Pain, stiffness, swelling and weakness are frequent symptoms experienced after a fracture. Pain can be eased by simple analgesics prescribed by your GP or Consultant. The pain that you experience after a fracture may last for at least 6 weeks. Ice or heat may also help reduce your pain. Heat can be applied simply in a sink/bath of hot water or by a hot water bottle/wheat pack wrapped in a towel. Ice may be applied by placing a bag of frozen peas in a damp towel. Either can be applied for 15-20 minutes up to 4 times a day. You may notice that your elbow and hand are swollen. Elevating the arm can help reduce swelling and applying ice as previously mentioned. It is normal for you to experience stiffness, again this can persist for several weeks/months. Following the appropriate exercise programme can ease this. A Physiotherapist may also try gentle mobilisations to ease the stiffness You may notice that you feel weak after your collar & cuff/plaster is removed. Again with appropriate exercises and general use of your hand this will improve with time. You may notice a lump or bump at your elbow. This is part of the healing process as extra bone is laid down to heal the fracture. With time this is often re-absorbed although it may always be evident. You may also feel vulnerable without your collar and cuff / sling. This will improve with time as your confidence increases. It is important to remember that all these things are normal after a fracture. It is also important to remember that you have had a fracture and that your arm will not return to normal immediately. Provided that you exercise and use the arm as much as possible it will improve with time and patience. Page 2 of 4 The following exercises should be repeated 10 times 3-4 times daily. Grasp the wrist of the arm you want to exercise. Bend your elbow and assist the movement with your other hand. Hold for approx 30 seconds Sit on a chair with your palms on the seat and fingers facing backwards. Slowly try and straighten your elbows, pushing your hand into the seat. Hold for approx 30 seconds Lean against a wall with your fingers turned upwards. Slowly try to straighten your elbow, pushing your hand into the wall.
