WV Health Care Association Names
Statewide Long Term Care Award Recipients
Long Term Care Professionals will be Honored at Awards Banquet in Wheeling
Charleston, WV – The West Virginia Health Care Association (WVHCA) will recognize several long
term care employees and volunteers for their outstanding performance and commitment to long term care
at the WVHCA Annual Awards Banquet on May 6, 2014 at Oglebay Resort & Conference Center in
Wheeling, West Virginia.
Nominations are submitted by co-workers and/or the management team to the WVHCA for consideration.
The nominations are judged by an Awards Committee who determines the winner based on criteria
provided by the WVHCA. The winners, award categories and their employing long term care facilities
are:
 Clay and Juanita Long, Adult Volunteer of the Year, Braxton Health Care & Rehabilitation
Center in Sutton;
 Matthew Byrd, Youth Volunteer of the Year, Wyoming Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in New
Richmond;
 Peterson Rehabilitation Hospital & Geriatric Center in Wheeling, Best Practice Award
recipient for the Admission Ambassador Program;
 Charles Dabney, Individual Excellence Award, McDowell Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in
Gary;
 Webster Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Cowen, Distinguished Community Service
Award recipient for the Webster Nursing Community Involvement project;
 Dr. William Mercer, Distinguished Service Award recipient, Peterson Rehabilitation Hospital &
Geriatric Center in Wheeling;
 Margaret Sabo, Outstanding Assisted Living Professional Award, Serra Manor in Weirton;
 Rachel Armentrout, Distinguished Director of Nursing, E. A. Hawse Nursing & Rehabilitation
Center in Baker; and
 Cynthia Wagoner, Distinguished Administrator of the Year at Dawnview Center in Fort Ashby.
Seven assisted living communities will be recognized for deficiency free surveys in health and life safety
in 2013, including Arthur B. Hodges Center Memory Unit in Charleston; Autumn Acres Personal
Care Center in Berkeley Springs; Grant County Assisted Living in Petersburg; Serra Manor in
Weirton; The Ridgemont at Edgewood Summit in Charleston; Sweetbriar in Dunbar; and The
Summit at Hidden Valley in Oak Hill.

The West Virginia Health Care Foundation, a subsidiary of the West Virginia Health Care Association,
aids deserving students who are employed in WVHCA member facilities and are seeking higher
education and training in their careers. Including the 2014 scholarship recipients listed below, a total of
228 scholarships will have been given to students totaling $169,000.
Five different scholarships are offered through the foundation: AMFM Charitable Foundation
Scholarship, Marjorie L. Anderson Scholarship, Serra Family Foundation Scholarship, WV Long-Term
Care Service Corporation Scholarship, and the Herman Conaway Scholarships. The AMFM Charitable
Foundation will award $2,500 to a worthy long term care professional, Carla Stoner of Wayne Nursing
& Rehabilitation Center in Wayne. The family of Marjorie L. Anderson will award $2,500 to Kristin
Slusher of Meadowbrook Acres Nursing Center in Charleston. The Serra Family Foundation awards
$2,250 each year to an outstanding and deserving student. The award recipient for 2014 is Alisha
Crossland of Cortland Acres in Thomas. The West Virginia Long-Term Care Service Corporation’s
$1,500 scholarship recipient is Jami Clay of Cedar Ridge Center in Sissonville. Herman Conaway
Scholarships in the amount of $750 each will be awarded to 19 long term care employees. The
scholarship winners and their employing facilities are:
