2014-2015 TEAM INFORMATION MANUAL
Welcome! And thank you for your interest in the Midnight Cheer Athletics All Star Cheer Program!
We are the City of Vancouver’s first and only all star cheerleading program and we’re extremely excited to be
entering our 12th season as one of the top competitive all star cheerleading clubs in BC!
At Midnight Cheer, we have a place for anyone who wants to participate in cheer. Regardless of age or
previous experience, we want YOU to feel welcomed, encouraged, and challenged as a part of our cheer
family! We teach cheerleading skills in a progressive manner and offer a variety of training opportunities
for athletes to improve and advance their current abilities. We are committed to helping every athlete
achieve their personal best!
Being a Midnight Star means learning new skills, perfecting
current ones, and working together as part of a team. It means
sharing a passion for cheerleading, making memories together and
building friendships for life. Whether you’re new to Midnight or a returning
Star, we can’t wait to welcome you for another thrilling season of competitive cheer!
PLEASE NOTE:
We have prepared this manual to help families understand the time and
financial commitments involved with participation in our cheer program.
We encourage families to make an informed decision before committing
to our program; it is important that parents read this whole manual
as you will be asked to sign a contract agreeing to the entire manual as
part of your registration.

OUR GYM & COACHING STAFF
Our training gym is conveniently located near 70th & Granville, in the
Marpole area of Vancouver, and is dedicated to cheerleading, tumbling, and
fitness opportunities. We have over 2,300 square feet of sprung floor, a 30
foot tumble track, a trampoline, and various tumbling and stunting training
equipment!
MIDNIGHT CHEER GYM:
1634 West 75th Avenue
Vancouver, BC V6P 6G2
Gym Line: 604.263.6436
Our coaching staff are all USASF credentialed
and certified to teach stunting, basket tosses,

and tumbling skills. In addition, we require our
tumbling coaches to acquire a minimum of NCCP Level 1 Artistic Gymnastics
certification; many of these coaches have their NCCP Level 2. Safety is our number
one priority and there is always a coach with First Aid Certification in the gym.
Program founder and Director Karen Fraser has been coaching cheerleading in
Vancouver for over 20 years and is a former BC Lions Cheerleader! Our staff
members attend cheerleading clinics and conferences throughout the season and are
committed to staying current with industry coaching methods and standards to better
train our athletes. We truly care about the athletes we work with and are invested in
their individual and team successes!
THE USASF LEVELS
All star cheerleading in North America is governed by the USASF, the United States All-Star Federation. The
USASF provides rules and regulations designed for proper progression of skill acquisition, helping to maintain safe
and fair competitive events for the athletes.
Midnight Cheer is a proud member of the USASF and we build our teams around the levels to set them up for
success throughout the year. Athletes at Midnight are placed on teams primarily according to their age and skill
set in the areas below. In addition, and where applicable, the coaches also consider the athlete’s past
performance including attendance and health, level of motivation and commitment, and overall coach-ability.

TEAMS & PRACTICE SCHEDULES
At Midnight, we offer three types of competitive cheerleading teams:
LEVEL 1 – our Level 1 teams are for athletes who want to experience competitive cheerleading but are either
new to the sport or are still working on their Level 1 tumbling, stunting, and jumping skills. These teams train one
to three times weekly and no experience is required for participation!
LEVEL 2 – our Level 2 teams are for athletes who have Level 2 tumbling skills and want to be further challenged
in competitive cheerleading by more difficult stunting and
jumping. These teams train three times weekly and have
minimum tumbling and stunting requirements.
ELITE – our Elite teams represent the highest level offered at
Midnight in each age category, higher than Level 1. These
teams are for more experienced cheerleaders and gymnasts
and have a higher expectation of time and financial
commitments. They are for athletes who have more cheer
experience, higher-level tumbling and stunting skills, and have
families that can incorporate travel into their schedules as well as place cheer at the top of their extra-curricular
activities. These teams train three times weekly and have minimum tumbling and stunting requirements.
Please find below our 2014-2015 team descriptions and practice schedule. A few things to note:
The age used to determine team placements is the age of the athlete on August 31st, 2014.
The commitment for all team athletes is 10 months, from September to June.
Athletes who wish to be a part of our Elite program in the following 2015-2016 season are required to
attend mandatory summer choreography camps (last 2 weeks of Aug, more details in January 2015) as well
as weekend-friendly team training.
If a practice is cancelled by Midnight due to weather or unforeseen circumstances, it will be re-scheduled
when time and scheduling permit.

