NMP-25-2014: “Accelerating the uptake of
nanotechnologies, advanced materials or advanced
manufacturing and processing technologies by SMEs”
The proposed project aims at integrating European SMEs and Russian owners of Basalt technology, with
the purpose to develop a feasibility study for assessing the technological/practical, as well as economic
viability of using Basalt for a new generation of sustainable, high-end and low-cost applications of
innovative composites manufactured by this rock. The Basalt material is not a “young” material, despite
of this, the fibre-based applications is possible to realize with this rock are extremely promising for
several end-uses in the composites sector, at the moment looking for innovative material solutions with
new features to be exploited on the market - i.e., petrochemical industry, construction and building,
marine applications. At the present, just a handful of countries in the world, including Russia, Ukraine,
China, Canada and USA, possess the production technology for the fabrication of continuous fibres with
Basalt of interesting quality and reproducibility for the market. The main reason of this technological
delay on Basalt is not in a crisis of the demand, which is growing instead, but in the low production
activity by Companies, and in the quality that seems to have problems in reproducibility. For various
reasons, industrial producers are not able to organize the production of superior Basalt fibres on relevant
scales. Market is ready to place orders for Basalt-derived products, but only having assurances of high
quality, reproducibility and supply capacity. The overall project strategy, planned on four years for the
phase 1 (6M), 2 (24M) and 3 (18M), will be carried out with two principal key objectives intended for
addressing the business opportunity presented at best. In the first, cost-effective CBFs (continuous Basalt
fibres) with superior quality and two derived products - i.e., rovings and chopped fibres - will be realized
on a pilot scale plant (700 tonnes/year) built in Russia - where at the moment is present the technology
and the raw materials - in joint partnership with EU Companies and expressly targeted on the EU market.
Key results for this objective: a. obtaining a final production price inferior with respect of that of
comparable products derived from the Glass technology, but with superior performance, extended life
and end-uses; b. ensuring the reproducibility of the Basalt technology, shifting the production from the
step 2.0, present at the moment in several production plants worldwide, towards the next generation of
production, 3.0 (standard and replicable technology of continuous basalt fibre - CBF - market-oriented).
In the second, the produced continuous fibres and the derived products (fabrics, mats and tapes), will be
tested in the specific applications for the key sectors envisaged above, to have a pre-commercialisation
of the final products within the end of the phase 2 for the EU market.

NETEFRES
NEw TEchnical FibRES (for non-clothing applications)
NMP-22-2015: “Fibre-based materials for non-clothing
applications”
The project aims at analyse, develop and test material solutions starting from two very interesting and
promising sources of fibres. The first is a rock, the Basalt, and will give rise to fibre-based composites to
be used in petrochemical industry, construction and building and marine applications for structural and
protective end-uses. The second is a naturally-derived biopolymer, the Keratin, obtained by waste
feathers and exhausted wool, to be used in green and materials chemistry applications for the
separation, recovery and purification of biological or biosynthetic products, in biomedical end-uses for
tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, wound healing, drug delivery, and in technical devices
designed for safety purposes.
1) BASALT: between all the fibres used in the composites industry, that coming from Basalt is a
unique product, first because is derived from volcanic lava deposits - i.e., is of natural origin. The
fibres are manufactured directly from the basaltic rock in a single-melt process, and comprising
only single-ingredient raw materials melts, i.e., with no hazardous chemical additives - e.g.,
oxide boron (B2O3), essential additive for the production of a good quality fibreglass.
Furthermore, the production process is completely sustainable, with low energy required - only
5kWh/kg of electricity - and low fabrication costs: that of energy (gas and electricity), is the
major, it covers an half of all the production costs. Basalt fibres are superior to other chemicallyderived fibres (i.e., carbon, aramid and glass), in terms of thermal stability, heat, sound and
electrical insulation, resistance to fire, chemically active and radiative environments, damages
due to vibrations, and for the overall durability. Furthermore, the fibre can be completely
recycled in producing new fibres, without degradation in performance.
2) KERATIN: as original raw material, Keratin can be used in the development of novel fibrous
composites for a variety of uses. Being a very effective naturally-derived biopolymer it can play a
fundamental role in materials chemistry for its numerous functional properties and
biodegradability. For its intrinsic bioactivity and biocompatibility it can be used for developing
materials for the biomedical sector. In addition, Keratins are capable to form self-assembled
structures that regulate cellular recognition and behaviour for applications in tissue engineering,
regenerative medicine, wound healing and drug delivery. Modified Keratins are also very
important in green chemistry, where they can be functionalized in biosorption active materials
for their selective binding features to link with heavy metals and toxic molecules. All the sources
of raw materials from which extract the Keratins are renewable and already present in the waste

and disposal process of e.g., textile industry (i.e., wool), and poultry meat sector (i.e., feathers).
The use of these sources also would provide effective solutions regarding large amounts of
wastes from these industrial sectors, especially considering that, apart from a minor
consumption of these types of wastes (e.g., for animal feed), disposal of the remaining bulk
poses a significant environmental threat.

