You can decide which of the elements on offer are most helpful to you, choosing from reflections, guided prayer, silence and an opportunity to meet with a spiritual director. The day ends with a celebration of Mass. Accommodation may be available on the night before or after an Oasis day. Dates: Saturday 19 July 2014, Saturday 9 August 2014, Saturday 27 September 2014, Saturday 1 November 2014, Saturday 6 December 2014. Cost: €50 We believe there is a need for spiritual guidance in our society, for people willing to walk with others in their journey of faith. Training in spiritual direction has been offered in Manresa for almost 40 years and is currently given in the form of a two-year course consisting of seven weekends each year. This course will prepare you for the ministry of guiding others in their faith lives. Application forms for the 2015-2017 course will be available from January 2015. The closing date for receipt of applications will be 30 April 2015. Diploma in the Ministry of Spiritual Direction Spiritual direction usually takes place on a monthly basis for about an hour. Since it involves meeting a person individually, it is only possible for us in Manresa to accept a small number of people for spiritual direction. We are happy, however, wherever possible, to suggest a spiritual director living close to you from among those who have completed our two-year Diploma Course in Spiritual Direction. From the tradition received from Saint Ignatius, we in Manresa continue this ministry of ‘spiritual conversation’, or spiritual direction. In a trusting atmosphere and through respectful listening, we hope to help people to discover their own deepest desires and to hear the gentle voice of God calling to them in their hearts. Left to right: Fr. Finbarr Lynch, SJ, Fr. Laurence Murphy, SJ, Fr. Piaras Jackson, SJ, Fr. Ciary Quirke, SJ, Sr. Avril O'Regan, RLR, Fr. Mike Drennan, SJ, Fr. Brendan Comerford, SJ. Ignatius of Loyola often engaged with his fellow pilgrims in ‘spiritual conversation’. This was one of his more remarkable gifts. ‘He so adapted himself to those with whom he conversed,’ said one of his early companions, ‘that he evoked amazing movements in them. He had such insight into them that he almost seemed to enter into their mind and heart.’ N2 SLANE DERRY Spiritual Direction Monthly evenings (8:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.) beginning on Wednesday 17 September 2014 Manresa offers an opportunity to people on twelve-step programmes to deepen their awareness of themselves as they seek to improve their conscious contact with God “as they understand him.” Welcome Even as we continue to read about its dangers, the Internet grows in importance in everyday life. We are happy to see that Manresa’s website is accessed around the world and a growing number of people choosing to make the retreats in Ireland meet us first online. The technological achievement of global communications networks reflects the more vital network of prayer which we in Manresa are privileged to support. We hope to be able to welcome you for a retreat, for a day of recollection you may arrange to take on your own or with a group, or for any of the events we list here. The development of a new novitiate building in Manresa is an opportunity for us to upgrade our kitchen and dining services and to look at a better organisation of the house and its facilities. We hope to continue to offer retreats through 2015 and offer our schedule in these pages. Our website will have the most up-to-date list and will be able to take account of ongoing changes in the schedule. We invite you to look through this brochure and to consult our website to see what is on offer from September 2015 onwards. If something seems to promise life to you, we hope to see you in Manresa before too long and to accompany you in finding God in all things. Directed Retreats An Ignatian retreat means time given in silence, to prayer and reflection that fosters a deeper relationship with the Lord. God is active in our world and in our lives, guiding us, but in a busy world with many distractions we need time to be able to recognise God’s loving desires for us and to be more free to follow them. The retreat is a time for listening, receiving and allowing God to strengthen us as disciples of Jesus and in sharing more fully in his mission. 8-day Directed Retreats 8:00 p.m. Tuesday 2 September - 9:00 a.m. Thursday 11 September 2014 8:00 p.m. Tuesday 23 September - 9:00 a.m. Thursday 2 October 2014 8:00 p.m. Tuesday 28 October - 9:00 am. Donation. 