TUMBLING/PRIVATES/FLIGHT SCHOOL
In addition to regular team practices, it is important that Midnight Cheer
athletes understand the benefits of taking additional training including tumbling
classes, private lessons, and flight school. Athletes who are motivated to
advance in cheerleading are strongly encouraged to participate in additional
training throughout the year. Coach Karen’s favourite quote: “Formula for
expertise: do it 10,000 times!”
NEW: Athletes on Youth Level 1 and higher teams are required to participate in either
a weekly tumbling class or may choose a weekly private/semi-private lesson (very limited availability). Athletes
on Youth Level 1 and higher teams who choose the weekly tumbling class option have two time slots to choose
from and must participate in both the Fall (Sept-Dec) and Winter (Jan-spring break) sessions; the Spring (after
spring break-Jun) session is optional/encouraged.

class during the other time slot of the same level is allowed once per session – contact Midnight to arrange.
The Fall Session of tumble classes will begin September 4th. A class schedule will be provided in September
and available on our website as certain classes will not be offered some weeks due to Midnight winter/spring
shows, competition commitments, or holidays!
Flight School
This class is for flyers who want to perfect/advance their flying technique as well as learn new skills. The price
is higher as we provide 3 stunters and a coach to no more than 5 athletes.
Privates
1-hour privates and semi-privates can be booked during the following times, dependent upon the gym’s and
requested coach’s availability – contact sarah@midnightcheer.com to arrange:
Monday through Thursday, from 3:45 – 4:45 pm

CROSSOVERS
Crossovers are athletes who train and compete with more than one team. Being a crossover accelerates an
athlete’s potential to learn and become a high-level cheerleader; it is a unique opportunity that many of our
athletes have benefitted from dramatically. Athletes may be considered as a crossover to a second team
depending on what that athlete can contribute to the specific needs of that second team. Coaches will assess
each situation individually.
Crossovers must be prepared for additional training hours and crossover training fees of 25% of their lower cost
team’s monthly training tuition, as well as any incidental team fees such as skills camp/choreography costs.
Additional competition fees will be added to your athlete statement at the end of the competitive season as they
vary from event to event, but are lower than regular team competition fees.
INDIVIDUALS & GROUP STUNT
Anyone wishing to showcase an individual/duo/trio routine or be a part of a group
stunt team must do so in addition to their regular team practices. The individuals
and group stunt teams that represent Midnight Cheer at competitions should
highlight the best all-around athletes from within each age group at our gym.
Individual cheerleaders and Group Stunt teams (consisting of 4 – 5 girls from a
particular age division) MUST be current training members of a Midnight Cheer
team in order to represent the club.
Practice schedules for both Individual cheerleaders and Group Stunt teams may be booked based on the
availability of their requested coach. Pricing will depend on the training/competition schedule coordinated and
will include costs for training, choreography, music, and competition fees. Please contact
karen@midnightcheer.com for more information.
UNIFORM & TEAM APPAREL
All competitive team athletes, except our Tiny team athletes, are required to have the following items:
Competition Uniform: bodyliner, skirt w/attached spankies, competition bow
Practice Wear: Program t, program shorts, program sports bra (Jr/Sr teams only, optional for Mini/Youth)
Team Wear *new items*: Team bow (all teams), team sports bra/tank top (Jr/Sr teams)
Cheer shoes and make-up kit
Pricing for the above items will be available in September and at the Size and Swap!
PLEASE NOTE: We require all athletes to wear their team training apparel to all team practices for several
reasons: 1) teams look and feel (psychologically) like teams when members are wearing the same clothing, 2)
from the coaches’ perspective, when watching choreographed movement, individual clothing can be distracting to
the eye, 3) wearing a bow during practices gives the athlete the feeling they will have when wearing it while
performing in their competition routine, although they do not have to wear the actual competition bow.
Sizing for all of the items above will be done on:

COMPETITION SCHEDULE
This is a Preliminary Schedule and a CONFIRMED Schedule will be communicated in September, as changes to
these schedules are not always within our control. In addition, please note the following:
All scheduled competitions for your team are mandatory. Colds and flus are a normal part of life and are not
acceptable reasons to miss scheduled cheer events. Athletes are required to attend events despite illness;
adjustments to the routine will be made to accommodate the sick athlete. Athletes who do not attend scheduled
cheer events negatively affect the hard work of their entire team. Missing a scheduled event for any reason other
than hospitalization could result in removal from the team’s routine.

All athletes 11 & under are required to have a parent or guardian present with them at all competitions. If a
parent/guardian is not available to attend, then it is the responsibility of that parent to find a suitable
chaperone for their child for that competition.
All athletes are expected to stay in full uniform and be present at each competition until after the
awards for your team/level have ended. Leaving a competition early is NOT acceptable; we expect all
athletes to cheer on other Midnight teams and show support for one another. In addition, we expect to be
able to take full team pictures with awards after the presentation. Leaving early may mean not getting your
medal/trophy or being absent for your team’s photo.
Midnight Cheer athletes are expected to show support and respect for both our own Midnight teams as
well as other programs, especially while in the public eye; this includes competitions/events/internet activity.

