We’ve had cycling being viewed in the
millions on TV this summer. Team GB
has done a massive marketing job for
the industry, for free.
Even if they didn’t switch off their remotes and Google
where their nearest bike shop is straight away, there’s a slow
burn factor at play, sowing the seeds of cycling, if you like.
How many saw cycle events and were excited by them and
might be that bit more likely to cycle at some point in
future, maybe with a little push?
That may well be impossible to quantify but if you have
cycling in front of the masses more often then that’s when
participation numbers really have the potential to increase.
Those who wouldn’t dream of visiting a velodrome or riding
in a road race had chance to watch and demystify the
hidden and perhaps hitherto never visited realms of cycling.
Four whole different forms of cycling – road, track, MTB
and BMX – were given a national platform. Bringing these to
the masses (by the millions) is helping normalising cycling –
moving bikes from a marginal pastime and making them
ever-more accessible to everyone.
The only downside is that by September 9th both the
Paralympics and Olympics will be over and done with and
cycling will be back off the TV for much of the mass viewing
public. Maybe it’s the industry’s job to treat this spectacular
summer of cycling as a sales lead and capitalise on the huge
marketing job that Team GB has done for us. With the
support of TV broadcasting houses keeping cycling in the
eye of the public, the battle for hearts and minds might just
be swinging in cycling’s favour.

TELEVISION IS brilliant. Despite being
scoffed at by snobs and derided by just
about everyone else at one time or
another, TV can – at its best – connect
and inspire the different corners of our
nation, millions at a time.
Undoubtedly there is plenty of
rubbish on telly, that goes without
saying, but this summer the land of
television broadcasting transported around three million
Brits to France to watch Wiggins become the first of us to
win Le Tour. It also took over 51million of us to East London
to watch the Olympics – handy if you couldn’t get tickets.
TV ratings for some of the cycling races hit in the region
of eight million, which is just under one in eight of us in the
UK, or thereabouts.
That’s an awful lot of eyeballs pointing our way. I don’t
have any formulas to work out how many of those viewers
will then be tempted to get on their bike, but if just a
fraction are – say a tenth of that figure, or a twentieth
even – then that’s a lot of potential customers.

UK bike industry to finally
get regular sales data
Research giant GfK calls for stores to join its retail panel Reports will track bicycle
sales only – initially GfK already provides regular research for Dutch cycle market
By Lisa Foster
THE UK cycle industry is finally set to get
regular, much-needed sales data – and
BikeBiz will have access to the information.
But we need your help.
Research giant GfK is to launch retail
research reports on the UK cycling industry
in early 2013, providing regular statistics on
sales of bikes across specialist bike retailers
and non-specialists, including both bricks and
mortar and online.
The research will track sales each month,
highlighting features such as bicycle type,
brand, wheel size, gear system and more. It
will provide retailers, distributors and
suppliers with an accurate view of bicycle
sales in the country for the first time.
Going forward, GfK will also look to
publish reports covering parts and

and by supplying your
data you’ll receive

accessories, including helmets, lights,
components, clothing and tyres.
GfK’s extensive work across multiple retail
sectors means that major High Street
retailers are already geared up to provide
sales data.
Head of Insight at Halfords, Debbie
Preston explained: “The UK bicycle industry is
in need of broader total market and sales
analysis and at Halfords we are delighted to
support GfK with their initiative.”
But of course specialist chains and IBDs
will be included on the panel – and GfK is
calling for retailers to get involved in this
important project.
As well as doing their bit to ensure that
the research accurately reflects the market,
any retailer signing up to the panel will be
Moore Large gets Social with dealers
THE FIRST of Moore Large’s series of dealer
shows has taken place at the distributor’s
headquarters, with further dates set
throughout September and October, as well
as an appearance at both Eurobike and The
Cycle Show.
The Derby show held last month saw the
debut of a new house brand, Social Bike Co, a
premium-end BMX label, which Adam Garner
and new recruit Rob Andrews
have been ushering to market
since November last year.
With seven models shown
to dealers, the line offers
complete bikes ranging £319
through £619, including a
model dubbed the Storm – a
homage to Derby’s now
demolished indoor skatepark
that bred talents such as Niki
Croft and Matt Roe.
Aftermarket parts and a
frame in three colours, dubbed
the Disorder, feature. Stock will
be arriving as soon as
September.
The line begins with an 18-inch model
dubbed the Scout and according to Adam
Garner who oversees Moore Large’s BMX
business “This isn’t a scaled down 20-inch,
the components are properly considered,
with shortened cranks and appropriate sized
bars to fit with the current trends.”
Although 20-inch bikes largely dominated
the show, BikeBiz did spot a few other key
products. House components and accessories
label One23 has a new 1,800 lumen light,
retailing for a reasonable £129.99. The three
Cree LED light comes supplied with charger
and a quick release bracket. Run time varies
from 1.5 hours on maximum output to six
hours on low beam.
Bowling ball proof protection label G-form
now offers black and yellow
iPhone cases for the 4 and 4S
models.
Meanwhile, Lauren Smith,
brand manager for Cuda, told
BikeBiz that she feels this
year’s line, though largely
unchanged in terms of build,
will tempt kids to the label
before all others on the shop
floor thanks largely to a
hugely revamped and much
brighter colour palate.
Further Moore Large events
are to be held at:
Perth Racecourse on
Tuesday September 4th and Wednesday
September 5th.
Moore Large HQ between Tuesday
September 11th and Friday September 14th.
Ireland’s City North Hotel on Tuesday
October 2nd and Wednesday October 3rd.

the GfK reports.
“This is an incredibly exciting initiative
for the UK cycling industry,” said BikeBiz
managing editor Lisa Foster. “The market
has long suffered from a lack of real
stats, so I’m sure the whole industry will
welcome the arrival of GfK in the sector.
“We’re delighted to be working with
GfK to give a snapshot of the market via
its reports, and we urge as many retailers
as possible to get involved with the

Wisper signs up amazing Grace
Firm to bring German brand to market And Wisper moves production of three bicycles to Germany
By Jonathon Harker
ELECTRIC BIKE specialist Wisper has
signed a distribution deal to bring
Germany’s Grace to UK cycle retailers.
Grace company founder Michael
Hecken designed the first e-motorbike
authorised for street use in Europe and he
has worked with Nicolai of Germany to
produce the Grace Easy and Grace MX
pedelecs. Nicolai specialises in lightweight
MTB frames and components.
More than forty custom-built items and
proprietary developments for the Grace
range are manufactured by Nicolai. In
2011, Grace began serial production in
cooperation with a large German bicycle
factory and has completed the
development of the Smart e-bike
launched this year.
Wisper will offer the three-bike Grace
range, but will specialise in the pedelec
versions of the lightweight Grace Easy and
the Grace MX mountain bike. Both will
appear at the NEC Cycle Show, where they
will be available to test ride.
GERMAN PRODUCTION
From late 2012, three Wisper bikes will be
produced in e-bike hotbed Germany.
A combination of factors, including
wage increases in China and the weakness
of the Euro against the Yuan, have made
European production more affordable.
Most importantly, Wisper added, the
switch means delivery times will be cut,
quality will improve and will facilitate
Wisper’s sales drive into continental
Europe. With that in mind, Wisper has
brought a new director on board in the
shape of Dieter Scholz, formerly an MD of
a leading scooter and e-bike distributor.
Wisper’s David Miall said: “Although our
relationship with our Chinese OEM
manufacturers has helped Wisper gain a
strong position in the pedelec market in
the UK and overseas, the directors believe
that as the business grows, a more stable
manufacturing platform was needed.”
The new German OEM partner is an
established player that recently secured

Miall added: “We are delighted to be
working with one of the largest and most

quality bikes and ‘on time’ deliveries.”

Charge is now ‘printing titanium’
Popular bike label links with European Aeronautic Defence and Space Centre in industry first Larsen
predicts cost to come down in future and may open up potential for super detailed manufacturing
The brand has charged
ahead of the industry with
its unique ‘printed
titanium dropouts’
6 BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER
By Mark Sutton
CHARGE BIKES has revealed a
collaboration with the European
Aeronautic Defence and Space centre,
which will now see the production of 50
Freezer complete bikes with some very
unique ‘printed titanum dropouts’.
Fans of Charge Bikes and followers of
head honcho Nick Larsen may have
spotted tweets referring to titanium
printing over the past few months and the
firm has today told BikeBiz: “I think
we are, for once, ahead of
everyone else in tech.”
The process, dictated
by a three dimensional
CAD model, ‘slices’ the
design into a series of
very fine layers, which
are then selectively
melted in a bed of
powder to create a solid
form. So, what does it all mean? At present
Charge have created some complex
dropouts with their logo protruding,
(which some may have spotted at the
recent CSG shows at both Manchester
Velodrome and Mercedes Benz World in
Surrey – summarised on page 13) but in
the long term, Larsen said: “It opens up so
much potential. We’re going to start
working on some other bits.”
The process is new, however, which
does mean that at present it’s on the cost
-prohibitive side, with the 50 limited
edition Freezer models costing £400 more
than the conventional design.
“It will become affordable,” says Larsen.
“The cost has come down in the last year
alone. Much like rapid prototyping was
ridiculously expensive only a matter of
years ago, now you can by a machine for
under £1,000...”

