That’s not Germany as a whole but Bavaria – the southern part of Germany. Bavarians are known for their easy-going, fun-loving nature. The Catholic Calendar of religious events builds the backbone for many boisterous festivals and fascinating rites throughout the year, such as the May Processions honoring Virgin Mary. However, the dance around the maypole is the kick-off for the many festivals that take place throughout the summer with the forest festivals being created to honor traditions, family merits and friendship. These festivals are known as the forerunner to the Octoberfest. The lake festivals are a glamorous fest with huge firework displays over the lake at night. No matter which festival you choose to attend, you will see attendees dressed in the most colorful and authentic costumes, the Dirndl and Lederhose. Never Too Early for a Weissbier: One Bavarian tradition that holiday makers from all over the world cherish is the so-called “Frühschoppen”. The participants in the Bavarian second breakfast will start their day with a meal of savory white sausages, the Weisswürste, with sweet mustard, a freshly baked pretzel and a nice tall glass of cold and fresh Weissbier. If you do not want to be “outed” as a tourist, please keep in mind that no Weisswurst is served after the 12noon bell! Luckily, they will serve you if asked but just know that your waiter will be shaking their head while taking your order. Ancient Sights of the Tegernsee Valley: Sightseeing in this special corner of Bavaria is far from an arduous task: most of its architectural gems are surrounded by splendid landscapes and in the immediate vicinity of shady beer gardens or a homely country inn. On Mount Wallberg and along the Tegernsee hiking trails, small mountain chapels are often consecrated to Mother Mary. On the lakeshore, you will be able to visit many baroque churches with magnificent interiors. Day-trips to the greater region will bring you to stunning medieval castles and remote country churches. The most popular pilgrimages of all take you to some of the famous beer-making cloisters of Bavaria, where you may admire the architecture, enjoy a brewery tour and relax under the trees with a delicious snack and a cold beer. The Bräustüberl Beer Hall: Benedictine Monks were the very first inhabitants of the Tegernsee Valley. More than 1250 years ago they built a cloister on the serene south-eastern lakeshore, which over time was turned into the Bavarian king’s summer residence, and later came to host a brewery, the local high school and the famous Bräustüberls Beer Hall. This bustling beer vault is always alive with chatter and attracts guests from all over Bavaria and the world! Its popularity is based on its spaciousness and comfort for large groups, the impressive medieval architecture and historical murals as well as for its own ‘Tegernsee Hell’ lager beer, which is a piece of heaven. Tegernsee Abbey: Next door to the beer hall, you will step into a completely different sphere: the vast stucco and marble-floored abbey is a place for quiet contemplation and to admire the craftsmanship of the great baroque master Hans Georg Asam. Catholic mass and many weddings are held here, and if your timing is good, you might even catch a musical performance. Please remember to respect the religious ceremonies you may come across: refrain from flash photography and keep noise down. Suggested Stay: 2 weeks Getting to Israel Israel’s main international airport is Tel Aviv’s BenGurion International Airport and is used as a hub for Israel’s three airports. Flight time from the East Coast of the United States is approximately 11 hours and 17 from the West Coast. There are direct flights from the US from Delta, El-Al, US Airways and United, flying from JFK, Newark, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles. By Land: The only way to get into Israel is from Jordan or Egypt. Amman is only a short two hour drive from Jerusalem which includes the half hour to cross the border. By Sea: All major Mediterranean cruise ships dock in Israel for at least a night, usually two. Israel: A Brief History There is no way to squeeze Israel’s history in just a few lines. Most of the world’s Great Empires have ruled this country - the Assyrians, Babylonians, Egyptians, Persians, Greek, Romans, Muslims, Crusaders, Ottomans and the British Empire to name a few. But only the Jews have formed an independent state on this piece of land. The first was the Kingdom of David, second the Maccabean in the 2nd Century BCE, and the 3rd is the Modern State of Israel, established in 1948. Today, Israel is a fascinating mixture of ancient ruins and fundamental religions, with striking high-tech innovations, which gave it the nick-name “the Start-up Nation”. It is not unlikely to see a flock of camels walking near one of Israel’s innovative laboratories. Geography Located on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean, Israel is comprised of a variety of breathtaking landscapes from the Negev Desert in the South to the inland Jezreel Valley, mountain ranges of the Galilee, Carmel, and toward the Golan in the north. The Jordan River runs along the Jordan Rift Valley from Mount Hermon to the Sea of Galilee which is green all year round and to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on the surface of the Earth. 48 About Israel My Way Founded in 2007, Israel My Way designs and operates customized tours for groups, families, individuals, and business people alike to discover this beautiful country in their own time, at their own pace, and in their own style. Major Cities and Points of Interest Jerusalem: One of the oldest cities in the world and the holy city to three monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianity, and Islam). It is a fascinating place where the first and the twenty-first century intertwine. The city is large, and can be separated into several distinct areas including: The Old City and its walls form the UNESCO World Heritage Site - this breathtaking ancient city is home to holy sites for the Jews, Christians, and Muslims including the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Temple Mount, and the Western Wall. West Jerusalem - the Jewish-Israeli section of the city and is the modern, commercial heart of the city. Ein Kerem - a village neighborhood in West Jerusalem. It is surrounded by picturesque mountains, olive and cypress trees, and home to an artistic community with many artists living in the area. Several churches located here are believed to be built on the birthplace of John the Baptist. ASIA • ISRAEL Moving Around Israel Since Israel has so many layers of history behind every building, stone, and tree it is highly recommended to visit this unique country with the help of a guide. Israel’s tour guides are well known for their in-depth knowledge, and while touring with a guide you will not only ‘see’ places, but the bible and history will come alive. A private guide can be hired not only for groups, but also for small families and even couples. The guide can drive his own car, or your rental car. Israel My Way will work with you to customize your ideal itinerary and assign one of its top-notch guides to lead you through the country. Tel Aviv: The second largest city in Israel and has transformed into an exciting bustling metropolis and is known for its exciting nightlife, young atmosphere and famous 24 hour culture (the city is referred to by the locals as “the city that never stops”). No trip to Tel Aviv is complete without a visit to the fantastic beach and experiencing all the culture that comes with. The city also incorporates the ancient port of Jaffa. Some points of interest include: Rabin Square - the biggest public square in Israel. Old Jaffa historic town with narrow alleys and art galleries. Tel Aviv Port - Commercial area in Northern Tel Aviv featuring popular bars and nightclubs. Dizengoff Center - The most iconic shopping center in Israel. Rothschild Boulevard - Tel Aviv’s prettiest street featuring restaurants, cafes and Bauhaus architecture. Proclaimed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Eilat: A resort town on the “window of the Red Sea” located on the southern tip of the country and devoted to a relaxing, fun atmosphere. The city’s beaches, nightlife and desert landscapes make it a popular destination. Surrounded by the Negev desert, the city offers spectacular desert based activities including hiking, trails, and 4x4 excursions.
