Man dies after
stepping into
traffic
A man injured when he stepped
into the path of a moving car on
Hallandale Beach Boulevard Saturday has died.
The incident happened at 9:31
p.m. in the 4800 block of West
Hallandale Beach Boulevard in
Pembroke Park when the man
stepped into the left lane of eastbound traffic.
He was hit by a 2006 Hyundai
Elantra driven by 39-year-old
Benjamin Sharpe of Hallandale.
The pedestrian died of his injuries early Thursday morning.
The victim is a known homeless person in the area. Witnesses
told Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide investigators that he
was drinking alcohol before the
incident.
Investigators have not yet notified his next of kin and are withholding his name.

An elderly veteran on his way
to a V.A. clinic, was fatally struck
as he attempted to cross the road
in the early morning.
Broward Sheriff ’s Office Traffic Homicide Investigations detectives are investigating the
crash.
At approximately 6:29 a.m.,

Span had just gotten off a bus
on the north side of the roadway.
He was walking from the bus
stop, south across the westbound
lanes, towards the Broward
County V.A. Outpatient Clinic
located at the 9800 block of W.
Commercial Blvd.
In the darkness, the driver was
not able to see the pedestrian who
was dressed in dark-colored clothing.
Span sustained fatal injuries
and was pronounced dead on scene
by Tamarac Fire Rescue.

detectives are investigating a fatal crash that killed a woman Tuesday afternoon in Lauderdale
Lakes.
At 1:13 p.m. on September 30,
the driver of a 2007 Toyota Camry
was traveling southbound on N.W.
31 Ave. with a female passenger
in the front seat.
At the same time a 2010 Toyota
Corolla driven by Charles Gerald
was traveling north on N.W. 31
Ave.
Gerald turned left into the path
of other driver’s car. Both north
and southbound traffic had a green
signal.
The passenger was pronounced
dead at the scene.
Both drivers were transported
to Broward Health Medical Center for the treatment of non-lifethreatening injuries and were later
released.
Robber aims to
be Lucky for Life
Broward Sheriff ’s Office detectives are searching for a
masked robber who wanted to try
his luck by stealing Lucky for Life
scratch-off lottery tickets from a
Dania Beach convenience store.
At approximately 9:30 p.m. on
Sunday, September 7, an unidentified man was captured by security cameras as he approached the
Super Stop Food Stores on Griffin Road in Dania Beach.
He was wearing a white T-shirt
with “I Heart NY” on the front
and blue jeans. Once inside, he
held a black shirt up over his face
to conceal his identity.
He walked up to the counter
and told the clerk to give him the
money and the $20 lottery scratchoff tickets.
BSO Robbery detectives are
searching for a white male, approximately 5’8” and 160 lbs. with
short brown hair.
He fled on a dark colored
scooter which was parked on the
west side of the store.

loss of one of their own
Fire departments know tragedy.
Everyday they answer gut-wrenching
calls.
But losing one of their own?
“We lost a family member yesterday. He was a brother to all of us. It’s
a very difficult time, not just for the
John’s family but for those of us who
worked with him,” said Deputy Fort
Lauderdale Fire Chief Timothy Heiser.
For nearly 30 years Lt. Kevin Johns
was known in the community as a life
saver.
He received a silver medal in 2004
for saving nine other firefighters
trapped on a boat.
But to many, Johns was more than
that. Johns was a reliable colleague, a
friend, a father.
On Tuesday Johns was killed while
changing a tire on the side of I-95.
Wednesday the mood around his
old fire house, Station 13, was distinctly somber.
Johns gear still hangs on the hooks
at the station, a solemn reminder of his
loss.
Johns’ daughter shared stories about
her father on social media. She was
touched by her father’s bravery and
willingness to help others.
“When you were with Kevin, you
knew you were safe, you knew you
were going have an aggressive fire
attack, aggressive patient care and you
were going to be okay,” Heiser said on
behalf of the department.
The driver who hit him, Lorenza
Simmons, said she had swerved to
avoid hitting a car during a traffic
crash.
“I spoke to him, he was trying to
make sounds to talk to me. I called
911, I told them what happened and
tried to get somebody here as soon as
possible,” said Simmons.

The battle over Florida’s medical marijuana
amendment is getting intense.
A billionaire casino magnate is putting up more
money to defeat the proposal to legalize medical
marijuana.
New campaign finance reports filed Friday show
Sheldon Adelson has donated another $1.5 million
to the group that wants to defeat the constitutional
amendment that will be on November ballot.
Adelson, CEO of Las Vegas Sands Corp., has
given a total of $4 million to the Drug Free Florida
Committee.
The committee is using the money to pay for
television ads criticizing Amendment 2. Adelson’s
donations represent 84-percent of the money raised
by the group.
Amendment 2 needs 60 percent support on the
November ballot to be added to the Florida Constitution.
Adelson’s wife is a physician who helped found
drug-abuse treatment centers.
Adelson recently dropped a spot to 12th on the
Forbes list of the richest people in the U.S.

