Everything you need to
a beautiful lawn
Creating a new lawn is easy with Westland’s range of products.
Here are a few hints and tips to help you create that lush green lawn you’ve always wanted.
Prepare the ground
Dry the whole area, removing stones, roots
and other debris. Improve poor soil with
Westland Soil Enhancer or Top Soil.
Rake the area to break up clumps
and level the site to create a fine, level
seed bed. Surestart Lawn Seeding Soil
will help create the ideal foundation for
creating a lawn.
Choosing the right seed
Choose the right lawn seed variety for your garden
to ensure it performs and stays looking lush.
• If there will be a lot of traffic across
the lawn, perhaps with children playing
on it, choose a hard-wearing variety
such as Surestart Tough Lawn Seed.
• To create that perfect
show-lawn that everyone will
admire, Surestart Finest Grade with its
special blend of fine-leaved grasses,
will be the best choice.
• If you’re in a rush, Surestart

The best times to sow lawn seed are
March to April and September to
October avoiding hot dry periods.

To sow a new lawn mark out the area
into square metres using garden canes
before sowing.
For best results, keep off the area
until the grass has grown 4-5cm tall
and protect seed from birds. Keep
the soil moist to aid germination. If there is no rain
within a few days of sowing then water gently but
thoroughly. Continue watering in dry spells.
For best coverage scatter half the lawn
seed over the area, then distribute the
rest at a different angle. For easy sowing
Allow the grass to grow 4 or 5cm tall before the first
cut. Start off with the mower on a high setting and
never remove more than a third of the grass height
in one cut.
The best time to over-seed your lawn is
March to May or September to October,
applying a rate of 25g/sq.m. This will
help to not only thicken your lawn but
also keep it healthy.

For control of weeds and moss apply
Lawn Feed, Weed & Moss Killer in Spring,
April is ideal.
APRIL
For smaller lawns the easiest way
to apply is using the handheld spreader
pack, which covers an area up to 100sq.m
For larger lawns use the Westland
Wheeled Lawn Spreader for fast and
accurate application.
Moss will blacken and die within days. Weeds will
be controlled in 2-3 weeks. Rake out dead weeds
and moss then re-seed any patches.
Just a few weeds?
If you have a small weed problem use a selective
weedkiller like Resolva Lawn Weedkiller or
hand weed. Remember to remove the entire
root, as many weeds can quickly re-grow
from the smallest piece left in the ground.
Did you know that about 25%of the grass in
your lawn dies each year? It’s not surprising
that from time to time the lawn may start to
look a little bit thin and worn in places.
The easiest way to improve thinning

Lawn Feeding and
Conditioning

the garden, and your lawn is no exception.
To apply simply loosen the soil surface, removing
any weeds, moss or debris. Level the ground and

the seed, water gently to activate and then keep
moist until the seeds have germinated and are
growing strongly. Spring and Autumn are the
best times to apply.
