INTRODUCTION TO RUSSIAN LACE KNITTING 1 Session $55 Saturday, August 2, 1-5pm Lily Huff, instructor Russian lace looks complex, but it is a simple lace at its core. We will learn the principles of Russian lace shawl construction. A pattern is provided and includes instructions on how to make a scalloped edge. “The curve” pattern teaches how to make a traditional Orenburg triangle look modern. We will spend two hours concentrating on the most common mistakes that happen in knitting and the most efficient ways to fix them. CLASS REGISTRATION KNITTING 2-BEYOND THE BEGINNING 4 Sessions $80 Begins Thursday, June 12, 6-8:30pm Roxana Bartlett, instructor Knit a sweater that fits, feels wonderful and looks great! Choose a pattern from the Knitting 2 Book and we will help you find the right yarn, review techniques and make sure you understand the instructions while you knit your sweater. You must stop by and select your pattern and yarn at least ONE WEEK before the start of class. BEGINNING KNITTING OR DEMONSTRATED ABILITY WITH TEACHER APPROVAL REQUIRED. Many of our classes fill up quickly. To guarantee a space you should pre-register at least one week prior to the beginning of the class. To register for a class we require ½ of the cost of the class at the time of registration. The remainder of the fee is due the day of the first class. We consider your enrollment a commitment to take the class. We order supplies and make a commitment to the teacher based on your registration. Please be sure you can attend the first session before you sign up for a class. The first class session provides the foundation of skills needed for the entire class. Getting comfortable with double pointed needles will be our first goal. We’ll knit some cuffs. Then we’ll explore “magic loop”, working on two needles and other circular needle tricks. RUSSIAN KNITTING TECHNIQUES 1 Session $50 Saturday, June 21, 1-5pm Lily Huff, instructor How do Russians knit? Lace, socks, sweaters, how do they do that? Learn this classic knitting method: fast knitting, easy knitting, so forgiving on your wrists. Russian knitters pick yarn as in continental knitting. ADVANCED KNITTING SKILLS REQUIRED. Spinning 2 will include such varied topics as t.p.i. (twists per inch), use of wool combs, Navajo plying and more. We will cover different techniques to give you more control over the size and twist of the yarn you spin. BEGINNING SPINNING SKILLS REQUIRED. BRING YOUR WHEEL. FIBERS PROVIDED. SPINNING FINE YARNS 1 Day $60 Saturday, July 19, 10-4:30pm Lily Huff, instructor If you always wanted to spin for lace and admired Russian lace shawls, this workshop will be just what you need to gain confidence and skill. You will learn to comb fiber for lace, spin commercial combed top into lace and gossamer yarn, spin, ply and finish yarns for Russian lace and gossamer shawls. You will learn to spin fine wool, alpaca and goat fibers. INTERMEDIATE SPINNING SKILLS REQUIRED. There are also discretionary points based on judge’s likes and dislikes. We will review basics and go through judging cards. Bring some of your own skeins to review. She will bring samples and years of experience to help you learn how to choose the best fleece for your handspun project. Spinners new and old will benefit from her knowledge. ALL SPINNERS WELCOME. PLYING WITH PLEASURE 2 Sessions $65 Thursday, August 14 & 21, 7-9:30pm Maggie Casey, instructor How do you finish your yarn after you’ve spun singles? As much care should go into plying as spinning. Two ply, three ply, Navajo and cabled yarns—how do you choose and why? Is a balanced yarn necessary? We will spin them all and you can decide for yourself. INTERMEDIATE SPINNING SKILLS REQUIRED. WILD AND CRAZY YARNS 1 Day $65 Saturday, August 16, 10-5pm Debi Dodge, instructor Inspired by Jacyee Boggs…these bumps, beehives, halos, coils, cores and encasements are to die for! OMG! These are all wild, wonderful and crazy yarns with the structural integrity you are looking for in your special projects. The samples are the proof of the pudding. BEGINNING SPINNING ON A WHEEL 6 Sessions $150 Begins Thursday, June 12, 7-9:30pm, (No Class July 3) Dye day-Saturday, July 26, 10-3pm Maggie Casey, instructor Spider Woman taught the Navajo women to spin with a spindle made of lightning and turquoise. While we can't provide that kind of equipment, we can continue the tradition. Wool, greasy, clean and commercially processed is our fiber. The last class is an all day natural dye workshop. Women who are pregnant should take the dye class at a later time when they are not