Committed to Classicism
by Cinzia Maria Sicca
The author graduated from the University of Pisa in 1977 and was a
Research Fellow of the College from 1981 to 1985. She found Downing
had one of the richest but least known collections of architectural
drawings documenting the various phases of its building history.
This beautifully illustrated and produced book setting out the
architectural history of the College has a foreword by HRH The
Duchess of Kent, a kinswoman of Thomas Worsley the College’s third
master, and the mother of a Downing man (226 pages).
Copy of a print published by Ackermann in 1814
The artist was William Westall (1781-1850) who travelled
extensively as a young man eventually becoming largely
employed in the illustration of topographical works for
Ackermann and other publishers (approx. 409 x 312 mm).