2014-2015 Information Manual
RULES & REGULATIONS - GENERAL
Please read the following information carefully and ask a Midnight Cheer staff member if you have any
questions! These Rules & Regulations are here to provide you and your family with an understanding of the
expectations that come with your participation as a Midnight Cheer program member.
GYM ETIQUETTE & SAFETY
Only registered athletes are permitted in the training area. Parents must ask permission before entering the
training floor.
No use of equipment is permitted without the supervision of a Midnight coach.
No stunting or tumbling is permitted in or around the gym without the supervision of a Midnight coach.
Parents are not permitted to spot or assist tumbling and/or stunting and it is not recommended that parents
or friends assist these types of skills at home without certified supervision and instruction.
Spectators are not permitted in the gym except for the last 15 minutes of practice ONLY. No
parent/siblings/friends are allowed on the gym floor/training area unless invited; a viewing area is provided.
Food, beverages, and gum are not permitted on the training floor.
Cell phones must be kept on ‘silent’ mode during training; parents are encouraged to phone the gym if they
need to contact their child in an emergency situation. Athletes who do not comply with this rule will have
their cell phones taken away during their training time.
Our facility is nut-free.
Midnight Cheer is not responsible for lost/stolen valuables at the gym. To avoid disappointment, please
leave valuables at home and label your items.
PROPER ATTIRE
For safety hair must be pulled away from the face & off the neck, cheer shoes worn, & absolutely no jewelry
or finger nails past the tips of your fingers as these can harm others. Do NOT be surprised if a coach pulls
out a nail clipper to shorten hazardous nails!
Athletes are required to wear their Midnight Cheer training gear at team practices and when representing
Midnight at competitions, fundraisers, and events.
Athletes are welcome to wear alternate clothing items (including cheer event clothing) to any tumble classes
and/or private lessons.
There is to be absolutely NO SMOKING/ALCOHOL/DRUGS when in uniform, at a cheerleading event, or when
representing Midnight Cheer in any way.
SPORTSMANSHIP & RESPECT
At practices, events, and competitions, both athletes and parents are expected to represent Midnight Cheer
in a professional manner by displaying good sportsmanship, supporting Midnight and other teams and
programs, and being positive role models for others. It is essential that there be respect among teammates,
parents, coaches, and members of other programs. Any disrespect toward others in person or on social
media will not be tolerated.
Athletes will accept team awards respectfully no matter what the expectation or outcome.
COMMUNICATION & CONCERNS
We will do our best to ensure proper communication through our website and emails. We encourage you to
stay actively involved in the communication process by checking your email often and our website regularly
as it will contain important information. We also request that parents attend all scheduled parent meetings.
In order to provide the most positive experience possible for all of our athletes, we ask that parents not
discuss their concerns with or in front of the athletes. A scheduled time with the team’s coach to discuss any
concerns can be arranged in private.

