The Opportunity
This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned, mission-oriented physician who has a passion
and deep commitment to helping people who suffer from alcoholism and drug addiction. The
Betty Ford Center is seeking a new Medical Director for its organization who is steeped in the
12-step recovery process with a strong background in addiction medicine; an individual who will
respect the unique culture while guiding the Center to embrace emerging changes in this field.
The Betty Ford Center, a part of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, is a non-profit
organization that provides treatment for the disease of alcoholism and other drug dependencies
for the entire family, including patients, their families and their children. Co-Founded by the
late U.S. First Lady Betty Ford in 1982, the Center’s approach to recovery has been firmly
rooted in the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. More than 60,000 have attended
programs which are gender specific; 50 percent of space is reserved for women and 50 percent
for men. The Center’s 20-acre campus is located in Rancho Mirage, California.
Licensed for 190 patient beds, the Betty Ford Center comprises the Center, the Betty Ford
Foundation, and the Betty Ford Institute. The organization currently has an operating budget
of $36 million, a full-time equivalent staff of 225, and an endowment of $10 million.
In February 2014, Hazelden and Betty Ford Center announced their merger had been approved
by government regulators, making the new “Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation” the nation’s
largest nonprofit treatment organization with 14 sites nationwide and an annual $180 million
operating budget.
Dually reporting to the Vice President/Administrator of the Betty Ford Center and the Chief
Medical Officer of Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, Marvin Seppala, M.D., the Medical Director
is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of medical affairs in a manner that allows
the organization to excel and succeed into the future. The Medical Director ensures on a dayto-day basis that the medical team carries out Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation’s promise to its
patient: that patients, families and customers will have the best opportunity for lifelong
recovery.
The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable track record as a clinical leader in the addiction
field. Experience as a CMO, Medical Director or equivalent is preferred. The candidate should
have been successful on the administrative side in a complex healthcare environment.
Management experience, particularly with a matrix structure would enhance candidacy.
Candidates must have a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy degree; board certification in
psychiatry and licensed or eligible to be licensed in California required. Certification by the
American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) is required. We seek individuals with strong
emotional and social intelligence that have a demonstrated ability to connect with individuals in
a meaningful way at all levels of an organization. Candidates must have empathy for those
who are in recovery and a deep commitment to the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.

The Betty Ford Center became a world-class treatment
facility for individuals with the disease of addiction. Twentyfive years after opening the doors, Mrs. Ford decided to
extend the reach of the Center’s message by establishing an
Institute devoted to raising awareness about the suffering and social damage caused by
addiction on individuals, families, the community, and the nation. The Mission of the Betty Ford
Institute is to conduct and support collaborative programs of prevention, education, and
research that will lead to a reduction in the devastating effects of addictive disease.
Betty Ford Center’s business model is based on philanthropy. The Betty Ford Foundation serves
as the funding entity for the Betty Ford Center and the Betty Ford Institute. The Institute
conducts and supports collaborative programs of prevention,
education, and research. The Foundation is the bridge between
committed benefactors and those served by programs and
projects of the Betty Ford Center and the Betty Ford Institute.
What makes the Betty Ford Center different and special is their
focus on all who are impacted by the disease of addiction. Other
facilities offer some help to family members, and even fewer
offer to help children. No other facility is as intensely focused on a holistic family approach to
the disease than the Betty Ford Center. It is critically important that loved ones and children
learn about the disease, how it has affected the alcoholic/ addict, how to begin their own
healing process, and develop their own resiliency. Both the Children’s Program and the Family
Program are open to the public.

Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation
Over 60 years ago Hazelden Foundation opened its doors and began treating suffering
alcoholics. At the time, no one could have imagined that what began as a modest undertaking
by a handful of dedicated and committed people in Minnesota would eventually become a
world-class organization touching millions of lives around the globe.
In February 2014, Hazelden and Betty Ford Center announced their merger had been approved
by government regulators, making the new “Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation” the nation’s
largest nonprofit treatment organization.
Hazelden Foundation is led by its President and Chief Executive Officer, Mark G. Mishek who
joined the organization in November 2008. Known for its groundbreaking work in addiction
treatment and recovery, Hazelden serves over 12,000 patients annually through treatment
centers in Minnesota, Illinois, Oregon, New York, and Florida. It is the largest specialty
publisher of addiction and recovery materials in the world. Its accredited Graduate School of
Addiction Studies is educating more than 180 students from around the world. Research
initiatives continue to expand the body of knowledge in addiction and recovery, and its public
advocacy efforts support measures that make treatment and recovery more affordable and
accessible for those in need.
Mishek, President and CEO of the merged organization, says, “We are now well-positioned to

The Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation now has 14 sites across the U.S., offering both residential
and outpatient services based on the Twelve Step, abstinence-based treatment model. Services
are available to individuals and their families and other loved ones. The new foundation also
includes the nation’s largest addiction and recovery publishing house, a fully-accredited
graduate school of addiction studies, an addiction research center, a prevention training
program, an education arm for medical professionals and a unique children's program.
The Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., will retain its name, with the added tagline “a
part of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation.” Most other location names also will remain
unchanged and will assume the same tagline. One exception: on Hazelden’s campus in Center
City, Minn., the Women's Recovery Center will be renamed to honor former First Lady Betty
Ford’s commitment to promote treatment and recovery for women.
“The Betty Ford Center and Hazelden are iconic names in our industry, and both hold important
places in the history of addiction treatment and recovery,” Mishek said. “We intend to honor
both legacies and capitalize on our shared strengths to assume the responsibility of being the
world leader dedicated to helping people reclaim their lives from addiction.”

