The primary organ at St.
Helena’s is modern yet reminiscent
of the organ-building practices used
during the 17th and 18th centuries
in Europe. This fine instrument is
an example of the pinnacle of organ
craftsmanship, a period known as
the “golden age” of organ building
and organ music, reached in Europe
between 1600 and 1750.
Three centuries later, the legacy
of excellent organ building
continues to elevate the spirit.
Installed in 1985 by Taylor & Boody Organ Builders of Staunton,
Va., the two-manual organ has 19 stops and more than 1,150
pipes housed in a beautifully crafted oak case.

The organ-building firm of Jaeckel Inc. of Duluth,
Minnesota, built the four-stop portative organ. The organ
features mechanical key (suspended) and stop actions.
Bellows are built in, and the blower is in a removable case.
Front pipes are made of hammered lead. The cabinet is of
solid mahogany. Natural keys are of ivory (from recycled
keyboards). Turned knobs are of rosewood with inserted
hand-lettered porcelain nameplates. Equal temperament, 54note compass.

About the Musicians:
Friday, October 3
Matthew Michael Brown is
Director of Music and Organist at
First United Methodist Church of
Salisbury, N.C., where he oversees a
sacred music program affiliated with
the Royal School of Church Music
in America. He holds degrees from
the North Carolina School of the
Arts and the Eastman School of Music, with further studies
at the GOArt Organ Center in Göteborg, Sweden, and the
International Summer Organ Conservatoire in Paris. Mr.
Brown garnered top prizes in competitions sponsored by the
Music Teacher's National Association and the Atlanta Chapter
of the American Guild of Organists. This season he will present
a solo recital in Westminster Abbey that will include the world
première of work by North Carolina composer Kenneth
Frazelle. His performances have been broadcast nationally on
With Heart and Voice and American Public Media’s Pipedreams,
featuring his 2009 recording Collage. He is Dean of the
Charlotte Chapter of the American Guild of Organists.

Friday, October 10
John Stender is a second-year graduate student at the
Indiana University Jacobs School of Music pursuing an M.M.
in organ and sacred music. He is a student of Bruce Neswick.
In 2012 he graduated from Luther
College in Decorah, Iowa, with a
B.A. in organ and church music and
religion. He traveled to Namibia and
South Africa with a chamber choir
for choral and cultural exchange, and
participated in a monthlong French
organ seminar. While at IU he has
performed movements from Olivier
Messiaen's La Nativité du Seigneur
and Les Corps Glorieux in studio recitals, was featured in
Pipedreams’ “2013 Bach’s Birthday Bash,” and traveled to the
Pacific Northwest for a departmental “Organ Crawl” where
he offered movements from Messiaen's L'Ascension and sang
with the Cathedral Choir at St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral.
He currently serves as Minister of Music at Servants of Christ
Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Indianapolis.

Luca Pollastri graduated in
Organ and Organ Composition
from G. Frescobaldi Conservatoire
in Ferrara, Italy. He earned a Degree
in Organ, summa cum laude, at
the Conservatoire under Maestro
Francesco Tasini and Maestro
Vincenzo Ninci, and a Degree in Harpsichord, summa cum
laude, under Maestro Marina Scaioli. At the Haute Ecole
de Musique in Geneva, Switzerland, he earned a Master of
Arts in Music Performance, major in Concert Performance
(Organ). Titular organist of Fidenza Cathedral, he was invited
to play at Notre-Dame in Paris on its 850th anniversary, and
also in London, the U.S, Sweden, Switzerland, and Germany.
One of his original compositions was selected as the official
international hymn of the Children's Jubilee (2000) while
another was chosen as the official hymn of the 33rd Franciscan
March (2013). He is the conductor of the Pueri et Juvenes
Cantores della Cattedrale di Fidenza.

Emanuele Cardi is organist
and choirmaster at the Ghilardi
and Carli organs of St. Maria della
Speranza Church in Battipaglia –
two of the best-known instruments
in the contemporary organ-building
school. Dr. Cardi received his
diploma with honors in Organ Performance and Organ
Composition with Wijnand van de Pol at the F. Morlacchi
Conservatory in Perugia. He studied Baroque and Renaissance
organ repertoire and obtained the Academic Degree in Organ
Performance with honors, as well as diplomas in Harpsichord,
Piano and Choir conducting. A student of 16th- and 17thcentury Neapolitan organ-building and music, he teaches
classes on Renaissance and Baroque organ music and serves on
juries in international organ competitions. He has performed
in most countries of Europe, the United States, Brazil
and Uruguay, playing the world's best-known organs. He
teaches Organ and Organ Composition at the Statal Music
Conservatory in Cosenza and collaborates with the Centro
di Musica Antica Pietà de’Turchini on the Youth Baroque
Ensemble.

Johan Hermans has performed throughout the world,
including Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris; the Cathedrals of
Canterbury and Lincoln in England; the Cadet Chapel at
the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, N.Y; two concert
tours in South America and festival
performances in Ballarat, Australia.
He has made recordings for radio
and TV broadcasting corporations
worldwide, including MotetteUrsina, Sony Belgium and Pavane
Records. His repertoire includes
works from the 14th to the 21st
centuries. His recording of the
newly restored historic organ of
Hasselt Cathedral was published in the CD series “Flemish
Organ Treasures.” He studied at the Lemmens Institute in
Louvain and the Royal Conservatory of Liège, Belgium,
receiving the Diplôme Supérieur (Doctor of Musical Arts)
in Organ Performance. He teaches Organ Performance and
Keyboard Harmony at the Municipal Academy of Genk
and the Conservatory of Hasselt, Belgium, where he is Civic
Organist and Cathedral Organist of St. Quintinus Cathedral.
