This is my favorite time of year in Michiana. No, not because it’s football season (although a big factor), but because we have some of our best weather, fall colors and great new programs from PBS and WNIT. WNIT’s regional talent competition, “Michiana’s Rising Star,” was fantastic. I hope you watched! I can’t say enough to thank our staff members and dedicated Board of Directors for their hard work. While we are extremely happy with this first year’s effort, we are already making adjustments and plans for next year. For those of you who missed the program, please sample the talent of our finalists. Go to our website: www.wnit.org/risingstar. In your last Planner, I asked for input to a potential program schedule change. After reviewing your comments, it appears the change will work. Starting in September, look for the PBS NewsHour to move to 6pm, followed by “Experience Michiana” with Gordy Young at 7pm. But, for those who still prefer the 7-8pm time period for NewsHour, you may watch it at that time on the WNIT INFocus channel, 34.2. Thanks to all of you who provided your comments and suggestions. What other station would ask you for your input? You will also be pleased to know that both the PBS NewsHour and Charlie Rose will be expanding to weekend editions on WNIT. Another recent local hit for WNIT is “Our Town: Elkhart.” I love this series of “Our Town” programs because WNIT recruits community videographers to show viewers their town through their eyes, not ours. It’s a unique and valuable perspective. We premiered the program at a reception in Elkhart’s Lerner Theater Crystal Ballroom and on air during our August membership drive. Now, looking forward to October, WNIT takes great pleasure to honor one of the founders of Michiana Public Broadcasting with a special program, “Legends of our Time: Ernestine Raclin.” Mrs. Raclin has done so much for our own organization, and her philanthropy has made such an impactful difference with many of our community non-profit and educational organizations. Please watch the story of this classy, caring, remarkable woman. As usual, I have too much to share and not enough space. Perhaps the editor of the Planner will give me two pages next issue? Happy viewing, everyone! Sincerely, Greg Giczi President & General Manager What’s Inside? On The Cover Peg + Cat On Monday, October 7, PBS KIDS will premiere Peg + Cat, a new animated preschool series that follows the adorable, spirited Peg and her sidekick Cat as they embark on adventures and learn foundational math concepts and skills. Co-creators Billy Aronson and Jennifer Oxley have teamed with The Fred Rogers Company to bring young viewers a new way to experience math through Peg and Cat’s relatable, and often hilarious, adventures. Peg + Cat premieres on PBS KIDS with a special one-hour broadcast of two back-to-back episodes, along with integrated online and mobile content. Each episode features fascinating stories in which Peg and Cat encounter a problem that requires them to use math and problem solving skills in order to move forward. The series will air daily at 9am on WNIT 34.1. Because of this addition to our schedule, the daily Kids lineup has been somewhat re-adjusted. Please check this issue of the Planner on page 14, “Weekdays— September/October” to see the entire daily Kids lineup. Peg + Cat Premieres Monday, October 7 at 9am on 34.1 3 Worth Watching September The National Parks: America's Best Idea All programs are on both 34.1 and 34.2 unless noted. THE NATIONAL PARKS: AMERICA’S BEST IDEA Monday-Saturday, September 2-7, 9pm “The Scripture of Nature” (1851-1890) In 1864, Scottish-born wanderer John Muir persuades Congress to pass an act that protects Yosemite from commercial development for “public use, resort and recreation” — the first time in world history that any government has put forth this idea. In 1872, Congress passes an act to protect a “wonderland” in the northwest corner of the Wyoming territory and it becomes America’s first national park: Yellowstone. “The Empire of Grandeur” (1915-1919) In the early 20th century, America has a dozen national parks, but they are a haphazard patchwork of special places under the supervision of different federal agencies. The conservation movement pushes the government to establish one unified agency to oversee