Also, stay tuned to the weekly Eagle Email for other volunteer opportunities that arise during the school year. HAVE A DIRECT IMPACT ON THE LIFE OF A CHILD Learning Buddy (Tutor)* – Provide weekly academic assistance before or during school to a student who needs reinforcement or remediation as directed by teacher. (Chairs: Michele Mangan, Kendra Neigoot) Lunch or Breakfast Buddy/Mentor – Develop a relationship with a child in need of a positive adult role model. Once a week or two times monthly. (Contact: Sharone Harris – sharone.harris@cms.k12.nc.us) Schoolmates Volunteer – Support our CMS Schoolmate partner, Billingsville Elementary, with your time and talents. Provide academic assistance for students, assist with Staff Appreciation, community support (book/clothing drive, book fair, curriculum support, etc), pep pals and other activities throughout the year. Any amount of time makes a difference. Flexible schedule. (Chairs: Anne Obeck, Jamie Scurry) Student Recognition – Recognize students who demonstrate Selwyn’s monthly character traits, assist with monthly certificates for students and maintain bulletin board in rotunda. (Chairs: Christie Hinshaw, Liz Bundon) SUPPORT AND APPRECIATE OUR INCREDIBLE SELWYN TEACHERS AND STAFF Staff Appreciation Volunteer – Assist with staff appreciation efforts throughout the year and during Staff Appreciation Week scheduled for March 16-20, 2015. (Chairs: Katherine Shaw, Amelia Abbott, Kathy Shields) A-Team Volunteer – Assist autistic team teachers with classroom responsibilities. (Chair: Wendy Lovelace) Classroom Support Volunteer – Assist literacy and math facilitators and classroom teachers with preparing resources for use in Selwyn classrooms. Can do from home! (Chairs: Missy Goodrich, Debbie Starling) EOG Proctor* – Assist in classrooms during end-of-grade testing in May. (Contact: Sharone Harris – sharone.harris@cms.k12.nc.us) Office Volunteer* – Want to be on the front line? Volunteers needed in the office for 2 hour shifts on a weekly or biweekly basis. (Chair: Chris Brenner) Health Safety and Wellness – Assist school nurse with health, vision and hearing screenings in the fall. Dates TBD. Help provide nutritional education opportunities for Selwyn community. (Chairs: Catherine Ohmstede, Monica Roush) ENRICH OUR STUDENTS’ EDUCATION Science Lab- Love observing firsthand how science engages and activates our children’s minds? Volunteer in the lab! Assist teachers in set up, clean up and execution of lab experiments. (Chairs: Caroline Coffron, Regina Farmer) Nature Trail/Nature Tales – Many opportunities await you on the Nature Trail. Assist with storytelling, science lessons and clean-up projects. (Chairs: Steve Carpenter, Mary Ellen McElroy, Jennie Hill, Alicia Wardlaw) Outreach/Inreach Volunteer – Assist with coordination and execution of grade level service projects. (Chairs: Julie Ahdieh, Barbara Climer) K_____ 1_____ 2_____ 3_____ 4_____ 5_____ Chess Club – Coordinate student after-school chess club under the guidance of the CMS Chess Club program. (Committee chair: Beth Guinan) STRENGTHEN THE SELWYN COMMUNITY BY HELPING WITH A SPECIAL EVENT Friday Night Lights – Work a shift to help carry out this fun family event – set up, face painting, hair painting, drinks, clean up, etc. on Friday, September 19, 2014. (Chairs: Ashley Hall, Carmalita Monroe ) Parent Party - Help plan, carry out and clean up after this awesome annual tradition in February. (Chairs: Jane Morrison, Kelly Huie, Kursten Callahan) Red and Blue Day – Field Day is a huge event and so much fun for the children! We need YOU to make it successful. Please plan to volunteer and join the fun! Monday, June 8-Wedesday, June 10, 2015 (Chairs: Meredeth Murr, Katie Davis) Red Ribbon Reading – Help to make Selwyn’s biggest fundraiser a success! Assist in the preparation and implementation of Red Friday on October 10, 2014. Assist in the Spring with logistics, financial and creative aspects of RRR kick-off! (Chairs/Co-Chairs: Trina Cone, Kerri Porter, Dawn Coleman, Catinna Sideris) Selwyn Celebrates the Arts – One of Selwyn’s finest traditions! Assist with mounting artwork throughout the year. Help set up, display and take down the fabulous artwork for our Spring PTA event scheduled for Thursday, April 30, 2015. Flexible daytime hours; all hands appreciated. (Chairs: Lisa Haner, Lisa Postal, Stacey Milam, Nicki Morrow) Selwyn Fun – Help set up, carry out and clean up after these wonderful community building events - Movie Night and/or Family Sock Hop, scheduled for Friday, November 21, 2014 and Friday, February 7, 2015 (Chairs: Greta Hord, Emily Browne, Gray Setaro) Book Fair – Volunteers needed to staff shifts at our Book Fair during the mornings of April 27th through April 30th, 2015 and the evening of Selwyn Celebrates the Arts, Thursday, April 30, 2015. (Chairs: Khaki Daniel, Shannan Ackerman, Ali Price) SUPPORT OUR SCHOOL AND PTA Art Support – Assist with mounting and displaying artwork throughout the school building. Great way to have handson involvement around the school and interaction with the staff! Flexible scheduling. (Chair: Annie Lord) Campus Beautification - Bring your green thumb to campus! (Chairs: Karey Tom, Heather Price) Green - Assist with Green education and recycling efforts. (Chairs: Andrea Green, Christy Parbst) Hospitality Volunteer – Be the “hostess with the mostest” for various school events. (Chairs: Caryn Sachar, Beth Stephenson, Dawn Van Osdell) Transferring Family Mentor – Mentor a new family entering Selwyn in grades 1-5 by answering questions, offering information, and/or having a meet and greet before school starts. Involvement of the mentor family will vary depending on needs/wants of the transferring family. (Chairs: Laura Patton, Elizabeth Hall) Prospective Parents - Assist with prospective parents’ events and welcome initiatives-Open House (Oct. 9, 2014) and Beginner’s Day (May 1, 2015). (Chairs: Anne Lam, Tiffany Matchett, Vivian Munson) School Store – Assist with school merchandise sales at special events. (Chairs: Susan Hoover, Dabney Estile) Tour Guide* – Share your love of Selwyn School with prospective families. Tours occur in the mornings. (Chair: Trina Cone) Share your unique talent and expertise with Selwyn School! Selwyn parents have a wealth of knowledge, vocational backgrounds and other experiences that are invaluable in supporting our students’ learning.
