What’s
Happening in
Myanmar and Why
Don’t We Call It Burma Anymore?
Instructor: Art Echerd, Upper School
Social Science
For almost fifty years, Myanmar
has been one of the world’s most
isolated countries. Its political and
economic isolation, which has been
the deliberate policy of the military
junta that has ruled that nation since
1962, now seems to be coming to an
end. Hillary Clinton’s recent visit to
the country was the first made by an
American Secretary of State in over
half a century, and there are indications that Myanmar’s military regime
is, at last, genuinely intent upon
democratization. This class will look
at the history of Myanmar since 1948
and examine its current situation,
with particular focus upon the crucial

What is the difference between
Ibérico and Serrano ham? What
are tapas? What is the tablao? The
Giralda? Castles, windmills, flamenco dancers, cathedrals from Gothic
to Gaudí, a Moorish palace, a Roman
aqueduct, walled cities, magnificent
beaches, Picasso, Franco, Fernando
and Isabel, the Running of the Bulls
in Pamplona, the pilgrimage on the
Camino de Santiago, Semana Santa
in Sevilla... Dominated for centuries
by the Romans and then the Moors,
home to an empire, the first modern
novel, a forty-year dictatorship and
after that a popular royal family,
Spain emerges from a unique history
into an uncertain economic and
political future in the 21st century.
Deciding what to do and see
in Spain, and getting around to it
all once you get there, can be an
adventure all by itself. During this
virtual tour of some of the major
sites and cities, we will talk about
some of these aspects of Spain’s
past, present and the possibilities for
its future. You will also learn some
basic Spanish phrases to help you
manage when you get off the plane,
check into the hotel, visit a major
site, take the metro or the train, order
your food or purchase cerámicas,
castañas, vino or the best jamón in
the world.

The GOAL of this class is to LEARN
and to have FUN. It will serve as
an introduction to painting with
watercolors. In the first two classes,
easy assignments combined with
instructor demonstrations will help
the inexperienced student learn
some of the basic techniques. In
class three, students will apply their
new skills to a simple still life by
working from life or from instructor-provided photographs. In class
four, we will paint several generic
landscapes quickly and work back
into two of these. In class five, we
will continue to work on the previous week's work, select the best
one, apply a mat, and have a mini
show with refreshments!
**Class size is limited to 15 people each time**
What is your story? We all are containers of hundreds, even thousands
of stories from the lives we have lived
and the people, places, and lives we
have observed or are in our heritage.
It is easy to find our own stories; they
are right there under the surface of
our days. Come explore, find, and
write the memoirs, prose excursions,
or poems that emerge from our exercises in six sessions. Special Note:
Please bring 3 old family photographs
to the first session.

Sugar and Salt Workshops:
How many of you have taken the time
to find the perfect recipes to cook for
a dinner party at your place or to make
a nice meal for your family, only to
have an ingredient list a mile long and
hours of work ahead of you? Cooking
doesn’t have to be so hard! This
class will give you new tools to take
the tedium out of cooking, seeking to
make your time in the kitchen more
spontaneous and resourceful. We
will discuss the principles and logic of
recipes, and how we can change them
to suit our daily needs. By discussing a few basic preparations and food
pairings, we will be able to cook a delicious meal collectively from common
pantry and fridge staples. The simple
strategies you will take away from
this class should provide you with a
refreshed culinary perspective and a
sense of ease in your own kitchen.

Join us for a free screening of Miss
Representation, a film that explores
the under-representation of women
in positions of power and influence in America and challenges the
limited portrayal for powerful women
as encouraged by the mainstream
media. Miss Representation brings
together some of America’s most influential women in politics, news and
entertainment, including Condoleezza
Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric,
Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem to
give audiences an inside look at the
media’s message and depiction of
women. Miss Representation takes
the stand that the media is portraying women’s primary values as their
youth, beauty and sexuality – rather
than their capacity as leaders. With
myriad video clips portraying women
in a highly charged sexual manner,
juxtaposed with women of historical
significance, the viewer becomes
acutely aware of how media plays an
enormous role in how a girl views
herself.

Even when we try to make good
food choices, we might be secretly
sabotaging our health with excess
salt. Salt is essential to keep our
bodies working properly, but too
much salt can cause dehydration,
weight gain, headaches, and might
eventually lead to high blood pressure and heart disease. Join Certified Health Coach Laurel Staples as
she discusses both sides of the salt
story. Learn which foods are the
worst culprits for excess sodium

to modify your diet, and discover
ways to reinvent your relationship
