Arthur Lourié (1892 to 1966) was a Russian experimental composer who escaped the Soviet
crackdown on artistic freedoms by emigrating to France and later the United States. Although he
explored avant-garde techniques, this early Prelude owes more to the music of Scriabin and
Stravinsky. Little of J.C.F. Fischer’s (1656 to 1746) music survives, but he was well-respected
by both Bach and Handel, who sometimes borrowed motifs from his music. This “Chaconne” is a
set of variations that grows more and more virtuosic before returning to its quiet beginnings.
Canadian composer Tobin David Stokes (b. 1966) is notable for his work in opera, choral music
and television, including scores for documentaries by the BBC, ABC, and PBS. His
“Rejuvenation” is rooted in the American gospel tradition. “Perdido,” written by trombonist
Juan Tizol, became a Jazz standard after its recording by Duke Ellington in 1941.

United Nations (UN) Sunday is Next Week, October 19 (Sunday)!
On UN Sunday Children's Religious Education and Youth Groups will be commemorating UN
Day, a day which celebrates international cooperation in peace-building and human rights. Join
us during social hour for an international food fair. The children and youth will be selling food
and drink from countries which they have studied as a fundraiser for UNICEF. At 10:30 a.m.,
this fair is hosted by the Pre-Kindergarten through Sixth Grade classes and Jr. High Youth
Group. At 12:30 p.m., this fair will be hosted by the Jr. and Sr. High Youth Groups.