Mishek is excited about the timing of the merger. He said, “It’s a new year, and we have a new
organization. With that come high hopes and a certain thrill in the infinite possibilities. Our
merger is also taking place at a time, historically, when recovery communities are beginning to
coalesce around the idea of taking action to reduce the stigma that prevents so many people
from seeking help. More people in recovery are sharing their stories so that the general public
can see the other side of addiction. I credit Mrs. Ford, more than anyone in history, with
beginning the effort to chip away at stigma by publicly sharing her own recovery experience,
and now is a great time to be carrying her legacy forward.”
Hazelden was founded in 1949 in Minnesota and is credited with spreading the abstinence- and
Twelve Step-based, multidisciplinary care model that permeates the treatment industry. Betty
Ford Center was founded in 1982 based on Mrs. Ford’s mission to “help others live their best
possible life” and is recognized around the globe for its commitment to patient care.
In a joint statement, the Hon. Susan Fox Gillis and Dr. Mary Turner Pattiz, the chair and vice
chair respectively of the new Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation Board of Trustees, said, “We are

The Position
Position Summary
The Medical Director of the Betty Ford Center ensures on a day-to-day basis that the medical
team carries out Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation’s promise to its patients: that patients,
families, and customers will have the best opportunity for lifelong recovery.
The Medical Director does this by providing medical oversight for the designated program(s);
providing supervision of any physicians connected with the program, and developing and
supporting productivity and patient clinical-scheduling benchmarks. He/she acts as a liaison to
the local medical community, participating in the establishment and implementation of health
care policies, examining and treating patients, and performing related duties as required. This
position dually reports to the Vice President/Administrator of the Betty Ford Center and the
Chief Medical Officer of Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, Marvin D. Seppala, M.D.
Key Roles and Responsibilities of the Position

Drive employee engagement of medical and clinical staff.

In addition to the leadership and administrative duties, provide direct clinical services as
described in the job description of your MD specialty (50% clinical services, 50%
administrative).

Assume physician oversight of the myriad of medical education opportunities at the Betty
Ford Center and develop a coordinated approach to medical student, resident, and fellow
education (see attached graphic in the Appendix). The medical director will be the primary
supervisor, mentor, teacher of the BFC addiction fellows.

Assist the Executive Director of Quality, Research & Measurement with patient complaints
and grievances, adherence of medical staff with clinical protocols, etc.

Provide clinical oversight to the Executive Director, Quality, Research & Measurement and
the Medical Executive Committee on credentialing for all clinical providers.

Be an active participant and leader in the medical leadership committees of the Betty Ford
Center such as the Medical Executive Committee, etc.

In conjunction with the Director of Training, help as a content expert to provide training to
staff and to identify areas where training and education would be beneficial.

Drive recruitment of physicians and help in the recruitment of other clinical providers to the
Betty Ford Center.

Key Results Areas


Physician Leadership – Supervise all physicians, psychiatrists and nurse practitioners, as well
as physician assistants (either employees or contractors) at the Betty Ford Center.
o
Ensure the patients have appropriate physician coverage, and ensure the provision
of physician and healthcare practitioner services.
o
Assist the facility in executing the process for annually reviewing physician and
health care practitioner credentials.
o
Provide specific guidance for physician performance expectations. Conduct one-onone performance communication sessions with direct reports to measure progress
on goals and development plans; provide feedback on progress on a regular basis.
o
Facilitate feedback to physicians and other healthcare practitioners on performance
and practices ongoing.
o
Proactively communicate with and engage site colleagues, assigned medical
colleagues, and key stakeholders (e.g., Clinical Teams, Privacy, Compliance, Mental
Health, etc.) to support business objectives and to discuss and resolve safety issues.
o
Develop and implement timely communication plans in conjunction with the site
specific and regional strategic initiatives, ensuring team has an understanding of
strategic goals and objectives.
o
Facilitate the selection, placement and development of new and existing medical
staff contractors.
o
Maintain current job descriptions for all supervised positions.
o
Assist the Betty Ford Center Vice President/Administrator in the development and
execution of an annual budget that is appropriately comprehensive, realistic, and
effective in meeting the goals of the medical team and the organizational strategic
plan.
o
Participate as requested in the development and implementation of the annual
strategic plan for the Betty Ford Center.
o
Participate in Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation leadership activities at the discretion
of the Betty Ford Center Vice President/Administrator, including national teams.
o
Help to establish a culture of performance excellence at the Betty Ford Center.
o
Participate in National Clinical Teams of the HBFF (Clinical Performance Excellence
Team & National Health and Medicine Team) as assigned.
Patient Care – Clinical Leadership – Provide guidance and decision support concerning the
provision of medical services for all phases of the care continuum.