CHAIN REACTION
Electric Bicycles – put
aside your concerns
and join the revolution…
Electric bicycles is a term which may fill you with dread and make you think
of unsightly, large, complicated, expensive, heavy machines. This may have
been true when they first came onto the market, however electric bicycles
have come on leaps and bounds, particularly in the last seven years, argues
Powacycle’s Wazz Mughal.
“The modern electric
bicycle functions
largely as a normal
pedal cycle. The
components are
mostly the same.
Electrical parts aren’t
designed to be
maintained, rather
easily replaced when
the time comes...”
Wazz Mughal, Powacycle
8 BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER
MODERN ELECTRIC bicycles look very similar to
traditional bicycles, and do not weigh much
more either. Many consumers felt riding an odd
machine would incur strange looks and they
would feel very self-conscious. But recently,
novel ways of integrated batteries, such as
disguising them as water bottles, or hiding them
within the frame, have been tried and such
machines are available, although the most
popular bikes have the batteries either built into
the rear rack, or behind the seat post. All this
allows the bikes to look ‘normal’. As battery
technology has improved the batteries have
become smaller and lighter, which again helps
with the normal feel.
As a result of the dramatic improvement in
electric bicycles, the number of units sold is still
growing year-on-year. This said, the UK is a long
way behind other European countries where
electric bicycles sell in much larger quantities.
There is still a need to educate consumers
further as to the enjoyment they can derive
Trade shows now
dedicate serious space
to this developing
market as more brands
test the water
from owning an electric bicycle. The
demographics that electric bicycles appeal to
most are the over 50’s and commuters. Electric
bicycles enable people who are not the cyclists
they once were to continue to enjoy cycling as
they once did, as well as providing an
economical transport alternative allowing you to
replace car journeys with cycle rides without
having to worry about needing to take a shower
when you arrive at your destination.
Many cycle dealers across the UK have
realised the potential business that selling
electric bicycles offers. When most people come
to buy an e-bicycle they have never owned one
before and they want to be able to try one
before they buy one. We are regularly taking
calls from consumers asking where their nearest
cycle shop is that stocks electric bicycles. There
are still some cycle shops, however, that almost
fear that although they are experts in bicycles,
they know nothing about electrics.
The modern electric bicycle functions mostly
as a normal bicycle. The components are mostly
the same with the addition of some extra
electrical parts. Nowadays most electric bicycles
are moving to having a wiring loom with all the
electrical components connected to it. Because
these components are not designed to be
maintained, rather if they happen to fail they are
expected to be replaced, servicing and fault
fixing on electric bicycles is actually very easy.
For example, one of the biggest fears that
consumers and non-electric bicycle dealers have
is how to change the rear wheel when the
motor is in the rear wheel. In most cases, this is
done in exactly the same way as a traditional
bicycle, the only extra thing to do would be to
unplug the push together connectors that attach
to the motor.
With petrol prices continuing to remain high,
more and more people are looking to replace
their second car with an electric bike.
Running an electric bike costs a fraction of a
percent of what it takes to run a car, with no
VED tax, insurance or large fuel bills to consider.
Add to this that it is now hard to visually notice
the difference between an electric bike and a
conventional bicycle which removes the selfconscious factor that consumers may have had
in the past.
Now is the time to add electric bicycles to
your range if you haven’t already and capitalise
on this growing market.

roadshow. Manchester Velodrome was
obviously always going to go down well with
the cycle trade, but if you tallied up the
Instagram and Twitter posts from either show,
I’d not be surprised if there were more shots of
Mercedes’ 1886 first production car. I say car, it
sort of looks like a fancy e-trike. It’s safe to say,
whether or not we’re ‘supposed’ to be
enthusiasts of the motor car, Mercedes Benz
World in Surrey proved a real hit as a
showroom and, as distributor’s trade shows go,
certainly drew a crowd.
Russell Merry, MD of Cycling Sports Group,
told BikeBiz that despite a water-damaged start
to the year, there was some optimism among
dealers: “I’m confident we’ll see some
bounceback in sales through late summer. It’s
fantastic to see that post-Olympics we’re going
to have some positive role models on the
scene. Hopefully that’ll translate into a good
number of new and inspired cyclists.”
With that in mind, let’s round up what’s on
offer from CSG to dealers in case you missed
out first-hand.

SCHWINN (1, 6, 7)
Flown in from the USA to answer visitor’s
questions was Sam Greenman, an expert on
Schwinn’s current catalogue.
“Schwinn is all about style and utility,” said
Greenman. And he wasn’t joking. To emphasise
the strength and appeal of certain models, I
haven’t been able to type this article without
interruptions, much thanks to having the image
of the new £499 ‘Rendevous’ on my monitor.
Ladies at BikeBiz HQ have been particularly
taken by the array of practical racks fitted as
standard to this model. There are coffee cup
holders, a rack designed to hold a six pack of
beers (411 men’s model at £599) and a wine
rack on offer in Schwinn’s catalogue. Dealers
obviously understand the appeal of such
attractive extras too, with many at the show
asking if the racks would come as an
aftermarket product. Greenman told them that
based on feedback, that although the answer is
presently no, “we’re going to have to look at
availability, in future, given the demand.”
It’s not just visions of sending customers off
happily on rides to the vinyard that enthused
dealers, however. Attention to detail is rife,
with the traditional and often ugly chainguards
replaced with a tailored sleek guard sprayed to
match the bike’s paintwork. An Altus sevenspeed build will retail at £499, while a £569
bike specced with a Sturmey five-speed
gearhub is also available.
SUGOI (3, 4, 10)
The super-exclusive Boa lacing club has a new
member thanks to Sugoi’s spring 2013 RSX
shorts. Designed for long cross-country jaunts,
the RSX has a detachable Formula FX liner and
a lightweight stretch woven, water resistant
outer shell.
A Boa dial provides easy twist adjustment
and before you jump to the conclusion that a
wire belt would be uncomfortable, Sugoi says it
has designed the garment in such a way that
you’d not know had you not been told. An
Icefil liner features to keep your customer cool.
Perhaps we’re jumping the gun with spring
wear, there’s still plenty of winter training to
get through, so Sugoi has introduced the RS
Zero jacket – a high performance thermal that
regulates the wearer’s heat, is water resistant
and breathable. The garment is finished with

GT (2)
With a renewed focus on its race bikes, GT has
added the Power and Pro series for junior,
expert and pro-level riders.
A key addition to the race frames is the
‘front-entry’ dropout, which lives above the
axle line and is said, not only to make wheel
changes faster, but to remove torsional flex
and remove the risk of over torquing a chain.
The race line begins at £329 for the Power,
which is being touted as the entry model for
the aspiring racer, all the way through to the
£500 GT Pro, sporting race circuit favourite
products such as SDG’s i-beam seatpost and
saddle, a stiff two piece crank, Tioga
Powerblock tyres and much more.
WETHEPEOPLE AND ECLAT (5)
A few days prior to the show we’d spotted
some new Eclat hubs, seemingly finished with
some kind of multi-tone ‘oil spill’ effect on the
web, which turned out to be the new ‘Pulse’
hubs. If you were hoping to get a few
aftermarket pairs in it may be a while yet, as at
14 BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER
present they’ll feature on the £899
WeThePeople Envy only. There is, however,
some other significant aftermarket product
coming from the high-end label, including a
freecoaster and 120 gauge cassette hub due to
land with CSG shortly.
WeThePeople’s complete bike line begins at
£329 this year for the ‘Curse’ and throughout
the range dealers will note a more concise
colour palette, with no more than two designs
per bike. From the Crysis upwards it’s just the
one SKU.
Further to the bikes and hubs, CSG will
shortly take stock of a signature Maxime
Cheveron frame, as well as the new Scorpio
frame, complete with unique hydroformed
tubing. The latter lands in January.
CANNONDALE (9)
The big news from Cannondale’s point of view,
aside from the obvious top-end rigs, is the
brand’s own technology and top-end features
gradually becoming more accessible at lower
price points. This is most evident in the fact
that, for 2013, you can purchase a CAD8 build
from just £599.
“Dealers have told us they’d like to see
some trickledown of performance features on
slightly more wallet-friendly bikes,” said

Customers can also now take home a time trial
Slice for £1,799, specced with Shimano 105.
Bear in mind this bike is inspired by the £7,499
Slice RS – a Tour de France machine that’s been
years in the making and boasts being among
the most aerodynamic available.
The Super Six is also now available in a Tiagra
spec for £1,599 and the Synapse for £1,499.
MONGOOSE (8)
All of a sudden parents have plenty to choose
from when seeking a properly proportioned
BMX for their kids’ first bike.
Mongoose’s offering comes in the form of
downsized Program build that feature the
shortened cranks, smaller bars and, in the case
of the £229 16-inch wheeler, V-brakes and
smaller brake levers to allow for little hands to
work the brakes more efficiently.
Mongoose has made an effort to improve
the minor details of build quality on its lowerend bikes for 2013, with the £350 Chamber a
good example. Carrying front and rear sealed
hubs, a full chromoly frame, pivotal saddle and
Odyssey Chase Hawk grips the value for money
is excellent. CSG believes it could be one of the
best specced completes at this price point.