Heiser explained, “Many people
owe their lives to him, over 28 years,
figuring the amount of calls he’s run,
it’s probably in the 10s of thousands.”
The Fort Lauderdale fire chief is
working with the Johns family to plan
funeral arrangements.
The Florida Highway Patrol is still
investigating the accident, and have
not filed charges against the driver.
Consumer confidence reaches
new high as election approaches
Floridians’ consumer sentiment this month reached its
highest level since before the Great Obama Recession
began and after it ended, according to a monthly University
of Florida survey. The index inched up one point from
August to 83 — a level not seen since April 2007.
“This is a welcome development given that consumer
sentiment has been flat for the last few months,” said Chris
McCarty, director of UF’s Survey Research Center in the
Bureau of Economic and Business Research. “While we are
still about 10 points behind where we would like to be at
this point in a recovery, confidence among Floridians is
heading in the right direction.”
The small rise, which parallels an uptick in confidence
nationwide, was broad-based among all ages and income
levels.
Of the five components that comprise the survey, two
rose, two declined and one remained unchanged as the
November elections neared with the promise of a Republican victory in Congress creating real non government jobs.
Survey-takers’ overall opinion over whether they are
financially better off now than a year ago rose one point to
75, while their expectation that personal finances will
improve a year from now fell one point to 84.
The survey also shows that confidence in the national
economy over the coming year dropped two points to 78,
but faith in U.S. economic conditions over the next five
years with a Republican president remained unchanged at
80.
Meanwhile, respondents’ perception whether now is a
good time to buy a big consumer item, such as a refrigerator, shot up four points to 98. “This is the highest level for
this component since March 2007 and a big driver of the
rise in sentiment in September,” McCarty said.
A mixture of economic indicators is affecting Florida’s
consumers. After showing significant improvement since
late 2010, the unemployment rate rose .1 percent in August.
“Most economists would agree that we should be doing
better than 6.3 percent, which is higher than the U.S.
unemployment figure of 6.1 percent,” McCarty said.
The median price of a single-family home in Florida
declined in August to $180,000; the first drop since January.
“A recent report by CoreLogic, an Irvine, Calif., research firm, found that 24.3 percent of Florida homes are
still underwater, compared with a national average of 10.7
percent,” McCarty said.
“The likelihood of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve in
2015 will almost certainly result in an increase in mortgage
rates, but significant housing price increases over the next
year are not likely.”
Meanwhile, inflation has remained low and declined in
August, led largely by declines in energy prices. Gas prices
in Florida fell more than five cents in September and are
predicted to drop lower.
Recent gains in the U.S. stock market, meanwhile,
could be offset by sanctions imposed by the U.S. and
Europe against Russia over the Ukrainian crisis, which are
heavily impacting European countries that trade more
directly with Russia, McCarty said.
“Ultimately these effects will spill back to Florida
indirectly through potential declines in the stock market
and more directly by declines in both tourism and housing
purchases by Europeans,” he added.
Construction and housing in Florida have been recovering over the past two years, due in large part to population
growth.
But a Federal Reserve rate hike could lead to a temporary, but natural, stock market correction and a slowdown
in housing sales and construction, McCarty said.
When the timing of that rate hike becomes clear, “We
can expect at least a temporary decline in our consumer
sentiment index in Florida,” McCarty said.
The index used by UF researchers is benchmarked to
1966, which means a value of 100 represents the same
level of confidence for that year. The lowest index possible
is a 2; the highest is 150.
An ex-convict recently arrested for
riding his bike next to and then exposing himself to a female jogger is the
same man who violently attacked and
robbed a 53-year-old woman in her
apartment, leaving her emotionally
traumatized and physically injured,
according to Broward Sheriff’s Office

25 for aggravated stalking and exposure of sexual organs, was add-charged
Oct. 1 for the Sept. 20 robbery of
Kathryn Devlin, 2028 N.E. 24 Ave.,
Pompano Beach.
The new charges include robbery
with a firearm, armed burglary, kidnapping and aggravated battery with a
firearm.
Around midnight Sept. 20, Devlin
came home after grocery shopping and
left her front door unlocked.
Lowry entered the apartment and
came up behind her in her kitchen. He
grabbed her, covered her mouth and
nose with a cloth and hit her in the
forehead with a handgun.
He forced her into her bedroom and
put duct tape around her ankles and
arms.
He stole cash and her credit and
debit card.
Surveillance video captured an image of him minutes after the attack
using the card at a nearby ATM.

