Monthly Review
To Your Health by Dr. Daniel Scarbrough
It’s that me of the year. The leaves again are turning and the crisp cool air is ushering in the Fall season. This should remind us to protect ourselves
from a seasonal problem – the flu. A person contracts the flu from a virus. Symptoms include fague, muscle ache, joint pain, loss of appete,
headache, cough or fever. For some people the flu lasts only a few days, but for others it can be very harmful, leaving them severely ill, requiring
hospitalizaon and even death. From 1976 to 2007 it is esmated that 49,000 people died from the flu. Older paents are affected most by the flu’s
complicaons. The flu shot is an easy way to protect yourself from the flu and its complicaons. Between the first of October and mid-November is
the best me to get your vaccine. A2er taking the flu vaccine you will build anbodies in the body in about two weeks which will help provide
protecon against the flu. However, you must have a shot every year because the virus causing the flu mutates and changes each year and then a
new vaccine has to be developed each year.
The seasonal flu vaccine protects against flu viruses that research indicates will be most common during the upcoming season. Tradional flu
vaccines are made to protect against three flu viruses but this season the vaccines are made to protect against four flu viruses – called a quadrivalent
vaccine. Everyone from age 6 months up should receive the flu vaccine. However, high-risk paents: i.e. especially healthcare workers, children less
than 5 years of age, adults older than 65, nursing home residents, pregnant women and paents with comorbid disease such as heart, lung, kidney
and diabec problems, and those on treatment for cancer and HIV should definitely get a flu shot.
One fear is that the flu shot will give you the flu. The shot is safe, but one in four people may noce a li9le redness, tenderness or swelling. The shot
is easy to obtain and is free for Medicare beneficiaries. So, please GET YOUR FLU SHOT!
