How to find Modes
By Rail
Derby is 1 hr 40 minutes by rail from London and 40 minutes from Birmingham.
Buses from the Railway Station:
Bus no.6 (University term-time)
During University terms take the No 6 ‘Uni bus’ – this leaves from the bay outside the
station in front of the taxi rank. Take this bus to The Wardwick opposite the Library (about
5 minutes).
At the crossroads opposite St Werburgh’s Church turn left and walk down Curzon Street. At
the traffic lights/junction cross over to the pavement where the flower bed is on the corner
near the Housing Association properties. Continue down the left hand side of Curzon Street.
At the white building on the corner turn left down Forman Street to the VoiceBox.
Training takes place in the Archer Gallery in the main building. The walk takes about 10
minutes. (The MUA office is located up the flight of stairs in the courtyard).
At other times cross the road outside the station and turn right. The bus stop is in front of
the Waterfall bar, on the corner of Midland Place. These buses will only take you to the City
Centre.
Buses 31A/44 or 45
Take the No 31A to Victoria Street or the No 44 / 45 to the Morledge. From the Morledge,
walk up East Street (Millets on corner), turn right opposite St Peter’s Church, down into St
Peters Street, and left into Victoria Street. From Victoria Street walk past Burtons and
Boots and along the Wardwick past the Central Library. From the corner of Curzon Street
opposite St Werburgh’s Church follow the underlined instructions as above.
For your return to the station you will need to walk to the Bus Station on the Morledge. Ask
staff for directions. The walk will take 15 minutes and it may be quicker to walk directly to
the station or, if you have luggage, to order a taxi.
On foot from the Railway Station via the shops (40 mins)
Turn left outside the station and walk along Midland Road. Turn right at the traffic lights
and walk down London Road, ensuring you are on the opposite side to the London Road
Community Hospital. After the roundabout crossing continue straight on down London
Road keeping the Westfield shopping centre on your right, past Wilkinson and Argos. Carry
straight on down the hill, down St Peter’s Street, past St Peter’s Church. At the very bottom
of the hill near HSBC bank and Burtons turn left into Victoria Street. Continue past Boots,
straight on into The Wardwick, passing the Museum and Art Gallery. Follow the instructions
from Curzon Street as above (underlined).
On foot from the Railway Station via the Inner Ring Road (25 mins)
Turn left outside the station and walk along Midland Road. Turn right at the traffic lights
and walk down London Road, ensuring you are on the same side as the London Road
Community Hospital. At the roundabout turn left up the hill (Bradshaw Way) past Matalan

on the right. At the next roundabout (Osmaston Park Road Roundabout) go straight on
along Lara Croft Way. At the Islamic Centre use the pelican crossing to cross to the right side
of the dual carriage – continue along the inner ring road. At the Burton Road roundabout
go straight across and proceed down Mercian Way (passing the commemoration plaque).
You will go past three sets of traffic lights/pelican crossings; just before the third there is a
path on the right crossing open ground next to a car park “Abbey Street” take this path and
go to the row of factory buildings which are on Forman Street (YMCA is the first). The
VoiceBox courtyard is located at the end of this row. Our events are held in one of the
downstairs rooms; if you have an office appointment please use the external stone staircase.

By Car
Parking: The nearest car park (Abbey Street) is 100m away from the VoiceBox. It is a Pay and
Display car park costing £7.00 per day (exact change – coins only). It is only accessible from
Abbey Street (turn left then right out of Forman Street)
From the A50 or A38 south (and A516)
Leave the A50 at the A38 (Toyota car plant) junction. Take the slip road signed M1 South,
Nottingham, Derby A516. At the slip road roundabout continue on the A516 towards the city
centre, passing the hospital. Cross over the outer ring road (A5111) at the traffic lights and
continue towards the city (thro’ another set of lights). At the next roundabout “Uttoxeter
New Road Roundabout” (adjacent to a bright yellow derelict building) take the third exit
(one one before the IRR and A514). Then take the second right into Forman Street. The
VoiceBox is on your right. To park continue along the street turn left and then at the junction
opposite the RSCPA turn right on to Abbey Street where 2 car parks are situated (details
above)

From the North (M1 and A38)
Exit M1 at J28. Follow the A38 south-west towards Derby. Pass the exits for A61 and A6,
then take the exit for A52 Derby. At the roundabout turn left for the City Centre, into
Ashbourne Road. Continue down Ashbourne Road. When you reach traffic lights near the
top of a Georgian street called Friar Gate you enter the one-way system. Bear left, then
right into a two lane road called Agard Street. Take the right hand lane and continue to the
traffic lights. At this t-junction (opposite Friar Gate Studios), bear right following signs for
Inner Ring Road, moving into the left lane and proceeding to another set of traffic lights
about 30m away (Ford Street/Friar Gate). Go straight on over these lights (Stafford Street)
with large office blocks on left. At the next roundabout “Uttoxeter New Road Roundabout”
take the first left into Curzon Street, then take the second right into Forman Street. The
VoiceBox is on your right. To park continue along the street, turn left and then at the
junction opposite the RSCPA turn right on to Abbey Street where 2 car parks are situated
(details above).
From the A52 Nottingham/M1
Follow the A52 west towards Derby. At the Pentagon traffic island carry straight on,
following signs for A52 Ashbourne. Continue along St Alkmund's Way, then Ford Street
(just past Friar Gate Studios), until you reach the traffic lights at the junction with Friar
Gate, where the A52 turns off to the right – by this point you should be in the left hand
lane. Go straight on over these lights (on Stafford Street), with large office blocks on left. At
the next roundabout “Uttoxeter New Road Roundabout” take the first left into Curzon
Street, and then the second right into Forman Street. The VoiceBox is on your right. . To
park continue along the street, turn left and then at the junction opposite the RSCPA turn
right on to Abbey Street where 2 car parks are situated (details above).
From the A52 Ashbourne
Cross over the A38 junction and head towards the City Centre on Ashbourne Road. When
you reach traffic lights near the top of a Georgian street called Friar Gate you enter the oneway system a. Bear left then right into a two lane road called Agard Street. Take the right
hand lane and continue to the traffic lights. At this t-junction (opposite Friar Gate Studios),
turn right following signs for Inner Ring Road, moving into the left lane and proceeding to
another set of traffic lights about 30m away (Ford Street/Friar Gate). Go straight on over
these lights keeping in the left hand lane (Stafford Street), with large office blocks on left.
At the next roundabout “Uttoxeter New Road Roundabout” take the first left into Curzon
Street, and then the second right into Forman Street. The VoiceBox is on your right. To park
continue along the street, turn left and then at the junction opposite the RSCPA turn right
on to Abbey Street where 2 car parks are situated (details above).
From A6 south
Continue towards the city centre, passing Station Road (to the rail station) on your right,
and then London Road Community Hospital on your left. At the roundabout turn left onto
Bradshaw Way. Go up the hill to Osmaston Park Road Roundabout and go straight across
(Lara Croft Way), passing the Islamic Centre. Continue to Burton Road Roundabout and
then continue straight on down Mercian Way. At Uttoxeter New Road Roundabout take
the fourth exit marked Abbey Street and Laurie House Parking (Curzon Street). Take the
second right into Forman Street. The VoiceBox is on your right. To park continue along the
street, turn left and then at the junction opposite the RSCPA turn right on to Abbey Street
where 2 car parks are situated (details above).