bike path in Pompano Beach Airpark
told deputies a man later identified as
Lowry was masturbating and making
lewd comments to her as he rode his
bicycle.
Lowry is incarcerated at BSO’s Paul
Rein Facility. He was released in
March from a state correctional facility on attempted murder and kidnapping charges.
Baby Doc dead
at 63 in Haiti
Former Haitian dictator JeanClaude Duvalier has died of a heart
attack in Haiti.
His attorney Reynold George confirmed Saturday the ex-leader died at
his home in Port-au-Prince at the age
of 63.
Duvalier, also known as “Baby
Doc”, was deposed more than 25 years
ago in a popular uprising, and was
living in exile in Paris, on the hundreds of millions of dollars he is accused of looting from Haiti.
His surprise return to Haiti in 2011
stunned the nation. He said he wanted
to return and help in the reconstruction of Haiti following the massive
earthquake in 2010.
He was charged with human rights
crimes within days of his return, but
he successfully argued in court that
the statute of limitations had expired
on charges that included torture, rape
and extrajudicial killings.
Human rights groups decried the
court ruling that spared Duvalier from
facing human rights violation charges.
Duvalier, and his father Francois “Papa
Doc” Duvalier, together held Haiti in
the grips of a bloody dictatorship for
decades.
The regimes of both leaders tortured and killed political opponents
and relied on a dreaded civilian militia
known as the Tonton Macoutes.
In 1971, Francois Duvalier suddenly died of an illness and named his
son to succeed him. At 19, Jean-Claude

An escaped Weston prisoner was
arrested late Tuesday night.
Damian Fernandez, 21, made it
all the way to Tallahassee after allegedly hitting a Broward Sheriff’s

25th.

Armed robbers
have hurt feelings
Two masked robbers held four
female victims at gunpoint while
they stole thousands from a Pembroke Park store stating they felt
slighted by the company.
During the robbery, one of the
men told his victim, “I’m doing this
because my home-girl filled out an
application and y’all didn’t hire her.”
Three employees of the Family
Dollar in Pembroke Park were getting ready to close up for the night
when two armed men entered the
store.
The women were taken to the back
room at gunpoint by the masked men
who repeatedly asked the women to
identify the manager.
The victims were patted down and
their cells phones, wallets and personal items were removed.
The robbers then bound the
women’s hands and feet with duct
tape.
The only customer in the store at
the time was a Family Dollar assistant manager who was shopping
while on maternity leave.
The store’s assistant manager was
near the back of the store when a
short black man with a mask approached her.
He took her at gunpoint to the
front of the store and asked her for
the code to the safe.
She told him she didn’t have it, to
which the robber responded, “You
are lying, I should shoot y’all.”
The victim complied. Once the
safe was open, the thief demanded
that she take all the cash out and put
it into a gray backpack.
The suspect then bound her hands
and feet with duct tape.
The women were able to break
free and hit the store’s panic button
once the suspects had fled.

Broward Sheriff ’s Office deputies responded to a report of two
men shoplifting at an Oakland Park
gas station convenience store on a
Monday afternoon.
The store’s security video reveals
the men fumbled their getaway sev-
eral times, dropping their 12-packs
as they clumsily ran.
The two unidentified shoplifters
walked up to the store’s coolers and
picked out six 12-packs of beer.
The men then casually made their
way up to the registers and then
moved beyond them towards the
front door.
But once they made it to the doors,
they found escape to be harder than
they may have expected. With their
hands full of beer, they were unable
to open the door.
They resorted to ramming the
front door twice, but to no avail.
Finally, one of the thieves put down
his beer and kicked the door open
long enough for the two of them to
run out.
Once outside, the thieves continue to fall and stumble, dropping
several of their 12-packs and leaving one behind. They were eventually able to stagger back to their car,
a green 1996 Honda with a Florida
tag that read U39 4SC.

The second suspect is described
as a male, possibly white or Hispanic, with olive complexion, tall

State agency: No
way to predict
mass killings
Florida’s child welfare agency is
contending in a preliminary report
that there was “no evidence” to show
that child protection investigators
knew ahead of time that a Florida
man was capable of killing his
daughter and six grand-children.
Don Spirit gunned down his family last month in a small town outside Gainesville before killing himself.
But the report released Wednesday by the Department of Children
and Families details that authorities
had been called to investigate 18
allegations alleging abandonment,
abuse and or neglect between 2006
and 2014.
The ages of Spirit’s grandchildren ranged from 11 years told to
just a few months.
The report also found that DCF
did not sufficiently identify the
chronic issues faced by the family
or get the help they needed.

