The famous geographer Strabo mentions the port of Heraclium in his Geography, a name that was retained until 824 AD, when Crete was taken over by the Saracens. They repaired the Byzantine walls and built additional fortifications, as well as a moat, and gave the city the Arabic name of Rabd al Khandak. The Byzantines reclaimed it in 961 AD and in 1204 sold it to the Venetians who completely rebuilt the city and added massive fortifications, many of which are still intact, including the small harbor fortress known as “Koules”. Under Venetian rule the city flourished and attracted many scholars and artists who came to study at St Catherine’s university. It was the time of the famous Cretan School of painting, when one of the island’s most famous sons emerged, the painter Domenikos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco. After a 22-year siege, in 1669 the Venetians handed over the city to the Ottomans who controlled it for the next two centuries. It was finally incorporated into the Kingdom of Greece in 1913 and Heraklion, the city of Hercules, regained its ancient name.
