Happy New Year… We are excited about the new year, lots of new ideas, yarns, patterns and projects. Our new patchwork fabric shelves are in place and we are very pleased with them. The fabrics look terrific, colourful and bright, and very easy to find exactly what you are looking for. Our central table is now free and it is calling out for people to sit around it and work on their projects, we have lots of activities planned for the new year to do it justice. We have a great program of classes and workshops. There are three Block of the Month groups, one in each of patchwork, embroidery and knitting. Groups for crafty kids have been popular and we are continuing them with workshops after school and in the school holidays. We are also very pleased to welcome Marg Low, a well known pattern designer from Albury who will be running regular workshops with us. Marg has a great following and many will be pleased to hear that she is back running workshops in Wangaratta. She will be introducing some punch needle work to us, so if you are interested in trying it, get in touch. We now have Marg’s patterns with lots of samples in the store. Summer Autumn 2009 rugs and are gathering a Catalogue of Hand Made Rugs, an opportunity to share pictures and stories of your family rugs. We have some great plans for the StitchedUp Textile Festival in Wangaratta in the middle of the year. We will holding our first Celebration of the Nanna Arts” and the topic is…..Coathangers. Dig out your hand covered old coathangers and use them for inspiration to make or cover a coathanger in the true spirit of the gentle arts: good workmanship, great design and practical usefulness. During the Festival we are indulging our enthusiasm for hand knitted and crocheted New Fabrics Cool baby wrap in soft printed muslin backed with fine cotton, very sweet bunnies and bambis. Crafty Kids in the Holidays Crafty Kids holiday workshops, morning and afternoon projects that link together, attend one or stay on for both. In the morning learn different stitches making a lined felt bag. In the afternoon, a small felt doll to slip in a pocket of the bag and a felt flower decoration to add to the bag or wear as a hair tie or brooch. Kids bring along their Nanna (or Pop, or mother or friend) and learn to knit in a friendly, supportive group. Jenny will give advice and tips for good techniques, and the easiest way to do things. Sit and stitch with others, share ideas, techniques and inspiration. Develop your skills and enthusiasm for embroidery and stitching. This seasons dress-making classes focus on the wardrobe basics, classic, perfectly fitting shirts and pants that can be made in different fabrics for different looks and seasons. We recommend Linda pure linens for pants, and Riviera handkerchief linen or light cottons for the shirt. Dressmakingg & General Sewing Classes for Kids Crafty Kids Workshops Crafty Kids will continue to meet on the last Friday of the month in term time, each session will be a complete project and provide opportunities to learn skills and experiment with colour and materials. Knitting & Crochet Block of the Month Here is your opportunity to master knitting cables, while creating a classic traditional hand knitted rug. You will knit one 30cm square of an Aran pattern each month; a total of 9 altogether, which are joined together to make a beautiful blanket. We will be choosing our squares from The Great American Aran Afghan booklet. The designs feature a wide variety of techniques from basic cables to more innovative stitch configurations, some more challenging than others. We will use a traditional Aran cream colour in an 8 ply yarn. Learn through three sessions: getting started, turning the heel, and grafting the toe. Use self–patterning or fair-isle effect yarns or design your own stripes and patterns. Socks are great portable knitting projects and are so easy once you know how. If you can knit and purl you can knit socks!