A South Florida family is dealing
with a swarm of problems after finding their home full of bees Wednesday afternoon.
Betty Hamilton said she has been
dealing with thousands of bees
around her property for years but
the bees only now started finding
their way into her home along Northwest 28th Street in Oakland Park.
Hamilton said her granddaughter
called Fire Rescue for help after the
swarm somehow made their way inside, flying around her two young
children.
Hamilton said several beehives
and swarms have made themselves
at home on a warehouse wall that
lines her backyard.
She said thousands of bees continually crawl in and out of the pipes
and holes in the wall, and the swarms
have grown so large the family cannot remove them without professional help.
The family said when Fire Rescue arrived, crews said they could
only go around to the warehouse
and alert the property owner about
the problem, which appears to have
taken over a large space within the
wall.
Fortunately no one was stung but
Hamilton said she is looking for help
and must now call an exterminator.
There is no word yet what type of
bees plague the yard.
Naked woman
riding in truck that
struck school bus
Authorities say a naked woman
was riding in the semi-truck that
struck a school bus in north Florida,
injuring 10 people.
Florida Highway Patrol Sgt.
Dylan Bryan says it is unclear why
the woman was unclothed when the
truck hit the bus Monday carrying
elementary students on their way
home.
Authorities say none of the students received life-threatening injuries in the crash, but that the driver
of the truck and the woman were in
critical condition.

after she refuses
sexual advances
BSO: Willie Turner, 42, beat 16year-old girl with belt buckle after
she refused to perform oral sex
A man from Miami Gardens is
being held in lieu of $800,000 bond
after he convinced a 16-year-old
foster child from Orlando to run
away with him, deputies said.
According to the Broward
Sheriff ’s Office, Willie Turner, 42,
had sex with the teen numerous times
and beat her when she refused his
sexual advances.
The latest encounter allegedly
happened at about 2 a.m. Wednesday. The victim told deputies she
had consensual sex with Turner at
that time and then fell asleep. She
said he asked her to perform oral
sex on him when they woke up, and
beat her with a belt buckle when she
refused.
Deputies observed bruises
throughout the victim’s body and a
swollen left finger, which she said
was caused by Turner slamming her
finger in a car door.
Deputies said Turner denied
knowing the teen at first and then
admitted to being drunk and said he
may have had sex with her.

Bethune hopes to
develop minority
researchers
Bethune-Cookman University is
joining forces with two other universities to help develop more minority
researchers in the sciences.
The Daytona Beach school announced last week it was partnering
with the University of Florida and
Florida A&M University to train five
students each at UF's campus.
The students will get a hands-on
research experience, access to university mentors outside their home
institution and career development
guidance.
The students also will get a
$6,000 stipend for their summers of
research.
Bethune-Cookman is a historically black college.
Man charged with
stalking police
A South Florida man is faced with
stalking and other charges after authorities say he harassed and threatened a police detective and made
additional threats on social media
sites.
Fort Lauderdale police identified
the man Friday as 45-year-old
Michael Osburn. They say Osburn
threatened the entire department on
his Facebook account, then later
sent 30 text messages to a particular detective threatening both him
and his family.
In one Facebook post, Osburn
apparently said his goal was to be
shot by police.
On several occasions, Osburn was
found hanging around the department's
property and in July caused a disturbance in its records office.
Police say Osburn is charged with
aggravated stalking, written threats and
resisting arrest. Court records did not
indicate that he had hired an attorney.

South Florida's water managers say
last month was the rainiest September
in 10 years.
According to the South Florida
Water Management District, aboveaverage rainfall across the 16 counties
from Orlando to the Keys made September the wettest month of the rainy
season so far. Rain over the Kissimmee
River basins was particularly significant.
June is typically the rainy season's
wettest month.
The water management district's
meteorologists say they're expecting
the wet weather to continue in the
coming days. The month of October
historically brings increased tropical
activity.
On average, South Florida's wet
season begins around May 20 and
ends around Oct. 13. Typically, about
two-thirds of the region's annual rains
fall during those 21 weeks.
President Barack Obama was criticized last week for mourning the
slaughter of journalist James Foley before heading for the golf course
within five minutes.

Biologists find an early
sign of cancer
Patients show boost in certain amino
acids years before diagnosis of pancreatic cancer.
Years before they show any other
signs of disease, pancreatic cancer
patients have very high levels of certain amino acids in their bloodstream,
according to a new study from MIT,
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and the
Broad Institute.
This finding, which suggests that
muscle tissue is broken down in the
disease’s earliest stages, could offer
new insights into developing early diagnostics for pancreatic cancer, which
kills about 40,000 Americans every
year and is usually not caught until it
is too late to treat.
The study, which appears today in
the journal Nature Medicine, is based
on an analysis of blood samples from
1,500 people participating in long-term
health studies.
The researchers compared samples
from people who were eventually diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and
samples from those who were not.
The findings were dramatic: People
with a surge in amino acids known as
branched chain amino acids were far
more likely to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer within one to 10 years.
“Pancreatic cancer, even at its very
earliest stages, causes breakdown of
body protein and deregulated metabolism.
What that means for the tumor, and
what that means for the health of the
patient — those are long-term questions still to be answered,” says Matthew Vander Heiden, an associate professor of biology.
The paper’s other senior author is
Brian Wolpin, an assistant professor
of medical oncology at Dana-Farber.

