which have reawakened in a blaze of colours and sounds after the lethargy of
spring and the silence of winter.

The dominant colour of this issue is blue, like the sea that washes up on the
shores of several of our region’s most magical places including the Park
of Gaiola (page 10) and Positano, the coast’s most picturesque town with
vertiginous houses tumbling down to the sea in a cascade of lemon groves and
flowers (page 14); blue like the colour of the flags awarded to Campania’s seaside
resorts, serving as certification of their environmental quality.
Luckily, there are also all manner of exciting events taking place this month for
those who decide to stay in the city, including, for example, the last dates of the
May of the Monuments event (page 34).

► As part of the ‘L’Ospite illustre’ project, Naples will host the
Harlequin with Glass, one of Pablo Picasso’s most famous works,
on loan from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid. In
the painting, only the hat references a Harlequin: his costume is
reminiscent of those worn by trapeze artists at circuses while his
face is a clear reference to Pierrot. During the same period, as part
of the Caravaggio y los pintores del Norte exhibition, the Madridbased Museum will host the Martyrdom of Saint Ursula, currently
part of the collection owned by Intesa Sanpaolo, on display at
Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano.

THE WORD TO...
We asked Guglielmo Campajola,
President of the Chiaia Consortium
(which gathers shopowners in the area
under its umbrella) and the owner of
the Gran Caffè La Caffettiera in Piazza
dei Martiri why a tourist should visit
Chiaia.
This quadrilateral, defined as ‘the
living room of Naples’, embodies
centuries of history. It was here that
people drew inspiration for the fashion,
art and culture that defines the
neighbourhood today. For this reason
the Consortium wants to create a
sort of ‘open-air’ Art Gallery. Its alleys
and square will thus tell their stories
through art, culture, shopping and
tastings. Chiaia is the gateway to an
exciting Neapolitan adventure. We

The Chiaia neighbourhood is studded with art
galleries and boutiques, but it’s also the city’s
prime night-life zone. Located just moments
from the sea, it is the ideal place for a relaxing
stroll.
The district, whose name derives from the
Castilian word ‘playa’ (beach), borders on
Fuorigrotta, with the elegant residential
neighbourhoods of Vomero and Posillipo, and
on San Ferdinando, a district of art and culture,
packed with theatres and museums.
It was here, in the 16th century, during the
reign of Charles II of Bourbon, that the Viceroy
of Naples, the Duke of Medina, decided to
create a small, elegant residential town. Located
just outside the walls of the city, at the foot of
Vomero and behind the sea, he embellished it
with gardens and fountains. However, over the
centuries, the area was gradually transformed
and enlarged.
The heart of the Chiaia neighbourhood is the
Riviera di Chiaia, one of the most beautiful
streets in the city which connects piazza Vittoria
to Piedigrotta. The site of one of the first film
shoots by the Lumiere brothers at the end of
the 19th century, the Riviera di Chiaia was also
the area chosen by British writer Mary Shelley
as the birthplace of Dr. Victor Frankenstein, the
main character of her famous book. The area
is also home to the Villa Comunale, one of
the green lungs of the city, built in the 1780s
by Ferdinand of Bourbon. The Villa Comunale
shelters the enormous Cassa Armonica
decorated with coloured stained glass windows
and the Antonio Dohrn Aquarium, the second
oldest aquarium in Europe. Located nearby is
the Neoclassical Villa Pignatelli which, with
its period furnishings, is now a beautiful house
museum. When you need a break from Naples'
hyperactive tendencies, take a stroll along via
Caracciolo, the city’s pedestrianised seafront
strip, leading from piazza Vittoria to the centre
of the city. Offering views that are nothing short
of exquisite, it takes in the entire bay and is
lined with bars, restaurants, pubs and pizzerias.
Overhanging the Lungomare is the outrageously
picturesque Castel dell’Ovo. Built in the 1st
century B.C., it is the oldest fortress in Naples
and one of the city’s most emblematic landmark
attractions. The area is home to several of the
most luxurious and panoramic hotels in the city.
No less charming is the street that leads from the
opposite side towards Mergellina, a picturesque
fishermen’s village featuring distinctive chalets
and a small tourist port.
The Chiaia neighbourhood abounds in
magnificent religious buildings. One such
example is the Church of Piedigrotta where,
each year, in September, the famous festival of
Piedigrotta is held. The right side of the church
overlooks a small park which hosts the Tomb
of Virgil and the sepulcher of the Romantic
poet Giacomo Leopardi. Jacopo Sannazaro
also lived in Mergellina where he founded the
Church of Santa Maria del Pianto. While in
the area, don’t miss a visit to the Church of the
Ascensione and the Church of San Pasquale,
among the most beautiful in Naples. Chiaia
is also the city’s prime nightlife zone. The
quadrangle of streets between Via Poerio,
Via Carducci, Via Santa Caterina and Via
Filangieri are crammed with lots of wine bars,
discotheques, pubs, pizzerias and restaurants,
meaning that nights out on the town can literally
be spent moving from one venue to the next.
However, above all, the neighbourhood is

