup granulated sugar in mixing bowl until the sugar is
completely dissolved.
3. Measure the length of cheesecloth needed by draping the dry cloth over the form and
cutting.
4. Use this piece to measure and cut three more pieces of cheesecloth the same size.
5. Soak the cloth pieces in the sugar mixture.
6. Squeeze excess water out of the cloth.
7. Drape the cheesecloth over the ghost form, and keep layering until you use all the
pieces.
8. Dry the "ghost" for 24 hours or until it's completely dry.
9. Remove from the form and decorate if desired.

Instructions
1. Cut a circle from the seamless side of a lunch-size paper bag. Use the
cutout circle as a guide to cut a slightly larger circle from white or
yellow tissue paper.
2. Cut skinny triangles of red, orange, and yellow tissue paper for the
feathers, and cut two wing shapes from red tissue paper. Use a glue stick
to affix the feathers and wings onto the tissue paper circle.
3. Cut a turkey body (you can download our template) from the brown
paper circle, then glue it to the center of the tissue paper collage.
4. Line the edge of the bag's circular hole with more glue, then lay the
collage circle on top. Fill the bag with about an inch of sand or rocks and
nestle an LED tea light inside.

A little history: Before troops (originally called patrols) had numbers,
they were identified by crest. The first crests used in Savannah, GA were
White Rose and Carnation, followed by Red Rose and Poppy. By 1917,
there were 29 crests: Bluebell, Buttercup, Clematis, Crocus, Daffodil,
Daisy, Dogwood, Forget-me-not, Fuchsia, Goldenrod, Holly, Iris, Lilly of
the Valley, Morning Glory, Narcissus, Nasturtium, Oak, Pansy, Pink
Carnation, Poppy, Red Clover, Red Rose, Scarlet Pimpernel, Star of
Bethlehem, Sunflower, Thistle, Violet, White Rose, and White Violet.
Find the Leader
With at least 4 players, try to guess who leads the group. One layer, the
guesser, goes away while remaining players get in a circle and select a
leader. Leader initiates series of motions (claps, stomps, so on) other
players copy. Guesser is called back to watch group. Leader must change
movements every 5 – 20 seconds. Followers try not to give away leader
with their eyes. Guesser gets 3 tries to identify leader.
Bluebird- known for its song and bright color, at home in the city or in
the wild
Cardinal- known for its whistle "Good Cheer!"
Clover Leaf- good luck, also the shape of the Girl Scout trefoil
Daffodil- spring flower, sunny personality
Dogwood- new life, rebirth, a spring flowering tree
Falling Star- good luck, makes wishes come true
Forget-Me-Not- friendship and loyalty

Pansy- also known as "hearts-ease" stands for service and friendship
Purple Violet- a clean environment and a clean earth.
Red Rose- the "All American" flower, symbol of beauty

Star of Bethlehem- a guide, a goal, it shows the way
Unicorn- chastity, purity, imagination, uniqueness
Waterfall- loyalty and challenge

in strength, and exploring possibilities.

Just a Bean!
Leader: Using a package of dried pinto beans, provide each girl one
bean. Encourage the girls to look at their bean, smell it and feel it. Give
these instructions in a way that encourages the girls to really get to know
their bean. Ask leading questions what makes our bean different than any
other? Is there a mark or other distinguishing feature that sets it apart?
Ask the girls to lace all their beans in one can and shake them up. Ask
the girls if they can recognize their bean and pick it out of a crowd.
Then, use the snack baggie with a wet paper towel and the beans inside,
have her write her name in the corner of the bag. When the sun comes
out she can set it in the sun and watch the beans sprout and grow.