range and gradually progress to Forme – the
Foremula name was arrived at for its link to
Forme. “We didn’t want an intangible
connection, we wanted consistency.”
“We’re treating it as a separate brand to a
degree. And we want them to look cool and be
something to aspire to.”
A junior range, speccing with Campagnolo and 4ZA, and
going global. Jonathon Harker speaks with Adam Biggs
and Rebecca Moore to get the latest on Forme…
IT STARTED with four models and now, just two
years on, Moore Large’s in-house bike brand
Forme has 52 models in the new range. But
expansion of the line-up isn’t the only reason
it’s going to be a big year for Forme. Having
beefed up its infrastructure with a key
appointment or two, Forme is being taken to
the next level, not least with the launch of a
junior range called Formeula.
But let’s start with the range expansion.
Adam Biggs and new Forme recruit Rebecca
Moore tell BikeBiz that it’s all about measuring
up to the competition.
“2013 is a big expansion for us,” explains
Biggs. “It’s all about trying to compete with the
mainstream brands like Giant and the rest. They
all have in excess of 200 models.”
He says: “We’ve only ticked a few boxes in
each market sector, we’ve certainly not got a
model at every £50 juncture.”
Forme’s MTB series, for example, has targeted
the race enthusiast, featuring five 29ers and price
points from £500 all the way up to the
showpiece carbon 29er, retailing at £3,500.
“You need to have an expensive flagship bike
in the range to show off what the brand can do
and to give it credibility,” Biggs adds.
And just as important is the starting point of
the prices – the bikes have to be accessible to
Joe Public, Biggs says. “We want to see as many
people as possible on our bikes, so you need
accessible price points – there are levels we’ll
never go below, of course. Our goal is to bring
class and innovative design to the mainstream.”
4ZA FORME-ATION
Forme has struck up a working relationship with
4ZA for the forthcoming model year. Why? Well
it was not a decision that was based on the fact
that Moore Large distributes both brands, the
duo are keen to emphasise, other than in terms
of aftersales service. Biggs explains: “There’s a risk
BIKEBIZ.COM
to using a not so well known brand like 4ZA, but
there were so many reasons for us to use them.
Their support has been brilliant and they’ve
allowed us to customise every single part.”
“We’ve even been able to use our specific
pantone and design,” adds Moore.
Now every Forme bike has ‘British Design’
stamped on it and much of the range will
feature Campagnolo, although there are still
some Shimano options. The change is down to
a few factors, including good old-fashioned lust.
“We like the ergonomics, and everything
about Campag. The sex appeal of an Italian
brand is certainly a factor – the brand is
associated with the real high-end and that’s
valuable to us. The supply is reliable too and
another factor is that virtually every
mainstream brand uses Shimano. We wanted to
stand out and do something different.”
FORME-ULA FOR SUCCESS
So what about Forme’s expansion into the
junior market? What inspired the move? Biggs
takes up the story. “The market is absolutely
dominated by Isla Bikes. If you go to any race
event they almost seem to have a monopoly
and it’s because they do everything right, it’s a
great brand. But,” he adds: “they don’t offer
product to IBDs – they are direct.”
As you’d expect, the Forme team has not
just jumped into the market willy nilly, with
research going on months prior to the creation
of the Formeula range. Biggs attended GoRide
Coaching Sessions and as a youth rider himself
knows a thing or two about the market. It's all
about the fundamentals, the duo agrees, with
simple but sometimes overlooked points like
having the bike designed for the short reach of
a youth.
The Formeula line-up will start with a tight
collection of bikes and develop with the
market. The plan is for youths to enjoy the

MORE FORME
Biggs has praised the level of support offered by
the brand’s distributor. Biggs reveals that
whenever he’s come to the table with a request
– to expand the range by 15 models or invest in
staff – he’s been met with zero resistance.
“Now we have Beccs on board. She worked
previously at Moore Large for six years in
telesales, which is really useful for us as she got
to know the dealers in the role.”
Investment in the form of marketing will be
more extensive in cycling magazines, which
marks a slight a change for the brand which has
previously put much of its marketing cash into
shop POS. There are three levels of dealer
commitment – Pro shop, Platinum and Gold,
with the Pro (of which there are five at time of
press) almost like a brand or concept store.
What are the ambitions in terms of store
count? “We are looking to expand across the UK,
but not to go mad. The benefits are a huge
exclusive territory for the dealer – it makes them
a destination store. Margins are competitive – as
a new brand we’re competitive.”
When BikeBiz spoke to the duo, they’d spent
the previous day filming promo videos in the
Peaks – another first for the brand – starring
Alex Welburn who tweeted about the shoot and
soon had crowds watch him racing down hills.
Moore tells BikeBiz: “We’ve never done video
before and it’s just another thing where we’re
going to the next level. The videos will be for
dealers to use.”
Aside from growing its dealer base from the
current 160 to around 300, nationally, Forme is
plotting to eventually go global. “We want to
be breaking into the international markets and
be at Eurobike. We could have done that this
year to test the water, but we want to be
satisfied we’ve got the infrastructure and that
we can walk before we can run. We have to get
it right for the UK consumer first. But,”
concludes Biggs, “it’s a case of when, not if.”

Haben sie eine 29ers?
What can you expect to see at the 21st Eurobike show? Pretty much everything the cycle industry has
to offer? A bold claim, but it’s not far off. Jonathon Harker looks at a snippet of the offerings …
FOLDING BIKES, LED lights, zeppelins, publicity
stunts, 1,200 exhibitors and 40,000 trade
visitors – we hope you’ve remembered to pack
some comfy shoes. Now that Eurobike is
imminent, more bike and P&A brands have let
slip details of the new ranges they’ll be
showcasing in the halls of Messe
Friedrichshafen.
Tern is introducing its new Swoop series of
bikes with an uber low-step frame design. The
Swoop top tube is only 28cm, or 11-inches, off
the ground (more of a bottom tube, then?).
That makes it one of the lowest step bikes on
the market, according to Tern. Other key
features of the Swoop series are the low centre
of gravity to enhance stability, shorter cranks
(170mm) reducing the angle knees need to
bend at to rotate those pedals and an upright
riding geometry – the shorter reach and higher
bars bringing the rider close to a ‘sit up and
beg’ position, by the looks of it. There are also
integrated light and dynamo hub options, space
Dahon is celebrating its

than ten seconds.
Two versions of the Swoop will be available,
the Duo and the D7i. Tern will be in booth B4501 at the show and on the Demo Day at
booth #101.
As well as bringing its new kit to Eurobike,
Dahon will be celebrating its 30th anniversary
at the international show. There’ll be a fully
blown press conference on Thursday (11am –
noon) including details of a marketing
campaign that will include a ’30 Years of Me
and My Dahon’ photography and video
competition. For the anniversary, Dahon will
produce 30 Limited edition and 300 Replica
Bikes for promo purposes, with a special
anniversary film and plenty of other
celebratory shenanigans. Product-wise, the
brand has revealed a colourful line-up of bikes
for 2013. The two-toned Vic P18 is a new
performance bike from Dahon, featuring a
specially designed frame and a new Neos ninespeed rear derailleur with a front derailleur to
combine for 18 speeds of riding comfort.
There’s also be a completely new folding ebike, using TranzX technology (page 43 and 45).
The Ikon Electric will incorporate strong
halogen front and rear lighting, while the
brushless motor will be incorporated in the
front wheel (the battery is tucked away in the
rear carrier). Other highlights include the
Formula S20, another performance folding
model, this time using a Shimano Tiagra tenspeed drive train with a Vuelta Highku Alloy
53/39 tooth crankset.
Biologic’s new version of its seatpost-withan-integrated-pump PostPump will be on show.
There’s more on that in our New Products

system) and the RSX jersey. The cooling
collection is made from Icefill, a high
performance cooling material that
cools skin and protects from UV

too, featuring new fabrics and
designs and a new fit too. The
highlight of the collection is the
performance RS collection, strong on
technical details and sharp good
looks, the brand says. The RPM
collection will also be available to
examine close-up, featuring sleek
design, a performance aesthetic and
eye-catching colours. There’s more on the
brand in the CSG UK show round-up (pages 13

Lezyne will be showcasing its wares at
Eurobike (as well as Interbike and the UK’s NEC

been completely redesigned and expanded.
Four new models have been introduced to
suit a wider range of riding

Lezyne will be at B3-107.
Endura will present its spring/summer 2013

There’s a new Dawn for TSG. Available from
spring 2013, the Dawn pays tribute to the
“skate feel of the ‘70s”, back when full cut

probably have filled this feature just by listing

PRENDAS CICLISMO
The customer service offered by Prendas
Ciclismo has earned the company much praise,

quickly. They produce kits for local cycling teams
and support them by following/supporting the

have ‘set the company apart’ we are told.
SILVERFISH
Silverfish’s expanding portfolio led it to take a
bigger room at Core this year. It stocks Spain’s

spring), plus Turner.

CYCLE SHOW 2012 PREVIEW
Now in its second year at the
Birmingham’s NEC, The Cycle
Show is making waves this year,
with big name exhibitor sign ups,
record trade registration and test

“Our trade

BIKEBIZ.COM
IT’S JUST a matter of weeks now until The
Cycle Show opens its doors, once more to be
held in the Midland’s main exhibition centre.
Though largely a consumer-facing event, the
opening day remains exclusive to a trade
audience, and if early registration is anything to
go by, an enthused bunch they are.
Feedback from prior years has almost
unanimously centred around getting the ‘A
Team’ on board – the likes of Trek, Specialized
and other manufacturers large enough to
support interest in a show almost by
themselves. The aforementioned labels are part
of the mix this time around, with the latter of
the two exhibiting on behalf of the ever-growing
list of concept stores carrying the brand’s
moniker exclusively. There’s plenty more to
sustain both trade and consumer interest too,
however. Distribution powerhouse Madison
returns to the show, alongside the likes of
Chicken Cyclekit, Accell, Raleigh, Upgrade and
many more.
To engage the trade and make the journey
worthwhile, the team behind the show have
been hard at work to secure a timetable of
seminars in partnership with the Association of
Cycle Traders, Future Publishing and many more
detailed later in this show preview. Perhaps set
to get the biggest round of applause, this year’s
exhibition will be attended by a celebrated Scot
and Olympic champion fresh from pounding the
boards of London’s new velodrome, Sir Chris
Hoy. Make sure you’re on the doors as they
open at 9.30 to be sure of catching a glimpse of
Britain’s most decorated Olympic athlete.
The cycling celebrity hall of fame is set to be
further boosted over the duration of the