pregnant. ALL EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED. PLEASE WEAR OLD CLOTHES. The first class covers warping and weaving and the second class focuses on ideas and design. As part of the fee, students will keep their looms to allow them to finish their weaving. INKLE WEAVING 2 Sessions $65 Saturday, July 26 & August 2, 1-4pm Sally Kuhn, instructor Inkle weaving is simple, portable and fun. Learn the basics of warping and weaving on an inkle loom. WEAVE A SCARF 1 Day $80 Saturday, May 31, 10-5pm Sara Goldenberg-White, instructor If you’ve wanted to try weaving, but haven’t had the time, this all-day class is for you. Using a rigid heddle loom, students will experience all the steps of weaving a scarf from start to finish. By the end of the class, students should have a good idea about what weaving is all about—and go home with a finished project! USE OF OUR RIGID HEDDLE LOOM AND SUPPLIES ARE INCLUDED. WEAVING REVIEW 2 Sessions $50 Tuesday, August 12 & 26, 6-8:30pm Judy Steinkoenig, instructor Dust off your loom and get weaving! WEAVE A CROSSOVER SCARF 2 Sessions $95 Saturday, June 21, 10-4pm & Sunday, June 22, 10-2pm Sally Kuhn, instructor Learn this fascinating technique while weaving a scarf of fabulous Tencel. WEAVE A BAG IN A WEEKEND ON A RIGID HEDDLE LOOM 2 Days $125 Saturday, June 28, 10-5pm & Sunday, June 29, 10-1pm Sara Goldenberg-White, instructor Learn how to do double weave on the rigid heddle loom while creating a fun functional bag. This class will go over how to wind a warp on a warping board and set up your rigid heddle loom for double weave as well as how to weave two layers of cloth at once! If you have your own loom bring it with you, if not one will be provided (we will use 10 dent reeds). PRIOR RIGID HEDDLE WEAVING EXPERIENCE REQUIRED. YARNS PROVIDED. WILD AND CRAZY BIRDIES 2 Sessions $80 Sunday, July 13 & 20, 12noon-4pm Suzanne Connolly Howes, instructor You will create a 3 dimensional sculptured bird combining needle felting and wet felting techniques. In the first class you will make the bird and learn different embellishment techniques that you can work on throughout the week. During the second class you will wet felt to finish the bird sculpture. ALL LEVELS WELCOME. WEAVER CONTROLLED WEAVES 1 Day $60 Sunday, July 13, 10-5pm Judy Steinkoenig, instructor Spend a day at your loom learning finger-manipulated weaves that can enhance any woven piece. FELTED BUNNIES AND OTHER CUTE TINY THINGS 1 Session $45 Monday, August 11, 6:30-9:30pm Heide Murray, instructor Come learn the craft of needle felting in a few short hours. We will create adorable needle felted bunnies (or cats or pigs or dogs) out of basic shapes of needle felted wool. The animals will be more like cartoon characters than real animals, so bring your imagination. ALL LEVELS WELCOME. AGE 9 AND UP. You’ll weave a sample and design and weave a finished piece to take home. Learn basic crochet stitches and how to read patterns. Several small projects will be made, including a hat. (Hat uses worsted weight yarn to be provided by the student.) CHEVRON AND BASKETWEAVE 1 Day $50 Saturday, July 12, 10-3:30pm Sally Kuhn, instructor Ply-splitting, a technique from Northern India, is completely portable. Peter Collingwood and Linda Hendrickson helped introduce this slow and meditative technique to the U.S. We will learn two braids using SCOT (Single-course Oblique Twining), prepared cords and a gripfid-a handy tool. ALL MATERIALS PROVIDED. ALL LEVELS WELCOME. CROCHET TRADITIONS 3 Sessions $65 Begins Monday, June 9, 1-3:30pm Margaret Tullis, instructor Crochet comes in many different forms. It can be dense and warm or lacey and decorative and lots more in between. In this class, we will explore pattern stitches, tapestry color work and Tunisian (afghan) stitch. TEXTILES FROM AROUND THE WORLD 1 Session $25 Saturday, July 12, 1-4pm Chris Switzer, instructor With a world map, we’ll travel the continents. Certain countries are unique for their techniques using knitting, weaving, dyeing, fabric printing and more. Garments, rugs, belts, wall hangings, baskets—the list goes on and on. Participants are asked to bring textiles from their own travels to share. Instructor has items from Peru and the Andes plus Sweden. There will be a special “Show and Tell”. Part of the time will be about looms from around the world. There are surprising differences. Another section will cover “universals”—some tools for fiber artists are unique to one place—others from all over. An anthropology point of view will be discussed: cultural traits, status, identity and specialization. How are we alike and how are we different? ALL LEVELS WELCOME. KUMIHIMO 1 Day $55 Saturday, August 23, 10:30-3pm Sally Kuhn, instructor Kumihimo, the ancient and honored craft of Japanese braiding, a tradition going back to the Middle Ages, is enjoying a revival of interest. ALL BASKET MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED FOR EACH CLASS. Braids are fascinating and beautiful alone. They can also be useful as an STUDENTS SHOULD WEAR OLD CLOTHES AND BRING: SHARP embellishment for handwovens or jewelry. Leading a double life isn’t as difficult as it sounds, she says, since both reflect an aspect of her creativity and both are exciting. Her book SLIP STITCH KNITTING is an Interweave Press best seller. Sally Kuhn - Worked for yarn during high school and college, helping with knitting, crochet and needlepoint projects. An avid weaver since 1994, you can see her work in HANDWOVEN. Kumihimo and ply split braiding are also addictions. Maggie Casey - Is the author of START SPINNING—EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW TO MAKE GREAT YARN. A spinner since 1973 she holds the Handweavers Guild of America Certificate of Excellence in Handspinning. Look for her workshops at Estes Park, Maryland Sheep and Wool and SOAR. Don’t miss her DVDs - START SPINNING, BIG AND LOFTY YARNS and GETTING STARTED ON A DROP SPINDLE Heide Murray - Has been needlefelting for eight years, teaching for three, and finds wool endlessly fascinating. Making whimsical characters has been a wonderful experience, leading to pieces in galleries in New York and Tokyo, even being a finalist in the Softie Awards in two categories in 2007. After years of sculpting dolls in clay and taking courses all over the states, she found wool and will never go back. Suzanne Connolly-Howes - taught environmental science and nature crafts to children and families. Since retirement she has devoted time to art. She creates whimsical animals, birds and insects with felt, paints silk scarves and creates garden sculptures with clay and mosaics. Judy Steinkoenig - Has been teaching weaving classes since 1983 including Beginning Weaving at Convergence 2004. You can see her weavings in Handwoven magazine. This, plus being a knowledgeable and lively speaker, keeps her in much demand up and down the Front Range. Debi Dodge - Was the Superintendent of the Handspun Yarn Show at the Boulder County Fair for 10 years. She has been the judge at the Estes Park Wool Festival and is a 3 time Medallion winner for her designer yarns at the Taos Wool Festival. Chris Switzer - Is the author and publisher of SPINNING LLAMA AND ALPACA and editor of PROJECTS FOR LLAMA AND ALPACA. She began weaving and spinning in 1971 and has been a member of the Handweavers Guild of Boulder and the Northern Colorado Weavers Guild ever since. She received a BFA in Weaving from CSU in 1984. She raises alpacas and paco-vicunas in Estes Park. Lily Huff - Is an expert of hand knitted super fine Russian lace, continuing a centuries old family fiber art tradition. She learned to knit lace at an extremely young age from her family in Russia. Lily is a lace designer, avid fine lace spinner and knitter. Margaret Tullis - learned to tat and crochet as a child from a sitter who found she could keep her quiet with a shuttle or hook and a ball of string. Later, by then a weaver and spinner, she couldn’t resist basketry when the material fell from her Florida trees. She has produced baskets and craft for mail-order as well as installations and galleries. She loves to learn and she loves to share. Sara Goldenberg-White - Earned her MFA in Fibers from Colorado State University. During her time at CSU she created her own art as well as taught multiple classes in the Fibers department. Sara assisted Jane Patrick with her rigid heddle weaving book THE WEAVERS IDEA BOOK. Sara has shown her artwork throughout the U. S. and beyond. She is an avid weaver, knitter and seamstress and enjoys working with non traditional fiber materials. Sharon Vair - spends her days in Northern Colorado breeding sheep that produce some of the best fleece in the area, if not the entire country. Look for her prize winning fleece at the Estes Park Wool Market and Taos. David Johnson - Holds degrees in weaving from Colorado State University and the Cranbrook Academy of Art. His teaching experience includes positions at the Oregon College of Arts and Crafts, the Appalachian Center for Craft and Front Range Community College. In addition, David has taught workshops at Penland and Arrowmont.
