New words • average • climate • distance • field • foreign • to freeze • fuel • global warming • same N IT Can locavores survive in Britain? T SA M PL E U he word locavore comes from San Francisco in California. Locavores try to eat local food. That isn’t difficult in this part of the USA, because there’s a lot of farmland. Fruit and vegetables grow in the fields, animals live happily in the Californian climate and the sea has lots of fish. The locavores freeze food in the summer so that they always have food during the winter. They want to help the fight against global warming. ‘Most food comes from many different countries. Some is local, but some comes from thousands of miles away. The average distance each item of food travels is 1,500 miles! That’s a lot of fuel,’ says one of the group. Now some British people want to try this idea. ‘Meat and dairy products are no problem,’ says Reg Smythe from Birmingham. ‘The only thing we can’t have is foreign fruit like bananas, melons or grapes. And we can only eat strawberries in June when they grow in England, but that’s all right. There’s something exciting when you eat the first strawberry of the year. Shops sell South African strawberries in December. Some went to look for gold, but many were farmers. They wanted land and a better life. SA M PL E U N IT They travelled in covered wagons. Oxen pulled the wagons, because they were strong and didn’t eat a lot of food. The journey took many months, and life was hard. When the pioneers arrived at the end of their journey, their new lives as farmers in the West began. August 14th 1853 We got up at 4 a.m. today. Mother made breakfast—we had coffee and biscuits. We started the 14th day of our journey at 7 a.m. We didn’t walk very fast, because the oxen were tired after a very long day yesterday. I looked for some fruit with my friends. We didn’t find any fruit, but we spotted a brown bear in the forest! It ran away through the trees when it saw us. After lunch, we arrived at a big river. Luckily, the water wasn’t deep, so we got across without any problems. We stayed by the river that night. Before I went to sleep, I remembered my old home in the East, but I wasn’t sad. I knew I had a new life now. Jake Hall was a boy who travelled to Oregon with his family.
