Welcome Back
Welcome back everyone for Term 4. This is always a very busy term with the Primary
School Concert, Turkish Republic Day concert, VCE examinations, examinations for
Years 9 to 11, tests and assessments for all other students, report writing. graduations,
award presentations, activity days and much more! There are a few special dates and
events that we will list in the newsletter so you can keep up to date with what is happening and make special arrangements if necessary.
Sena Kocoglu
Last year Sena Kocoglu was our Dux of the College. She received an ATAR score of
97.25. This was very impressive and Sena, who had been at Mt Hira College since
Preps, should be very proud of herself. This year she is studying Arts at Melbourne
University. Mr Nadir Yildiz, our Business Manager, proposed to the Board of Directors
that any student who achieves an ATAR of 95+ should be presented with a car for their
efforts. The Board supported this proposal and this Monday, 6th October, Sena was presented with a brand new Suzuki Swift. We had to wait till later in the year as she didn’t
turn 18 until July and then she had to get her licence.
On Monday morning Sena was given the keys at assembly and then taken outside to be presented with her new car
beautifully decorated with balloons and a big bow! I know she was very excited to receive this car. I would like
to thank Mr Yildiz for organising this with Booran Suzuki (Dandenong) who provided the College with much support. The local newspapers, the Leader and Journal, attended, took photos and interviewed Sena, so look out for
this next week. Let’s see if this inspires others to do well in their up-coming VCE examinations.
Scholarships
Students wishing to apply for Scholarships in the Secondary school must have their applications in by this Friday
10th October. Late applications will not be accepted. The Scholarship examination is on this Saturday 11 th October in Room 7, the first classroom in the Secondary corridor. This examination, covering English and Mathematics, commences at 10.00am but students need to there about 10 minutes early to ensure they are ready on time.
Students arriving late will not be given extra time so make sure they are there on time. If you have any questions
regarding the Scholarship process, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Tim Campbell, our Acting Vice Principal,
who is coordinating this program. Good luck to all the candidates. We usually provide one full and one half
scholarship for each year level.
Student Presentation
Unfortunately we have noticed that a number of students in both the primary school and secondary school have
inappropriate haircuts. This is particularly so with some of the boys. Our policy is that hair should be neat and
tidy and suitable for school. Some of the styles students have been coming with do not fit in with our idea of neat
and tidy. Students are not to have excessive changes in the length of their hair – for example they cannot shave the
side of the heads and then have longer hair on top. They have all been informed about this several times at assembly. A number of students have been spoken to about their haircuts. If they do not present themselves in a suitable way or correct their styles they will be suspended from school until they have corrected the style. Please do
not allow your children to shave the sides of their head. They are not to come to school with ‘mohawks’ or coloured hair. Girls who have shoulder length hair must have their hair tied back in a ponytail. A number of students
have also been seen wearing jewellery. The only jewellery which is allowed is a watch and girls may wear a small
pair of plain earrings – either studs or sleepers. They should not be wearing coloured stones or dangly earrings.
No other jewellery is to be worn to school. Please assist us to ensure that our students are neat and presentable at
all times. It certainly makes a difference when we have visitors to the school.
Primary School Concert
The students and staff have been busily preparing for the Primary School Concert which will be held on Thursday
30th October at the Frankston Arts Centre. There will be a dress rehearsal at the theatre in the morning and students will be dismissed at 1.00pm. All students, both Primary and Secondary, will be dismissed at 1.00pm on this
day except for VCE students who have classes during the afternoon. The following day, Friday 31 st October, will
be a Curriculum Day for students as we know they will be very tired.
Enrolments for 2015
We are almost full for next year. We have a few spaces at some year levels but many year levels have waiting
lists. There are waiting lists at Years Prep, 4, 6, 8 and 9. If you know of people who are thinking of enrolling at
Mt Hira College they will need to contact me as soon as possible. I also have a number of enrollments for 2016.
Currently I have thirteen Preps enrolled for 2016. If you know of Preps who will be commencing their schooling
in 2016 I suggest you call into the office for an enrollment form.
Punctuality
I would like to remind everyone that school starts at 8.45am and all students are expected to be in attendance by
this time. Students should aim to be at school between 8.30am and 8.40am to ensure they are ready for assembly
on Monday and class every other day. It shows tardiness and a lack of respect to arrive late when others have
made the effort to get there on time. The people who regularly tell me that there was a lot of traffic need to leave
earlier as there is always a lot of traffic! This is not a good excuse. Let’s see if we can improve our punctuality
this term.
