EDEN 2007 JOINING INSTRUCTIONS HOW TO REACH THE CONFERENCE VENUE The Cumana Railway (S.E.P.S.A. Bagnoli) http://orari.sepsa.it/ Distance: Km 3 – Time: 10 minutes. The"Cumana" line, started in 1889, runs along a part of coast linking up the Montesanto Quarter (in the city centre of Naples) with Torregaveta (on the sea) that is in the municipal district of Bacoli; it calls at the main spots of the city as Corso Vittorio Emanuele, Fuorigrotta and Bagnoli). If you use the Cumana line, you can get off at the Bagnoli stop and, from there, walk until “piazzetta Bagnoli” (then use he bus C9 or C10-Via Coroglio direction); otherwise, walk along Via Coroglio until Città della Scienza (about 1 km) enjoying the seasight and the traces of industrial archaeology of "Italsider". The Conference Venue Centro Congressi (Congress Centre) Citta' della Scienza Via Coroglio 57/D, Napoli, ITALY Location Citta della Scienza is located in the outskirts of Naples, it is situated in the west of the town on the coast between Posillipo hill and the Gulf of Pozzuoli, inside an exindustrial area of Naples. Taxis are available from outside the Arrivals area. It takes approximately 30 minutes to the city centre. Prices are between 10-15 Euros. Extra charge is to be expected for big pieces of luggage and in the night. From Piazzale Tecchio (Campi Flegrei Station) C10 – Main stops route: Via Diocleziano, Via Cavalleggeri d’Aosta, via Cattolica, Via Coroglio (Città della Scienza) From piazzetta Bagnoli C9 Main stops route: Via Coroglio (Città della Scienza) ANM buses run to Napoli Centrale railway station, arriving at the port of Naples (Piazza Municipio). The 3S ANM public bus leaves the airport approximately every 10 minutes and stops at Piazza Garibaldi (the Central Railway Station). The journey takes approximately 15 minutes and a ticket costs 77 cents. C10 Main stops route: Via Coroglio (Città della Scienza) From Cavalleggeri d’Aosta (subway Station) F9 Main stops route: Cavalleggeri d’Aosta, piazza Neghelli, via Cattolica, Via Coroglio-until the end of Discesa Coroglio, in front of Nisida Isle). Alibus shuttle buses also run to Napoli Centrale railway station (Piazza Garibaldi) and then to Piazza Municipio in the centre of Naples. It pendles between the airport and the city centre every 30 minutes, from 06:30 and 23:30. The journey takes approx. 15 minutes. Tickets cost 3 Euros and are valid for 90 minutes for use on the entire local public transport system. C10 – Main stops route: Via Cavalleggeri d’Aosta, via Cattolica, Via Coroglio (Città della Scienza) From piazza Municipio Catch a bus toward Piazza Vittoria; there, the bus C10 until Città della Scienza HRG Bus Shuttle to the Conference By train and metro Delegates who booked a shuttle service via the HRG Travel Agency will receive assistance from the representative of the Travel Agency. Railway and Subway Stations: Napoli Stazione Centrale – Central Railway Station, Campi Flegrei, Cavalleggeri d'Aosta, http://www.metronapoli.it Distance: Km 3 – Time: 10 minutes. Public transport Public transport in Naples consist of buses, trams, metro and four funicular railways. The “Giranapoli” ticket gives you the opportunity to travel around the city using all four means of transport. The ticket is divided into various categories. Hourly ticket which is valid for 90 min and costs € 0,77, Daily ticket: € 2,32; Monthly: € 23,24. The “Unicocampania” ticket gives you the opportunity not only to travel around the city but also around the Campania region. Prices depend on which of the 11 zones (comuni) you want to travel to. The tickets are divided into hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, annual and student annual. To get to Citta’ della Scienza from Piazza Garibaldi, (the Railway Station-Stazione Napoli Centrale), you can catch the Metro for Campi Flegrei Station (Pozzuoli direction). At Campi Flegrei Metro Station, take the bus C10 to Citta della Scienza (Main stops route: Via Coroglio (Città della Scienza). The Gianturco-Pozzuoli metro line is 16 km long and passes eleven subway stations; four of them are used from long distance trains (Piazza Garibaldi, Mergellina, Campi Flegrei and Pozzuoli). To reach Città della Scienza, you can get off at Campi Flegrei and then catch the bus C10. The metro in Naples consist of two lines (Linea 1 and Linea 2). Line 1 goes within the centre of the city and Line 2 connects the centre with the perifery of Naples. Prices are the same as above. Or you can chose to get off at Cavalleggeri Aosta: in this case, you have to catch the bus C10 which will take you at Città della Scienza entry; or the number F9 but, this time, mind you to get off a bus at the end of Discesa Coroglio (Coroglio descent), where Via Coroglio begins (in front of Nisida Isle) and walk 200 metres along the sea until Città della Scienza. 