Sweet Turkey Cupcakes
Ingredients
• Cupcake
• Chocolate frosting
• 3 oval shortbread cookies (we used Keebler Sandies Right Bites Shortbread)
• 6 to 10 candy corn pieces
• White icing
• Black decorators' gel
• Red fruit leather (we used strawberry Fruit by the Foot)
Instructions
1. Frost the cupcake, then press in a cookie head and 2 cookie wings.
2. Press in a row or two of candy corn tail feathers.
3. To make an eye, add a small dot of white icing to the head, then add a dot of
black decorators' gel for a pupil.
4. For a beak, cut the white tip from a piece of candy corn and press it in place.
5. To make the wattle, cut a 1-inch square of fruit leather. Roll it into a tube and
stick it in place over the beak
Tortilla Melts
Ingredients (per tortilla):
a 6 in. soft flour tortilla
various bits of chocolate, caramels, and marshmallows
banana & apple slices
Directions: Take a piece of foil and make a 'plate' for the tortilla. Place
tortilla on it. Next place your choice of toppings. Fold the tortilla in half
and wrap in the foil. Heat in the campfire coals (or on a grill, or on a
vagabond stove) for about 5 minutes on each side. You'll know they're
done when you when you smell the chocolate! Be sure to let them cool a
little before you eat them or you'll burn your tongue.
Note: Beware! Once you taste these you may never go back to S’Mores!
Fabric Angels

What you'll need:
 Fabric of any color or design
 Two different size circles to trace around
 Thread
 Lace
 Ribbon
 Foil garland or pearl strings
 Hot glue
 Sewing machine or needle and thread
 Cotton balls or stuffing
How to make it:
1. Using two different size circles (use a plate and a cereal bowl), cut one
circle of each size from fabric for each angel. The larger circle is the
body and the smaller circle the wings.
2. Sew lace around each circle.
Magical Holiday Brownies

Homemade brownie mix that can be jarred and given as a sweet holiday
gift!
Ingredients
1/2 teaspoon each salt and baking powder
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, divided
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 1/3 cups granulated sugar, divided
3/4 cup each semi-sweet chocolate morsels
and white chocolate baking chips
1/2 cup Fisher Walnut Halves and Pieces, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup water
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• Put a cotton ball or small amount of stuffing in the middle of the large
circle. Using a piece of thread, tie the material to make a head.
• Take the smaller circle, and tie tight a piece of thread in the middle to
form wings. (This will make two fan shapes for the wings.) Tie the wings
around neck of the body.
• Take a piece of ribbon, and tie it around the neck to hide the thread.
Make it into a bow.
• Glue a halo, using pearls or garland, onto the head.
• Sew a small loop of thread to the back of the angel to hang her by.
• Enjoy.
Magical Holiday Brownies

Directions
In bowl layer dry ingredients evenly as follows; salt, baking powder, 1/2
cup flour, cocoa powder, 2/3 cup sugar, chocolate morsels, 1 cup flour,
2/3 sugar, white chocolate chips and walnuts. Cover container with lid
and attach these instructions. Combine contents in container with 1/2 cup
vegetable oil, 1/4 cup water, 3 eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Mix

Every January 24th is Compliment Day. This is a great opportunity to say
something positive about the people you come into contact with. Everyone has
good attributes...that's right...everyone.
Friends are friends because you see something good about them. Here's an easy
compliment to a friend: "Wow, you're very intelligent...you choose your friends
wisely".
It's more challenging to compliment people you don't like. Take up the
challenge, and find a compliment for them today, too.
Compliment Day is celebrated by offering sincere compliments to people you
know. It is important that you are sincere. People will see right through
insincerity, and you will do more harm than good.
How many compliments should you give out today? The common suggestion is
five compliments. Yes, they should be to five different people.

Divide the group into small groups - about four girls per group works
best. Each group gets:
1 pie plate/bowl/basin/etc. of water (the "ocean")
1 cup with a small amount of dish detergent
1 empty cup
1-2 paper napkins (serviettes)
1-2 small sponges
1-2 drinking straws
A leader pours an "oil spill" (darkly colored oil, e.g. olive oil, looks best)
onto each group's "ocean". The group's task is to clean up the spill. For
older girls, you can have leaders be "weather" (blowing through a straw
= wind, a water gun = rain), interfering with the girls' progress. After a
set period of time, have the girls get together to discuss what did or didn't
work for them. It gives them a whole new understanding of how
difficult it really is to clean up an oil spill.
Rabbit Without a House

This Brazilian game is best when you have at least 11 people.
Pick someone to be "it" (the rabbit without a house) and someone to be
the caller. Divide the others into groups of three. Each group makes a
rabbit in a house by two girls holding hands (the house) and one girl (a
rabbit) standing inside. The caller yells out "Find a house" and all the
rabbits, including the one without a house, have to run to find another
house. The rabbit left without a house becomes it.