all the parks, leading to the establishment of the National Park Service in 1916 under its first director, Stephen Mather. = InFocus only 4 = WNIT only Last Tango in Halifax EARTHFLIGHT, A NATURE SPECIAL PRESENTATION Wednesdays, September 4-October 9, 8pm “North America” Snow geese, pelicans and bald eagles fly over the Great Plains, the Grand Canyon, Alaska and the Golden Gate Bridge as they encounter and engage with bears, dolphins, bison and spawning fish. “Africa” Fly and arrow-dive with cape gannets among sharks, dolphins, whales and the great sardine run. Soar with fish eagles, flamingos, kelp gulls and vultures to see the most animal-packed continent with fresh eyes. LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX Sundays, September 8October 13, 8pm Episode 1 Celia and Alan, childhood sweethearts reunited after 60 years, are stranded when Alan’s car is stolen. They phone their respective daughters, arrogant Caroline and happy-golucky Gillian, to pick them up. Celia and Alan introduce them to one another and make a surprising announcement. AMERICAN MASTERS: BILLIE JEAN KING Tuesday, September 10, 8pm The series’ first profile of a sports figure commemorates the 40th anniversaries of the famous Billie Jean King/Bobby Riggs battle of the sexes tennis match and the launch of the Women’s Tennis Association. King presents her own story, with perspective from Rosie Casals, Chris Evert, Venus Williams, Gloria Steinem, Riggs’ son Larry and others. NOVA Wednesdays, 9pm “Ground Zero Supertower” – September 11 NOVA returns to Ground Zero to witness the final chapter in an epic story of engineering, innovation and the perseverance of the human spirit: the completion of One World Trade Center, the skyscraper rising 104 stories and 1,776 feet from the site where the Twin Towers once stood. But 1 WTC isn’t the only engineering marvel taking shape here: NOVA goes underground to see the construction of a multi-billion-dollar museum that will house artifacts from 9/11. Foyle's War, Series VII BRAINS ON TRIAL WITH ALAN ALDA Wednesdays, September 11-18, 10pm “Determining Guilt” MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! FOYLE’S WAR, SERIES VII Sundays, 9pm “The Eternity Ring” – September 15 On trial is Jimmy Moran, who at 18 took part in a store robbery during which the storeowner’s wife was shot and grievously injured. Presiding is distinguished U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff, who has a longstanding interest in neuroscience and its effect on criminal law. Alan Alda explores how brain-scanning technology is providing insights into these questions and discusses the implications of neuroscience entering the courtroom. With one war ended, a new one is looming as the iron curtain falls across Europe. Suspecting that British atomic research has been infiltrated, MI5 asks Foyle to investigate the possibility of a Russian spy network in the heart of London. During his inquiry, Foyle learns that his former driver, Sam, has been working for one of the possible suspects. “Deciding Punishment” Jimmy Moran is found guilty of badly injuring a woman during a robbery. In the sentencing phase of the trial, Judge Rakoff hears arguments from the court-appointed psychiatrist, the attorneys, the victim’s husband and Jimmy himself. Meanwhile, Alan Alda discovers how neuroscience is already influencing the sentencing of defendants and meets a judge who has volunteered to have his own brain probed as he makes sentencing decisions. “Sunflower” – September 29 Foyle is tasked with protecting Karl Strasser, a Nazi officer turned MI5 informant who believes he’s in danger. America wants Strasser extradited for his involvement in a wartime event, but British Intelligence is determined to protect him. As Foyle nears a solution to the case, the unfathomable truth of “Operation Sunflower” is revealed. Underwritten by Holy Cross Village at Notre Dame and South Bend Symphony “The Cage” – September 22 A severely injured man drags himself to a hospital, only to die shortly after being found by a nurse and doctor. As Foyle makes inquiries, he discovers a mysterious military facility full of secrets that could threaten British Intelligence. Meanwhile, Sam’s jumbled efforts to help her husband, Adam, campaign for Parliament draw surprising results. NEW LINE-UP CHANGES IN SEPTEMBER PBS NewsHour will be moving to 6pm followed by Experience Michiana with Gordy Young at 7pm on 34.1. The new PBS NewsHour Weekend will air at 5pm Saturday and Sunday. The new Charlie Rose The Weekend will air at 5:30pm on Sunday. 