4 evenings (7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.) beginning on Tuesday 23 September 2014 We rely a lot on words but sometimes they are not enough: our inner lives, our feelings, our consciousness often need other forms of expression. These four evenings present an opportunity to free our inner creative spirits by looking at and creating images, by considering how feelings, thoughts and memories are brought to life by what we see. Artistic ability is not necessary for participation. Monday 13 October -Tuesday 14 October 2014 Monday 10 November -Tuesday 11 November 2014 Tuesday evenings: 25 November, and 2, 9 and 16 December. Expressing the Creative Spirit Oasis Days Spiritual Exercises Open Evening 3 evenings (7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.) beginning on Tuesday 4 November 2014 The month of November is typically characterised by remembrance of the departed. Recalling our loved ones and considering our own mortality prompts deep emotions. This series of three evenings provides an opportunity to avail of some guidance in meditative prayer, taking account of our treasured memories, the situations of our lives, and of our hopes. This sequence of evenings will be based on some of Tony de Mello’s basic principles for wholesome living, using guided meditations and exercise of the imagination to prompt greater awareness of our giftedness and to open up new pathways to God. Tuesday evenings: 4, 11 and 18 November. Register by phone or web. Donation. John Callanan SJ has been a retreat-giver, writer, student adviser and chaplain for the past ten years prior to the parish ministry in which he is now engaged. He has written a number of books developing the insights of Anthony de Mello SJ, including The Spirit of Anthony de Mello, Dreaming with Anthony de Mello, Finding Fire with Anthony de Mello and Watering the Desert with Anthony de Mello. The Spiritual Exercises in their fullest form are made as a silent retreat over a thirty-day period or in daily life over a span of many months. Saint Ignatius proposed shorter adaptations of the Spiritual Exercises to suit various situations, so elements of the Exercises are now offered over periods ranging from eight days to just a few hours. These adaptations are not condensed versions of the Spiritual Exercises, but they are expressions of what lies at the heart of Ignatian spirituality: practical guidelines to help people come to know the God of love active in their lives, to face the obstacles that distort their relationship with God and with others and to follow Christ in the concrete choices of their lives. For more details, www.manresa.ie The Exercises in Daily Life (EDL) This form of the Exercises usually takes nine months or more, depending on the pace at which a person moves through the experience under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. It involves a commitment to daily prayer and reflection of about an hour-anda-half, as well as a weekly or fortnightly meeting with an experienced director. Making the Spiritual Exercises in daily life has grown in popularity in recent years and, while it may not have the concentrated focus associated with the thirty-day retreat, has the advantage of facilitating the integration of faith and prayer into daily life. As with the thirty-day format, entry into this retreat usually grows out of experience with shorter directed retreats, regular daily prayer and on-going spiritual direction. The retreat can be made at any time of the year, but it is particularly appropriate if it can start about September, because the course of the retreat then coincides - in most cases - with the celebrations of the liturgical year. For more details consult www.manresa.ie We hope that Spring 2015 will see building underway in Manresa: the plan is to provide a new novitiate building for European provinces and to enhance the Retreat House by the construction of new kitchen and dining facilities. We are happy to be able to continue to offer retreats during 2015 in the European Tertianship - the building in the quiet corner of the grounds. The Tertianship building will be used for some retreats in spring and during the summer - the retreat house Chapel and prayer room remaining available for optional use. The smaller setting, with its own chapel and dining room, promises a more intimate experience of retreat (even if ensuite facilities are not available throughout the building) and makes early booking advisable. Please consult our website www.manresa.ie to confirm dates, cost and availability. 4-Day Directed Retreats for Priests Tuesday 26 May - Saturday 30 May 2015 Sunday 31 May - Thursday 4 May 2015 5-day Directed Retreats Sunday 28 June - Saturday 4 July 2015 Sunday 5 July - Saturday 11 July 2015 6-day Directed Retreat Sunday 28 June - Sunday 5 July 2015 Tuesday 8 September - Tuesday 15 September 2015 8-day Directed Retreats Tuesday 17 February - Thursday 26 February 2015 Wednesday 18 March - Friday 27 March 2015 Sunday 7 June - Tuesday 16 June 2015 Tuesday 16 June - Thursday 25 June 2015 Sunday 12 July - Tuesday 21 July 2015 Tuesday 21 July - Thursday 30 July 2015 Sunday 2 August - Tuesday 11 August 2015 Tuesday 11 August - Thursday 20 August 2015 Thursday 20 August - Saturday 29 August 2015 Preached Retreats in 2015 6-day Preached Retreat - Jesus: our Way, Truth and Life (Michael Drennan SJ) Sunday 8 March - Saturday 14 March 2015 5-Day Preached Retreat - To Love and Serve in Everything (Laurence Murphy SJ) Sunday 5 July - Saturday 11 July 2015 5-day Preached Retreat - Meeting Jesus...
