INTRODUCTION
My board is an interface device that connects your compatible ATARI disk drive (810/1050) to a
PC with an available RS232 (DB9) port. Also a USB-Serial converter cable emulating a serial port
(Virtual COM port) can be used with a laptop/desktop which does not have a legacy RS232 COM
port. Depending on the PC software used, it enables your PC to access the Atari disk drive and
copy and create disk images of your Atari disks. Normal and copy protected disks can be
copied. The interface can also be used to write disk images back to a real floppy to create a disk
based copy of a disk image file.
Disk images created using 10502PC hardware can be presented to your Atari Computer by the
SIO2PC hardware, driven by Peripheral Emulation software, and your Atari can access those
disk images the same way it accesses disks on a real Atari disk drive. The Peripheral Emulation
software can also emulate the copy protection schemes found on copy protected disks,
allowing you to use your copy protected software through a SIO2PC connection.
In short the 10502PC board provides an excellent way of archiving your Atari disks and creating
real disks of archived software.
The board is compatible with DOS based 1050-2-PC software which is part of the original
SIO2PC v4.21 (by Nick Kennedy), DOS based APE/ProSystem v1.18 by AtariMax, and the
Windows based APE/ProSystem v.3.0.2 software again by AtariMax.

My 10502PC interface is a quality built device assembled on a prototyping board. Each one is
hand built with outmost attention to detail and by using quality components for a long and
trouble free operation. I test each and every one thoroughly to make sure that they perform
according to the specs before they are released for sale. I use a prototyping board to keep the
cost down and savings high for you, but i do not compromise quality for price.
The board will perform every bit as good as any professionally produced 10502PC. The board
comes with a lifetime warranty against material and workmanship defects (Please see the
Service & Warranty section at the end of this document)
AVAILABLE VERSIONS
My 10502PC interface gives you many options for installation/use.
1. Internal Installation: The basic board comes with an optional 5 wire flat ribbon cable
that needs to be soldered to the appropriate pins of the SIO port on the ATARI drive.
The other end of the cable is connected to the board via an included 5 connector
terminal block. You will also need a straight through serial cable for the connection to
the PC. Those cables are readily available from many computer retailers. One
inexpensive source for those cables may be your local second hand store or eBay, if you
don’t already have one lying around the house. Internal Installation requires available
space in the Atari drive, and some soldering and cutting skills.
2. External with a built-in SIO cable: This one is similar to the internal version with the
exception of an SIO cable already connected to the 5 connector terminal block. You
neither need to cut an existing SIO cable nor to purchase a new one (which may be hard
to locate these days). You just need a straight through serial cable for the connection to
the PC.
3. External with a built-in SIO cable and enclosure: If you don’t like to have all the
electronics of your interface exposed (increasing the chance of a mishap) this is the
configuration to choose. It comes enclosed in an ABS case ready to be plugged into your
ATARI. It also includes a Power/Activity LED and an external toggle switch for easy
10502PC/ProSystem mode selection. You just need a straight through serial cable for
the connection to the PC.

BOARD CONFIGURATION
All versions of my 10502PC interface require the same simple set-up procedure before you can
start using them.
The board can either be used with the original 1050-2-PC software (part of SIO2PC software)
from Nick Kennedy, or with the AtariMax ProSystem software (part of APE software).
It is pre-configured to be in ProSystem mode prior to shipping. To change the pre-configured
setting on the board, simply remove the jumper cap from pins 1-2 (ProSystem - DTR) of the 3
pin header and re-insert it to the pins 2-3 (1050-2-PC - RTS) of the same. (You will need to open
the enclosure if you bought an external board with an enclosure but without a toggle switch).
If you purchased the board with the
enclosure and toggle switch options, it is
set to be in ProSystem Mode (Switch UP
position) prior to shipment.
If you purchased the terminal block
version, follow these steps to connect a
cut ATARI SIO cable to the interface:
Take a look at the photo to determine how
to insert the wires of the cut ATARI SIO
cable into the connectors of the terminal
block. Note that the color of wires in an
ATARI SIO cable may differ from cable to cable, however the standard Molex Connector colors
are; Orange: SIO-3, Black: SIO-4, Green: SIO-5, Purple: SIO-7, and Blue: SIO-10. I suggest that
you double check your cable to verify the colors do match the SIO pins on your ATARI
computer, (See below for an illustration of the ATARI SIO Connector pin-outs) a malfunction
/damage may result by inserting wrong wires into the terminal block. If you purchased your
interface with an enclosure but without an Atari SIO cable, you will need to disassemble the
enclosure to insert SIO wires into the terminal block. When re-assembling the box, first insert
the DB9 end of the board into it’s opening with an angle, then ease the rest of the board gently
into the box for a proper fit.

