He became an international trader in precious metals and lived most of his life in China and Europe. In establishing the endowment for the professorships — just one of his many gifts to UND — as an “investment in the future of my Alma Mater and of the people who make the future what it shall be.” He added, “I am especially indebted to the fine teachers who, in the end, have determined in large measure, how well I was able to learn and to use the knowledge that the University of North Dakota could provide.” Chester Fritz Distinguished Professors currently serving on the faculty include: Michael C. They are Dr. Brij Singh, professor of Basic Sciences in the School of Medicine and Health Sciences and Dr. Jack Weinstein, professor of Philosophy and Religion in the College of Arts and Sciences. The Chester Fritz Distinguished Professorships were established with an endowment gift from the late benefactor Chester Fritz. Revenue from the endowment provides for cash stipends to one or more full-time UND faculty members, who thereafter may use the title “Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor.” The first Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor was named in 1973. Just 77 individuals — including this year’s selectees — have been designated Fritz Professors, 32 of whom are currently on staff. Dr. Brij Singh Dr. Jack Weinstein “I can’t think of anyone who better embodies the traits expected of a Chester Fritz Distinguished Professor,” wrote a colleague in nominating Brij Singh, a faculty member in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Jack Russell Weinstein is known for his efforts to raise public interest and discussion in philosophy. He founded and continues to direct the Institute for Philosophy in Public Life and hosts the public radio show Why? Philosophical Discussions About Everyday Life. Accessible by the Internet and social media, each episode of Why? puts UND in front of more than 30,000 listeners around the world. Dr. Jack Weinstein One nominator observed, “It is rare indeed that a faculty member uses, and uses well, so many different communication methods. He is unique.” Numerous colleagues pointed to Singh’s remarkable achievements in research, teaching and service. He is an internationally Dr. Brij Singh recognized scientist for his studies on molecular mechanisms of TRP calcium channels in normal and pathological conditions. He has received more than $6.5 million in grants to support his research. His work is published in top-tier journals and highly cited by his peers. Weinstein is the author of two highly regarded books on the Scottish Enlightenment philosopher Adam Smith, as well as dozens of articles and chapters. Nominators also cited his skills as an educator. “Dr. Singh teaches his students the way he researches in his lab,” one wrote. “Exploration is encouraged, but good things do not come without a lot of hard work and effort.” He has consistently received excellent ratings from students. A colleague wrote, “Dr. Weinstein brought a renaissance to the department’s professional life, insofar as he showed the department’s faculty members that they could continue to emphasize exceptional teaching, but could also strive to be excellent scholars at the same time … Since Dr. Weinstein’s arrival in the department, research production has more than tripled.” Singh was praised for his extensive service to professional organizations and the University, and for the spirit of camaraderie he brings to the medical school. A nominator wrote, “He remains humble and is one of the best colleagues you can imagine. He is friendly, energetic, always willing to provide a helping hand to faculty and students who need it, and has shouldered more than his share of duties while continuing to develop and run a successful research enterprise.” Weinstein has earned an outstanding international reputation. He has been invited to lecture and teach at institutions in New York, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Austria, China, Finland and Italy. Weinstein has been honored for excellence in teaching. A nominator wrote, “He has a well-deserved reputation for being a demanding teacher who requires a high level of commitment from his students.” Another commented, “His pursuits epitomize the importance of liberal arts in our society … He challenges us, and he is not afraid of being challenged.” Singh earned the B.S. in biology and M.S. in biotechnology from Aligarh University, India, and the Ph.D. in biochemistry from Bhopal University, India, and the University of Bonn, Germany. He has been on the UND faculty since 2003. He was previously a research fellow with the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, Bethesda, Md.; the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; and the University of Bonn. Weinstein earned the B.A. at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at Boston University. Before joining the UND faculty in 2001, he taught at institutions in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Kentucky and California. 