Tips:
Choose your marker. Number markers can be holiday candy, punched
circles from cardstock, flat buttons, or any small item that you have a
multitude of. Here we used conversation heart candies and round craft
jewels.
Prize ideas. Though certainly not necessary, you can offer prizes such as
stickers, small wrapped candies, or colorful erasers. Or, instead of prizes,
offer the winner to draw the numbers for the next game!
Fun game strategies. Variations of bingo include matching all the numbers
within a row or column either diagonally or straight across. Blackout is a
longer version of Bingo where all numbers on the board must have a
marker. This can take much longer and is not recommended for children 6
or under due to shortened attention spans.
Some more creative variations of this game can include covering all
numbers that border the card, creating what looks like a picture frame when
complete. Three way is another, more challenging option, where players
must cover both diagonal lines (looks like an “X”) and the center row in
order to win.

How to make it:
1. Print a page from:

3. If desired, cover with Con-Tact paper or laminate to be able to reuse
the cards again next year.
4. Print a page of BINGO numbers. HINT: Print off on cardstock or
glue to cardboard to give the numbers stability.
5. Cut the numbers apart on the lines.
6. Place the numbers in a bowl.
7. Give each child a BINGO card and a handful of markers (see tips).
8. Reach into the bowl, call out a number and the children place a
marker on the number if it appears on their card.
9. Play the game just like regular BINGO. Play for 5 in a row across,
down, diagonally, or even play blackout by covering all the numbers
on the card.

Who gets more out of a random act of kindness – the giver or the
recipient? It’s hard to say. Whether they’re sharing high fives, songs or
smiles, these kind-doers prove that sharing kindness is pretty sweet.
Here are some suggestions for your “Random Acts of Kindness” or you
can think of your own.






Clean up graffiti in your neighbourhood or one near by
Hold the door for others
Encourage someone with words, a hug, phone call or e-mail
Take a moment to speak to the sales clerk/checker at the store

Daisy Bridging Ceremony

The Daisy level bridging ceremony should be simple and fun for the girls.
Include an opening flag ceremony and the Girl Scout Promise. The Girl
Scout Law may also be incorporated in the ceremony or simply posted on
a wall. If possible, invite a Brownie troop to the ceremony. The Brownies
can form a Brownie Ring on one side of the bridge or room, and welcome
the new girls into the ring. Read the following poem and present the girls
with their membership star, bridging certificate (available for purchase in
the Girl Scout Shop) and bridge to Brownie patch (if earned). End the
ceremony with a song.

The World Thinking Day theme for 2011 is MDG 3: girls worldwide say
“empowering girls will change our world” and the aim is to raise awareness
of the situation for many girls and young women and empower them to take a

Game: Octopus
Object: To avoid being caught by the “octopus.”
Directions: One player is the “octopus” who swims around in the ocean
and tries to catch all the other players, who are “fish.” When the octopus
yells, “Cross!” the fish have to try to cross the ocean without getting
tagged by the octopus. If they are tagged, they become the octopus’s
“tentacles” and help her catch the remaining fish. The tentacles can be
instructed to be stationary and only move their arms to tag the fish, or
they can swim around freely like the octopus for an event more active
game.

We all hope for sunny days during our camping trips, but let's face it,
often we get at least one rainy day. It doesn't have to be a gloomy
experience if you take along a Rainy Day Camping Kit.
You will need:
• Plastic Tub-at least large enough to lay notebook or construction paper,
and tall enough to hold all of your items.
• Crayons, colored pencils, markers and #2 pencils - place these in a
resealable bag to lay fairly flat in the tub.
• An inexpensive activity/coloring book for each child or pages you
have printed out or copied and placed in an inexpensive folder.
• Paper: white, colored, Sunday Comics, old magazines or any
interesting paper that can be drawn on and cut up for the pictures or
designs.
• Scissors,glue, tape and mini stapler