show with appearances from downhill
legend Steve Peat and also Ed Clancy who is due
to appear on Condor’s stand. On the Saturday
and Sunday, golden girl of the track Jo Rowsell
will be present and touring the show.
Having run for over ten years now under the
guidance of Upper Street Events, head of
marketing Lucinda Hyde McCready told
BikeBiz: “We’ve come a long way since our first
show at the Business Design Centre in 2001.
This year is particularly significant for us and
our trade registration at this point in the
timeline has never looked so strong. There
seems to be plenty of excitement about the
brands on board, the seminars and events –
such as the BMX shop battle on the trade day,
which has already got 24 retailers signed up to
compete. It’s well worth retailers taking time
out to come and see our biggest show to date.
Our target is to see 24,000 visitors this year.”
The retail area is
now open to

everything
aside from
complete bikes
“We’ve dedicated pit space
by the test tracks available for
brands featured on the show
floor. This means consumers
can follow up with the
brands whose bikes they
clicked with on test rides...”
On the BMX front, McCready talked of an
‘Interbike style’ BMX zone, which fills the entire
stretch by the ramp course. With a £5,000 prize
purse on offer to riders entertaining the crowds
on the consumer days, the 20-inch business
benefits from a much-expanded focus this year.
Bigger wheels will get plenty more dedicated
space this year too, with arenas set out for
testing the latest electric bikes, a space for
disability cycling, a DMR-sponsored wooden
pump track with master classes alongside
sponsored talent Olly Wilkins run daily, a kids
area, a road test track and the Dare 2b
sponsored mountain bike singletrack course
that proved so popular last year.
On the power assisted front, the test track
for electric bikes is significantly larger, with a
built-in incline to allow consumers and the
trade should they wish, to really give the bikes
a thorough thrashing. Riders will have to be
over 18 to test the estimated 40 bikes set to
feature on the track.
This time around there will be opportunities
for brands to have booths in the pits alongside
their test bikes, enabling consumers to follow
up with the labels they click with post-test ride.
McCready said of the pit area: “We can fit
plenty of brands into the pits and space here
comes free-of-charge to those with main arena
floor space booked.”
Specialist independent mobility label Quest
88 is on board as the main host to the
disability test track, where attendees can try
out specially modified bikes. Operating
throughout the UK and Ireland, Quest88
provides a full assessment and demonstration
service; to assist therapists in delivering the
most appropriate solution for the individual.
The cost to feature in the retail zone has
been reduced this year, prompting a variety of
firms to sign up to sell everything

aside from complete bikes. Exhibitors
are, of course, allowed to take orders
on their stands.
For the handmade bike aficionados among
us, Cycle Show is for the first time to feature a
block of stalls dedicated to the growing
custom-build market – there’s still space here
too, so if you’re a framebuilder Upper Street
would like to here from you.
Consumers with a desire to get some riding
in are in for a treat this year, with raceorganisers Sweetspot partnering with the show
to organise a criterium on the Saturday night.
Running post show alongside an exhibitor party
in the nearby Wetherspoons – the race will
start and finish at not too far from the pub. A
youth category for boys and girls sets off at
5.30 and runs until 8.45. Winners here will take
home prizes supplied by exhibitors. The men’s
and women’s evening races kick off
immediately afterwards and prize money is up
for grabs. The following morning a sportive sets
off from the show, led out by pro teams, such
as Team Raleigh and Rapha Condor Sharp.
Discussing the build up to the show just a
month before doors open, McCready adds:
“We’ve carefully listened to feedback from our
debut show at the NEC last year and
responded well to a number of suggestions. The
return of some big name brands being one
such request that we’ve ensured is pinned
down. Trade visitors should really take a look at
our seminar timetable in between visiting their
business partners.
“The seminar with Future Publishing will
provide great insight into how to boost your
firm’s Google rankings, while the ACT’s
seminars will give some great tips on how to
boost cycle sales with retail finance platforms.
They are exhibiting at the show too, so
members new and prospective can pop by at
their stand for a chat. We look forward to
welcoming audiences through our Raleigh
125th anniversary themed doors come late
September.”
For those looking to secure last minute
exhibition space at the show, there are still
booth slots available. Contact Cheryl at Upper
Street on 0207 288 6733 for more information.
Trade registration for an e-ticket to the show
is free of charge when done in advance, though
on the door tickets will cost £13.
Visit www.cycleshow.co.uk/bb in order to
register you and your colleagues (plus ones are
registered in one hit, so there’s no need to fill
out multiple forms). ID checks will be
performed on the door on the trade day to
ensure business authenticity.

IT TOOK some serious shop floor browsing and ticket
reading before being seen in this branch and that’s
despite four staff seemingly available.
The tickets attached to the bikes suggested an end of
model year sale and some displayed a promotional offer
where if a customer spends under 500 on a bike they
may obtain £50 of free accessories. Over £500 and that
figure rises to £100 worth of gifts. I wonder whether this
alone could sway a customer.
On the flipside, there’s little excuse for the flat
performance given when I approached the counter
seeking help. Throughout, the helper was stand-offish,
allowing me, clearly a newbie to women’s bikes, to steer
the conversation through silences.
The one redeeming feature was the assistant’s final
recommendation. Guessing that a beginner wouldn’t be
best suited to a racing bike, I was pointed to a more
upright build, on sale, though the reduced ticket price
wasn’t discussed.
I WASN’T sure what to expect from Luciano, having read
bad reviews on Google prior to my visit.
My visit did, thankfully, reflect the exact opposite of
what I’d read online. The assistant was, in fact, one of the
most polite I’ve come across and dealt with my query in a
wholly professional and attentive manner.
Spending a generous amount of time with me during an
otherwise quiet period, my early interest in the MyVelo
label, of which customers can customise the grips and
saddle to their taste, was steered toward the Dawes brand
as the helper revealed that he was to discontinue the label.
Considering my £400 budget generous for a hybrid, yet
the minimum spend for a road bike, the helper advised
that a beginner on the roads should always cycle in
comfort so as to enjoy the experience, but also develop a
taste for cycling before committing to a speedy bike.
The only downside I could pick, however helpful of the
store, was the note provided to me at the conclusion of
my visit with a bike’s details and frame size written down.
Nothing to stop me going on the internet now.

WITH AN encouraging greet not too far into the store,
first impressions were strong as an assistant came from
behind the counter to provide assistance. Recognising
early the delicacy of my ‘birthday surprise’ situation, the
helper advised that if the bike were not liked by the
recipient, I could return to exchange, though a refund
would not be available. A wise move to clarify that early,
I thought.
We exchanged a good chat on the pros and the cons
of a pure bred road bike over a more beginner-friendly
hybrid. Though specification wasn’t detailed perhaps as
meticulously as elsewhere, the assistant did give me a
good impression of what the shop could offer me in
terms of service.
Pre-warning of an imminent model year switch, the
helper suggested I move quickly to secure a bike, I
thought hinting at a deposit.
Throughout the assistant was friendly, knowledgeable
and gave serious thought to how to best serve perhaps
not the most straightforward of customers.
South Bank Cycles
Brixton Cycles
ANOTHER POLITE and strong meet-and-greet had at
South Bank Cycles. Though my price range was not asked
of me, the assistant drew some strong conclusions on my
behalf, contrasting and comparing a £350 Ridgeback over
a £450 Trek. Suggesting that build-wise there was little
noticeable difference to a beginner cyclist, it was
recommended I opt for the cheaper bike and use the
saved cash to adorn the bike with accessories and
perhaps buy the recipient of my gifted bike a helmet.
Mentioning the store’s three month service, quickly
followed by details on warranty on the frame and fork, I
felt the assistant had honed in on the Ridgeback and
was making a concerted effort to draw me to the bike.
The more we talked, the more it was working.
Emphasising the comfort brought about by carefully
thought out geometry, it was highly recommended for a
newbie cyclist. Though there was little to tie me to a
return to the store, for example the ask of a deposit, the
frame size needed wasn’t given away – a bugbear of
Mystery Shopper and one which can see custom go
online very quickly.
I WAS allowed to browse for two or three minutes
before being met at Brixton Cycles, which going by the
stock, has an extremely diverse customer base.
The assistant who met me led with the science behind
deflecting bumps in the road through a good fork. For the
second time, the Specialized Dolce was recommended as
the most ideal women’s road bike for London, with its
carbon fork and shock absorbing insert. Furthermore, the
longer back end was said to be particularly comfortable,
suggesting the assistant had ridden the label’s bikes before.
When asked briefly about a pink Brompton in the
window, I was informed, quite rightly, that they’re a lot
more nimble than they look and, should I be willing to
shell out the cash, the investment would be a strong one.
It was suggested I bring the partner into the shop for a
sizing up, as the store liked to ensure the right bike was
bought first go. This would, however, scupper my ‘surprise’.
You can’t help but smile at this shop and its
character. A sign on the door, aimed at customers
requesting the use of tools reads “no manners, no
spanners”.

Summary
MYSTERY SHOPPER’S had plenty of experience of
London’s retailers in the past and let me tell you,
they’re not all as polite a bunch as visited here. Evans
aside, we can’t fault any for attention to detail. I fear on
this occasion that the Evans branch just didn’t have
‘interested’ staff. It was a hot day and I got the
impression coming from behind the counter was a
chore. Apex Cycles scoops top marks, based largely on
the logical approach to dealing with a customer ‘gifting’
a bike. Having a concrete policy on sales, exchanges
and returns is always a good move as customers can be
a pain in the backside when purchases go wrong.

