A Moldmaking How-to Guide: Steps in Creating a One Part Mold View our complete Moldmaking series at www.quantumsilicones.com. Creating a One Part Mold Hot glue can be used to secure the model to the base and in the center of the mold frame. Apply mold release to the model and inside the mold frame. Allow specified time to dry. Applying more than one coat of mold release is recommended. Step 1 Pour and weigh part “A” (base) in an appropriate container on a scale. Step 2 Tare or zero the scale and weigh proper mix ratio of part “B” (catalyst) into the same container. Creating a One Part Mold (continued) Using a clean stainless steel spatula, or clean wooden stir stick, mix material until it is uniform in color and minimal color striations are visible. Slowly mix the material in a folding motion to ensure minimal air entrapment. Step 3 Step 4 If necessary, once material is sufficiently mixed, using a vacuum pump with a desiccator or vacuum chamber is recommended to evacuate air that has been incorporated during the mixing process. As air is removed from the liquid rubber, the volume will temporarily rise and expand about three times its original volume. Step 5 Pour the mixed silicone until reaching the top of the mold frame. Allow material to fully cure. Most moldmaking products should cure overnight (about 16 hours) to achieve best results. Creating a One Part Mold (continued) Step 6 1 2 Remove all sides of the frame. Gently remove the master model from the mold. Clean the mold as needed. 3 4 Creating a One Part Mold (continued) Step 7 Prepare your casting resin as specified. Pour a small portion of the casting resin onto the outside of the mold to ensure inihibition does not occur. Moldmaking Silicones by QSi Whether you are casting polyurethane foam, polyurethane resin, polyester, gypsum, stones, or low melt alloys like bronze, you can rely on QSi’s moldmaking silicones to consistently produce replicas. QSi’s moldmaking materials have many key features that all play an important role in the molding and duplicating process including: Moldmaking Applications: - Architectural - Candles & Soap • Low and high viscosities - Dental - Food Contact • A wide range of durometers - Prosthetics • Various demold times - Prototyping • Translucent grades available that allow pigment to be added - Sculpture & Figurine - Special Effects • High temperature resistance materials up to 225C • Low shrinkage materials designed for highly complex and intricate parts • Materials for indirect food contact applications compliant with FDA standards • Room temperature and heat accelerated curing capabilities • Liquid additives and multiple catalyst options for condensation (tin) curing silicones are available to obtain your desired physical properties or cure speeds.