Fibre-based equipment for sport and leisure
NMP-22-2015 <Fiber-based materials for non-clothing
applications>
This project aims to develop and integrate new fibre-based materials in the sport sector, mainly addressing to
challenging tools and training equipment and environments.
Textiles and fibres will be integrated into innovative composites, to produce athletic gears, and their
improvements in performance (such as flexibility, strength, durability) will be proved. Furthermore smart textiles
will be integrated into training equipment or sport tools, to monitor and improve the athlete performance and to
check body stress and attitudes. For example electronic sensors (smart textile pads, floor coverings, etc.) could
enable the collection of spatial data, while pressure/chemical sensors, integrated into flexible substrates, could
enable the monitoring of physical parameters.
The targets are both extremely sectorial and widely spread sport and leisure equipment, for high level
competitions or everyday use, to maximise the societal impact of the action. In this perspective the outcomes of
the proposal could be exploited also for medical and wellbeing sector, with their integration into rehabilitation
tools and equipment.

Customized Knitted Burn Wound Medical Textiles
FoF 10-2015: Manufacturing of Custom Made Parts for
Personalized Products
The wound care sector is one of the most advanced in the medical industry, with a massive
global demand from patients suffering from wounds, burns, and various diseases.
Ensuring satisfactory wound healing is often difficult due to the dynamic nature of the skin,
requiring fulfilment of multiple objectives at different stages of the healing process(1). Burn
wound is the central problem in the burn patient, and successful management and timely
closure of the burn wound is essential to survival. The prevention of burn wound infection is
certainly critical in this process. Historically, invasive burn wound infection, or “burn wound
sepsis”, was the leading cause of death in burn patients (2). The idea of the MEDFIT-K
proposal is to develop and integrate advanced design and manufacturing small scale
technology line towards customized knitted medical textiles production, for burn wound first
treatment and wound dressing, within the hospital shop floor. MEDFIT-K aims at developing
a research & innovation program towards the design and development of flexible small scale
knitted patches production unit for burn wound textiles, with customized fitting and
personalized wound healing properties, which should be operated within the hospital
environment.

Mass Customised textile design and manufacturing
FoF-10-2015: Manufacturing of custom made parts for personalised
products
Innovative production and supply chain concepts have to be carried out by implementing new machines
and processes. In most cases the data transfer from designing the individual textile pattern (eg. by the
customer) to the knitting machine control is challenging due to a missing integration of seamless data
transfer into the process chain. By using e.g. the internet of things and/or services and new simulation
approaches the connection of interfaces between design and manufacturing can be improved. The more
flexible the individual product-service data can be transformed to manufacturing, the more flexible the
product is realisable. Therefore, a system which enables to gain the customer´s requirements regarding
the product and transfer these directly to corresponding machine parameters along the entire process
chain will be developed. In addition, a production guide system is to be developed in order to manage
the control production along the value-added chain.

MULTIWATER
Multi Sector On Line System For Smart Water Management
WATER-1b-2015
Multiwater - Multi Sector On-line Smart Water Management System, aims to develop a multiparameter water monitoring system, for safe water reduction, recycling and reuse that can
be applied to multiple industrial sectors. The project implementation will be focus on Textile
Industry and then exploited to other business activities.
The water management system (Multiwater) will include a monitoring and controlling
scheme, which will comprise a sensor network placed in water conducts of the industrial
process, and those sensors will be connected to a central computer that will provide data
related to water parameters allowing a smart and safe decision on water destination or use.
On-line sensor systems will measure continuously several parameters, like pH, temperature,
colour, turbidity or conductivity on wastewaters streams and the software program will
decide if the stream can be reuse or used as fresh water in another process and also decide
about the heat recovery of wastewaters streams. This system will also decide about the
water quantity needed in a certain productive step, optimizing that industrial process. The
smart decision aiming a safe reuse of process water, from the point of view of process and
product quality will be based on existing research knowledge on water contaminants
influence at different concentrations on the industrial processes where that water is to be
reused. This proposal is built upon the original Multiwater proposal already submitted in
2011 but now reviewed and oriented to this new topic.
