How to log onto the RUH Computer system for the... your Smart Card
How to log onto the RUH Computer system for the first time with
your Smart Card
So you have just received you brand new and shiny smart card, but now you are wondering
how to log in with it? This quick guide will teach you how!
1 - The first step
Initially, you will need three things:
1. The Smart Card
2. The PIN number
3. A computer with either, A keyboard with a smart card slot or a USB smartcard reader
(slot or ‘plate’)
Once you have these items to hand, we can begin. If you are using Windows XP (the older
looking one) please go to 2A, if you are using Windows 7 please skip to 2B.
2A – Windows XP
With Windows XP all you will need to do is insert the Smart Card into the slot of choice while
on the main log in page (where you normally put in your name and password). A box prompt
will appear and ask you to put in your PIN number. Enter the 4 digit PIN number into that
box.

Press ‘YES’ on this option. It will now ask for your normal username and password (the one
you use to log into the pc/the internet). Enter this into the boxes and press ok. Your Smart
Card is now ready to use!
The Smart Card will start saving passwords for a variety of websites (including but not
limited to, NHS email, ICE and Requests).

How to reset your own login passwords
Now you have your lovely Smart Card all enrolled and working, we can move onto the next
step: How to reset your own network password.
Rather than phoning the service desk to reset you, you can now do it yourself quickly and
easily. When logging in there will be an option to set yourself some security questions for the
self-reset:
Once you have filled out the questions, it will save and next time you need to answer them
you will be able to self-reset your password.

the plate, or that it is fully inserted into the slot.
While on the slot, bear in mind that it’s ‘Chip down, photo facing you’.
If you have had your password reset, make sure you log in with your