RULES & REGULATIONS – TEAM ATHLETES
ATTENDANCE
General
Please be prepared and on time for all practices. On time means that you are on the floor and ready to
practice the minute your scheduled practice begins. This means that you need to arrive at the gym 10-15
minutes early to change shoes/clothes, put your hair up, get taped, etc.
ALL TEAM PRACTICES ARE MANDATORY. Unless determined by your Doctor to be contagious, you
should still attend team practice (sitting out on the side) and observe/learn even if you don‘t feel well
enough to actively participate. If an athlete becomes sick unexpectedly and must miss a practice, a personal
phone call directly to the gym or call/text to the athlete‘s cheer coach MUST be made as early as possible.
Think about it: if every team member were allowed to miss one practice, we would have 15 practices (almost
two months!!) without full team attendance. We cannot do our job as coaches if we are unable to work with
the entire team at every practice. Therefore, practices are mandatory.
Coaches have the right to remove a team member from participating at a competition if they miss a team
practice directly leading up to that competition.
Time Management/Extra-Curricular Events
Please manage your school time effectively, as this is your first priority. Cheer is an extra-curricular activity
and we believe that all athletes are capable of performing well in school while still keeping their commitment
to their Midnight Cheer team. It’s about prioritizing.
Regular doctor & dentist appointments, concert/theatre opportunities, and social party plans must not conflict
with the schedule of events and practices. Please schedule these appointments/opportunities/plans on nonpractice days. They are not acceptable reasons for jeopardizing the success of the entire team.
Withholding Cheer as a Punishment
Midnight Cheer families must agree that they will not withhold participation in cheer as a punishment tool,
as they would use taking away TV, the internet, or going out with friends. This is because every member of
a team depends on every other member’s participation. A parent withholding participation at Midnight
Cheer as a punishment negatively affects the whole team, and ultimately the program, not just their child.
If there are any concerns with behavior outside of cheer, please contact your child’s coach to coordinate a
solution that will not affect the whole team.
Family Vacations
It is important for overall team success that vacations not be scheduled during the main competition season
(September to mid-April) except during gym closure dates and specified training breaks such as Winter and
Spring. Athletes and families need to understand the effect that these absences have on the rest of the team
and that Midnight Cheer coaches must prioritize the team’s productivity needs over the absent athlete’s
desires when put in this position. Absences may result in the missing athlete returning to a new
position/choreography/placement in the routine. In these situations, an “ABSENCE REQUEST FORM”
(available in September from the office & on our website) must be filled out and handed in to the coaches at
least 14 days prior to the absence.
Page | 10
Midnight Cheer Athletics
2014-2015 Information Manual
RULES & REGULATIONS – TEAM ATHLETES
ATTENDANCE cont’d…
School Trips/Events
Please fill out an “ABSENCE REQUEST FORM” and hand it in to the coaches at least 14 days prior to the
absence with a copy of the notice from the school explaining the trip. We understand you do not have
control over the scheduling of these trips/events!
Illness & Injuries
If you are injured (due to cheerleading or otherwise) and this injury will affect your participation in
cheerleading, you are still expected to attend your team practices (sitting out on the side and/or doing what
you can) to keep up with what is being taught. In addition, if an injury keeps you from participating in
practice for an extended period of time (longer than a week), Midnight requires a Doctor’s note or a note
from your parent BEFORE you return to training specifying that you are physically cleared to return.
All injuries must be reported to your coach immediately, no matter how insignificant the injury seems and
whether or not it is cheer-related.
TRANSITIONS
Midnight Cheer may add/move athletes to different teams at any time during the season based on these
criteria: attendance, maturity, skill-level, parental support and financial ability. Transitions of this nature are
always at the coaches’ discretion but are never made without much discussion and consideration first.
EARLY TERMINATION
The Midnight Cheer Program is a 10-month commitment. An athlete quitting mid-season causes multiple
problems for their team and the program in general. When someone quits, instead of their team spending
their limited practice time on improving, that time is spent re-choreographing and re-learning the routine to
fill in the missing spots. It is a severe setback on the entire team that has worked so hard and is fulfilling
their 10-month commitment to their team. It is unfair that the whole team must suffer because someone
cannot fulfill their commitment.
Early termination does not mean that your payments end early; if you choose to leave the program
at any time during the year, you are still required to continue your monthly payment amounts until June.
Your monthly payment amounts are made up of both monthly training fees AND pro-rated competition fees;
Midnight has already paid these competition fees out in full on your behalf in advance of the competition
season and must be reimbursed in full by June regardless of whether you leave the program early or not.
Athletes may not train concurrently at Midnight Cheer and another all-star cheerleading facility in BC; if you
choose to participate in team training or regular classes at another all-star cheerleading facility, you are

needs and requirements, and coaches’ salaries. All additional fees are immediately paid out to the competition
companies, uniform suppliers, choreographers, music editors, etc. Therefore, there are ZERO refunds on all

themselves appropriately with their peers/coaches and to actively participate in all of the program activities.
Athletes who do not demonstrate these abilities may be asked to withdraw from the program.
6. Athletes are welcome to participate in their cheer practices only when their accounts are up-to-date and all
required payments have been arranged; this will be strictly enforced.
7. An athlete’s account must be in good standing in order to participate in additional activities such as privates,

COMMITMENT FORM
I ____________________ (name of parent/guardian) have thoroughly reviewed the Midnight Cheer Athletics
2014-2015 Team Information Manual and agree to all the rules, regulations, policies, procedures and financial
commitments involved with my child ____________________ being a member of Midnight Cheer Athletics.
Specifically we have made note of the following:
Initials
The commitment for all team athletes is 10 months, from September to June.
Athletes who wish to be a part of our Level 2/Elite programs in the 2015-2016 season are
required to attend mandatory summer choreography camps (last 2 weeks of Aug, more details in
early 2015) as well as weekend-friendly summer team training.
Athletes on Youth level 1 and higher teams are required to participate in weekly tumbling training
throughout the competitive season.
A competition uniform and Midnight practice wear is required for all team athletes; sizing for
these items as well as shoes will be done on Saturday, September 13th from 1-5 pm. A
second sizing day is scheduled for Saturday, October 18th.
All scheduled competitions for my team(s) are mandatory except in the event of hospitalization.
All athletes are expected to stay in full uniform and be present at each competition until after
the awards for their team/level have ended.
All regularly scheduled team practices between September and the last competition in April are
MANDATORY. This is vital for each team to have every opportunity to be successful.
Early termination does not mean that my payments end early.