Eurobike 2012:
The atmosphere’s electric
Over the years electric bikes have had an increasingly large presence
at Eurobike, and this year will be no exception. Jonathon Harker
takes a look at some of the new tech arriving at Friedrichshafen…
By Jonathon Harker
ELECTRONICS BRAND AEG has
chosen Eurobike to makes its electric
bike market debut, where it will
exhibit two bikes.
The German company said its
technology will distinguish itself from
the competition by using individual
system components specifically set
up for the demands of the rider and
system integration on the bike.
The AEG offering is based around
two innovations; the central motor
and rear motor. The central motor
system is equipped with a silent and
maintenance-free disc motor which
doesn’t require its own interface on
the frame or an extended wheelbase.
It is possible to mount a rear wheel
hub with coaster brake without extra
technical know-how, AEG says.
The rear motor system uses new
tech that enables a significantly
smaller diameter compared to
existing rear motors – and improves
efficiency to boot. Both can be
operated with a carrer or downtube
battery, according to AEG.
The ‘smartphone look’ display is
controlled via remote and the first
bikes with the disc motor drive
system will appear in bike stores from
the middle of next year.
For more information head to
AEG’s stand at Eurobike at A6-105.
TranxZ scooped a
Eurobike Award for its
PST AGT last year and
will be showcasing an
updated version in
August.
The brand will be on a test track too
in the open air exhibition ground east
near 101.
TranzX won a Eurobike Gold Award
for its PST Automatic Gear
Transmission (AGT) last year, and the
new generation model will be
appearing at this year’s show, now
offering more features within a
central motor system, chiefly
increased compatibility. Previously
only available for bikes with front
motors, the technology has new
revised ‘software’ that is smaller and
easily mounted separately behind the
seat post. Compared to the last
version, the new iteration uses 40 per
cent less space and needs no special
setting into place.
The system analyses changing road
conditions and automatically shifts
into the best gear, providing ideal
cadence and a smooth riding
experience. It can be used with
regular city bikes that feature a
Nexus hub gear.
Also up from TranzX at Eurobike is
the MO7 range, offering two central
motor types mountable to the
bottom bracket for a low centre of
gravity – ideal for sporty e-bikes.
Located at the bike’s midpoint, both
wheels can be set up in a variety of
combinations – like hub gears with
hub dynamos and a coaster break.
The basic MO7 motor is

high performance and smooth shift,
says TranzX, plus low noise and
vibration level. The MO7HC is the
most powerful in the range so far,
available in white, black, silver and
metallic grey.
Germany-made Neodrives’ rear
motor system uses a high-precision
optical sensor coupled with
multipoint thermosensor tech for
maximum operational safety – and
optimal power deployment.
The 250W motor comes equipped
with a freewheel body and can be
integrated into all common wheel
sizes, says Neodrives. A longer range
is possible using the system, due to
that clever sensor tech.

Nuvinci’s N360

tested at length in
tough conditions over
a 16,000km trip
around Australia.
A TFT display features a clock,
eight-language menu navigation and
common cycle computer functions,
with a USB port for updates and
service checks. It comes in three
capacities (9Ah, 11,25Ah and 15,5Ah)
as a 36V downtube or carrier battery.
The first Neodrive equipped ebikes will hit the market in 2013 and
the booth – part of Benchmark
Drives – is in Hall A4-209 at
Eurobike.
Nuvinci’s N360 drivetrain has
recently had an extended outing in a
cycle trip around Australia.
Adventurer Maximilian Semsch took
the N360 on a 16,000km trip across
the country where, we’re told, there
were no problems during the trip.
Kitted out on a Hai e-bike, the
‘seamless shifting’ NuVinci hub
performed through tough conditions.
In fact 60 brands now offer
bicycles equipped with the N360 hub
and a growing number are using the
new NuVinci Harmony system – a
continuously variable shifting system
offering the option to seamlessly
shift automatically or manually.
They’re at hall A7-309 at the show.
There are plenty more e-bike

OPINION:
Electric Ambitions
Become Reality
The electric bicycle sector has
matured into a significant
sector and it’s time it was
taken seriously, argues Paul
Stanforth, managing director
of distributor EBC
Solex is one of
e-brands EBC
handles
I SHOULD declare my interests early.
As the managing director of one of
the major UK e-bike distributors I am
obviously going to talk the sector up.
That said, I have been in the bike
industry for well over a quarter of a
century and many in the trade who
know me will testify that I am not
one for hyperbole and I say what I
think. So here’s my state of the nation
address on e-bikes.
When Saracen was sold in 2008 we
already had our eye on the e-bike
market. The European figures have
been talked about again and again
(probably too much) but – even if we
don’t follow the same pattern as the
Germans, etc – it definitely shows ebikes have a strong position and there
is an entirely new customer group out
there who need an e-bike. This new
customer group could represent the
next leap forward for the cycle trade
as other sectors approach saturation
and begin to slow.
However, the sector is not growing
as fast as some people had hoped for,
myself included, and although strong
momentum is being gained there are
two barriers that as an industry we
need to bring down. Cycle-specialist
retailers need to capitalise on this
market soon or be in danger of losing
out to other sectors and be left
wondering why they didn’t act sooner.
Modern e-bikes, with lighter, more
efficient reliable motors and smaller
high-capacity batteries are virtually
unrecognisable from what many
people think when e-bikes are
mentioned. So the first problem is
educating the public, hardly a new
issue, but one of our major hurdles.
When a customer expresses an
interest in e-bikes in a bike shop we
know they are often asked the
question; “why on earth would you
want an e-bike?” However, with fuel
“E-bikes are not all
the same, and just as
different cyclists
have a variety of
needs, so will an
e-bike rider.”
Paul Stanforth, EBC
prices on the rise, the need for an
alternative to commuting by car or
public transport and the modern ebike offering an efficient, fun and
reliable way to get about the question
should be; “why on earth would you
not want an e-bike?”
The second barrier is lack of
understanding of the sector and
customers. E-bikes are not all the same,
and just as different cyclists have a
variety of needs, so will a potential
e-bike rider. So a store needs to
understand its customer base and be
ready to encourage an entirely new
customer group. We have seen the
emerging e-bike market begin to grow
and segment into three clear groups.
This growth is fuelled by new customers
joining the traditional grey-market,
which continues for e-bike sales. Firstly
there is the ‘commuter’ or value end.
This customer may or may not be
using the C2W scheme, but they are
certainly on a similar budget. They
require leading edge technology, solid
design, but perhaps no-frills as they
are very much a utilitarian user.
Secondly, there is the ‘enthusiast’
who will be looking for performance
with cutting edge tech. Finally there is
the ‘style-conscious’ with design at
the forefront of their needs. They will
be looking for something with drop
dead gorgeous looks. Both enthusiast
and style customers will be prepared
to pay for either of these ‘traits’ but
they rarely combine the two needs.
We are so confident that we have
these segments right we’ve built our
range around it. EBCO (our ‘house
brand’) offers great value for money,
the TranzX system works well, the
bikes are reliable and comfortable.
Great for utilitarian riders. AVE all
feature Bosch centre-drive motor
(recognised as leading the field) and
the range includes models that can
cope with on and off-road. This is the
enthusiast’s bike. Finally Solex,
developed by Pininfarina (think Ferrari
and Maserati) has the looks that will
turn heads. If it’s aesthetics a rider is
after, we’ve got the best available.
All these brands are backed up with
solid marketing, a UK-based reliable
service centre and good after-sales
support. This is comforting for the
customer and imperative for the dealer.
So, want to know where the e-bike
sector is? Stop looking to the continent
and look who’s outside your front door.
The e-bike market has matured into a
serious sector and needs to be taken
seriously. A well thought out and
targeted strategy for e-bikes will deliver
significant sales, as some of our
retailers can testify to already.

ABUS
Abus produces a
seven-model
strong line of
children’s helmets
Kids’ Lids
Injury prone toddlers and kids often require the most
protection while learning to cycle, particularly of their
noggin and its contents. Abus helmet designer Marc
von Dunten talks to Mark Sutton about the process of
designing helmets for various stages of youth…
Can you give us a brief history of ABUS
children’s helmets?
ABUS started manufacturing helmets in 1992
relying on existing well-known German
manufacturers. Since 2007 we focused more of
our resources to create our own models with
distinct styling based around best sellers such
as the ‘Super Chilly’.
What expertise in helmet design does ABUS
as a company have?
Our R&D facilities are based in Germany, which
means we are in a great position to control the
development of our helmets and ensure that
they meet all of the necessary safety features
required. It also allows us to bring ideas quickly
to reality.
With 20 years experience working closely
with our partners and end-consumers we are
able to respond to market needs. Because of
this we have received a lot of positive feedback,
great magazine reviews and recognition such as
the Eurobike Award and the Red Dot Design
award, while also been able to incorporate good
safety features within the design.
What process does ABUS go through when
designing a helmet?
The most important point is the fit. For this, we
start by creating a mould out of clay.
This first draft is inspired by our current
range to keep sizing consistent. We then look at
current trends and the target group, looking for
inspiration from bike designs, family-design and
in addition, also from fashion and sometimes
automotive design.
48 BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER
We discuss this first idea in a group of
experts and look for potential improvements.
After a detailed briefing and final
modifications, we scan the clay model to get
digital data.
This data is the base for computer models
and a first stereolitograph prototype. We verify
the fitting and look of our kid’s helmets with
the help of our most important professionals –
our own children. The next step is building a
first prototype tool and the certification at the
German TÜV institute – all our helmets are
certified according to the CE standard 1078 and
TÜV/GS. After passing the test, we start the
first trial production and then later, the mass
production process.
What innovation and key features does
ABUS bring to children’s helmets?
ABUS key features include deep fitting, good
temple and neck protection, high-level comfort,
including straps and padding, flat rear design for
a good fit when used with child seats and
trailers and each helmet is fitted with a precise
adjustable headring. We also include high
visibility reflectors and rear lights in several
models to increase safety, as well as optional
winter kits for those colder winter days.
How is the children’s helmet market
developing and what trends do you see?
Kids helmets are becoming more of a fashion
item and children tend to enjoy wearing
helmets especially if it is a fun design, we are
also finding children want helmets just like their
parents, so we have a range of helmets based
on adult designs. At the same time, safety and
function must be the priority and fulfil the
technical requirements at a reasonable price.
We see a growing amount of awareness from
parents realising the importance of a good
quality helmet as our latest figures show a
constant increase in sales of children’s helmets.
“Kids helmets
are becoming
more of a
fashion item,
children enjoy
wearing them.”
Marc von Dunten,
Abus
What sets ABUS apart from competitors in
children’s helmets?
The reason ABUS originally started the helmet
business was the idea of giving kids more safety
in traffic. We put safety first, which is
highlighted by our features like reflectivity, LED
lights and high impact resistance.
How many products are there in the range
of children’s helmets?
We provide seven different models, from very
small toddler helmets to trendy teen helmets.
Does ABUS offer any licensed designs,
perhaps of cartoon characters?
Not currently. We are solely focused on good
shape and innovative graphic design.
Do any of the helmets host attachments for
lights or reflectors, or feature any reflective
detailing in the design work?
For us, visibility is a main safety issue, mainly
for kids in traffic. Every ABUS helmet has high
visibility reflectors incorporated in the design
and we also have a good selection of helmets
which are equipped with a multifunction LED
rear light.

