How to Install an Aftermarket Reversing Camera
How to Install an Aftermarket Reversing Camera First get a Reversing Camera, eBay is a good starting point as you should be able to get a reasonable camera for not a lot of money. Just check it has similar specs as these below: • • • • • Video system: Resolution: Min illumination: Video output: Power supply: PAL and/or NTSC 420 TV lines 0Lux/ F1.2 (with IR) RCA connector, 1.0Vp-p, 75ohm DC 12V Then you will need a ‘Video In Adaptor’ cable which will allow you to connect your camera to the Navigation Unit in the glove box like this one below. You can make one yourself from the ‘How To’s’ on Civinfo or order one from me here: http://www.civinfo.com/forum/civinfo-traders/51028-video-cables-reversingcamera-etc.html Let’s get started….. Step 1 - Video In Cable Installation It is possible to plug the cable into the back of the Navigation system without taking the dash apart, if you are nimble and have patience, by using the following method: 1. Remove the passenger's dashboard undercover by gently pulling down the cover to detach the clips. Pull the cover away to release the hook. 2. Lay on your back in the foot well and reach up behind the dashboard. Carefully feel around and locate the 7 pin socket at the back of the Navigation Unit and push the 7 pin plug in. Tip: If it’s tight, it will be easier if you carefully chamfer the edges of the plug with a file or sharp knife and smear a small amount of WD40 on the flat surfaces of the plug (keeping it away from the connectors). 3. If you manage this, then you have saved your self a lot of time! Go to Step 2, if not, you will have to take the dash apart –Not difficult, just time consuming. Go to Step 9 - Dash board disassembly. I would suggest installing the camera on the same side of the car as the Navigation unit i.e. the passenger side. This will make routing the cable easier. This guide is for a UK RHD model. Open the tailgate and take off the bulb access panel on the side relative to the side you are going to mount your camera. Remove the nuts securing the taillight (be very careful not to drop them into the tailgate as I did! otherwise you will have to take of the tailgate trim panel to retrieve them!) Disconnect the bulb and remove from car. 2. Mount you camera onto the underside of the centre light assembly. I positioned mine here: The under side of the light assembly is flat and smooth, I used the self tapping screws supplied with my camera to fix it to the car, but you could also use a strong glue. If you use screws, ensure they are no longer than 10mm. This will ensure they don’t protrude into the lenses area of the light. 3. Pass the camera cable into the car from the outside. Cut/File a small notch on the edge of the taillight you removed (behind foam seal). This is for the camera cable to go into and allow the light to be flush when it is fitted back onto the car. 4. Put the light unit back onto the car, but before you tighten it, gently pull the camera cable taught so that it fits flush against the underside of the centre light assembly. 5. This is the point you connect the power cable for the camera to the cars reversing lights. How you do this is up to you, you can solder or use Scotch Loc connectors. 6. Some cameras have a short cable (30cm approx.) with connectors on, or others just have a very long cable. If you have a long cable, cut it after about 30cm's after the point it enters the car through the light, there will probably be 3 wires inside (See diagram below). Most cameras will normally have the short cable with a power connector and a How to Install an Aftermarket Reversing Camera (Bog @ www.civinfo.com – v1 Feb 2011) Page 2 of 11 video RCA plug, and a separate very long cable (around 5m) with 2 wires in it. If you have this type of cable, cut one of the RCA plugs off one end as indicated in the diagram below. It is easier to pass the cut cable through the bodywork! Below is a typical camera wiring set (Refer to your cameras instructions if different)… To Navigation Unit Cut here! Inside you will find: Black Wire = Gnd/ Video Gnd (Combined) White or Yellow = +V (Composite video signal) Inside you will find 3 wires: Red Wire = +12v Black Wire = Gnd/ Video Gnd (Combined) White or Yellow = +V (Composite video) Camera +12v Power Connect the red wire (or +12v) to the BROWN +12v wire of the reversing light. Generally you don’t have to Gnd (Ground/Earth) the camera here, as most cameras have a common Video and Power Gnd (i.e. they are joined) and the camera will ground in the Navigation Unit (via the video cable) 7. Tape or cable tie the camera cable to the existing loom to keep it secure. Step 3 -Cable routing/Installation (Interior) Now the easy part first, route your long length of camera cable from the front of the car under the trim panels along the base of the doors where the carpet meets the edge of the car. You can un-clip these or just tuck the cable under as the carpet as it just pushes back. Ensure you leave enough of the end of the cable with the yellow RCA plug on it under the glove box, so that you can connect it to the ‘Video In’ cable later. Tip: Find a length of old, fairly ridged cable such as coax or electrical cable which is about 2m long. 1. Pull the flexible rubber connector away from the tailgate and car body (Careful, it has a cable in it), don’t worry, it's easy to put back after. How to Install an Aftermarket Reversing Camera (Bog @ www.civinfo.com – v1 Feb 2011) Page 3 of 11 2. Open the rear passenger door and pull back the rubber door seal where it runs up next the edge of the back seat. This will expose a 1cm gap where you can see behind the trim panels, especially the white rear quarter trim panel. 