3 School of Graduate Studies: Doctoral Degrees Wayne Swisher, Dean Jody Lee Jensen, Moorhead, Minnesota Doctor of Philosophy Major: English Dissertation: “Paying But Half Heed To My Father And His World”. Becraft You have distinguished yourself as a leader and innovator for our nation’s armed forces, and as an outstanding advocate for our military families and especially for women in the service. A native North Dakotan, you earned your bachelor’s degree in nutrition at this University and went on to earn a master’s degree at the University of Southern California. After serving as a commissioned officer in the United States Army, you embarked on an exceptional career in the civilian branch of the U.S. Department of Defense. As a Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, you were honored for your energetic work on life quality issues for service members. In 1998, President Bill Clinton appointed you Assistant Secretary of the Navy. In this capacity, you revitalized recruiting for the Navy, initiated workforce planning, and expanded learning opportunities for military and civilian personnel. Exploring new opportunities, you left government service in 2001 to form your own consulting firm, focusing on strategic planning and leadership development. Your passion for learning and development has continued through a strong relationship with your Alma Mater. You have been a leader for both our Alumni Association and the Advisory Council of our College of Business and Public Administration. You and your husband established a World Affairs Scholarship to support UND students traveling to foreign affairs conferences, and you have opened your home to students visiting the Washington, D.C., area. Throughout your career, you have created new opportunities for our military service members and their families, and for our students. In recognition of your achievements, the University of North Dakota is proud to confer upon you the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters. Carolyn Becraft: Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military and Community Support, 1993-1998; Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs), 1998-2001; founded consulting firm of Becraft Associates in 2001. Honors: Office of the Secretary of Defense Outstanding Achievement Award, Quality of Life Award of the National Military Family Association, American Logistics Association Distinguished Service Award, Department of Defense Distinguished Public Service Medal. Service: Women in Defense, National Military Family Association. Gregory R. Page Citation for Gregory R. Page Yours is the classic American story of rising from humble beginnings to the top levels of business leadership. A native of Bottineau, North Dakota, you attended this University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1973. The next year, you began a career with the Cargill Corporation that would take you across the globe and through the ranks to the positions of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Your leadership would sustain Cargill’s growth as one of the world’s largest privately owned businesses. It would also bring Cargill into a special relationship with this University for the benefit of students in the College of Business and Public Administration. Your personal relationship with your Alma Mater has been exceptional. Through your generosity, the Page Family Marketing Center was established in Gamble Hall to provide students with more hands-on learning opportunities. You have supported dozens of student scholarships and an endowed chair in applied economics. Your guidance helped our Alumni Association and Foundation conduct the most successful fundraising campaign in North Dakota history. You have applied your energy and keen insights toward other worthy causes as well, notably the Boy Scouts and Big Brothers Big Sisters. Most recently you have served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Brazil-United States Business Council. Academic Pageantry The pageantry of American colleges and universities, including such ceremonies as commencement, has been inherited from the medieval universities of the 11th and 12th centuries. Academic life as it is known today began in the Middle Ages, first in the church and then in the guilds. The teaching guild was the Guild of the Master of Arts, in which the Bachelor was the apprentice of the Master and the dress was the outward sign of privilege and responsibility. continued. To maintain continuity with the past, University of North Dakota faculty, the stage officials and the degree candidates will wear academic dress. Principal features of academic garb are the gown, cap and hood. Early it became necessary for universities to set rules to preserve the dignity and meaning of academic dress. Both Cambridge and Oxford since the 15th century have made academic dress a matter of university control even to its minor details, and have repeatedly published revised regulations. American universities agreed on a definite system in 1895. The ceremony you will witness today will be less formal than would have been the case even two decades ago. Still, many traditions have been Academic Dress THE GOWN. The flowing gown comes from the 12th century. While it originally may have been worn as protection against the chill of unheated buildings, it has today become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, for it covers any trappings of rank or social standing underneath. It is black for all degrees, with pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree recipient, long closed sleeves with a slit at the arm or wrist for the master’s degree, or full bell double sleeves for the doctoral degree. Bachelor’s and master’s degree gowns have no trimming. For the doctoral degree, the gown is faced down the front with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves in the color distinctive of the faculty or discipline to which the degree pertains. with academic divisions are: white, College of Arts and Sciences; drab (subdued orange), College of Business and Public Administration; black and white, John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences; blue and white, College of Education and Human Development; orange, School