Supply the trade?
Then get a case of pfps!
Pfps might sound like a new street drug, but Partner Finance
Promotions is actually a new initiative that allows suppliers
to influence and enhance retail promotions in store…
ONE OF the biggest challenges for a brand
owner is how to influence a consumer’s
purchasing decisions on the shop floor. IBD
suppliers recruit a dealer base to meet their
objectives, but how to influence which
products are given prime promotion, how to
create momentum around new initiatives or
product launches, how to better ensure selling
up price points and how to ease sell through of
old ranges, without encouraging price
promotion and margin loss?
Pfps allows suppliers of bikes and other big
ticket items to create promotions in store
using retail finance. Enabling a consumer to
spread the cost of a purchase is one of the
most powerful sales tools available to the
outdoor pursuits market. It can be used to
convert sales, add more accessories into the
mix and upsell price points, especially in the
current uncertain economic market. Despite a
recent downturn in bicycle and other large
ticket sales due to the economy, sales achieved
via retail finance have inevitably continued to
grow, at a pace.
How does it work?
Pfps are delivered via the Ride It Away retail
finance programme, which now encompasses
over 500 dealerships nationwide and is the
largest scheme of its type. Any IBD can enrol in
the programme via www.actsmart.biz.
Suppliers can follow these simple steps to
create their own finance promotion to meet
individual objectives:
Select a product range, individual models or
entire brand ranges that they wish to
promote.
Select retailers from the Ride It Away
network and invite them to participate.
Choose the opening and closing dates for
the promotion.
Select from a wide range of APR and
payment term options to direct sales or help
clear residual stocks.
BIKEBIZ.COM
Suppliers can then decide how they want to
help incentivise a promotion by part funding a
retailer’s subsidy costs, which are minimised
through the pfps structure, representing low
level marketing costs as opposed to potentially
expensive product price promotion.
Consumer promotion will be assisted by
listing the brand promotion and participating
retailers via The Cycling Experts, used by an
ever increasing range of consumer websites,
including British Cycling.
At the close of the promotion the brand
owner receives a subsidy contribution
statement for credit, minimising the cost of
promotion to their retail partners.
But does it work?
Like the experts gift card, pfps is already
proven in the musical instrument industry:
WHAT NEXT?
Suppliers can apply for partner finance promotions online, without
obligation, at www.pfps.biz.
If you’re a retailer or supplier and want to compare the cost of finance
promotions vs. price promotion and clearance check out our calculator
in the ActSmart Business Support section.
“We have processed just
under 1,000 sales since Take
it Today launched in March
2011 and anticipate this to
double in 2012”
A zero per cent interest repayable over 24 months offer is cheaper
than a 12.5 per cent retail price discount.

Outdoor Trade
Show 2012
Jonathon Harker
takes a look at this
month’s ‘no frills’
trade event for the
outdoors industry,
and some of the new
products you can
expect to see there…
By Jonathon Harker
THE SEVENTH edition of the UK’s own
Outdoor Trade Show is just around the
corner.
Running from Friday September 7th to
Wednesday 12th (the final day being for
tents only) the show will be located again
at the Stoneleigh Park Exhibition Centre in
Warwickshire.
As regular readers will know, this year
the show has teamed up with the Tent
Show for the first time, but 2012 also
marks another first for the show – Sunday
will be an open day enabling busy
independent retailers to make the trip
without missing out on potential sales.
Making the show more accessible has
been a priority in general, with an
extension of opening times on Sunday
and Monday – now open until 7pm.
The ‘no frills’ show is timed specifically
so retailers can place forward orders for
spring and summer – and top up orders
for pre-Christmas deliveries.
OTS organiser Marta Williams said of
this year’s show: “We have listened to the
feedback provided by retailers at last
year’s show and created an exciting new
format for 2012 as a result. We are
confident that this will satisfy the
demands of all who attend, making OTS a
cost-effective platform to do some
serious business. Retailers can discover
new brands and innovative products as
well as visiting existing suppliers, making
the journey an extremely worthwhile
experience.”
Fellow show organiser Alasdair Scobbie
added: “We have great expectations about
the 2012 show and have risen to the
challenge of keeping it fresh with the new
format being introduced this year. We are

visitors, as well as providing a great mix

NOVEL AWARDS
By the time you read this entries to the
Outdoor Trade Show Novel Awards will be
closed for all eight categories. Last year
over the prizes saw over 100 entries,
inspiring a new category for 2012 – ‘Tents
and Awnings’. Clothing, sleeping bags,
footwear, rucksacks/travel luggage,
camping equipment, climbing equipment
and accessories are also hotly contested
categories at the Novel Awards.
PRODUCT PREVIEW
The new tent collection from Eureka! will
be at the OTS at Stand 312b indoors, or
Tent Area RB5. Additions to the range
include the new Wicki Up (pictured right),
an ultra lightweight tent weighing a mere
1.85kg for a three-person version and
2.7kg for a four-person version. Offering
the best space-to-weight ratio in the
collection, the pyramid-style tent uses
20D Ripstop nylon fabric and one central
pole for fast erection.
Also new from the brand is the Eureka!
Tentomatic series, introducing an
innovative technology that allows it to be
easily ‘popped up’ in a mere four minutes.
To get the tent up you lift the central
frame hub and gently pull the joints of
the six legs – then the whole tent,
including the two sleeping rooms and a
sewn-in floor, is up. The double roof keeps
the tent cool inside and offers better UV
protection during summer. There’s even a
roof window for star gazing or to check if
it’s still raining. Six large windows offer a
panoramic view for campers too.
01752 241010
Sleeping bag firm Snugpak is launching a
new innovation based on the success of
its insulated Softie jacket. At stand 41, the
brand’s British-made (in West Yorkshire)
jackets use Softie Premier insulation and
include mid-layer jackets that are warm,
water resistant and windproof. The
warmest in the selection is the SJ9, using
Softie 9 insulation. With a fully insulated
hood and coming in a wide variety of
colours (including, yes, camo) the SJ9 is
ideal for extreme winter conditions or
when stationary for longer periods.
Away from jackets, Snugpak will also
showcase its new Travelpak collection – a
range of lightweight, antibacterial and
mosquito-free sleeping bags.
The line-up includes a handy reading
light pocket on the hood (lights sold
separately) and has offerings for
everything from extreme winter
conditions to less chilly summer nights.

COMMENT
The past few weeks at the BikeBiz offices, which also house
numerous other print and online trade titles, have been
interesting to observe. Strangely similar to the motorist
avoiding London during the Olympics and finding alternate
means of travel in, out and around the capital, we’ve had a
‘ban’ on parking at the office while some painters and
decorators have given the building a lick of paint.
Now declared open once more, the car park is inevitably
full to the brim again, yet for the week or so the ban was
imposed, I heard no complaints. What I did hear was people
talking to each other, planning to walk or cycle as a group
and seemingly looking forward to it. I’ll perhaps get some
stick for this, but that almost never happens – it took a
forced break in the motoring routine to bring about a mini
transport revolution that ultimately seemed to bond a
number of our colleagues.
“The routine engine start can easily
be replaced with a short pedal, or
stroll. The Olympics have proved it in
London and we have at BikeBiz HQ...”
Though a doubled-edged sword, my arrival at work on the
Monday saw a bit of a struggle to lock my bike to the
railings. On the one hand, the spots typically ‘reserved’ for
team BikeBiz had been long taken by the early birds with an
imminent deadline. The brighter flipside is that it was great
to see so many enjoying cycling as a form of transport.
By mid-week and with the sun making a rare appearance, I
had to be a little resourceful to secure a space – the railing
clogged with bikes and enthused by an active start to the day.
So, what does this prove? Drawing once more on the
comparison between what’s happening in London and our
office – let’s call it mini-London – it proves that, with a little
encouragement from the powers that be, it can be done –
the routine engine start can easily be replaced with a short
pedal, or stroll, to the office. Though London clearly requires
some infrastructure changes, the parallels really are that
easily drawn, the car can and no doubt will, eventually, be
phased out of the urban nine-to-five.
It has to start somewhere, though. Personally, I can’t see a
Government being as bold as to bring about the
pedestrianisation of large chunks of cities and entirely
remove cars from central areas any time soon.
Could employers perhaps be encouraged to jump start a
new transport movement in a more significant way than
providing a little tax break on bike purchases? Furthermore,
could our industry lobby for provisions to be made to make
it easy for employers to install cycle parking and provide
incentives to shun four wheels? Build it and they will come.

