When someone dies, a relationship is lost, a process of change begins and we move towards a new and largely unknown situation. Cruse Bereavement Care in Northern Ireland can provide support to assist individuals to move through this period of change. Services available in Northern Ireland include: • Free leaflets available from local offices or the Cruse Regional Office • Individual face-to-face Bereavement Support & Counselling from a Bereavement Volunteer • Support in a bereavement group • National Helpline 0844 477 9400 and email helpline@cruse.org.uk • On-line access to information at www.cruse.org.uk • Advice, support and information for parents and carers supporting bereaved children and young people Facts about Cruse • Cruse in Northern Ireland has been providing bereavement support in the community since 1984. • Cruse is a national charity which exists to promote the well-being of bereaved people, and to enable anyone bereaved by death to understand their grief and cope with their loss. • Cruse services are provided free of charge and are dependent on the generosity of the local community and statutory support to deliver the service. • Cruse services are based on volunteers in local communities supporting bereaved individuals in their communities. How can Cruse help? Cruse provides a range of services to help people to cope with the changes that bereavement may create in their lives. Volunteering for Cruse • Face to face bereavement support for children aged 4-18 in the majority of Cruse area/branches in Northern Ireland • For young people, a Freephone Helpline: 0808 808 1677 and on-line access to information and support at www.rd4u.org.uk and email info@rd4u.org.uk • For bereaved parents, the Remember Our Child service provides information and support following the loss of a child, Tel: 028 9079 7975 email: rememberourchild@cruse.org.uk • Providing support in Northern Ireland’s prisons. What can I do for Cruse? • You can help run a local service by getting involved in fundraising activities, organising publicity, administration, or being part of a management committee. • You can directly support bereaved people on a one to one basis, facilitate bereavement groups and provide volunteer supervision and training. Who can volunteer for Cruse? • Anyone can apply to be a volunteer for Cruse. You do not need to have any qualifications or previous experience for all of the opportunities, but you do need to care about bereaved people and have time to offer. You will be given all the preparation, training and support you need. We welcome men and women of all ages, races, cultures and backgrounds. What is the reward for volunteers? • Your expenses will be paid and you are likely to gain enormous satisfaction from knowing you are making a positive difference to someone’s life. You can also benefit from the opportunity to complete an externally accredited course and ongoing personal development. Every hour of time given by a volunteer helps a child or adult face the future knowing that they are not alone.