of Engineering and Mines; purple, School of Law; green, School of Medicine; apricot, College of Nursing; black, Graduate School. For undergraduate students, the tassels hang on the right side of the cap until they receive their degrees, at which time the tassel is moved to the left. For master’s students, the tassel hangs on the left side of the cap and is not moved. THE HOOD. The hood is trimmed with one or more chevrons of a secondary color on the ground of the primary color of the college. The color of the facing of the hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the color of the lining designates the university or college which granted the degree. The official colors of the University of North Dakota, selected by the student body in preparation for the institution’s first commencement in 1889, are the pink and green of the prairie rose. THE CAP. Under Roman law, a slave that had been set free received the privilege of wearing a cap. The academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship, and of the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Ancient poetry records the cap of scholarship as square to symbolize the book. The color of the tassel denotes the discipline. At the University of North Dakota, the tassel colors associated Ceremonial Objects THE MACE. The mace was initially modeled after a 12th century implement of war. In earlier days, the mace, or heavy staff, was borne by or carried before a magistrate or other dignitary as an ensign of authority. A mace is placed as the symbol of royal authority on the treasury table in the British House of Commons at the opening of each session and is removed at its close. In the U.S. House or Representatives, it is a rather plain staff mounted in a marble pedestal at the right hand of the Speaker. The mace of the University of North Dakota symbolizes authority to carry out its mission, especially the granting of degrees. Made from the oak of the University’s first building, “Old Main,” the mace is carried by a marshal during academic processions and is placed at a prominent spot on the stage during commencement. for safekeeping. The wearing of the seal eventually became a symbol of authority. One side of the medallion worn by the president bears an engraving of the University’s official seal and the names of all former presidents are included on the chain of office. THE CHARTER. The University of North Dakota was founded six years before North Dakota became a state. The original, handwritten charter, enacted in 1883 by the Dakota Territorial Assembly, is preserved in UND’s archives. One facsimile is displayed in the President’s Office and another is used at commencements and other special occasions. THE UNIVERSITY FLAG. The University flag features the UND flame logo set on a white background. The flag is used at ceremonial events and is carried by the honorary faculty flag marshal to lead the commencement procession. The flag is displayed on the stage during the commencement ceremony along with the mace and charter. THE MEDALLION. A medallion or seal of office worn by the head of an educational institution is a practice that also dates to the Middle Ages. In those times, a seal was used to mark documents as official. Possession of the seal was so important that it was usually worn around the neck International and Tribal Flags International and tribal flags represent the rich diversity of the UND campus and the wide variety of ethnic backgrounds of the University’s students, faculty, and staff. The international flags and tribal flags carried in the procession and displayed at the front of the arena are from countries and tribal nations represented in this graduating class. 37 Approved Academic Honor Cords and Stoles Students who are members of the following honor societies will be wearing these adornments to their regalia: l Phi Beta Kappa — National Scholarship Honor Society for Liberal Arts and Sciences; pink and blue cords l Phi Eta Sigma — Honor Society for First Year Students; black and gold cords l Pi Alpha Alpha — National Honor Society for Public Affairs and Administration; light blue and gold cords l Pi Kappa Lambda — National Music Honor Society; gold and white cords l Pi Theta Epsilon — National Occupational Therapy Society; blue and gold cords l Psi Chi — Psychology Honor Society; platinum and navy cords l Sigma Gamma Epsilon — National Honor Society for Earth Sciences; gold, blue and silver cords l Sigma Pi Sigma — National Honor Society for Physics; green and white cords l Sigma Tau Delta — National Society for English representing high achievement in English language, literature, and writing; Cardinal red and black double strand cords l Sigma Theta Tau — International Honor Society of Nursing; purple and white cords l Tau Beta Pi — National Engineering Honor Society; white/orange cords l Tau Sigma — Transfer Student Honor Society; maroon and gold cords l Theta Alpha Kappa — National Honor Society for Religious Studies and Theology; red cords l Upsilon Pi Epsilon — International Honor Society for the Computing and Information Disciplines; maroon/white cords l Alpha Phi Sigma — National Criminal Justice Honor Society; blue and gold honor cords l Beta Alpha Psi — International Academic Honor Society for Accounting Majors; red and white cords l Beta Gamma Sigma — Honor Society accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International; worn by students and faculty members; blue and gold cords l Epsilon Pi Tau — National Academic Honor Society for Technology; blue, gold and white cords l Gamma Sigma Alpha — National Academic Honor Society for Greek Members; red and yellow cords l Gamma