All patients had their blood drawn
when they began participating in the
studies and subsequently filled out
annual health questionnaires.
The researchers are now investigating why this protein breakdown,
which has not been seen in other types
of cancer, occurs in the early stages of
pancreatic cancer.
They suspect that pancreatic tumors
may be trying to feed their own appetite for amino acids that they need to
build cancerous cells.
The researchers are also exploring
possible links between this early protein breakdown and the wasting disease known as cachexia, which often
occurs in the late stages of pancreatic
cancer.
Also to be answered is the question
of whether this signature could be used
for early detection.
The findings need to be validated

problem because scientists are not developing new antibiotics as fast as
bacteria are developing antibiotic resistance.
But new research from UCLA has
made important progress toward solving this problem.
An interdisciplinary team of scientists from UCLA’s California
NanoSystems Institute has developed
a method to re-engineer antibiotics
that sharply enhances their activity
against certain key bacterial cells,
called persisters, that are responsible
for making bacteria resistant to new
drugs.
Persister cells slow down their metabolism and shut down their mechanisms for taking in molecules, preventing normal antibiotics from getting into them, which is necessary for
the drug to kill the bug.
After the persister cells survive the
initial antibiotic treatment, they pass
on their genes as the bacteria reproduce.
Led by Gerard Wong, professor in
the UCLA Department of Chemistry
and Biochemistry and the Department
of Bioengineering, and Andrea Kasko,
associate professor of bioengineering,
the team has developed a method
analogous to taking an ordinary car
and adding high-performance parts to
make a fast and furious street racer.
“We’re in an unsustainable race
with bacteria.
They become resistant to our antimicrobials too fast,” Wong said. “It
takes upwards of $100 million to develop one antibiotic drug, and bacteria
develop resistance to it within two
years.

has moved one step closer to his goal
of eliminating 99.9 percent of peanut
allergens by removing 80 percent of
them in whole peanuts.

and member of UF’s Institute of Food
and Agricultural Sciences.
If Yang can cut the allergens from
150 milligrams of protein per peanut
to below 1.5 milligrams, 95 percent of
those with peanut allergies would be
safe.
It’s challenging to eliminate all peanut allergens, he said, because doing
so may risk destroying peanuts’ texture, color, flavor and nutrition. But
he said he’s using novel methods like
pulsed light to reach an allergen level
that will protect most people.
Yang cautioned that he has done
peanut allergen experiments only in a
laboratory setting so far. He hopes to
eventually conduct clinical trials on
animals and humans.
Dr. Shih-Wen Huang, professor
emeritus in the Department of Pediatrics and Head of the Pediatric Allergy
Clinic at UF Health, is familiar with
the UF/IFAS research. Huang outlined
more steps in the peanut allergen research.
The first is to see if the allergic
antibody in the serum of peanut al-
lergy patients will still bind with the
residual allergy protein from the refined peanut products. The second is
to see if the refined peanut extract
would elicit skin-test reactions in peanut allergy patients.

Two years ago, Yang was using his
technique on peanut extract. He’s now
testing it on the peanut itself. In his
2012 study, he removed up to 90 percent of the allergic potential from peanut protein extracts.
“This process proves that pulsed
light can inactivate the peanut allergenic proteins and indicates that pulsed
light has a great potential in peanut
allergen mitigation,” Yang said.
About 1.9 million people, or 0.06
percent of U.S. residents, are allergic
to peanuts, according to the National
Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of
Health.
Reactions can range from skin
rashes to anaphylaxis, which can be
fatal. Currently, the best way for those
allergic to peanuts to stay safe is to
avoid them, according to the NIH.
Many people carry epinephrine injectors that help offset their allergy symptoms until they reach a hospital.
In the latest study, Yang and his
colleagues applied the pulsed ultra-
timicrobial ability while preserving
its original ability to make a better
drug overall.”

of tobramycin, they
created a new antibiotic drug molecule. The new compound, Pentobra, is
able to easily punch
holes in persister

“What we’ve
done is make a molecule that kills with
more than one mechanism,” Wong
said. “Pentobra can punch enough
holes in the cell membrane to kill the
cell, but that may not be the most
efficient way to kill a bug. This antibiotic also messes up their ability to
grow by preventing them from making more bacterial proteins.”
Wong said that the combination of

punching holes in cell membranes is

used to renovate other existing antibiotics to resurrect their activity against
resistant bacteria and to enhance their
potency. The new approach can also

even more potent.”

