I hope everyone had a good start to the year. As you know, 2015 marks the 60th anniversary of the Club. An organizing committee for the celebration has been formed and we will be sharing with you in the next issue, the activities and events lined up to celebrate this significant occasion. I look forward to your participation in the celebrations. I am pleased to update you that through last year’s charity project, we have raised a total of $38,373.65 which will be split between our beneficiaries – Sunlove Abode for Intellectually-Infirmed and Bright Vision Hospital. It is heartening to know that members were very supportive of this yearly project to help the less fortunate. A special mention also goes to SGCC staff who participated actively this year by contributing groceries and NTUC vouchers for the needy families in the community. Well done, SGCC! Just some quick updates on our sports achievements. The SGCC golfers came in second runner-up in the Inter-Social Clubs Golf Tournament (ISCGT). Our Club’s darters recently participated in the Inter-Club Darts Tournament at the Royal Selangor Club, in which they came in third in the Plates event. Our bowlers did well in the 15th International Milo Bowling Competition held in Kuala Lumpur from 21 November – 3 December last year, with 12 out of the 16 bowlers qualified for the finals in their respective divisions and our Club bowler Lim Zheng Chin emerged as the champion for the Under 15 category. I would like to extend my congratulations to all the sportsmen and sportswomen for their achievements. We have a few new sports programmes lined up for you in 2015. There will be an overseas diving trip to Tioman from 3 – 5 April 2015. We have recently launched some new fitness classes such as the Vinyasa Flow Yoga – a faster-paced yoga, Piloxing – a combination of pilates, boxing and dancing and also a special training programme for ladies called the Female Intensity Interval Training (FIIT). For those who want to make good on their new year’s resolution to keep fit, do check out these classes. Starting February, we will be offering a Sparkling Brunch every last Sunday of the month at Garden Grill. This brunch comes with an international buffet spread and unlimited servings of Prosecco. Editor’s Favourite Food & Beverage I wish to compliment Shakir and Segar for helping my friend find her handphone. We had a party at Club Twenty-Two and my friend Segar left her handphone behind. After the party, we called Security to report the loss of the handphone. Shakir immediately called Segar to check Club Twenty-Two. Shakir Luckily the handphone was found and Shakir called me immediately to collect it. Thank you guys and keep up the good work. – Dolly Sarah Valberg My wife and I would like to thank Balan, Segar and the Banquet team for providing great services during our son and daughter-in-law’s wedding reception at the Kensington Ballroom. Balan and Segar were very helpful and well-organised in carrying out their duties. All my relatives and guests were very impressed with the decoration and the banquet service. I will definitely recommend my friends to book SGCC for their future functions. – M Mariyappan Balan Security The car park was quite crowded but Freddy and the security team were very efficient in directing the traffic. Have any feedback to relate to us? Email us at feedback@sgcc.com.sg. New Guest Sign-in Procedure We have recently revamped our guest sign-in process. Instead of a common guest sign-in list, we are using individual guest sign-in slips so that personal data contained will not be exposed to other members. In addition, with the new process, members will be given a copy of the guest sign-in slip which they need to keep with them and show to staff for verification purposes. New Pool Table at The Hangout We have recently replaced the pool table at The Hangout with a new one. Come check it out! Closing Time for Changing Rooms Since December last year, the male and female changing rooms located at the Palm Wing are locked at 10.30pm daily to facilitate cleaning and preparation for the following day’s usage. Members are only required to sign-in their guests once at any of the guest sign-in points: Security Guardhouse, Main Reception, Palm Wing Reception and Club Twenty-Two. For example, a member bringing their guests to Atrium Cafe can sign-in their guests at Main Reception. After the meal, the group may want to adjourn to Club Twenty-Two. The member will need to produce the original copy of the guest sign-in slip to the staff at Club Twenty-Two to verify that they have signed in their guests. 