Procedure
1
OBJECTIVES
This document provides a procedure on how to create RX commands to remotely control another
device using RS-232 communication.
2
SCOPE
This document is applicable on GE8 DISplayers with RT OS software. It can also be applied on
GE10 DISplayers with Linux OS –or GE8 DISplayers with Linux OS- however it is advised to make
use of the remote control options over TCP/IP which is available in the Linux application.

CREATING THE COMMANDS
3.1
REQUIRED TOOLS AND DOCUMENTS
To create the required files, you will need the dZSerialDeviceApiGenerator.exe tool which is
available
for
download
at
http://www.dzinefiles.org/support/software/Tools/dZSerialDeviceApiGenerator.zip. In case this
URL is not available, please contact support at dzine.support@barco.com.
Download and extract the tool (no passwords required) to you
dZSerialDeviceApiGenerator.exe by double clicking the program thumbnail.
workstation.
Run
Next to this tool, you will also need the (technical) user manual of the device you want to address
to be able to track down all required commands and protocol information.
3.2
INITIALIZATION FILE
To initialize the RS-232 communication between the DISplayer and your device, an initialization
file needs to be created using the dZSerialDeviceAPIGenerator.exe tool.
For the exact values to be used, please refer to the user manual of your device. For this example,
we will use a device which requires following details:
Protocol
Baud rate
Data length
Parity bit
Stop bit
RS-232
9600 bps
8 bits
None
1 bit

Procedure
Now open the dZSerialDeviceAPIGenerator tool and fill in the input fields accordingly:
Click Save As… and save this file as init.gt2. Later on we will upload this file to the GT\Pages
directory on your DISplayer.
3.3
RX COMMANDS
Each operation you want to perform on your device using RS-232 communication, needs to be
created as a RX command. This is also done with the dZSerialDeviceApiGenerator tool. A set of
commands will be available in the user manual of your device. For this example, we’ll use this set
of available commands:

Procedure
If you want to create a command to power on your device, open the dZSerialDeviceApiGenerator,
define the data size on the right and type one of above commands on the ‘00’ reserved bits.
Given the above example the power on command counts 21 bits. So the Data size will be 21 bits.
Click Save or Save As and save the file as an .RX file.
4
USING THE COMMANDS
4.1
UPLOAD THE INITIALIZATION FILE
Browse your desktop for the init.gt2 you’ve created in chapter 3.2 and drag and drop it in IDS
Server onto your DISplayers hard disk > storage > gt > pages.

Procedure
4.2
ENABLE THE INITIALIZATION FILE ON THE DISPLAYER
Plugin a USB keyboard and mouse into your DISplayer3 and hit F11 to open the menu. On the
Settings > Auto Content page, fill in the name of the uploaded initialization file (init.gt2) in the
Initialization Source File input box.
Click OK to apply your changes
4.3
SENDING THE COMMANDS
When a physical connection between DISplayer and device has been made, you can execute the
created commands by sending or scheduling the RX commands (Chapter 3.3) to the DISplayer
using IDS Server UI.