Theta Upsilon — International Honor Society in Geography; blue, brown and gold cords l Golden Key International Honor Society — royal blue and gold cords l IEEE - Eta Kappa Nu — Honor Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers; gold cords with red/blue tassel l Mortar Board — National Honor Society; silver and gold cords l National Residence Hall Honorary — blue and silver cords l National Society of Collegiate Scholars — National society recognizing outstanding academic achievement and involvement on campus; gold and burgundy cords l Order of Omega — National Leadership Academic Honor Society for Greek Members; gold and white cords l Phi Alpha — National Social Work Honor Society; gold cord l Phi Alpha Theta — History Honor Society; red and blue cords Non-Academic Recognition Cords UND Legacy Cords representing their tribal or individual cultural designs on top of the mortar board, or traditional clothing/regalia under their gown. Schafer, former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture under George W. Bush and former North Dakota Governor, became Interim President of the University of North Dakota on Jan. 15, 2016. A UND alumnus, Schafer follows Dr. Robert Kelley, UND’s 11th president, who retired Jan. 14, 2016. Raised in Bismarck, N.D., Schafer graduated from UND in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and earned an MBA from the University of Denver in 1970. Schafer was sworn in as the 29th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Jan. 28, 2008. As Secretary, he oversaw a $95 billion operating budget and more than 107,000 employees. He restructured and reshaped 29 agencies to modernize the focus of $285 billion in program delivery and built a new process for implementing the 2008 Farm Bill. He also initiated the Secretary’s Fight Hunger Initiative, directed the United States’ response to the World Food Crisis, and helped direct international trade negotiations on behalf of the federal government. Schafer served as North Dakota’s Governor from 1992 to 2000, making education the No. 1 priority of his administration. His administration was able to increase spending by reshaping the budget to reflect spending priorities. He also started the Education Roundtable, which led to the modernization of the system in North Dakota, and he co-founded the Western Governors University. Other administration priorities included diversification and strengthening of the economy, and reducing the cost of government. He also led efforts to upgrade North Dakota’s communications infrastructure and establish high-speed voice and data networks across the state. Before entering public life, Schafer was an executive with the Gold Seal Company in Bismarck, a nationally known consumer products company founded by his father, Harold Schafer. Ed Schafer joined Gold Seal after he earned his MBA and held a series of management positions before becoming president in 1978. Under his leadership, Gold Seal’s sales doubled and the net worth of the company tripled. It was sold in 1986. Schafer then went on to launch several new businesses. After leaving the Governor’s Office in 2000, he co-founded Extend America, a venture capital-backed company, to provide wireless voice and high-speed data services to commercial and residential customers in five rural Midwestern states. He also continues to serve as the chairman of the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation that oversees the operations of the historic town his father resurrected, and he became active in several other nonprofit and citizens advocacy groups in North Dakota. Edward Schafer and his wife, Nancy, have four children: Tom Schafer, Ellie Schafer, Eric Jones and Kari Hammer; and 13 grandchildren. William M. The history of the civic mace begins about the middle of the 13th century. Since about the 15th century, universities have displayed a mace as a symbol of both internal authority and the independence of the scholarly tradition. The mace of the University of North Dakota came into being at the direction of George W. Starcher, president from 1954 to 1971. In 1963 he approached Alvin Rudisill, chairman of the Industrial Arts Department, with the idea of creating a mace with materials from “Old Main,” UND’s first building. Condemned for decades for its severe structural deficiencies, Old Main was being demolished as administrative offices had moved to the newly completed Twamley Hall. Rudisill turned to one of his students, Dennis Kulas, who was also pursuing a minor in art. Kulas crafted a mace in wood and then a second, when some thought the first might be too heavy for ceremonial use. The first one is the mace that has been carried at the front of all commencement ceremonies since. Kulas explained the artistic ideas he incorporated into his design: “The theme used for making the mace was like a drop of water falling into a body of water, its effects sending out ripples throughout the water. Likewise, a little learning affects everyone by sending out knowledge to all four corners of the Earth, hence the design. The globe: symbolizing the Earth. The rings: symbolizing a drop of knowledge ever spreading throughout the Earth. The four spikes: emphasizing the four corners of the Earth.” The second mace used the same theme, but the globe was hollowed out to make it lighter by using recessed rings. “Old Main,” 1958 40 THE AWARDING OF DEGREES and academic distinctions listed in this program is contingent upon successful completion of the various requirements. Commencement ceremonies at UND are planned through the Office of Ceremonies and University Events in the Division of University and Public Affairs.