shopping. Luxury designer boutiques and
several of the city’s most historical stores are
located between Piazza dei Martiri, Via Calabritto
and Via Carlo Poerio.

The tiny archipelago of Li Galli is situated approximately three miles off the coast of Positano. Part
of the protected marine area of Punta Campanella, it is formed by three islands, Gallo lungo, the
largest, La rotonda and La Castelluccia.
The archipelago which, according to legend, was once inhabited by sirens, was purchased in
the 1920s by Russian ballet dancer and choreographer Leonide Massine who built a theatre
and villa on it. A decade after his death, Li Galli was bought by another Russian dancer, Rudolph
Nureyev who planned to open a ballet school on the island. His untimely death prevented
him from fulfilling his dream and, in 1988, the island was once again uninhabited. Since 1993,
it has been owned by an industrialist from Sorrento who bought it for the princely sum of five
billion lire. Li Galli has hosted a roster of
celebrities including Greta Garbo, Roberto
Rossellini, Anna Magnani, Ingrid Bergman,
Jacqueline Kennedy, Aristotele Onassis,
Hillary Clinton and Franco Zeffirelli.
Today, the archipelago can only be reached
by private boat. Although the islands
are tiny and impervious, the beauty of
their crystal-clear waters and magnificent
surrounding scenery are well worth a visit.

species of light blue lizard, now almost
extinct.
Ideally, walks should start from Colle Serra
in Bomerano, on the outskirts of Agerola,
a small town on the hills of the Amalfi
Coast. The footpath, with its vertiginous
panoramas, follows a tortuous route that
rises and dips, affording magnificent views
of the entire coast. It offers hikers a chance
to commune with nature while admiring
caves and the crystalline sea that extends
underfoot, seemingly forever. It is an ideal
route for anyone who enjoys trekking - those
who walk it once fall in love with it forever.
The footpath ends in the village of Nocelle,
on the outskirts of Positano, which can be
reached by bus or, in an extra hour and a half,
on foot. Alternately, an hour-long, 1,700- step
descent, leads to Arienzo, one of Positano’s
most lovely beaches, located just 10 minutes
from the centre of the town. After a walk
along a path worthy of the gods, a refreshing
swim in heavenly waters is a cure-all.

n annual event like no other, set against
the backdrop of the crystalline waters
that bathe the Amalfi Coast. This year,
the prestigious 61st annual Regatta of the
Ancient Maritime Republics will be held on
the Divine Coast.
An event established in 1955 to celebrate
the Republic’s long-lost glory. Four galleons,
each painted with the dominant colours
of their Republic (blue for Amalfi, white for
Genoa, red for Pisa and green for Venice)
battle it out on a 200 metre course on the
stretch of water between Capo di Vettica
and Marina Grande, in Amalfi. The fact
that the competition takes place on the
open sea makes it even more exciting
and unpredictable, due to changeable
currents and weather conditions that are
often uncertain. The crews, consisting of
eight rowers, two reserves and a coxswain,
brave the sea on board craft which though
built along the lines of their 12th century
counterparts are now crafted in fiberglass,
representing a perfect combination of the
past and the future.
An event that though particularly dear to
Amalfi locals is also an absolute must-see for

The regatta begins with a solemn historical
procession embodying four hundred years
of history, summarized in four significant
episodes. Amidst weddings and battles,
conquests and dominations, the four cities
re-enact the most glorious moments of
their history. Three-hundred-and twenty
costumed actors, 80 for each Republic,
parade along the streets from Atrani to
Amalfi while re-enacting significant events,
from the year 1000 to the beginning of the
1500s. The Regatta is the highlight of a
weekend packed with sporting and cultural
events and performances.