5 REGULARS TRAVELOGUE My family and I celebrated Christmas in Nagoya, Japan two years ago. It was a one week free and easy trip where we visited places such as the Toyota Factory, Noritake Ceramic Shop, Osu Shopping Street and Nagoya Castle. The kids loved Nagoya as there were many fun and interesting places for them to explore. I particularly liked Osu Shopping Street. It is an area that melts both the traditional culture of Japan with the culture of today’s youth mixed with influences from abroad, creating an atmosphere that’s completely distinctive. – Benita Fong Christmas on a sleigh Outside Nagoya Castle Beautiful Christmas decorations in Marriott Nagoya Hotel lobby Ultraman - Osu Shopping District Mythical fish and dragon - Nagoya Castle 6 Kids loved the playground - outside Noritake Ceramic Factory Trumpet-playing robot - Toyota Kaikan Museum Can't wait to eat - Teppanyaki dinner SPECIAL The Beginnings of the SGCC Gardening Interest Group Check out our first harvest Early last year, member Paul Poh felt that something was amiss when he was exercising at the Club’s gym. It was the garden view outside the gym that caught his attention. He felt that the garden needed some sprucing up. He then asked his fellow gym “kakis” and they all agreed. With that in mind, one of his gym “kakis”, Clement Puah Neo suggested that perhaps they should form a gardening interest group where members can bond through gardening activities and at the same time, beautify the Club. Clement volunteered to come up with a concept and proposed the idea to some regular members during the Senior Members’ Gathering some time last April. During the session, several members registered their interest and the SGCC Gardening Interest Group was formed. The objective of the group is to promote gardening activities, camaraderie between members and a healthy lifestyle through gardening. The group worked closely with the Club’s management to identify suitable areas for gardening. The plot of land near the tennis courts at Heliconia Wing was identified as one of the areas. The group met almost every day to discuss how to make the land suitable for planting as the soil was uneven, infertile and had lots of clay beneath and also on how to sustain the expenses of the gardening activities. The group roped in John Hou, an award winning horticulturist as the Honorary Consultant. Fellow gardening members, Bob Chow and Paul Poh, who have many years of horticulture experience from tending to their gardens at home, gave some valuable input as well. Working on the soil Preparing the plot for planting Then with a plan in place, the group sought the help of the Club to purchase organic soil and worms to make organic compost for the garden. The group also brought their gardening tools from home to work on the land and worked daily from 7.30am – 10am to prepare three plots to plant their very first crop – spinach (bayam). Under the tender loving care of the group, the spinach was soon ready to be harvested. The group then shared their first harvest with fellow senior members during the once-a-month Senior Members’ Gathering last November. In order to sustain their gardening activities, the group was very resourceful and creative. They made nettings to screen out pests instead of relying on pesticides, sought donations of gardening equipment, sourced for recycled materials and turned them into useful items for the garden and even organized the sale of compost for members so that they can achieve better cost savings through bulk purchase. In their continuous effort to promote gardening activities, the group would like to invite more members to join the interest group. They plan to grow vegetables, legumes, gourds, herbs, fruit trees and flowering plants. The group also has plans to conduct visits to various parks, organise workshops conducted by horticulture experts and to share their experiences and knowledge with fellow members. Planting of spinach Harvesting spinach Benefits of Gardening • Excellent form of low-impact exercise • The sight, smell and sounds of the garden promote relaxation and reduce stress If you are interested in gardening activities, contact Iris Ong at 6398 5374 or iris_ong@sgcc.com.sg. 7 REGULARS KIDS Not Just Storytelling For kids aged 5 - 12 Fun Rock Crafts For kids aged 5 & above Date: Time: Venue: Charges: 7 March 2015, Saturday 10.30am - 12.30pm Casuarina Room $25.00 (Junior Gems Member) $28.00 (Member) $34.00 (Guest) Charges subject to GST. The movements are simple yet highly intensive as it alternates periods of short intense exercises with less-intense recovery periods. It is a form of cardiovascular exercise which helps to increase stamina and metabolism rate while strengthening all areas of the body. The exercises performed (at least 8-10 exercises); the amount of weight lifted and the repetitions and sets determine the intensity of the workout. Fit Training is advantageous as no equipment is needed, it improves stamina, tones various muscle groups and increases metabolism. Fit Box (11.20am – 12pm) Fit Box is a killer workout which alleviates contact with all pad work, punching bags, and gloves. It is a high-intensity cardio workout which exerts the spirit and physical demands of a kickboxer, yet, moves have been tailored to greatly reduce the possibility of injury.