5 Worth Watching September Great Performances: The Hollow Crown LATINO AMERICANS Tuesdays, September 17October 1, 8pm “Strangers in Their Own Land/Empire of Dreams” GREAT PERFORMANCES: THE HOLLOW CROWN Fridays, September 20October 11, 9pm “Richard II” From 1565 to 1880, the first Spanish explorers enter North America, the U.S. expands into territories in the Southwest that had been home to Native Americans and English and Spanish colonies, and the Mexican-American War strips Mexico of half its territories by 1848. The American population is reshaped by Latino immigration starting in 1880 and continuing into the 1940s: Cubans, Mexicans and Puerto Ricans start to build communities in South Florida, Los Angeles and New York. King Richard (Ben Whishaw) is called upon to settle a dispute between his cousin Henry Bolingbroke (Rory Kinnear) and Thomas Mowbray (James Purefoy). Both men are banished from the realm. After seizing Bolingbroke’s money and lands, Richard leaves for wars against the rebels in Ireland. Bolingbroke returns to claim his inheritance and then takes Richard prisoner and lays claim to the throne. “War and Peace/ The New Latinos” During the World War II years and those that follow, Latino Americans serve their new country by the hundreds of thousands — yet still face discrimination and a fight for civil rights in the United States. In the decades after World War II through the early 1960s, swelling numbers of immigrants from Puerto Rico, Cuba and the Dominican Republic seek economic opportunities. = InFocus only 6 Skeletons of the Sahara = WNIT only “ Henry IV, Part I” The heir to the throne, Prince Hal (Tom Hiddleston), defies his father, King Henry (Jeremy Irons), by spending his time at Mistress Quickly’s (Julie Walters) tavern in the company of the dissolute Falstaff (Simon Russell Beale) and his companions. The king is threatened by a rebellion led by Hal’s rival, Hotspur (Joe Armstrong). Prince Hal joins his father to defeat the rebels at the Battle of Shrewsbury and kill Hotspur in hand-to-hand combat. GENEALOGY ROADSHOW Mondays, September 23October 14, 9pm Follow a diverse cast of participants on an emotional journey that uses history and science to verify family lore. The programs feature individuals from Nashville, Austin, Detroit and San Francisco. SKELETONS OF THE SAHARA Wednesday, September 25, 10pm Explorer and scientist Paul Sereno made an extraordinary discovery in the middle of the Sahara desert: While prospecting for dinosaur bones, he stumbled across an ancient human cemetery more than 5,000 years older than the Egyptian pyramids. Who were these people and what were they doing in the middle of the desert? Go back into the desert with Sereno and his team, who are excavating new burials and making new finds. Worth Watching October Latino Americans All programs are on both 34.1 and 34.2 unless noted. LATINO AMERICANS Tuesday, October 1, 8pm “Prejudice and Pride/ Peril and Promise” Labor leaders organize farm workers in California as activists push for better education opportunities for Latinos. In the past 30 years a second wave of Cubans and hundreds of thousands Salvadorans, Nicaraguans and Guatemalans flee to the U.S., creating a debate over undocumented immigrants that leads to calls for tightened borders, English-only laws and efforts to brand the undocumented as a drain on public resources. Simultaneously, the Latino influence is booming in business, sports, media, politics and entertainment. Latino Americans become the largest and youngest growing sector of the American population. GREAT PERFORMANCES “Henry IV, Part 2” – October 4, 9pm In the aftermath of the Battle of Shrewsbury, the rebels continue to plot insurrection. Falstaff is sent to recruit soldiers and takes leave of his mistress, Doll Tearsheet. The rebel forces are overcome, bringing comfort to the dying king, who is finally reconciled with his son. Falstaff Visit wnit.org/programs for more! Genealogy Roadshow rushes to Hal’s coronation with expectations of high office, only to be rebuffed by the former prince who has now become King Henry V. “Henry V” – October 11, 9pm The French ambassador brings a challenge from the French dauphin to Henry V. The French challenge the English army to battle at Agincourt. Henry and his meager forces prove victorious against all odds. LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX Sundays, October 6-13, 8pm Episode 5 – October 6 Caroline throws herself whole-heartedly into her new relationship, upsetting her mother and her estranged husband, who looks to Gillian for sympathy. The film follows the challenges these kids face in their personal lives and on the chessboard. 