

Before operating the solar inverter, read this manual thoroughly to gain an understanding of the
unit. If any doubt exists then please contact POWER ELECTRONICS, (1-415-874-3668) or
your nearest agent.
Handle the solar inverter with care according to its weight.
Install the inverter according to the instructions within this manual.
Do not place heavy objects on the inverter.
Ensure that the mounting orientation is correct.
Do not drop the inverter or subject it to impact.
The Freesun inverters contain static sensitive printed circuits boards. Use static safety
procedures when handling these boards.
Avoid installing the inverter in conditions that differ from those described in the Technical
Characteristics section.
The cabinet doors must only be opened for commissioning, maintenance and troubleshooting,
as well as for data query and parameter setting.
The device is equipped with several fans for cooling. To perform any work on the fans is
required that the equipment is switched off as explained in the correspondent section. This
procedure should be taken into account for commissioning, maintenance and repair work.
The device fans and the power unit create significant levels of operating noise. In addition to
this, a fault in the device can lead to very high sound levels. We recommend the use of ear
protection when in the vicinity of the device for extended periods.
Immediately after isolating the device, depending on the operating conditions, certain
components can be very hot (e. g. fuses, transformer core, sine wave filter, heatsinks, etc.).
Safety gloves should always be worn when working near components that can be expected to
be very hot. We recommend using safety gloves and glasses during all work on the inverter.

CAUTION
SPECIAL HAZARDS OF PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEMS
Photovoltaic systems have special characteristics that can represent special hazards:







An active power source is connected. This means that, regardless to the operating mode of the
inverter, there may be voltage present, either from the photovoltaic generator and/or the
FREESUN. This is especially important to consider when disconnecting particular parts of the
system.
Very high DC voltages are present (no zero-crossing) which, in case of a fault or inappropriate
use of fuses or plugs, may lead to arcing.
The short-circuit current of the photovoltaic generator is dependent on the level of solar
irradiation and only slightly more than the maximum operating current.
A highly branched generator array may be difficult to disconnect if a fault develops (e. g. short
circuit). We recommend the extra use of an external DC disconnect and fuses for disconnecting
the inverter to meet the requirements of NEC 690. These components are included in the
Power electronics optional disconnecting unit.
Fuses should be allocated to each DC input of the FREESUN inverter as it is required by NEC
690. Power Electronics covers this requirement with the Disconnecting Unit included in HEC-UL
and HEC-UL+ Series inverters. The Freesun HEC-UL+ integrates the Disconnecting Unit in the
same inverter’s cabinet and the Freesun HEC-UL integrates it in an annexed cabinet.
Power Electronics must be informed about the grid operator requirements.
The device contains capacitors on the AC and DC sides. The discharge time of the capacitors is
5 minutes. Wait until the capacitors have been discharged before carrying out any maintenance
task.

INTEGRATED ELECTRICAL SAFETY FEATURES
Freesun inverters have the following integrated electrical safety features:






Software protection controls (See section 3.3 and the Programming and Software manual).
On/Off switch (Reference 1 of the figure 0.1).
DC Disconnect Switch (Reference 3 of the figure 0.1).
AC Circuit breaker (Reference 2 of the figure 0.1).
Anti-islanding protection (See the Programming and Software Manual).
LED/Front panel display when unit is operational.
SYSTEM REPAIR AND TROUBLESHOOTING
CAUTION
Always follow established Lockout/Tagout procedures. Failure to comply can result in serious injury
or death to personnel.
LOCKOUT / TAGOUT
Lockout/tagout standards establish procedures to protect personnel from hazardous energy sources on
equipment during service and maintenance. OSHA 29 CFR, part 1910.333 gives flexibility for facility
operators to design a lockout/tagout program that suits site specific needs.
Lockout/tagout disables equipment producing hazardous amounts of electrical energy allowing servicing
and maintenance personnel to safely perform their jobs. Employees must be trained to understand and
follow the hazardous energy control procedures.


Use only lockout/tagout devices authorized for particular equipment.
Lockout/tagout devices must be durable, standardized and substantial.
Lockout/tagout tags must identify authorized users to ensure the procedures are strictly adhered to. In
order to reduce the chance of inadvertent system energization, the individual identified on the
lockout/tagout notices should be the only personnel in possession of keys that can be used to unlock the
lockout devices.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
FREESUN HEC-UL & HEC-UL+ SERIES
POWER ELECTRONICS
GROUND FAULT WARNING
If your installation has the positive or negative pole of the photovoltaic system earth
connected, the following instructions must be followed:
The only point in the installation where the positive or the negative pole should be
grounded is in the inverter (through the Ground Fault Detector Interrupter -GFDI- that
is added to that effect). It is important to note that if there was another grounded
connection (pole) elsewhere in the installation (in the panels themselves, in the String
Supervisor, etc...) the protection provided by the additional GFDI would NOT be
effective.
Therefore, as part of scheduled maintenance, it is recommended to inspect the insulation between
the grounded pole and the earth. This will prevent the GFDI from providing inappropriate protection
due to uncontrolled ground leakage.
MARKS, SYMBOLS AND CONTROLS ON THE INVERTER
CAUTION
Do not ignore safety warnings.
Failure to follow all safety warnings and caution could result in equipment damage or injury to personnel.
Inverter CAUTION labels are listed in the following table:

1 INTRODUCTION
The Freesun HEC-UL and HEC-UL+ Series inverters are the latest advance in solar inverter technology
2 2
2 2
based on Automatic Redundant Modular Master-Slave System (ARM S ). ARM S technology creates a
redundant solar inverter by automatically bypassing a faulted inverter module and restarting the inverter
2 2
making production losses a problem of the past. The Freesun Series ARM S Technology product line is
made of 80kVA to 150kVA individual module inverters with powerful dual microprocessors per module,
interconnected with a dedicated communication system for synchronization, and with both AC/DC
protections. These building blocks are used to design inverter systems from 160kVA to 1200kVA nominal
output power and with 1 to 4 MPPT windows.
FREESUN accessories fulfill all the solar installations requirements such as disconnecting unit, power
control interface (PCI), string monitoring (SFS), datalogger, remote inverter monitoring (FSDC),
meteorology stations and additional electric protections.
The Freesun HEC-UL and HEC-UL+ are the North American outdoor, UL-1741 approved versions of the
HE series. This system reduces the overall photovoltaic plant wiring and transportation costs.
The Power Electronics Disconnecting Unit is a cabinet that integrates DC input protection and dedicated
disconnects in the Freesun inverter. The Disconnecting Unit allows HEC-UL & HEC-UL+ inverters to
comply with NEC 2011 Article 690 Section III Disconnecting Means section 690.13.
For the compliance of the section 690.13 of the National Electric Code ANSI/NFPA 70 it is mandatory that
“Means shall be provided to disconnect all current-carrying dc conductors of a photovoltaic system from all
other conductors in a building or other structure”.
The Freesun HEC-UL+ integrates the Disconnecting Unit in the same inverter’s cabinet and the Freesun
HEC-UL can integrate it in an annexed cabinet.

5 HANDLING, TRANSPORTATION AND
INSTALLATION
CAUTION
Carefully read the following transportation and installation instructions.
Failure to follow transportation and installation instructions could result in equipment damage or injury to
personnel.
5.1 Delivery and Storage
The Freesun Inverters are carefully tested and packed for shipment. In the event of transport damage,
please ensure that you notify the transport agency and Power Electronics (International +34 96 136 65
57) or your nearest agent, within 24hrs from receipt of the goods.
Make sure model and serial number of the Inverter are the same on the delivery note and unit.
The inverter should be stored in a location that is protected from direct sun and excess moist. The
storage temperature rating for the inverter is -25°C and +55°C.
5.2 Handling and Transportation
Only the transport methods described in this document or in the delivery notes are approved. Follow the
transport requirements here described. Any other transport method or system could damage the unit.
The inverter and the Disconnecting Unit cabinets are designed to be lifted with a crane. Power
Electronics provides eight lifting eye bolts for the inverter. Furthermore, in the event of having an HEC-UL
inverter, Power Electronics provides four lifting eye bolts for the Disconnecting unit. These lifting eye
bolts must be installed in the top part of the inverter as shown in the next figures. Make sure the lifting
capacity of all the equipment is greater than the cabinets’ weight.
A crane is required for the onsite unloading of the inverter. It is the customer’s responsibility to ensure
unimpeded access to the final place or location, taking into account the movement and handling of these
vehicles in the field where the unloading is going to take place.
Additionally the crane must meet the following requirements.



The crane must be independent from the truck.
The crane must be equipped with an eight-point chain or two four-point chains (one four-point chain
for the Disconnecting Unit).
The crane and the transport items must have a greater load capacity than the inverter weight.
Customer must provide an 8 points or two 4 points lifting chains and rig the inverter as it is shown in the
next figure (one four-point chain for the Disconnecting Unit).

During transportation it is mandatory to manipulate it carefully and as close to the floor as possible.
CAUTION
If the maximum tonnage of cranes cannot meet the requirement (refer to section 4), it could cause
damage to the equipment and lead to injury to people.
Avoid brusque movements and shocks during lifting. Pause before lowering it to the floor and
then slowly lower it on the floor to avoid any shock. Otherwise, the equipment can be damaged.
Once the inverter is placed on the foundations, the installer must secure the inverter to the concrete
using a M14 (7/16) hot dip galvanized bolts of at least 10.9 quality, applying a torque of 73.75lb/ft
(100Nm). There is an L shape in each point of support that fixes the inverter to the floor. User must use a
bolt per point of support.