3. Using your long old piece of cable, push it down into the hole in the tailgate area exposed by removing the flexible rubber connector and push it gently down until it appears in the gap created by pulling back the rubber door seal. Be patient, it may take a few attempts to get it through. 4. Now tape (Use electrical insulating tape) the cut end of your long camera cable to the end of your piece of cable you pushed through from the tailgate area and is now sticking out near the rear seat. Now gently pull you old piece of cable back out pulling your camera cable through behind the trim panels and out of the top hole. Remove your old piece of cable. 5. Replace the rubber door seal, carefully hiding the camera cable behind it and the trim panels. 6. Now pass your camera cable through the rubber flexible joint. Tip: Use a piece of wire like an old coat hanger taped to your cable to pull it through, WD40 or washing liquid will also help. Step 4 - Tailgate Cable Installation Now you need to feed the cable into the tailgate. Again, this is not to difficult and no need to remove trim panels. 1. Using your old piece of cable, gently push it into the hole on the tailgate exposed by removing the rubber connector and push it through the side of the tailgate towards the rear light opening. It should appear in near the lights or pop out under the side trim of the tailgate. 2. Again, tape the end of your long camera cable to the end your piece of cable you pushed through the tailgate and is now sticking out near the lights.... Now gently pull your old piece of cable back out pulling your camera cable through the tailgate and out into the light area. 3. Re-join the Gnd (Black) and Video+ (Yellow or White) wires where you cut it. I suggest soldering for a better connection. Obviously, if you have the type of camera which has short cable coming from it and a long extension cable, this process is much easer. Check all cables are secure and insulated, and replace trim cover. If you managed to fit the ‘Video In’ cable using Step 1, go to Step 12! Take care not to scratch the front seat, dashboard, and related parts. 2. Open the centre pocket lid. 3. Gently pull out on the front edge of the console panel to detach the clips. Pull the centre console panel up and forward to release the tabs. (You don’t have to remove this as the centre console will come out without removing it, just be careful not to scratch the gear lever)…. Pull the glove box (A) back by hand to detach the clips, and disconnect the glove box light bulb socket (B), then remove the glove box. 9. Install the glove box in the reverse order of removal, and note these items: Make sure the light bulb socket is plugged in properly and push the clips into place securely. Step 10 - Navigation Unit Removal/Installation 1. Remove the nuts and bolt, and wire harness clips then pull out the navigation unit or gently rotate it around to expose rear connectors. Install the navigation unit in the reverse order of removal. If the navigation unit is disconnected, a map match must be done. Step 11 - Video In Cable Installation 1. Push the white 7 pin plug into the green (or grey on some later models) 7 pin socket at the rear of the Navigation Unit. Ensure the other end of the plug is free to drop down behind and is accessible once you have put the dash back together. I would suggest using a cable tie to fix your new cable securely to an adjacent cable going into the Navigation Unit, so there is not chance of it pulling out! Before you put your dash back together (In the reverse order of removal), test your camera –Got to Step 12 How to Install an Aftermarket Reversing Camera (Bog @ www.civinfo.com – v1 Feb 2011) Page 10 of 11 Step 12 – Check you camera works! 1. Plug your ‘video in’ cable into the RCA connector (Normally Yellow) of your camera cable you have just routed through the car. From Navigation System (If you have ordered one of my cables, the colour may be different. To Reversing Camera 2. If your camera has a male connector, then you will need a male to male couplet like this (Approx £2 from Maplin)…. 3. Start your car, engage reverse and your Navigation Display should switch over and display the image from your camera! Tip: You can adjust the brightness in both Day and Night modes by turning the Jog Dial. 4. Put everything back together (Rubber seals, flexible joint etc,) - Job done! NB. If the display just turns black, this means there is no video signal, so double check all of you connections and especially soldered joints or it could be that your camera is faulty. You can check by connecting another composite video source to your ‘Video In’ cable such as a portable DVD player or Digital camera.