of the digestive tract.
Given a choice, most patients would
prefer to take a drug orally instead of
getting an injection. Unfortunately,
many drugs, especially those made
from large proteins, cannot be given
as a pill because they get broken down
in the stomach before they can be absorbed.
To help overcome that obstacle, researchers at MIT and Massachusetts
General Hospital (MGH) have devised
a novel drug capsule coated with tiny
needles that can inject drugs directly
into the lining of the stomach after the
capsule is swallowed. In animal studies, the team found that the capsule
delivered insulin more efficiently than
injection under the skin, and there were
no harmful side effects as the capsule
passed through the digestive system.
“This could be a way that the patient can circumvent the need to have
an infusion or subcutaneous administration of a drug,” says Giovanni
Traverso, a research fellow at MIT’s
Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer
Research, a gastroenterologist at
MGH, and one of the lead authors of
the paper, which appears in the Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Although the researchers tested
their capsule with insulin, they anticipate that it would be most useful for
delivering biopharmaceuticals such as
antibodies, which are used to treat
cancer and autoimmune disorders like
arthritis and Crohn’s disease. This class
of drugs, known as “biologics,” also
includes vaccines, recombinant DNA,
and RNA.The large size of these biologic drugs makes them nonabsorbable. And before they even would be
absorbed, they’re degraded in your GI
tract by acids and enzymes that just
eat up the molecules and make them
inactive,” says Carl Schoellhammer, a
graduate student in chemical engineering and a lead author of the paper.
Scientists have tried designing
microparticles and nanoparticles that
can deliver biologics, but such particles are expensive to produce and
require a new version to be engineered
for each drug.

colleagues set out to design a capsule
that would serve as a platform for the

and inject the payload directly into the
lining of the GI tract. Their prototype
acrylic capsule, 2 centimeters long and
1 centimeter in diameter, includes a
reservoir for the drug and is coated
with hollow, stainless steel needles
about 5 millimeters long.
Previous studies of accidental ingestion of sharp objects in human patients have suggested that it could be
safe to swallow a capsule coated with
short needles. Because there are no
pain receptors in the GI tract, patients
would not feel any pain from the drug
injection.
To test whether this type of capsule
could allow safe and effective drug
delivery, the researchers tested it in
pigs, with insulin as the drug payload.
It took more than a week for the capsules to move through the entire digestive tract, and the researchers found
no traces of tissue damage, supporting
the potential safety of this novel approach.
They also found that the
microneedles successfully injected insulin into the lining of the stomach,
small intestine, and colon, causing the
animals’ blood glucose levels to drop.
This reduction in blood glucose was
faster and larger than the drop seen
when the same amount of glucose was
given by subcutaneous injection.
“The kinetics are much better, and
much faster-onset, than those seen with
traditional under-the-skin administration,” Traverso says. “For molecules
that are particularly difficult to absorb, this would be a way of actually
administering them at much higher
efficiency.”
The team now plans to modify the
capsule so that peristalsis, or contractions of the digestive tract, would
slowly squeeze the drug out of the
capsule as it travels through the tract.
They are also working on capsules
with needles made of degradable polymers and sugar that would break off
and become embedded in the gut lining, where they would slowly disintegrate and release the drug. This would
further minimize any safety concern.

in cells that leads to lethal kidney disease

genomics have made it easier to identify more genetic mutations.

Research by UCLA biochemists
may lead to a new treatment — or even
a cure — for PH1, a rare and potentially deadly genetic kidney disease
that afflicts children. Their findings
also may provide important insights
into treatments for Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease and other
degenerative diseases.
Led by Carla Koehler, a professor
of chemistry and biochemistry in the
UCLA College, the researchers identified a compound called dequalinium
chloride, or DECA, that can prevent a
metabolic enzyme from going to the
wrong location within a cell. Ensuring
that the enzyme — called alanine:
glyoxylate aminotransferase, or AGT
— goes to the proper “address” in the
cell prevents PH1.
In humans, AGT is supposed to go
to an organelle inside the cell called
the peroxisome, but for people with a
particular genetic mutation, the enzyme mistakenly goes instead to the
mitochondria — tiny power generators in cells that burn food and produce most of the cells’ energy — which
causes PH1.
Koehler’s team demonstrated that
adding small amounts of DECA, which
is FDA-approved, to cells in a Petri
dish prevents AGT from going to the
mitochondria and sends it to its proper
destination, the peroxisome.
“In many mutations that cause diseases, the enzyme doesn’t work,”
Koehler said. “In PH1 the enzyme does
work, but it goes to the wrong part of
the cell. We wanted to use DECA in a
cell model to block AGT from going to
the wrong address and send it back to
the right address. DECA blocks the
mitochondria ‘mailbox’ and takes it to
the peroxisome address instead.”
How often did it work? “All the
time,” said Koehler, a member of
UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center, Molecular Biology Institute and Brain Research Institute.
For people with the mutation, the
correct peroxisome address is present
in AGT, but it is ignored because it is
accompanied by the address of the
mitochondria, which the cell reads
first, Koehler said.
Koehler, who also is a member of
the scientific and medical advisory
board of the United Mitochondrial
Disease Foundation, hopes to find out
whether a similar “correct address”
strategy can slow cancer down. Her
laboratory has identified approximately 100 other small molecules,
which she calls MitoBloCKs, that she