7 Worth Watching October Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle SUPERHEROES: A NEVER-ENDING BATTLE Tuesdays, October 8-22, 9pm “Truth, Justice, and the American Way” (1938-1958) FRONTLINE Tuesdays, 10pm “League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis” – October 8 and 15 During the Depression, the popularity of dozens of superhero characters opens the door for a new generation of artists and writers. World War II creates a patriotic fervor, but in the 1950s, superheroes are caught in the fire of government scrutiny and regulation. When the thrilling “Adventures of Superman” is broadcast on the new medium of television, America’s first and greatest superhero leads the entire comic book industry to renewed strength. The National Football League is the richest and most powerful sports league in the world, generating more than $10 billion in revenues last year. Yet the sport is destroying the health of, and even killing, many of its players. And what’s more, for years the NFL denied scientific evidence that violence on the field causes catastrophic brain damage, injuries that caused the maiming and killing of players, including some of the all-time greats. “Great Power, Great Responsibility” (1959-1977) IN PERFORMANCE AT THE WHITE HOUSE Tuesday, October 8, 8pm “Fiesta Latina” In the 1960s, a new breed of superhero emerges in pages of Marvel Comics. Spider-Man, the Hulk and others are the first to have “problems” with which an adult audience can identify, and contemporary social issues make their way into comic books. Black powerhouses such as the Black Panther and Luke Cage appear on the scene, and the pages of “Green Lantern/Green Arrow” confront the reality of an increasingly complex world. = InFocus only 8 Frontline: League of Denial: The NFL's Concussion Crisis = WNIT only “Fiesta Latina” presents the White House celebration of Latino music and its influences on American music and culture. The President and Mrs. Obama welcome a star-studded evening of performance from the South Lawn of the White House, hosted by Eva Longoria Parker, George Lopez and Jimmy Smits. Performers include Marc Anthony, Aventura, Pete Escovedo, Gloria Estefan, Jose Feliciano, Los Lobos and many others. EARTHFLIGHT, A NATURE SPECIAL PRESENTATION Wednesdays, October 9, 8pm “Flying High” Get a behind-the-scenes look at how EARTHFLIGHT was made, including the extraordinary relationships between people and birds. Microlights, paragliders, drones and camera-carrying birds and much more helped along the way. NOVA Wednesdays, 9pm “Megastorm Aftermath” – October 9 In October 2012, superstorm Sandy cut a path of devastation across the Caribbean and the East Coast, killing hundreds and doing tens of billions of dollars in damage. Now, a year after Sandy’s deadly strike, NOVA asks: Was Hurricane Sandy a freak combination of weather systems? Or are hurricanes increasing in intensity due to a changing climate? What can we do to prepare ourselves for the next Sandy, and what progress has been made toward making our urban infrastructure more resilient? Antiques Roadshow MASTERPIECE CLASSIC: DOWNTON ABBEY, SERIES II Sunday, 10pm Episode One – October 13 Two years into World War I, Downton Abbey is in turmoil, as Matthew and other young men go to war — or avoid it. Appearances by Julie Andrews, Audra McDonald, Don Henley, Josh Groban, Itzhak Perlman, Peter Martins, Patti Austin & Take 6, Elina Garanca and Michael Buble. THE AFRICAN AMERICANS: MANY RIVERS TO CROSS Tuesdays, October 22November 26, 8pm This six-hour series chronicles the full sweep of African-American history, from the origins of slavery on the African continent through more than four centuries of remarkable historic