Getting Started with Ark  Monogram Std
FOR OPENTYPE FONTS
Install your Ark Monogram OpenType Std Font Family— Ark Monogram Center, Ark Monogram Left, Ark Monogram
Right, and Ark Oval Frames. Perform this installation in the usual manner on your Macintosh or Windows computer.
Your font menu should look something like this:

By using programs that allow you to freely position and align type like Adobe InDesign or Quark Express,
you can precisely position each letter. Start by combining center 1 , left 2 , and right 3 typestyles.
Now place your work on top of an oval frame 4 . Step-by-step directions are on the next page.

How to Make a Monogram

1 Start with all capital letters using Ark Monogram Center from the font menu.
Step 2 Change the first letter “A” to an Ark Monogram Left letter.
Step 3 Change the end letter “K” to an Ark Monogram Right letter.

Ready— Your monogram is now ready to place in an oval.
Make a separate oval
Place the oval behind the monogram
Change black type to white type
Add fill colors if you wish

Step
4 Make a separate placeholder for your new oval. Now select an Ark Oval Frame from the font menu. A
complete list of ovals with access keys is located in the next section. You may also want to use the Apple Character
Palette to help you in your selection of ovals.
Step
5 & 6 Make sure your oval is placed behind the monogram. Turn the finished ARK monogram letters you
previously made to white type (reverse) and move them to the center of the oval. Add fill colors if you wish.
Finished—Voilà! You now have a finished monogram in an oval.

Page-Layout Programs and Oval Frames
Almost all major Macintosh and Windows page-layout programs will now allow you to freely position and align type behind
type. You can precisely place your monogram in an oval frame with:
• Adobe InDesign
• Quark XPress
• Adobe Illustrator
• Corel Draw and MS Publisher
• The Print Shop for Macintosh & Windows
• and many others
N OTE
If you are unsure, you may want check to see if your software has a type-on-a-path tool that allows for positioning before
purchasing the Ark Monogram Set.
Some bare-bones word-processors, such as TextEdit (Mac) and MSWordPad (Win), are too limited to align the oval frame.
Making Monograms with Mac MS Word 2004 OSX & Later
Open a new blank document in Word and type in your three-letter monogram using Ark Monogram Center. Then replace the
first letter with Ark Monogram Left and the last letter with Ark Monogram Right. Fonts with easier to read names are found
at Font under the Format menu:

Type in your Ark Oval Frame selection, then highlight that character. A complete list of ovals with access keys is located in

Go to the Format menu at the top, then to Insert Text Box. The Oval should now be a movable object in your document:

Next, double-click on the edge of the Text Box to go to Format Text Box. In the Colors and Lines heading select a Line Color of
No Line. You may want to make other adjustments while you’re in here:

Now go to the Layout heading in the same Format Text Box. Choose Behind Text to send the oval frame behind the
three-letter monogram:

You should be able to drag the oval under the monogram now as shown in the left image below. Please be aware if you select a
black oval you will need to change the color of the text to white. You can make this change by going to the Format menu and
selecting Font then Font color as shown here

If you are unable to precisely align to your satisfaction, then select the three-letter monogram again. Go to the Format menu
and select Paragraph. Choose the Indents and Spacing heading and adjust Indentation and Spacing to accurately align the
three-letter monogram within the oval frame. You may want to check alignment with the Zoom feature.