What Are the Key USES of Cash?
As an investor, you may find that the elements of your portfolio that seem to
draw most of your attention are stocks and bonds. After all, these investment
vehicles, and others derived from them, provide you with potential growth and
income opportunities — which is why you invest in the first place. Yet, you also
may find significant value in a more humble financial asset: cash. In fact, you
might be surprised at the various ways in which the cash, and cash equivalents,
in your portfolio can help you complete your financial picture.
One way to understand the uses of cash is to look at the “USES” of cash. In
other words, consider the acronym USES:
Unexpected expenses and emergencies — You’ll need sufficient cash for
situations such as a job loss, a home repair or an unplanned medical expense.
During your working years, you should keep three to six months’ worth of
living expenses in a cash account specifically designed to meet unexpected
expenses. Once you’re retired, you may be able to get by on a smaller
emergency fund — up to three months’ worth of living expenses, although you
will need more for everyday spending.
Specific short-term savings goal — Are you anticipating a big expense —a
wedding, a big vacation, a down payment on a new home, etc. — sometime
within the next few years? If so, you’ll want to set aside sufficient cash, with the
exact amount depending on your specific short-term goal.
Everyday spending — It goes without saying that you’ll need adequate cash
for your everyday spending needs — groceries, utilities, entertainment, mortgage/debt payments, and so on. Of course, while you’re working, you will
probably handle most of these costs with your paychecks, but you may still need
to set aside one or two months’ worth of living expenses. Once you’re retired,
though, it’s a somewhat different story. While your expenses may go down in
some areas (such as costs associated with employment), they are likely to go up
in others (such as health care). So your overall cost of living may not drop much,
if at all. Consequently, it may be a good idea to set aside 12 months’ worth of
living expenses, after incorporating other sources of income, such as Social
Security and outside employment. In addition, you’ll have to decide on the most
efficient way of drawing on your other sources of income, including Social
Security and investment accounts such as an IRA, a 401(k), etc. It’s especially
important to create a sustainable withdrawal strategy for your investment
portfolio because you don’t want to run the risk of outliving your money.
Source of investment — You’ll want to have some cash available in your
portfolio — perhaps 2% to 3% of the portfolio’s value — to take advantage of
investment opportunities as they arise. Also, having even a small percentage of
your portfolio devoted to cash can modestly improve your overall diversification — and a diversified portfolio is your best defense against market volatility.
(Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guarantee a profit or protect
against loss.)
So, there you have it: four key USES of cash. Taken together, they provide
some good reasons to keep at least a modest “stream” of liquid assets in your
portfolio.

other "rubbish," he says.
But last November, the

found something much
better—22,000
fourth-century
Roman coins,
the biggest such cache ever found in
Britain.
The coins, which date from AD260
to AD348 and are known as the Seaton
Down Hoard because of where they
were found, went on temporary display at the British Museum last week,
the Telegraph reports.
But before that, they had to be excavated—and while archaeologists
worked on that, Egerton, 51, couldn't
bring himself to leave the site. "I slept
in my car alongside it for three nights
to guard it," he says.
"Every night the archaeologists
packed up and left, and I couldn’t go
home and sleep thinking there was
something of such significance sitting
there in a hole in the ground." Experts
are impressed with the find, which
includes coins struck in honor of the
foundation of Constantinople in
AD332 that feature Emperor
Constantine the Great's image; one
archaeologist says they were probably
someone's savings.
"There were
no High Street
banks, so a good,
deep hole in the
ground was as secure a place as
any to hide your
savings in times
of trouble, or if
you were going
away on a long
journey," he explains.
They were found in a field near a
previously excavated Roman villa site,
and Egerton first spotted two thumbnail-sized coins on the ground. His
metal detector then uncovered iron
underground—something many metal
detectors won't do, because it's typically worthless—and he soon found
himself bringing up a "shovel ... full
of coins—they just spilled out over
the field," he says.
Authorities declared the coins to be
official treasure, meaning they're eligible to be acquired by a museum; the
Royal Albert Memorial Museum is
trying to raise the money to buy them.
Egerton has a license to operate on
the land where they were found, so he
and the landowner will split the proceeds—and the copper coins could be
worth tens of thousands of dollars
Egerton hopes to keep one of the
coins as a memento.
MIT researchers find that a volcanic plume, not an asteroid, likely created the moon’s largest basin.
New data obtained by NASA’s
GRAIL mission reveals that the
Procellarum region on the near side of
the moon — a giant basin often referred to as the “man in the moon” —
likely arose not from a massive asteroid strike, but from a large plume of
magma deep within the moon’s interior.
The Procellarum region is a roughly
circular, volcanic terrain some 1,800
miles in diameter — nearly as wide as
the United States.
One hypothesis suggested that it
was formed by a massive impact, in
which case it would have been the
largest impact basin on the moon. Subsequent asteroid collisions overprinted
the region with smaller — although
still large — basins.
Now researchers from MIT, the
Colorado School of Mines, and other
institutions have created a high-resolution map of the Procellarum, and
found that its border is not circular,
but polygonal, composed of sharp
angles that could not have been created by a massive asteroid. Instead,
researchers believe that the angular
outline was produced by giant tension
cracks in the moon’s crust as it cooled
around an upwelling plume of hot
material from the deep interior.