number one with the largest number of
championship titles, followed by Amalfi with
10 victories, while Genoa and Pisa lag behind

A common thread that links wine to the cinema: Spanish graphic duo Laovejabala exhibit ten wooden
wine barrels decorated with images borrowed from the world of celluloid

en large wooden wine barrels decorated
with the pictures of legendary stars of
the screen. The Laovejabala project,
linking the world of cinema to wine, is
promoted by Spanish graphic duo Enrique
Martin and Raùl San Cristòbal, the former a
graphic designer and the latter an interior
designer. Natives of La Rioja, the two artists
wished to pay tribute to Naples by exhibiting
several pieces from their ‘Film Barrels
Collections’.
The unusual choice of location makes this
exhibition even more interesting. The
ten wine barrels are, in fact, on exhibit in
the hall of the Reinaissance Naples Hotel
Mediterraneo.
Guests attending the event at the hotel
will be met by images of Malcom X, Alfred
Hitchcock, Bruce Lee, Al Pacino, Philippe
Noiret and Arnold Schwarzenegger whose
faces grace the surfaces of the massive wood
and steel wine barrels displayed in the foyer.
An exhibition open to the public with the
idea that a hotel should not only represent
an exclusive space for those staying there but
should also serve as a sort
of museum space for the
city at large.
The artists also paid
tribute to Naples by
including a barrel
showing Sophia
Loren embracing
Marcello Mastroianni
in their collection.
An unforgettable
movie scene that is
particularly dear to the
hearts of the Neapolitan people.
“The collection stems from an idea of two
worlds that are closely related to our culture,
namely wine and cinema, and barrels provide
the ideal media to achieve this. It is our small
tribute to the world of celluloid. We have
attempted to cover all genres and

CASTEL DELL’OVO - According to ancient Neapolitan
legend, its name stems from the egg which Virgil,
the Latin poet, supposedly hid in its foundations
to support the fortifications. The place where the
egg was preserved was closed by heavy locks and
kept secret because it was believed that all the facts
and fortunes of Castel Marino depended upon it.
From that time onwards, the fate of the castle and
the entire city, was linked to that egg. The castle’s
fortifications and terrace offer a breathtaking view

CASTEL NUOVO - Also known as Maschio Angioino,
it is one of the most recognizable symbols of the
city built in 1279 by Charles I, king of Naples, as
a royal residence for the House of Anjou. From
the time that it was built, it was termed “New” to
distinguish it from the older Castles of Ovo and
Capuano. Worthy of note are its underground
passages, its two towers and its courtyard, from
which you can enjoy a fabulous view, its gallery and
Piazza d’armi.

CASTEL SANT’ELMO - The first documented
information regarding the castle dates back to
1275. This star-shaped castle was originally a church
dedicated to St. Erasmus. In 1329 it was enlarged at
the behest of Robert of Anjou, who transformed it
into a real palatium for himself and his court. Later
Spanish viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo had it further
fortified in 1538. Used as a military prison until the
1970s, in 1976 important restoration work on the
castle began, returning it to its original structure.

CHIESA DEL GESÙ NUOVO - Erected by the Jesuits
between 1584 and 1601, its façade is actually part
of a 15th century Renaissance palace. Its interior is
spacious and light with a rich covering of coloured
marbles and typical Florid Neapolitan frescoes. After
the church was ravaged by fire in 1639, Cosimo
Fanzago was commissioned to carry out restoration
works that gave the Church a Baroque appearance.
Its interior boasts a number of magnificent frescoes
while its chapels feature the works of renowned
artists of the calibre of Massimo Stanzione and
Giuseppe Ribera. Particularly worthy of note are
its sculptorial work and polychrome marble floor.

