Mark Aulisio, PhD is a Professor
in the Department of Bioethics at
Case Western Reserve University,
where he serves as Director of the
Bioethics PhD Program. Dr. Aulisio
is also the Director of the Center for
Biomedical Ethics of the MetroHealth
System. He has authored over 70
articles and book chapters on clinical
bioethics, ethics consultation, organ
donation and transplant, double effect
and related areas and is a sought after speaker nationally
and internationally. In 2009, Dr. Aulisio was honored with
the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities’ (ASBH)
Distinguished Service Award for having helped to lead three
national projects that resulted in Core Competencies for
Health Care Ethics Consultation (1998), Status of Bioethics and
Medical Humanities Graduate Training Programs in the North
America Report (2002), and Improving Competencies in Ethics
Consultation: An Education Guide (2009) respectively. Dr.
Aulisio also has extensive international bioethics experience
which includes serving: as PI on clinical bioethics projects with
colleagues at Kyoto University (2003-2004) and the University
of Tokyo (2004-2006); as a co-investigator at the University of
Paris, he led an 11 nation project on bioethics education (20062008); as co-investigator on a bioethics and citizenship project
with Spanish colleagues at the University of Salamanca (20102011); and as a contributor to the Canadian Blood Services
sponsored forum on the possibility of developing a National
Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplant Program (2011).
The Cuyahoga County Conference on Aging is co-convened by the
Cuyahoga County Division of Senior and Adult Services (DSAS)
and The MetroHealth System. We consistently attract nearly 300
attendees (social workers, counselors, nurses and nursing home
administrators) and will celebrate 20 years this year!

Continuing Professional Education
The Cuyahoga County Division of Senior and Adult Services
(DSAS) has applied for 5.5 hours of continuing education credits
for counselors and social workers. These credits may also be
applied to meet nursing licensure requirements. DSAS is an
approved provider of the Ohio Counselor and Social Worker
Board (RCS089801).
Cuyahoga County’s Division of Senior and Adult Services has
applied for 5.0 credit hours for nursing home administrators
through the Board of Executives of Long-Term Services &
Supports (BELTSS). Continuing Education Units will only
be given to those nursing home administrators who are in
attendance for the entire conference. The Division of Senior and
Adult Services is a limited provider.
The MetroHealth System (OH-087/050115) is an approved
provider of continuing nursing education by the Ohio Nurses
Association (OBN-001-91), an accredited approver by the
American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on
Accreditation.

“First Do No Harm v. Provider Comfort Always”
This session will outline the pharmacologic characteristics
that make a “controlled drug” a “controlled drug”; compare
& contrast “low risk use,” “misuse,” “abuse,” and addictive
behaviors as they relate to controlled drug use; list the
differential diagnosis to be considered when faced with aberrant
drug taking behavior; and describe clinical interventions to
different causes of aberrant behavior that are consistent with
avoiding harm, as well as providing relief when it is safe to do so.
“Performance Indicators: Exciting & Necessary
This workshop will assist participants in determining what
performance measures are, how national benchmarks affect
local measurements and how to use them to guide staff
performance, client outcomes, funding, planning and evaluation
processes. In addition, participants will hear how the Division
of Senior and Adult Services has been using performance
measures to guide their work and how the Greater Cleveland
National Alliance on Mental Illness developed community
outreach initiatives using national and local data.

“Empowering to Choose: Geriatric Patients
& Decision Making”
“3 D’s of the Elderly: Delirium, Depression, & Dementia”
Delirium, Dementia and Depression are common diagnoses seen
and often misdiagnosed in the aging population. Attendees at
this session will acquire an understanding of the differences in
diagnosis of Delirium, Dementia and Depression in both healthy
and hospitalized older adults. Participants will also be able to
verbalize evidenced based management strategies for treatment
of the 3 D’s.
This session will provide an understanding of “sliding scale”
versus “background” approaches to decision capacity, the
implications of each approach for patient autonomy, and the
major challenges for surrogate decision makers. Finally, we will
discuss possible ways of addressing these challenges.

In this session, participants will learn about the different best
practices in providing care to persons, particularly elders, who
are working to manage a mental illness. We will review different
tools and modes of practice useful in treating and managing
mental illness. We will also have a case study and discuss how
these best practices have worked in the past.

“LGBT Elders: Challenges to Successful Aging”
This session will provide an understanding of challenges to
successful aging for LGBT elders including: health status,
coming out and self-disclosure, insurance coverage, financial
situations, living situations and family, social and community
supports, elder care/nursing home discrimination, end-oflife care, and the invisibility in LGBT communities and aging
programs which exists. Finally it will address ways in which
various communities have improved elder services for aging
LGBT populations.