ATARI SIO Connector pin-outs (looking from behind the computer)
No other configuration is needed; simply plug the interface to your ATARI disk drive, your disk
drive to your Atari computer (to supply power to the interface) and the serial port on the
interface to your PC and you’re ready to go. If you purchased the power adaptor jack option,
you don’t need to connect the Atari computer to the chain, instead plug-in a 5v regulated
power adaptor to the interface to supply power. The power adaptor must supply 5v of
regulated power at a minimum of 50ma. If the interface is not recognized by the software, or
you’re having read/write errors, first check the voltage on your power adaptor, if it is below 5v
you need to change your adaptor to one that supplies required voltage. Also verify that your
interface is working with an ATARI computer connected and powered-on and supplying the 5v
voltage through the SIO chain. If the interface works when an ATARI computer is connected
then the problem is definitely with your power adaptor.

SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION (ProSystem for Windows 3.0.2)
Follow these simple steps to start using your interface with ProSystem for Windows v3.0.2
(steps are similar for other software):
1. Connect the SIO end of the interface to your Atari disk drive. If you purchased the power
adaptor jack option, connect a 5v regulated power adaptor to the jack, otherwise
connect your Atari disk drive to your Atari computer (to supply operating power to the
interface). Turn your Atari computer ON first (if connected to the chain), turn your disk
drive ON and finally turn your power adaptor ON. Check the LED on your interface (only
applies to interfaces with enclosure) to verify that it receives power. Also, if you’re
switching between a power adaptor and ATARI power, make sure the disk drive is
disconnected from its power supply for about 10 seconds before it’s turned ON.
2. If your Atari computer is supplying the power, make sure that nothing is running on the
computer that may try to access the drive. It’s best to leave the computer at Basic’s
READY prompt or in self-test mode.
3. Connect the DB9 end of your 10502PC interface to your PC using a straight-through
serial cable. Make note of the serial port you are using, i.e. COM1, COM2 etc. (If you
purchased my external interface without an enclosure, and with a female DB9 connector,
you can skip using a serial cable and insert the interface directly into the male DB9 port
of your PC, you may need to remove the retainer nuts from one of the DB9 connectors
for a proper fit).
4. Start ProSystem for Windows and verify that Drive 1 icon is not grayed out (indicates
that the drive is recognized) . If the icon is grayed out and you receive a message saying
“Could not open COMx! Check settings!” click menu item “File/ProSystem Serial Port
Settings” option and verify that the correct COM port is selected as noted on step 3.

5. Once you’re drive is recognized you are ready to use ProSystem to copy/write disks.
6. You may want to use “Drive Control “options of ProSystem before starting copying disks
to verify that your drive is functioning as expected. You can check things like drive R.P.M
drive capabilities and sector access times from the “Drive Control” menu.

7. If your Atari drive is not recognized by ProSystem go through all of the above steps once
again to double check that you haven’t missed anything, that your serial cable is
connected to the correct COM port, then turn all devices OFF and back ON following the
proper sequence. You may also try disabling/re-enabling the COM port from Windows
Device Manager. Finally select “Rescan Bus” option from the Drive Control menu of the
ProSystem software to re-detect your disk drive.
8. If after completing step 7. you still cannot get your drive to be recognized, and you are
using an external power adaptor to power the interface, first check to see if the LED is lit
if you don’t have a LED or if it’s not lit, check the voltage on your power adaptor. The
voltage must read a minimum of 5v and the power adaptor must be rated at a minimum
of 50ma. Going over 5v by a small margin will not damage your interface (the MC1489N
Quad line receiver IC used in the device can tolerate an input voltage up to 10v DC),
however other voltage sensitive parts in your ATARI drive’s SIO path may be vulnerable
to damage by higher voltages, therefore i DO NOT recommend using a power adaptor
that outputs a voltage greater than 5.1v DC.
9. And finally check the plug on your power supply for a proper fit to the interface’s power
jack. (2.1mm – 0.002”). A loose plug may be the culprit.

SERVICE and WARRANTY
10502PC boards purchased with an enclosure, toggle switch and a built-in SIO Cable come with
a Lifetime Warranty against defects in material and workmanship. Bare boards, boards with an
enclosure but without an attached SIO cable or boards with an external power jack (with or
without an enclosure) don’t come with a warranty, but include a 1/2 hour free tech support (as
detailed below).
The warranty does not cover damage caused by misuse/neglect, disassembling/reassembling of
the enclosure or damage caused by an improper/poor power supply and only valid when a
product failed due to defects in material or workmanship. Please keep your proof of purchase
for your warranty claims.

product and i find that the cause of the problem is my interface, i will replace or repair it at my
expense.
