November 8: CIS Cross Country Championships, St John’s, NL November 29: Canadian Cross Country Championships, Vancouver, BC O OC CTTO OB BE ER R 22001144 WHAT’S HAPPENING THIS MONTH SUCCESS STORIES Congratulations to Jessica Furlan (Regina), who placed 7th in the senior women’s 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:16.51 at the IAAF Continental Cup, September 14 in Marrakech, Morocco. Congratulations to Simon Bairu (Regina), who recently announced his retirement from competition as he moves into a career in Nike’s Sports Marketing Department. During his prolific career, Simon was a collegiate standout with the University of Wisconsin Badgers where he won the men’s individual cross country title twice and team title once; Simon won seven national cross country titles and two national titles on the track (5000m in 2009, 10000m in 2010) during his career. Simon placed 12th at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships the best Canadian performance of all-time; He won three Canadian 10km road titles (2006, 2008, 2009); He qualified for the 2007 World Championships in the 10000m; Simon holds the Canadian record for the 10000m (27:23.63). Personal bests: 1500m – 3:45.25 (2007) 3000m – 7:49.10 (2007) 5000m – 13:25.91 (2007) 10000m – 27:23.63 (2010) Half Marathon – 1:02.08 (2010) TIMEX series results: Women’s series point winner – Danielle Thiel (Regina); Men’s series point winner – Johnathan Ell (Regina); 10km Road Provincial Champions (July 13, Saskatoon) are Jodi Souter (Pleasantdale) & James Funk (Saskatoon); National 10km Championships (September 20, Toronto, ON): Women’s Team 3rd place (Jodi Souter, Brittany Elliot, Laura Desjardins), Mixed Team 3rd (Jodi Souter, Laura Desjardins, Iain Fyfe, James Funk) Congratulations to Lyle Sanderson (Saskatoon), it was recently confirmed that the prestigious Athletics Canada Award for Outstanding Combined Events Athlete of the Year will be renamed the Lyle Sanderson Award Congratulations to Kelly Wiebe (Swift Current), will compete for Team Canada – 2014 Chiba Ekiden Road Race, November 24 in Japan. The event is a mixed gender relay where men and women alternate legs to cover the marathon distance of 42.195 km Approved rule changes for 2015 National Championship outdoor events: Youth Boys: 400mH will replace 300mH; 5,000m race walk added; decathlon will replace octathlon Youth Girls: 400mH will replace 300mH; 5,000m race walk replaces 3,000m race walk Junior Men: 10,000m added but held at a separate time with senior 10,000m Junior Women: 5,000m added; 3,000m steeplechase replaces 2,000m steeplechase General Rule: athletes may compete a maximum of one age-category older than their age-category at Athletics Canada Championships; Exception for male youth aged athletes may NOT compete in Junior men’s 10,000m event; Rule does not apply to Masters competitors/events Newsletter Submissions Please send us information on upcoming events, workshops, clinics, or stories about our membership for us to publish.