• Pieces of cardboard. You can save the backs and fronts of cereal boxes or
other products that are blank on the inside.
• A new/used book for each child and be sure to include a book or two to read
aloud.
• Left over craft material for the girls to make “secret pal” gifts
• Optional: card games, small notebooks for writing or sketching, travel bingo,
a song book or a board game that can be adapted for everyone with help, such
as Scrabble. (take it out of the box and use plastic bags for the pieces it will
take up less room or buy travel versions.)
Pizzazzy Pizza Snack
Avoid things like glitter or paint, or extra messy items.
Directions:
Grate mozzarella cheese into a bowl, set aside. Squirt pizza sauce
onto muffin Place 4 pepperoni slices on muffin. Cover with cheese.
Place onto a cookie sheet Bake at 350o until cheese is melted.
If packed well your items should fit into a medium sized plastic tub. Not only
won't your Rainy Day be gloomy, but it will be a campout the girls will always
remember!

A Girl Scout Brownie "flies up" to Girl Scout Juniors in the spring, and receives her
Brownie Wings. If possible, have your fly-up ceremony with a Junior troop in your
Service Unit. Often all age groups of Girl Scouts are involved, including the parents.

 Membership Stars and green disc (if you plan to present them now)
 Brown construction paper, cut to represent stones, or paper bags cut the same
way. Write a Girl Scout Law on each one.

The Girl Scout Brownies sit on one side of the room in a Brownie Ring, and the
Girl Scout Juniors sit in a horseshoe (always make the open end toward the
audience) on the other side of the room. Place your Stepping Stones between the
two groups and tape them down to the floor. (Important to guard against
slipping.)

Have the Brownies and Juniors face one another, and walk forward to the stepping
stone with the first Girl Scout Law printed on it and have the two girls say the Law.
Now the next pair of girls come and stand on Law #2; continue until all the Laws

single girls instead of in pairs.

 T-shirt, washed and dried without fabric softener
 Green fabric paint OR green acrylic paint and textile medium
 Gold glitter fabric paint
 3-D neon green fabric paint
 Cutting board or cookie sheet

 Heart-shaped foam stamp
How to make it:
1. If using acrylic paint, mix with textile medium according to
directions on the back of the textile medium bottle.
2. Place cutting board inside the t-shirt and then place a piece of wax
paper between the cutting board and shirt.
3. Position the cutting board where you want it.
4. Tuck the sleeves, sides and bottom of the shirt underneath the
cutting board.
Instructions
1. Open paper bag and place bacon strips on bottom.
2. Toss in potatoes.
3. Break in egg(s).

4. Close by folding down top of paper bag at least three times but
leaving 3"-4" of air space above the food.
5. Insert pointed stick only through the top folded part of the bag.
6. Prop with rocks, or hold bag on the stick about 4"-5" over the hot
coals for about 8-10 minutes (careful not to touch the coals or hold
over flames or you'll set your breakfast on fire.)
7. When you can't stand the delicious aroma anymore and your nose is
making your tummy SCREAM.....
8. Remove from heat and pull out the stick with an oven mitt.
9. Open the bag and fold down the paper. Eat right out of the brown
bag.
10. Throw your "dishes" in the fire (but don't forget to save the forks.)
Comment: It's good to have Adults supervise folding the bags and
inserting the sticks so there's no mistakes.

5. Paint the heart foam stamp with a
generous amount of green paint.
6. Press the painted heart stamp onto
the shirt, and then carefully lift
away.
7. Create shamrocks positioning three
or four hearts together; they should meet at the heart points. Draw
a stem to complete the shamrock.
8. When you are finished adding shamrocks to your shirt, allow the
green paint to dry for about half an hour.
9. Use gold glitter fabric paint to add a gold glow around the
shamrocks, spread with a paintbrush or your finger.

10. Pipe 3-D fabric paint around the border of the shamrocks.
11. Carefully lift the entire cutting board and shirt and move it to a quiet
spot where it will remain undisturbed so it can dry overnight (or at least
6 hours).
Tips: In craft supply stores, fabric paint is
usually in a separate section from the regular
craft paint. Look for a section specifically
geared at painted and embellished clothing.
If you like, add “Kiss Me I’m Irish” or another
fun phrase to your shirt.
Textile medium is available in your local craft store, usually by the craft
paint.

