Vault Article 8 - Vault 8.1 General
Vault Article 8 - Vault 8.1 General – The gymnast is required to perform one or two vaults, depending on the requirements for that STEP and competition phase. The vaults may be the same or different. – The maximum run distance is 25 metres. However, a shorter run distance may be stipulated in the STEP. – After receiving the signal from the D1 judge, the gymnast executes the first vault and then returns to the end of the runway to post the number for her second vault. When the D1 Judge signals, she must be ready to begin her second vault immediately. – The vault begins with a run, an arrival and take off from the springboard with two feet, from either a forward or backward position except where stipulated in the STEP. – Beginning with the take-off, the vault phases are: – Pre-flight (1st flight), – Repulsion, – Flight (2nd flight) and – Landing. – All vaults must be performed with repulsion from both hands from the vaulting table except where stipulated in the STEP. – Permitted running approaches - if the gymnast has not touched any part of the apparatus, – When 1 vault is required (STEPs 1 to 7 and STEP 10); the gymnast may have a second run approach with a deduction of 1.0. A third run approach is not permitted. – When 2 vaults are required (STEPs 8 to 9 and STEP 10 for Vault finals); The gymnast may have a third run approach with a deduction of 1.0. A fourth run approach is not permitted. – For round off entry vaults, the gymnast is required to use the supplied "safety collar" properly. § Corridor markings for STEPs 6 to 10: – As an orientation for directional deductions, there will be a marked corridor (lane) down the centre of the landing mat. The gymnast must land and finish to a stable stand in this zone. The border marking itself is part of the prescribed landing area. There is a line deduction when the gymnast goes outside the marked corridor. ž Land or step out with part or whole of 1 foot/hand -0.1 ž Land or step out with part or whole of 2 feet/hands or body -0.3 8.2 Vault groups – The vaults are classified into the following groups: – Group 1 – Vault without salto (Handspring, Yamashita, Round off) with or without LA turn in 1st and/or 2nd flight phase. – Group 2 – Handspring forward with or without full turn (360°) in 1st flight phase – salto forward or backward with or without LA turn in 2nd flight phase. – Group 3 – Handspring with ¼ - ½ turn (90° - 180°) in 1st flight phase (Tsukahara) – salto backward with or without LA turn in 2nd flight phase. – Group 4 – Round off (Yurchenko) with or without ¾ turn (270°) in 1st flight phase – salto backward with or without LA turn in 2nd flight phase. – Group 5 – Round off with ½ turn (180°) in 1st flight phase – salto forward or backward with or without LA turn in 2nd flight phase. February 2013 - 35 - Vault 8.3 Requirements – Where the gymnast is required to land on her feet, if she falls in 2nd flight, but lands feet first, the vault is awarded. If she fails to land feet first, then the vault will score zero. – In STEPs 1 to 7 the gymnast performs one vault. If she performs an invalid vault and scores zero, she may attempt the vault again and will receive a -1.0 deduction from the final score as a Neutral Deduction. – STEPs 1 to 6 each have a D Score of 5.0 From step in front of springboard, kick to handstand, placing hands on springboard, fall to flat back STEP 1 on mats. From approximately 10m; run, hurdle, two foot take off from the springboard, straight jump to STEP 2 stand on 60cm mats, followed by a kick to handstand fall to flat back on the same mats. Note: the run up is evaluated, but deductions for steps on landing do not apply and the transition between the landing of the jump and the kick to handstand is also not evaluated. STEP 5 From a run; two foot take off from the springboard, jump with straight body to handstand, fall to flat back on 90cm mats. From a run; two foot take off from the springboard, handspring with repulsion to flat back on 100cm mats. From a run; two foot take off from the springboard, handspring with flight over the vaulting table to flat back on mats the same height or higher than the vaulting table. However, as the reason for this skill to be included in the programme is to encourage dynamics and an explosive take off from the springboard, steps on landing will not be deducted, but all body posture fault and fall deductions will still apply. – In STEP 7, the gymnast should make contact with her feet first on the mats. For the forward landing, her hips and shoulders should be open, her head in a neutral position, and her arms extended upwards. – – 8.5 For the backward landings, the gymnast should have a dished shape with her head in a neutral position, and arms extended forwards at horizontal. As the purpose of this vault is to develop the correct entry, repulsion and second flight technique, normal landing deductions do not apply. ž If the gymnast has so much height that she is unable to make contact with her feet on the mats first, there will be no deduction for a fall, providing she maintains the correct body shape throughout. ž If the gymnast under-rotates and falls towards the vaulting table OR, on the backward landing, she pikes her hips to land on her back, she will be deducted for a fall. ž If she over-rotates due to excessive power, she will not be deducted for a fall, but all body shape deductions will still apply. In STEP 10 when the gymnast is required to do 2 different vaults, and she performs only one vault, or the same vault twice, she will score zero for the second vault and the final score will be the average of the first vault and zero. Additional supports under the springboard (eg an extra board) are not permitted. § Mounts: – If the gymnast touched the springboard or apparatus on her first attempt but did not mount, she will receive a deduction of -1.0, she must then start her exercise and the mount will not be awarded any DV. – The gymnast is permitted a 2nd attempt to mount (with a deduction of -1.0) if she has not touched the springboard or the apparatus on her first attempt – A 3rd attempt is not permitted. § Intermediate fall time: – During a fall from the apparatus, an interruption of 30 seconds is allowed. – Timing begins when the gymnast is on her feet after the fall. – The fall period ends when the gymnast takes off from the mat to remount the bars. – The elapsed time during the fall will be displayed in seconds on the scoreboard. – A signal will be communicated at: ž 10 seconds, ž 20 seconds, and at the ž 30 second time limit – If the gymnast does not remount the bars by the end of the 30 second time limit, the exercise is considered terminated. 9.2 Content and construction of the exercise – D Panel § For each STEP the content and construction of the exercise is different. § In STEPs 1 to 6 the exercises are compulsory and the gymnast must perform the exercise in the specified order. The exercise should be continuous without hesitation or intermediate swings unless specified in the STEP’s DV requirements; ie if there is a requirement for the gymnast to perform two consecutive casts, then the second is not considered an intermediate swing. § In STEP 7 to 10 optional exercises, the Difficulty Value should represent a variety of the following categories of movement: – Circle and swings – Flight elements Giant circles backward Flight from HB to grasp on LB (or reversed) Giant circles forward Counter flight (over the bar) Swings and clear hip circles Vaults Stalders forward and backward Hechts Piked circles forward and backward Saltos § Elements not permitted in the STEPs programme – Backwards flyaway dismount with half turn, in any body position (element 6.204) is not permitted. If a 360º turn is attempted, and the gymnast fails to complete the turn exactly, it will be recognised as element 6.104 and awarded an A Difficulty Value. 9.3 Composition Requirements (CR) – D Panel § For each competition STEP in the optional part of the programme, the Composition Requirements of the exercise are different; they represent the various element groups in the Table of Elements. § Each Composition Requirement has a value of +0.5. § Elements with no Difficulty Value cannot be used for Composition Requirements. § Complete omission of a Composition Requirement will incur a -1.0 deduction from the Final Score. - 40 - January 2014 Apparatus Specifications Measurements of height are from the floor, not the mat.
