Anthropologie Inspired Pom-Pom Hat
Anthropologie Inspired Pom-Pom Hat Materials: - 1-2 balls Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick, or any other super bulky yarn (about 90-120 yards)* US Size 11 (8mm) needles Pom-Pom maker, or cardboard to make your own. Here’s a good video tutorial: http://bit.ly/SMxFN1 Tapestry needle Gauge: 5 stitches = 2 inches in Garter stitch, on US size 11 needles. Finished dimensions: Laid flat, hat measures about 10 ¼ inches wide at lower edge, and is 8 ½ inches tall, from lower edge to crown (not including pom-pom). *Note on Yardage: You can just barely squeeze this hat and pom-pom out of one 90 yard ball of super-bulky, if you’re very judicious with your yarn usage. If you want to make your pom-pom as large as mine (about 5 inches in diameter), you’ll have to make it slightly less full than the white one shown here (you’ll only have 15-20 yards left over for your pom-pom, rather than the 27 yards I used for that one). The pom-pom on the gray hat is an example of what the slightly less full version will look like. If you want to have more yarn to play with, and more room for error, buy two balls. Note on sizing: You can easily adjust this hat to be slouchier (longer) or more fitted (shorter) by adjusting the number of rows you knit before the decreases. If your head is bigger, or you want a slouchier fit, just knit further before beginning your decrease rows. I opted to do this on the white hat shown here, but ultimately decided I liked the more snug fit shown in the gray hat. The size given in this pattern works well for most adult, female heads. Cast on 48 stitches in the long-tail method. Knit every row until hat measures 4 inches. I like to slip the first stitch of every row for a nice, neat edge when I’m seaming. End with a right side row (there is one side of your cast-on edge that is a better visual match for garter stitch- I call this the right side). Decrease Rows Row 1: *Knit 11, K2tog, repeat from * until 9 stitches remain. Knit to end. Rows 2-4: Knit Row 5: *Knit 10, K2tog, repeat from * until 9 stitches remain. Knit to end. Row 6: Knit Row 7: *Knit 4, K2tog, repeat from * until 6 stitches remain. Knit to end. Rows 8-9: Knit Rows 10-12: Repeat rows 7-9. Row 13: *Knit 6, K2tog, repeat from * until 7 stitches remain. Knit to end. Row 14: Knit Row 15: *Knit 4, K2tog, repeat from * until 4 stitches remain. Knit to end. Rows 16-18: Knit Row 19: *Knit 4, K2tog, repeat from * until 6 stitches remain. Knit to end. Row 20: Knit Row 21: *Knit 1, K2tog, repeat from * to end of row. 14 stitches remain. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail for seaming (about 24 inches). Using your tapestry needle, thread yarn through remaining stitches and pull tight. Seam back of hat and weave in loose ends. Make a large pom-pom using whatever method you prefer. The largest pom-pom you can make with most commercial pom-pom makers is 3 inches, and I wanted a larger one, so I made my own template out of cardboard. This video (http://bit.ly/SMxFN1) gives good instructions on how to make your own cardboard template (it’s very simple, I promise!). In order to achieve a 5-inch pom-pom, I made my cardboard doughnut 6 inches in diameter, with a 2 ¼ inch hole in the center. When you tie up your pom-pom, don’t forget to leave a long tail for attaching it to your hat. Sew pom-pom to hat using your tapestry needle. Enjoy being the cutest girl in the snow!