Blowing: Emptying eggs lets you save your
creations. An adult should pierce egg at both ends
with a utility knife, widening one hole a bit. Poke a
straightened paper clip through wide hole; stir yolk.
Place new ear syringe in smaller hole; squeeze. Egg
contents will pour out and can be cooked. (Wash
hands well.)
Dye or paint should be fully dry before
beginning. Affix features with white glue (on
crepe paper, use tiny dots of glue); let dry at least
20 minutes. Glue on feet or legs first so egg will
stand. For ears and combs, dab glue on edge of
felt or crepe paper, affix piece, let dry, then fold
up. Add small details like eyes with tempera
paint or a marker.

It's easy to make dye: Cover the work area with
paper towels. In a jar, mix 1 teaspoon vinegar, 20
drops food coloring, and 1 cup warm water.
Submerge the egg (keep it down with a paper cup
containing water). Soak 5 minutes for light colors
and 10 minutes for darker shades. Remove the egg
with tongs. A homemade rack of pins and foam
board makes for even drying and quick cleanup.

These insects are spinning a yarn about how
they came to bee: Glue the end of a strand of
yellow yarn to the tip of a quail egg. Once
dry, coil the yarn around the egg, alternating
yellow and black sections, and gluing as you
go. Glue on the wings and antennae, tucking
between the strands with a toothpick. For
the hive, use a regular egg; the door is cut
from felt. Use poster putty to make the hive
stand up.
This mama and her round little piglet are pretty
in pink touches, fresh out of the carton -- but
not for long! They're headed to a cool puddle of
construction-paper mud as fast as their pipecleaner legs (bent into a V) will carry them. For
the nose, glue on a button (use tape to secure
while glue dries, then gently peel off). To make
the curly tail, run a thumbnail along one side of
plain embroidery floss.

2 sticks butter, softened and cut into chunks
1 cup sugar
2 large eggs, room temperature
2 tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2-1/2 cups all purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
Sugar for sprinkling (optional)
Now you’ll have to chill this before rolling out (normally you can roll
most cookies out between two pieces of clear wrap or two permanent
baking mats which will eliminate any greasing of cookie sheets, and then
refrigerate them before cutting out, but this dough is simply too soft to
do that) and that will take anywhere from 2 to 24 hours.
In a mixing bowl (by hand if you want to be authentic), cream butter and
sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add
milk and vanilla and beat until light and fluffy. Combine flour and
baking powder and gradually add this to creamed mixture.
Bake in preheated 350oF oven for 8-10 minutes (8 for a softer cookie; 10
for a more crisp cookie). Cool on wire racks.
Roll out on a lightly floured surface about ¼” thick. Cut and place on
ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with sugar if you like.
Makes about 4 dozen 2-1/2 “ cookies.

Directions:
Stick star-shaped stickers on the inside of a dark, solid-colored umbrella in the
shape of the Big Dipper (see illustration). Place a sticker to represent Polaris, the
North Star, in the center of the umbrella. Have a friend hold the umbrella above
you. Stand under Polaris and slowly turn yourself counterclockwise. Polaris
appears to stay still as the other stars circle it.
WHY? Your turning represents the Earth’s rotation. Most stars appear to move
as the Earth turns. But Polaris is almost exactly above the North Pole and the
Earth’s axis. Polaris seems to stay still while the other stars seem to be whirling
around it.

Empty 2L plastic bottle with lid
Knife or sharp kitchen scissors
Dirt (plants optional)
Netting (bridal tulle was used in the
picture, but any netting will do, as long as
the bugs can’t get through it)
• Glue, tape will work too, unless you’re planning to collect some really
big, strong bugs!
The Bug Jug

Instructions:
1. With a craft knife or sharp scissors cut an
air hole into your plastic bottle.
2. Add dirt and plants if you wish, into the
bottom of the bottle. You will need the dirt
in the bottom to weigh the bottle down, and
the bugs will like it too!
3. Securely glue on the netting around the air
hole.
4. Now add bugs! Guide your bugs into the jug through the open top
and then seal it up with the lid, and observe!
5. After 2 or 3 days, please release the bugs back into nature.