1 Opening Hours PRACTICAL INFORMATION Shops in Naples are generally opened from 9.00am until 1.00pm and from 3.30pm until 7.30pm from Monday to Saturday. Most still remained closed on Sundays although this is beginning to change. Registration The registration desk will be located in the Galleria of the Citta della Scienza Centro Congressi (Congress Centre) . The registration desk will open on Wednesday 13 June at 16.00h. Delegates are advised to register and pick up their Conference Folder before the Welcome Cocktail. Museums are open from 9.00am until 7.00pm, some close between 1.00pm and 3.00pm and all are shut on Sunday and Monday. Registration desk service hours: Wednesday June 13th from 16.00 to 19.00 Thursday June 14th from 9.00 to 17.00 Friday June 15th from 9.00 to 17.00 Banks are generally open from Monday to Friday between 8.35am and 1.35pm and again from 3.00pm to 4.00pm. Tax The Welcome Cocktail There is a value added tax included in the price of all goods in Italy but the good news is that for all non EU residents, this is something which you can get back after you leave the country. This rebate only applies, however, if the item purchased cost more than €155. If this is the case, you need to fill in a form in the shop where you buy the item, have it stamped at customs and return it to the shop within sixty days. Following this your refund will be issued by cheque or to your credit card. At major airports and border crossings there are facilities which will provide you with an immediate cash refund. Wednesday 13 June, the Welcome Cocktail will take place at 19.00h. Wine, refreshments and delicious snacks will be served in the friendly open air Piazza Verde of Città della Scienza. Currency Exchange The currency in Italy is Euro. For all currency exchange, banks are generally the most reliable and offer the best rates. There are also exchange offices at all major airports and train stations whose opening hours are usually more convenient but the commission is more expensive. Insurance / Liability Neither the organizer nor the congress office can be held liable for loss, injury or damage to any person or property or for any additional expenditure incurred due to changes, whatever the causes. Participants are advised to make their own arrangements for health and travel insurance. Electricity Electricity in Italy is 220V, 50 Hz but in some places including Naples, 125V is still used. Plug-ins are Italian plug-ins, thus, a converter is recommended. Name Badges All participants, excluding accompanying persons, receive name badges at the registration desk and are kindly asked to wear their name badge for admission to the official scientific programme and social programme. Telephones Lunch / Coffee Breaks If you wish to call abroad from Naples again you dial 00, followed by the international calling code for the country you are calling, the area code (without the 0) and then the local number. It is worth noting that you also need to drop the first zero from the local area code for both types of call. To call Naples from abroad you first dial 00, followed by 39 which is the country code for Italy, the local area code 081 (dropping the 0) and the local number. Lunch and coffee are included in the registration fee for all registered participants. Lunches are served only for registered delegates. Climate In summer it gets very hot and humid with temperatures remaining in the thirties for days on end. These high temperatures begin in May and can last until as late as September or October. The conference venue is air conditioned. Tipping While a service charge of between 15% and 18% is included in all restaurant bills, it is customary to leave a small tip if the service merits it. Between 5% and 10% of the total is sufficient. If you are in a café or a bar where the service charge is not included you should tip between 10% and 15%. Taxi drivers are usually given 10% of the fare and tour guides and drivers should be given about 15% of the total cost of the tour price. Time Zone Naples is located in the Central European Time (CET) zone which is one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time and six ahead of Eastern Standard Time. 2 Banking Services Museums in Naples Banks in Italy offer a full range of services. There are many 24-hour cash points (ATMs) available. Each bank has its own opening hours. These are displayed on the door. The general opening times are from Monday through Friday from 8:30 to 13:30 and for 60 to 90 minutes between 14:30 and 16:00. Not all services are available in the afternoon. Banks are usually not open on Saturday mornings. There are several national banks (e.g. Banca Nazionale del Lavoro, Banca Commcericale Italiana, San Paolo IMI). Some local banks (e.g. Banca di Roma, Banco di Napoli, Banco di Sicilia) also have several branches throughout the country.Emergency situations Gastronomy Naples is the home of pizza, sold on the streets along with a dazzling array of other goodies. Calzone (stuffed pizza), potato croquettes, rich balls and courgette flowers in batter are just some of the street fare. Meat plays a much smaller part, with seafood and vegetables king, and clams, squid and octopus feature large on menus. Neopolitans are very good at pastries. Good white wines such as Biancolella and Greco di Tufo, or Taurasi red. Eat in the Mergellina district (quayside), but Naples is full of good, traditional and cheap restaurants. Pharmacists (farmacia) are qualified to give advice on minor ailments and to dispense prescriptions. There will always be a 24-hour one 'on turn'. Services available in the Conference Venue: Shopping There is wireless internet in the venue of the conference. Please note that due to missing firewall protection, using the wireless internet may not be safe. Via Toledo (main shopping street), Forcella open air market, Porta Nolana fish market. A Bank with cash point is located inside Città della Scienza: Monday to Friday 09:00 - 13:15. Safety Instructions It is advisable to leave your passport and valuables in your hotel safe and carry a photocopy of your passport with you. Although Naples has a reputation for crime and petty theft is rife and tourists are targeted, by using common sense, you will be able to avoid risks. If you trust local advice for areas of the city to avoid and if you keep an eye out for bag-snatchers and pickpockets, you will enjoy your stay. We wish you a pleasant journey.