events up to the present. NATURE Wednesdays, 8pm “Animal Odd Couples” – October 23 Despite the odds, there are countless stories of the most unlikely cross-species relationships imaginable: a goat guiding a blind horse; a doe who regularly visits her Great Dane surrogate mother; a juvenile gibbon choosing to live with a family of capuchins, and so on. Now, NATURE investigates why animals form these special bonds. Underwritten by Martin’s Super Markets SECRETS OF THE TOWER OF LONDON Sunday, October 27, 8pm Standing guard over the city of London for nearly 1,000 years, the formidable Tower of London has been a royal castle, a prison, a place of execution and torture, an armory and the Royal Mint. Production News Ernestine Raclin: Leading the Way In this brand-new documentary, WNIT’s cameras focus on her story of resourcefulness, courage, undaunted optimism and belief in herself and her community as only Ernie could deliver. Her abilities as a business savvy executive helped 1st Source Bank become one of the most successful, privately-owned financial institutions in the country. She paved the way for women in business, just as her volunteer activities led the way in economic development, arts, education and human services. Composed in collaboration with Third Coast Percussion, “Resounding Earth” gave Thomas the opportunity to work with the four young musicians whom she met while they were studying at Northwestern University – Owen Clayton Condon, Robert Dillon, Peter Martin and David Skidmore. “Resounding Earth” will be broadcast on WNIT 34.1 on Sunday, October 13 at 3pm and Saturday, October 26 at 4pm. Also, on 34.2 on Thursday, September 19 at 10pm. The half-hour program airs on Thursday, September 26 at 9pm and Sunday, September 29 at 4:30pm and Monday, September 30 at 7:30pm on 34.1. Resounding Earth The University of Notre Dame’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center and WNIT will present the world premiere of “Resounding Earth” by renowned composer Augusta Read Thomas this fall on WNIT. “Resounding Earth” is a 28-minute work for a percussion quartet featuring more than 125 bells from a wide variety of cultures and historical periods. Thomas composed the piece and the Chicago based Third Coast Percussion ensemble performed it live on September 30, 2012, at DeBartolo’s Leighton Hall. For the one-hour documentary, WNIT interviewed Augusta Reed Thomas along with the Third Coast Percussion ensemble to explore the musicality and insight into the making of each movement. In addition, WNIT interviewed Dr. Douglas Hall, Notre Dame associate professor in the college of engineering, to discuss the science of metallurgy that constitutes the various sounds made by bells. Anna Thompson, executive director of the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, provided the University’s perspectives on the importance of encouraging and celebrating the human spirit through the performing and cinematic arts. South Bend Medical Foundation: 100 Years of Excellence For over 100 years, the South Bend Medical Foundation has been providing laboratory services to the South Bend medical community and beyond. SOUTH BEND MEDICAL FOUNDATION: 100 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE premieres on Wednesday, September 18 at 9pm and repeats on Sunday, September 22 at 2pm on 34.1. Supporter Spotlight Mike Wargo This month WNIT shines the supporter spotlight on WNIT Board member Mike Wargo. Mike is serving his second term on the WNIT Board and has been a member of the Governance Committee and the Talent Show Task Force where he suggested the idea for “Michiana’s Rising Star,” the exciting and ground-breaking area talent show which took place in the WNIT Ganey Studio at the end of July and early August. “Michiana’s Rising Star” was two years in the making, and Mike says he personally enjoys events which make a mark. He also served on the Budget, Audit and Finance Committee. In addition to his Board of Directors service, Mike is a member of the WNIT Directors’ Circle and serves as the COO of Hospice Foundation. WNIT salutes his service, creativity and great support. Mike Wargo Directors’ Circle The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys. Diamond Level ($10,000 +) Ed and Sue Hiler Craig D. Sullivan and Cynthia L. Harris Marjorie H.
