exciting time in breast cancer history. Techniques
in surgery and radiation are evolving, and
major advances are being made in personalized
cancer therapy. We have assembled a stimulating
program that covers many of those recent
advances, as well as the controversies in breast
disease management.
This year we are offering 6 pre-meeting courses
that have been designed to help fill practical
and professional gaps in your practice—
Advanced Breast Imaging and Technology in
Breast Care Management, Basic Stereotactic
Breast Biopsy, Basic Breast Ultrasound, Prep
Course for Breast Ultrasound and Stereotactic
Certification and Accreditation, Oncoplastic
Surgery: Breast Conservation and Mastectomy,
and the return of Practice Management.
The general session has been comprehensively
planned with 22.5 CME hours of talks from
experts from around the world. It kicks off on
Thursday afternoon with the ever-popular
Coding and Reimbursement symposium followed by Research To Practice’s satellite symposium, Rounds with Investigators—Clinical
Research Leaders Consult on Challenging
Cases of Early Breast Cancer. Other presentation highlights include Dr. Zannis’ Presidential
Address; the Keynote Address by Thomas R.
Russell, MD, FACS, former Executive Director of
the American College of Surgeons; and sessions
on Regional Management of Breast Cancer,
Optimizing Breast Cancer Care in the Changing, Economic Climate, Life After Breast Cancer, Update on Adjuvant Therapy, Update on
Benign Breast Disease, Clinical Trial Update,
and Breast-Conserving Surgery. Also, be sure
to attend the scientific session on Friday and
Saturday afternoon, as well as the poster
presentations on Friday evening, to learn about
the latest research.

by Helen Pass, MD; Updates from ASCO, 2009
Breast Cancer Symposium, and SABCS; the
session on controversies in breast surgery,
featuring debates on the role of lymphoscintography and internal mammary node biopsy,
contralateral prophylactic mastectomy, partial
breast radiation, and axillary lymph node
dissection for positive sentinel nodes; and the
community tumor board. Also be sure to attend

For the fourth consecutive year, the
Society has elected to partner with Dr.
Neil Love and his education group,
Research To Practice (RTP), to host the
Thursday evening industry-supported
satellite symposium at the 11th Annual
Meeting. Once again Dr. Love and his
group have proposed an innovative and
exciting concept that we believe will
help create a truly beneficial and
worthwhile event. After several years of
focusing on the presentation of clinical
data, Dr. Love and his team will take a
different approach and concentrate on
the practical application of research
findings in breast cancer management
and patient care.
To that end, the meeting will not
include didactic presentations, but
instead will rely on the expert perspectives of clinical investigators commenting on actual patient cases presented
live by Society members. To obtain the
cases that will be included in the event,
RTP recently enlisted the assistance of
Society members to provide real, challenging cases from their own practices
for presentation. At the meeting, select
Society members, either in person or
via Skype™ video broadcast feed, will
formally present their cases to the faculty for treatment consultation and recommendations. We believe the end
result will be an interesting, practical,
and relevant educational opportunity
focused on the management of early
breast cancer.