CHIESA DI SAN DOMENICO MAGGIORE - Charles
II of Anjou began the extensive rebuilding that
produced the Church of San Domenico Maggiore.
The work was done between 1238 and 1324, but
the church has undergone extensive modifications
over the centuries, including one in 1670 that recast
the structure in the style of the Baroque. In the 19th
century, however, the church was restored to its
original Gothic design and is a motley combination
of the two styles. Among the many artistic points
of interest in the basilica are the frescoed ceiling by
Francesco Solimena and sculptorial works, including

CHIESA DI SAN FRANCESCO DI PAOLA - One of the
most characteristic and famous of all Neapolitan
churches. Built in the mid-19th century, its circular
form is reminiscent of the Pantheon in Rome. On
the exterior, under a magnificent colonnade, you
can see the statues of the four cardinal virtues and
the three theological virtues while, at the sides of
the stairway you will find two equestrian statues of
king Ferdinand and his father, Charles III of Spain.

CITTÀ DELLA SCIENZA - The science museum
pride of the city, which attracted thousand of
visitors every year, was almost entirely destroyed
by an arson attack that shook Naples, Italy and the
whole world on March 4 2013. A huge loss that is
already being remedied with the reconstruction.
The pavilions that at the moment are available

COMPLESSO MONUMENTALE DI SANTA CHIARA
- It includes a Church, a Monastery and a Convent.
One of the principal monuments of medieval
Naples, its construction began in 1310 at the behest
of Robert of Anjou and his second wife Sancia di
Maiorca, who, both devotees of St. Francis of Assisi
and Santa Chiara, wanted to build a Franciscan
citadel to house the Clarisse nuns in the monastery
and the Friars Minor in the adjacent convent.
Behind the church is the Cloister of the Clarisse, the
monastery’s main cloister, strikingly decorated with
bright majolica tiles and considered a masterpiece

DUOMO - Known as the Duomo di San Gennaro or
Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, the Cathedral was
erected at the end of the 13th century by Charles
of Anjou. Its present appearance is the result of
the numerous modifications that took place over
the centuries, partially altering its original Gothic
form. Off the right aisle of the nave is the Chapel
of St. Januarius (Capella di San Gennaro), that also
functions as the cathedral treasury (Tesoro) and

GALLERIA UMBERTO I - A mammoth steel and glass
masterpiece built on the site of an entire block
that was razed to the ground following the cholera
epidemic of 1884. The Galleria was built as part of
a program of renovation and modernization of
the city which began with the Unification of Italy
when a tender was put out. The winning project
envisaged four large buildings joined to each other
by an arcade designed by the engineer Paolo
Boubée. Measuring 15 metres in width and 57
metres in height, the galleria was built between
1887 and 1890 and is a wonderful late Victorian
marriage of technology with art. The Galleria has
four access points: via San Carlo, via Santa Brigida,
via Giuseppe Verdi and via Toledo.
JOAN MIRÒ AND THE SURREALISTS
An interesting exhibition on the visual expression of the heterogeneous group of artists who
were influenced by the Manifesto of the Surrealist movement published by André Breton in
1924 who stated that Mirò was “the most Surrealist of all”. Comprising 60 works, the exhibition
focuses primarily on the work of Joan Mirò with a display of 34 of his best-known paintings
featured alongside the artworks of the other most important members of the Surrealist group
including Giorgio de Chirico, Salvador Dalí, André Masson, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Hans
Bellmer, Roberto Sebastián Matta and Wifredo Lam.

ORTO BOTANICO - Founded in 1807 with a decree
signed by King Joseph Bonaparte, Napoleon’s

REAL ALBERGO DEI POVERI - One of the largest,
most imposing buildings in Europe it was designed
by architect Ferdinando Fuga in 1751, at the
behest of King Charles III of the House of Bourbon.
Originally designed to be 600 metres long with
five courtyards and a church in the centre, due to
a severe lack of funds, only the three innermost
courtyards were built. Plans to complete the

establishment was founded in 1224 with the
specific aim of training administrative and skilled
bureaucratic professionals for the curia regis (the

VILLA COMUNALE - Its gardens run parallel to the
sea in via Caracciolo on reclaimed land featuring
almost one kilometre of holm oaks, palm trees,

CERTOSA DI SAN MARTINO - Lying atop a hill
in the Vomero district, the former monastery
dominates the entire Gulf of Naples. Founded in
1325 by Charles of Anjou, Duke of Calabria, over
the centuries the Charter House was enriched by a
number of impressive artefacts including marbles,
frescoes, sculptures, furnishings and paintings.
A national monument since 1866, it houses the
National Museum of San Martino, featuring a large
display of “presepi” or nativity scenes by masters of
