Stewardship
“The disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.”
Acts 13:52
Because the disciples had heard Our Lord’s call, they were
able to spread the message of the Gospel with strength and
vitality. We, too, can experience that same joy if we take time
to listen to God, to ask for His direction and to allow the Holy
Spirit to guide our lives and our decisions.

This weekend is the fourth Sunday of Easter
and the readings are all about lambs, sheep and
shepherds. The image in the second reading is
one that Catholic Apologist Scott Hahn found
to be life changing. As a bible believing born again evangelical
he had been trained to believe that the Mass was the greatest
sacrilege a Christian could commit. He falsely believed that we
are re-crucifying Jesus Christ. What he found at a small chapel
at Marquette University was anything but. Sitting with his
bible in the back of the chapel at a Catholic Mass he found
himself in the middle of the Book of Revelation. He became so
excited he wanted to shout out “ Do you know where you
are?” The vision is a beautiful one indeed. It is a vision of
heaven-it is a vision of those who have “survived the great
distress.” And in the middle of this vision is “The lamb who is
in the center of the throne (who) will shepherd them and lead
them to springs of life-giving water.” The lamb is Jesus Christ.
What does the priest say as he holds aloft the Eucharist?
“Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the
world.” The priest, laity and all the heavenly host kneel in
adoration at the moment. It is a vision that prefigures the
moment when all of us who have surrendered our lives to the
Lamb will be in glory with Him. Far from an un-biblical
sacrilege, Scott Hahn realized that Catholics have the worship
that Jesus Christ intended-the worship of the Lamb who was
slain.
The image is one of encouragement and hope. Today, more
than ever, our Pope, Bishops and Priests need your prayers.
We live in a world hostile to Jesus Christ. In many ways it is
similar to the persecution against Paul and Barnabas in today’s
first reading-“leading men of the city stirred up a persecution
against Paul and Barnabas and expelled them from their
territory.” What I choose to focus on, however, is the last
passage of the first reading: “The disciples were filled with joy
and the Holy Spirit.” Jesus warned all his followers that they
could expect persecution if they wish to be his disciples. But
he said, then and says now, “Be of good cheer, I have
overcome the world.” Let today’s reading fill your heart with
joy and hope. St. Teresa of Avila used to say “God save us
from sad-faced saints.” Once we begin to see how God’s grace
is there to strengthen and encourage us we will be filled with
joy. We, like the great multitude in today’s second reading
should rejoice that we have the privilege, at Mass, to join with
the heavenly multitude “who have survived the time of the
great distress.” May God bless you, encourage you, and bring
you the healing you need.

Fourth Sunday of Easter
Introduction-Liturgy of the Word:
Brothers and sisters, we are invited by our gracious God to
continue our Easter celebration on this Good Shepherd
Sunday. The voice of the Good Shepherd calls us to continue
his work, that we may one day join with him and the company
of all the saints who have washed their robes and made them
white in the blood of the Lamb. Let us pray at our Eucharist
today for ears to hear what the Lord is calling each of us to do.