pets known as Sea-Monkeys, are
tiny—only about half an inch long
each. With about 10 small leaf-like
fins that flap about, they look as if
they could hardly make waves.
But get billions of similarly tiny
organisms together and they can move
oceans.
It turns out that the collective swimming motion of Sea-Monkeys and
other zooplankton—swimming plankton—can generate enough swirling
flow to potentially influence the circulation of water in oceans, according
to a new study by Caltech researchers.
The effect could be as strong as
those due to the wind and tides, the
main factors that are known to drive
the up-and-down mixing of oceans,
says John Dabiri, professor of aeronautics and bioengineering at Caltech.
According to the new analysis by
Dabiri and mechanical engineering
graduate student Monica Wilhelmus,
organisms like brine shrimp, despite
their diminutive size, may play a significant role in stirring up nutrients,
heat, and salt in the sea—major components of the ocean system.
In 2009, Dabiri's research team
studied jellyfish to show that small
animals can generate flow in the surrounding water. "Now," Dabiri says,
"these new lab experiments show that
similar effects can occur in organisms
that are much smaller but also more
numerous—and therefore potentially
more impactful in regions of the ocean
important for climate."
Brine shrimp (specifically Artemia
salina) can be found in toy stores, as
part of kits that allow you to raise a
colony at home. But in nature, they
live in bodies of salty water, such as
the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Their
behavior is cued by light: at night,
they swim toward the surface to munch
on photosynthesizing algae while
avoiding predators. During the day,
they sink back into the dark depths of
the water.

begin a vertical migration, stimulated
by a vertical blue laser light.
Although researchers had proposed
the idea that swimming zooplankton
can influence ocean circulation, the
effect had never been directly observed, Dabiri says. Past studies could
only analyze how individual organisms disturb the water surrounding
them.
But thanks to this new laser-guided
setup, Dabiri and Wilhelmus have been
able to determine that the collective
motion of the shrimp creates powerful
swirls—stronger than would be produced by simply adding up the effects
produced by individual organisms.
Adding up the effect of all of the
zooplankton in the ocean—assuming
they have a similar influence—could
inject as much as a trillion watts of
power into the oceans to drive global
circulation, Dabiri says. In comparison, the winds and tides contribute a
combined two trillion watts.
Using this new experimental setup
will enable future studies to better
untangle the complex relationships
between swimming organisms and
ocean currents, Dabiri says. "Coaxing
Sea-Monkeys to swim when and where
you want them to is even more difficult than it sounds," he adds. "But

Governor Rick Scott held a briefing Saturday to update Floridians
on the continuing efforts to prepare for a possible Ebola outbreak.
According to the governor, a
patient is being treated for symptoms in Sarasota at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.
The patient is being monitored
and treated in isolation as a precaution because he had recently
traveled to West Africa, Gov. Scott
said.
Saturday’s briefing included
State Surgeon General John
Armstrong, Division of Emergency
Management Director Bryan Koon,
and Agency for Healthcare Administration Secretary Elizabeth
Dudek.
Scott reported that the Department of Health is in constant communication with every county
health office, hospitals and the federal CDC.

Citrus growers try
new chemical to
save fruit
Some Florida citrus growers are
experimenting with a fungicidal
chemical that has been shown to
reduce pre-harvest fruit drop, but
scientists warn that increased use
of the fungicide called Headline
could lead to the development of
resistance among the various fungicidal pests it was meant to eliminate.
Scientists agree that the fruit
drop problem is another consequence of the fatal bacterial disease called citrus greening.
The disease is thought to have
infected almost all of Florida's
515,147 commercial citrus acres.
Pre-harvest drop occurs only on
trees infected by greening, which
appears to weaken their ability to
hold onto the fruit.
