NEW YORK — Ah, the zapper. That little TV remote
control you hold in your hand is a powerful tool for freedom from the tyranny of commercials - but only ifyou
know how to how to use it.
- You've got to know how to graze:
"Grazing," as it's called by wet-palmed Madison
Avenue types and white-lipped network programmers,
is the use of the zapper to flick rapidly from channel to
channel. On multichannel cable TV systems, it's almost
irresistible. "It's a dangerous weapon. It should be used
carefully and, I think, with discretion," said Donny
Deutsch, creative director for Deutsch Inc., a smaller,
Hipper New York City ad agency. He is kidding.
"It gives the viewer more choices, forcing advertis^
ers and TV shows to make every second count,"
Deutsch said. "Some people, regardless of what you put
on, watch TV that way."
Deutsch's agency created the "Your mother wears
Nike" commercials for British Knight sneakers and
other offbeat, attention-getting ads. He offers the following tips to help you zap:
• SHOW STARTERS (The Three-Camera Sitcom
Rule): Always start grazing with half-hour sitcoms like
"Cheers," which give you a brief introduction before
the opening credits. After you see what the show is
about, you get three minutes - one for credits, two for
commercials - to see what's on the other channels.
• SHOW STOPPERS (The "thirtysomething" deviation): The one-hour drama breaks for commercials at
20 minutes past the hour, half-past, and 40 minutes after
the hour. The 20- and 40-minute breaks are perfect for
checking the competition, because other kinds of shows
will not be at break. "You're going to get editorial on
pretty much the rest of the dial," Deutsch notes.
• THE TBS SHIFT: Cable TV's Turner Broadcast;ing System network is the only one that starts and ends
its shows at 5 minutes past the hour and half-hour - a
key time advantage for people either watching TBS or
checking it out.
- "I think they wanted to somehow to separate themselves from the pack and give people who are roaming
a chance to check them out," Deutsch said. "I think it's
been a helpful format for them."
• THE EVERY OTHER BREAK RULE: The first
commercial break on a show is usually about 2 minutes,
but the second break usually is about twice as long.
That alternating pattern continues through most shows,
especially the longer ones, like movies.
"That's where you've got that real grazing time, to
leisurely go through 30 stations," Deutsch said. "It's no