Each internal module of the inverter requires 1400m³/h of fresh air. For example, an inverter with 4
modules requires 5600m³/h). Check the technical characteristics of the selected inverter to determine the
number of modules.
If the inverter is installed in a metal or concrete cabinet, ensure that the enclosure is equipped with
adequate exhaust air vents and inlet dampers. The HVA system must be designed to ensure the ambient
ratings of the inverters with sufficient capacity to dissipate the internal heat generated.
The inverter module electronics and the AC module are cooled through a cooling system installed in each
electronics compartment that moves the fresh and clean air from the bottom, through the dust filters and
fans, to the top dust filters and exhaust fans. Each fan presents a cooling capacity of 75m³/h.
The dust filters located in the inlet and outlet grating of the cabinet must be cleaned or replaced as part of
the regularly scheduled maintenance. The inverter can integrate two types of grating. The frequency of
maintenance should be according to the environmental site conditions.
To replace the type 1 inlet and outlet filters, follow the next steps:




Pull from the top right corner to unclip the grating.
Remove and clean/replace the filter.
Place again the filter.
Clip again the grating pressing smoothly.
Figure 5.10 Filter clean/replacement
To replace the type 2 inlet and outlet filters, follow the next steps:






Unscrew the three bolts that fix the grating to the electronics module.
Unscrew the two bolts that fix both parts of the grating.
Remove and clean/replace the filter.
Place again the filter.
Screw again the grating parts.
Screw again the grating to the electronics module.
Figure 5.11 Filter clean/replacement
Maintain clearance distances around the inverter to ensure adequate cooling capacity for the inverter.
Install the inverter in such a way that it is not possible for intake and exhaust air from the inverter to be
drawn into the air intake and exhaust of other devices (e.g., the transformer or other inverter).

5.7 Noise Levels
The Freesun inverter series are designed to be installed in an industrial environment. The inverter noise
level is below 70dBA2 at a distance of 1m from the rear part. Noise attenuation occurs as distance from
the source increases.

6 WIRING ACCESS AND CONNECTIONS
All cable connections to the Freesun HEC-UL and HEC-UL+ must be installed with conduit hubs or fittings
rated as 3, 3S, 4, 4X, 6 or 6P according to UL 514B that ensure that moisture and dust does not enter the
inverter.
The inverter is designed for either floating or grounded PV installations. If the
photovoltaic field installation is designed with either positive or negative poles
connected to the ground, the pole ground connection must be connected within the
inverter, specifically by means of the GFDI. For grounded arrays, do not connect the
PV array to ground at any other point in the system (i.e. Photovoltaic panels, String
Supervisor, etc...). Otherwise, the GFDI overcurrent monitoring will be compromised.

6.1 Ground connection
Before connecting the AC and DC power connections, be sure that the chassis of the inverter is
connected to ground through the dedicated terminals. The ground terminals are located in the right side
and in the left side of the inverter. Ground terminals are labeled with the appropriate ground connection
symbol.
For safety reasons, measure the ground resistance of the plant itself. The
ground resistance must be determined prior to the first start up of the
Plant.
It is installer’s responsibility to provide code compliant grounding
conductor.
WARNING
When connecting the earth grounding electrode, ensure that all connected
cables are securely tight with adequate strain relief. The specified torque
for the M8 (1/4) PE terminals is 8.11lb/ft (11Nm).
System grounding, as required by sections 690.41, 690.42 and 690.43 of
the National Electric Code is the responsibility of the installer. Input and
output circuits are isolated from the enclosure and the system grounding.

6.2 DC connections
An active power source is connected. This means that, regardless of the operating mode
of the inverter, there may be voltage present, either from the photovoltaic generator
and/or the FREESUN. This is especially important to consider when disconnecting
particular parts of the system. The Disconnecting Unit offers the possibility to isolate all
the inverter from the DC voltage.
As standard the isolation monitoring system is set at 1kΩ, this value is adjusted to
compliance with UL 1741.
In both the HEC-UL and HEC-UL+ inverters, the DC cables will be routed through the metallic panel
situated in the bottom part of the inverter Disconnecting Unit and connected to the input plate. Each cable
must be routed in the inverter only with conduit hubs or fittings rated as 3, 3S, 4, 4X, 6 or 6P according to
UL 514B. Cables must be brought from beneath the inverter.