Gyrobike
ALREADY AT large in the USA, Gyrobike
is coming to the UK, bringing its
unusual three-in-one offering to help
children to ride. The high-tech wheel
uses an invisible ‘gyroscopic procession’
force, which produces high stability
even at low speeds. In a nutshell, this
helps keep the bicycle upright while
learning to ride, offering an alternative
to stabilisers. According to the brand,
the Gyrowheel can be used as a second
stage to learning to ride (after the
balance bike stage), replacing the
standard front wheel, creating a fullyfledged 12-inch kids’ bike with pedals,
ready to teach riding techniques. The
three-in-one Gyrobike comes with a
12-inch Gyrowheel and is available in
four colours: red, pink, green and blue,
and two sizes; 12 and 16-inch. Find out

WINTER CLOTHING
Beat the winter weather…
Winter, summer, what’s the difference I hear you ask, our weather is confused. On the bright side, the
gear featured here works just as well during our moist summers. Mark Sutton rounds up a selection
of the market’s most weatherproof garments...
Moore Large
Hotlines
THE SEASONS in recent years have been,
shall we say, confused. Wet in summer
and dusty on the trail through late
Autumn and even early winter.
That’s why Hotlines is recommending
dealers consider a bit of all weather
clothing, flagging Sombrio’s Moniker
freeride shorts as a great value buy for
those not afraid of baring their legs. Fully
water repellent and with laminated side
pockets, seams and tough stitching, the
Moniker’s are prepared for a little muck,
and are knee length, providing your
customer with some coverage. The
water-repellent surface works to a
10,000 mm water column. Large belt
loops at the waist and mesh ventilation
at the thigh feature.
Up top, Sombrio’s Vapor jacket
provides a slim cut, tough articulated
elbows, a hidden inner pocket shockcord
waistband retension system and a
peaked hood, itself adaptable via a
hidden cord lock. Again, this is water
resistant to a 10,000 mm water column
and is fully seam sealed.

WITH A comprehensive
catalogue of clothing and

brands and price points
low to high, there’s very
little that Moore Large
doesn’t carry in regards
to winter clothing.
Dealers have the
choice of Outeredge,
Proviz, Vangard and
Limar, among others
when choosing stock. A
highlight from Outeredge
featured in this year’s
catalogue is the Windster
glove – a lightweight,
breathable and wind resistant garment
with a soft Lycra cuff and a rubberised
grip.
Vangard is expert in baselayers,
among other things and the Windflex
line comes highly recommended by
the consumer press, with the likes of
Cycling Weekly and Triathlon Plus
offering up ‘recommended tags’. The

particular is one of the more versatile

Fiend
Seventies: 0845 3103670
HASTINGS BMX specialist Seventies has just received
its first complete delivery of US brand Fiend, produced
by X-Games medallist Garrett Reynolds, alongside a
team of some of the world’s best known 20-inch
riders.
Largely produced in black and a translucent red
shade (as pictured left), the product line is made up of
the ‘Embryo’ frame and fork, JJ Palmere padded denim
finish saddles, pivotal seatposts, stunt pegs, handlebars
in 8.25 and 8.5 rise, as well as a number of beanies,
hats and t-shirts to complement the hard goods.
Made in Taiwan, the Embryo frame sports a built-in
seat clamp, slammed dropouts, a mid bottom bracket,
strengthening gussets at the head tube, tapered seat
stays and a 75-degree head angle that’ll be great for
riders who like to nose manual.

2012 SAW the return of the Patriot to the Orange
line-up, sporting a revised geometry and updated
suspension curve.
Once again revising the bike, based on consumer
and trade feedback, the manufacturer will fit the
2013 rig with a 180mm travel single crown Fox 36
Vanilla Factory Series RC2 Kashima fork. Combined
with the Vanilla RC rear shock, the Patriot becomes a
whole lot more reliable. For those customers who
want more adjustability, or to fine tune their ride,
Cane Creek Double Barrel coil and air shock upgrades
are available from Orange’s options list.
An extensive list of shock, brake, bottom bracket,
seatpost and freeride pack options are available to
make your customer’s bike unique and to fit with
their budget.
Complete Patriot bikes start at £3,399.99, frames
start at £1,749.99.
FRESH OFF the back of announcing the distribution
deal, Upgrade wanted to get talking about how
Praxis rings can benefit the performance cyclist.
There’s four types of ring on offer – road,
mountain, cross and singlespeed – each offering
‘good value, especially when compared to the only
other forged-capable brand on the market, Shimano,’
says Upgrade.
Forging the rings greatly improves the accuracy of
each shift and as such, the longevity of each cog’s
life, as well as that of the chain. Upgrade says that
with the dawn of an electronic transmission era, such
things are increasingly important to many buying
into top end drivetrain kit.
There are a wide range of cog ratios on offer and
as an incentive to dealers, Orange coloured sets are
offered at cost price for demo use with customers.

THE MAIN function of the co2 pump is quickly and

BAMBOO CLOTHING aficionado Whackjob has
announced the addition of a brand new jersey range
to its expanding line up of technical ride and casual

The new trail jersey features a rear pocket, ‘bike

With an RRP of £35 and strong dealer margins,
the new Whackjob jersey is available on general

There is a full marketing programme underway to
support the new and existing products and this
includes being the shirt partner to the recent
Bontrager TwentyFour12.
ALREADY THE recipient of a Red Dot product design
award, Biologic’s take on the integrated post pump
has ‘three important advantages’ compared to
standard hand pumps.
Philip Robinson, inventor of the PostPump concept
said: “First, it has a much higher stroke capacity, so it
takes a lot fewer pumps to get your tyre inflated.
Anyone who’s arm has cramped and has had to take
a break while pumping can appreciate this. Second it
works exactly like a floor pump; you stand and push
down to pump. And finally, because the pump is
hidden inside your seatpost, it’s always ready when
you need it.”
The ergonomic design has a flip-out foot stand
and makes use of the saddle as a handle so the user
can comfortably stand while pumping. The patented
2.0 design is thoroughly reworked with precisionmachined aluminum fittings to increase maximum
pressure and stroke volume. In addition, a flip-to-fit
adapter makes switching between Presta and
Schrader valves extremely convenient.
BEST KNOWN for its balance bike line for toddlers,
Kiddimoto has now come to market with an
enlarged version of its wooden bike for those with
special needs, enabling them to master their skills of
balance and coordination.
What’s more, the seat is height adjustable so it
can be lowered or raised to accommodate the
comfort and growth of the rider. These bikes made
are with durable birch plywood frames and real
pneumatic tyres, providing a comfortable, puncturefree ride.
The retail price for the Middi is £139.99 and is
available with matching helmets £24.99 and gloves,
£7.99 for each design.

STAR LETTER
BikeBiz is keen to publish your opinions, whether they’re from
letters, emails or via BikeBiz.com...
Recession?
What recession?
Last month BikeBiz led with a story on how the
weather was affecting bike business takings, though
it seems the rain wasn’t a washout for everyone…
Dear BikeBiz
I HAVE to be honest, we are having a great
year with our bike storage units! It may sound
crazy, but when the weather is really bad
(such as the snow last year and the terrible
rain in May and June) we go on to have a
surge of business on our website. It seems
that cyclists who can’t get out and ride their
bike want to keep it clean and dry and just
look after it. The recent rise in cycle theft (in
the last 18 months) has probably helped too.
Whatever
happened
to...?
Dear BikeBiz
I WAS flicking through August’s BikeBiz in the
National Cycle Museum, this morning and I
noticed the article about bicycle security on
page 46.
I have long thought that with the amount
of cycle theft we hear about that bicycle
security needs improving (other than
chains) and that there used to be bicycles
with a key lock in the headstock.
I don’t know why that idea was
discontinued but at least it stops someone
riding away on a bike that isn’t theirs.
Surely this is more practical than any other
idea? Most stolen bikes are likely to be ridden
away – it would prevent the front wheel from
being steered!
Do you know why the idea was
discontinued?
Freda Davies,
Curator, National Cycle Museum
We have actually had to deal with the
awful problem of pushing out delivery times
as we simply couldn’t make the units quick
enough at one point.
We had to take on more guys in the
factory to cope with demand and we are just
about back on track now with a maximum
delivery time of four week for most units.
Recession??? What recession?

THE BIBLE
IS BACK!
72 BIKEBIZ SEPTEMBER
Are you offering any 29ers?
We currently have a high-end steel
hardtail 29er and in anticipation of
longer suspension travel versions of
29ers being in demand have an enduro
full sus’ model being sampled.
Can you see the trend lasting? Those who have them love them –
those who don’t have them usually
have a range of preconceptions which
need addressing before they’ll step up
to the plate. So I think it’s a case of
dealers and the press continuing to
champion the design for it to prevail.
Then of course there is the 27.5-inch
trend that’s developing which probably
is more of a threat. We’ve a 27.5 design
worked up for evaluation which should
prove an interesting comparison.
How far has Dalby progressed as a
focal point for mountain biking?
Dalby’s attracting 400 to 500 thousand
visitors a year and hopefully growing,
and we at Pace are doing our part to
support that trend both by expanding
our product and services through our
Dalby Service Centre, Dalby Bike Barn
and Trailside businesses, partnering with
CTC and bundling our offer with other
local businesses such as Go Ape.
Hopefully this should also benefit the
visitor and provide greater
opportunities for growth.
Our business model is to take the
business to the customer rather than
the other way around and our Demo
Centre is a good example of that –
dealers send their customers to Dalby
to test a Pace bike and of course
customers are generally very happy to
demo a bike in such a great
environment as Dalby. We refer the sale
back to the dealer, customer’s happy
and Pace strengthen the dealer/
customer/brand relationship. It’s a win-
win situation. As a small family
business it’s a more personal service
and very different from major brands. As CTC’s Centre of Excellence we see
Dalby has great potential to attract
more road riders and those new to
cycling, rather than solely preaching to
the converted MTBer. If we can make a
visitor’s experience thrilling and fun
without being intimidating or too
challenging then hopefully they’ll go
away hooked, visit their local dealer
and become a convert.
How’s business in general? Our 29ers certainly been successful for
us, but in common with many brands
have seen complete bike sales a
challenge. Generally however, business
is very good and it’s nice to see growth
(mostly through diversification) and
new products coming forward.
What’s coming up for Pace in 2013?
We’re expecting to make an important
announcement about a very interesting
new project we’ve been working on for
the past year or so soon, and now Pace
is very much a family business with
both our daughters Aimee and Sophie
(pictured) in the office, we hope to see
new activities, products and events
being offered. Also with a full time CTC
Cycling Development Officer on site
that should bring expansion.
Will you be at any of the shows?
None planned until we have our new
models in place, then we’ll be back on
the expo’ circuit again!
How can the trade get in touch?
Through our office 01751 460599,
website www.pacecycles.com or
Facebook. We’re always happy to hear
from new customers and can have a
product to a new dealer within 24hrs.

SALES TRAINING
One shop adds £100k to his turnover
from just one idea following a sales
training course.
Extra profits, immediate results...
Sales training can easily double your business. If every customer who comes in
to buy an accessory goes out with two, you just doubled your accessory sales.
A sales training course on your least busy day can realistically double the sales each
staff member produces from your present customer base. The youngest sales people
vastly increase in confidence, the longer serving staff suddenly realise there are
modern techniques they did not know about. It's not about hard selling, its about
understanding the sales process. Four hours later, your sales will start to increase.
Here's what dealers who have had the course say:
"You trained us in the morning, by that afternoon,
I had the course fee back. Amazing."
"I cannot understand why every dealer in the Uk is not banging on your door.
Everyone is so much more confident. Now we have to work on keeping
it that way. Totally recommendable"
"The boys really enjoyed your session the other day and are trying
to prove who can remember the techniques best.
The till is certainly ringing a lot more than it was, thanks Colin"
"You remember I told you I had loads of trouble selling accessories when I sold
a new bike? The first bike I sold after you came went out with 13 accessories!
They cost more than the bike, I still don't believe I did it. Thanks Colin"
One fee, no extras, progress guaranteed:

OFF TRACK
Let’s get
statistical
Our latest barrage of statistics includes which stories were most
popular on BikeBiz.com (in our biggest month ever), plus some
more figures on the ‘Wiggo effect’ and the performance of our
glorious Team GB’s cyclists. Let’s hope there are more medals to
report on from the Paralympics next month (no pressure)…
Rob Montgomery,
BH Sales Manager for Maxtrack
How many bikes do you own and what’s your favourite
place to ride?
I have recently sold my own personal bikes due to a shortage
of space – and because I now have a fleet of 23 demo bikes
to choose from! But I have kept my Raleigh Chopper mk1 and
‘80s Haro minilite BMX, both awaiting restoration. If you
asked me last year I’d have said my favourite place to ride was
undiscovered woodland, but now it would have to be on the
trails/cycle paths my family can participate on as I’ve
reintroduced cycling to my wife. She has really taken to the ebikes and my daughter also loves them. My eldest son cannot
get enough of the surge on take-off, plus the ability to climb
steep banks and rutted pathways. I have a baby seat on the
mine, so we do look a sight arriving at a ride with four e-bikes
ranging from a step-through city commuter, two MTBs and
one hybrid.
What’s your background?
We immigrated to the UK five years ago and in South Africa I
had my own business in the automotive field. Once here I had a
period of consolidation working for a well-known satellite firm
but moved on to Maxtrack, an extreme sports distribution
company responsible for distribution of the BH Emotion electric
bicycles in the UK. My passions include cycling, ‘70s and ‘80s
cars, motorbikes and bicycles, but first and foremost is enjoying
my fantastic family, watching them grow and develop.
What’s your role at BH?
Sales manager responsible for the appointing, support and
development of dealers for the BH Emotion electric bikes in
the UK including brand building. To be honest with you the
bikes sell themselves, so my main function is to provide a
fantastic aftersales service to our dealer network and
promoting the brand, directing customers to our dealers.
50,000
British Cycling membership signed its 50,000th member
during the Team Sky dominated Tour de France.
19%
Following Raleigh’s acquisition by Dutch
group Accell, turnover for the group
increased 19 per cent to €445.6m in the
first half of 2012.
What can we expect from the new BH ranges?
The 2013 range will launch at Eurobike so I can’t say too
much, but it will certainly elevate the brand as one the
leading manufacturers of e-bikes. Our existing dealer network
will have a fantastic range to grow this part of their
businesses, so an exciting 2013 lies ahead. We will be at most
if not all of the shows remaining this year in the UK.
How should bike dealers get in touch?
Prospective dealers can get in touch with Maxtrack HQ
distribution and warehousing at New Rock, Kemply Road,
Dymock, GL18 2BB. Dealers can call 01531890955 or 07804
413083, or email info@maxtrack.com or rob@bh-emotion.co.uk.

Ivan the Terrible
comes to Tour of Britain
THE INCREASINGLY prestigious Tour of Britain is to see Team Liquigas-Cannondale take
part for the first time this September. Two-times Giro d’Italia winner Ivan Basso will lead
the team, himself making his ToB debut. The Tour gets started on Sunday September 9th
in East Anglia, finishing in Guildford on Sunday 16th.
Box Hill ring road
UNDERSTANDABLY PROUD of seeing the Olympic cycle road races (and time
trial) routes go through the county, Surrey Council erected Hollywood hills-style
Giant Olympic rings during London 2012. Located on the side of the National
Trust’s Box Hill, the council didn’t say when – or if – they’ll be taking them down.
Strider World Cup
EARLIER THIS summer saw Manchester host
the Strider UK World Cup. Open only to two
to five-year olds, 120 of the country’s best
balance bike riders took part on the
National Cycling Centre’s BMX track. The
winner will go on to represent the UK at
Strider’s World Championships this October
in Florida. The NCC is to run weekly Strider
training at the world-class facility. There’s

WE’RE A bit late with this one, but we had to
find space to fit Tour de France uber fan Didi

managed to score his own marketing deal
with the UK’s-own Wiggle. Didi ‘the Devil’
swapped his trademark red for Wiggle orange
at two stages of Le Tour in July. Is this the
first time a fan has won a sponsorship deal?

British enthusiasts and

must put the bicycle at the

After #allezwiggo,

Wondering what the Twitterati have been up
to this month? Look no further...
A Brit winning the Tour de France is monumental but, asks
Carlton Reid, will it lead to a cycling sales surge?
BRADLEY WIGGINS and Team Sky dominated the 2012
Tour de France for the best part of three weeks, snuffing
out any serious attacks and eventually landing the maillot
jaune on British shoulders for the first time in the Tour’s
99 outings. It was a supreme, inspiring, glorious
achievement.
Within seconds of his podium appearance on the
Champs Elysées, cycle advocates were asking whether
Bradley Wiggins could be the pedalling messiah, here to
deliver us to the Promised Land, a future not of milk and
honey, or lambs lying down with
lions, but of segregated cycle
paths and motorists happy to
have cyclists taking up ‘primary
position’ on the roadspace in
front of them.
This an awful lot to expect
from a whippet-thin lad from
Kilburn. The BBC said he has a
heart like a bucket but that was
a reference to his engorged
ventricles not his propensity for
fighting the good fight on
behalf of Britain’s commuter cyclists.
Bike shops, too, are expecting an awful lot to cascade
down from a Wiggins win, and from the success of British
cyclists at the Olympics. They are on slightly safer ground
than the cycle advocates. The seven year-long Lance
Armstrong effect on US bike sales was real, and Australia
also experienced a one year fillip thanks to last year’s Tour
de France victory by Cadel Evans. Success definitely
breeds success, and Team Sky’s belief that it – and the
joined-at-the-hip British Cycling – can be the Manchester
United or Barcelona of cycling bodes well for UK cycle
sport. There’s gonna be a lot of wannabe Wiggins in our
future, and they’re gonna need bikes to train, race and
dream on.
The ‘Bradley Wiggins effect’ - or, more accurately, the
‘Hoy-Cavendish-Wiggins-Pendleton-etc-etc effect’ – will
definitely have a long term impact on cycle racing in the
UK. It’s already had that impact: just look at the number
of young riders coming through the track ranks from the
British Cycling star factory. How far will this effect reach?
In a BBC radio show interview following the Tour de
France the host started his interview by telling me he had
been inspired by Wiggins to start cycling, digging his
dusty bike out of the garage. He complained about bum
pain and asked how to alleviate this (“ride more,” I said)
but said he had enjoyed the pootle
so much he was going out again at
the weekend, this time with his
young son.
British sporting success at Le Tour,
and at the Olympics, will definitely
stimulate cycle usage. But there are
many other factors at play, too. The
weather, urban congestion, fuel prices,
health fears, tree hugging, and others.
Cycle use is steadily growing in the
UK and it’s not just because our
Lycra-clad superstars. It’s a perfect
storm of interlinked yet disparate factors that bode well
for the bike trade’s future.
The Queen sent a congratulatory message to Bradley
Wiggins after he won Le Tour; Rupert Murdoch tweeted
incessantly about Team Sky’s star cyclists; and cycling is
now mainstream news, on the radar at last.
This needs to be translated into cash-on-the-ground.
Government departments need to wake up to the
positives possible with cycling and start to invest real
money in infrastructure and in promotion too.
The Departments of Health and Transport and
Culture/Sport, and the Treasury, could win big if they
chose to back cycling.