Participate in administrative decision-making and the development of policies and
procedures related to patient care.

Develop and implement specific clinical practices and protocols for the facility to
incorporate into its care-related policies and procedures, including areas required by
laws and regulations.

Establish procedures and guidance for facility staff regarding contacting
practitioners, including information gathering and presentation, change in condition
assessment, and when to contact the Chief Medical Officer for Hazelden Betty Ford
Foundation.
o
Review, consider and/or act upon consultant recommendations, as appropriate, that
affect the facility's care policies and procedures or the care of an individual patient.
o
Review, respond to and participate in federal, state, local, and other external surveys
and inspections.
o
Review policies and procedures regarding the adequate protection of patients' rights,
advance care planning, and other ethical issues.
o
Work with the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation Chief Medical Officer and other
internal teams to establish, develop, and execute medical processes and procedures
consistent with quality medical care.

Ensure medical policies and procedures are adhered to by physicians, psychologists
and nurse practitioners.

Seek and utilize disparate information and opinions both inside and outside of the
Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation to independently solve medical issues and make
final medical decisions for the Betty Ford Center (in consultation with Chief Medical
Officer, as needed).

management of medical conditions in order to promote and ensure safe quality treatment of
physical health complications.

Consult with on-site professional nursing staff regarding procedure and practice

The following describes the ideal candidate for the Medical Director of Betty Ford Center. (Not

Education

Eligible for medical licensure and credentialing in the State of California required.

Board certification in psychiatry required.

Certification by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) is required.

DEA certificate required.

Buprenorphine certification required.
Experience/Background
The successful leader will have:

At least five years of experience in addiction related medical practice.

At least five years of physician experience in a healthcare facility.

Previous medical leadership experience.

If recovering, a minimum two years freedom from chemical use problems.

Excellent interpersonal skills required to interact with all levels of associates and customers.

A consensus builder-mentality and the ability to create a vision for the various treatment
modalities based on mutual respect and attention to outstanding treatment outcomes.

Strong financial acumen and understanding of the business of the Betty Ford Center.

Prior experience in a system and understand how to work effectively in teams and in a
highly matrixed environment.

Knowledge of healthcare economics and payment reform, especially with the Accountable
Care Act and its impact on addiction treatment centers.


Opportunities and Expectations for Leadership
The new Medical Director for Hazelden Betty Ford Center must demonstrate meaningful
progress within the first 18 to 24 months of his/her tenure in a number of key areas. He/she
will be expected to:

Provide medical leadership and expert knowledge to the Vice President/Administrator to
help in the creation of a physician foundation for the Betty Ford Center. As part of this
process, standardize all physician contracts.

Help the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation CMO to determine the best electronic health
record for the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and play a key role in the roll out of the
chosen electronic health record at Betty Ford Center in 2015.

Develop an understanding of the current medical and psychiatric processes utilized at the
Betty Ford Center. With this understanding, expand current services to provide cognitive
behavioral training, motivational enhancement therapy, etc., to provide a more effective
treatment process for co-occurring psychiatric disorders.

Assess the skills of existing medical and psychiatric personnel and use this assessment to
develop a cohesive, well-functioning team of providers who provide consistent and
outstanding care to patients. As part of this process, develop complete job descriptions
with accountabilities for the medical staff.

In conjunction with the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation CMO, develop a physician- and
nurse-led quality improvement program unique to the issues of Betty Ford Center while
simultaneously participating in the System projects.

Become the Program Director of the American Board of Addiction Medicine Fellowship
scheduled to admit its first fellow in July 2014.

Develop an understanding of the acute detoxification program and how to more effectively
provide physician coverage and improve patient care.

Establish physician relationships at Eisenhower Medical Center for transfer of medically
compromised patients.

Develop knowledge of the greater Rancho Mirage, Palm Springs desert communities and
become a voice of the Center in the community.

Increase the participation of grateful alumnae in the philanthropy of the Betty Ford Center
and help to develop programs that will appeal to alumnae.

Provide medical leadership for the TJC survey scheduled to occur in the fall of 2014 and
help where appropriate (such as with infection control with the DON to guarantee a good
TJC result).

Understand the business of addiction treatment centers and play an integral role with the
Vice President/Administrator in developing a realistic budget, developing new clinical
programs and contributing to a healthy bottom line from operations.

In conjunction with all providers, develop standard clinical protocols and assure adherence.

In conjunction with the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation CMO, participate in research
projects by the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation and develop independent projects at the
Betty Ford Center.

Develop an atmosphere of cooperation and integration between the clinical teams
(psychologists and therapists) and the medical teams (physicians and nurses).

Review the medical care model with special attention to hand offs and develop new
processes to insure the appropriate passage of clinical information to the appropriate clinical
care providers and families.

Mountains to the south and the snow-capped San Jacinto range on the west; the land area
encompasses 25 square miles. The City’s year-round population is 17,000, but the seasonal