[2] NEC’s PV continuous current = Icc • 1.25.
[3] The FSDU is intended to be connected to FS___CU units with the maximum continuous current indicated in the table. Differences between
NEC’s PV Continuous current and Disconnecting unit maximum continuous current are caused by the different DC:AC ratios required in PV
fields.
The input configuration and the fuses value must be selected according to the PV installation design
requirements. It is responsibility of the installer to select the correct value. The breaking capacity of the
fuses is 10kA and the rated voltage 1000Vdc. For more information about a correct sizing of the fuses
consult Power Electronics.
Note: The solar panels short-circuit current is significantly below these values.
The backfeed short-circuit currents available from the inverter are below the rated currents of the DC
fuses and AC circuit breakers.
6.8 Auxiliary Power Source
The HEC-UL and HEC-UL+ inverters have as standard an internal power transformer (situated in the AC
module), that provides 3x400Vac 60Hz internal power supply for control and ventilation circuit. The
internal supply is not available for customer equipment.
Power Electronics inverters also have 3x208Vac 60Hz supply for external loads which provide up to
2kVA to an external system (Lighting, String supervisors, MeteoStation and others).

6.9 External Control Connections
It is possible to command the inverter prepared for external power supply. In this case, the installer
should route the cables together through the wiring conduit, then route the cables as close as possible to
the right side chassis to reduce the internal interference emission. Finally, drill the bottom panel of the AC
module and protect it only with conduit hubs or fittings rated as 3, 3S, 4, 4X, 6 or 6P according to UL
514B. For more information, consult Power Electronics.
6.10 Control connection
This section includes general information and recommendations about the inverter communication wiring.
For further information about accessories connection (Power Control Interface, String Supervisor, Ripple
control receiver, Freesun Data Center, Meteo Stations, ...), please consult the appropriate user manual.
Consider the following recommendations prior to the control wiring installation:






It is recommended to use shielded twisted cable with the shield connected to ground on one side
only.
The installer should route the cables through the bottom panel of the AC module cables access
plate and protect them with conduit hubs or fittings rated as 3, 3S, 4, 4X, 6 or 6P according to UL
514B to ensure the inverter degree of protection.
The installer should route the cables through the wiring duct up to the module control board.
Control wiring should be installed as far as possible from the power wiring.
If it is necessary to cross power cables and control cables, these crossings must be done in a
perpendicular way.
Do not use control voltages of 24VDC and 208/120VAC over the same multiple wire cable or
cable gutter.

Internally, each inverter module communicates with the master through CAN communication and
synchronizes by cable.
Externally, the modules can communicate with other devices through RS232 / RS485 / USB / Ethernet
(Modbus RTU, Ethernet TCP/IP protocols).
To connect and power Power Electronics accessories, follow the installation instructions of the respective
manufacturers (ripple control receiver, router, meteorological stations …).

7 COMMISSIONING
Before commissioning, all work performed on the device should be thoroughly checked. Verify that the DC
and AC voltages conform to the limits allowed on the inverter.
7.1 Initial Conditions
WARNING
Before starting the inverter, ensure that the grounding resistance is within site
specified limits.
Otherwise, the operator may be at risk of an electric shock.
Use safety glasses and adequate PPE during operation with the door
opened.
7.2 First Time Switch On
Verify all connections have been made according to the previous “Wiring Access and Connection”
section.
Auxiliary control voltage switches on:
1.
Switch on the auxiliary circuit breakers of each inverter module. These circuit breakers
include the ones for the fans, soft load, input and output voltage measurement, auxiliary
control voltage protection, etc. (See figure below 1).
2.
Verify that the main AC circuit breaker of each inverter module is switched on. The main
circuit breaker is located in the rear of the inverter module. (See figure below 2).
3.
Switch on the following breakers located in the AC module

Auxiliary control voltage circuit breaker.

Auxiliary power source circuit breaker.

RCD circuit breaker.

Main auxiliary circuit breaker.
4.
When all the breakers are switched ON, the inverter is powered with the auxiliary control
voltage and the display unit is illuminated, indicating the state of each inverter module. (See
figure below 3, 10).
Voltage measurement:

Check that the AC voltage corresponds with the output AC voltage configured in the inverter.

Check that the AC phase sequence corresponds with the inverter phase sequence.

Check that the DC voltage is below the maximum DC voltage in each MPPT.
Power switch on:
5.
Close the inverter’s doors.
6.
Remove Lockout/Tagout locks and safeties.
7.
For the compliance of the section 690.13 of the National Electric Code ANSI/NFPA 70 it is
mandatory to use additional DC switches or fuses to disconnect the inverter from the PV
installation. These DC switches are located in the Disconnecting Unit. Connect all of them
and check that DC voltage is present in the input DC busbar of each MPPT of the inverter.
In case the installation is equipped with String Supervisors by Power Electronics, ensure
that the DC switches are connected.
8.
Check that the medium voltage switchgear is switched on, so that the AC output of the
inverter is connected to the grid.
9.
Open the AC module window and switch on the main circuit breaker located in the output of
