Interesting Dates Throughout The Month Of October October 2 - National Custodial Workers Recognition Day. Give your custodial worker a big “thanks” today. At your school, church, place of employment, and a variety of other places, your custodial workers are silently at work all year long. They are the workers who clean and keep in good repair the facility that you enjoy. Express appreciation for all that they do to keep the facility sparkling and running in top condition. October 9 – Name Change. A year ago in October, the Center changed its name from the Peoriarea Blind People’s Center to the Central Illinois Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired. October 15 – White Cane Safety Day. This day celebrates and recognizes the achievements of the blind and visually impaired, and their independence. That independence is represented by the white cane that the blind and visually impaired uses to travel from place to place. The white cane is an invaluable tool and affords a blind or visually impaired person the freedom of movement they otherwise may not have. Also, October 15, 2014 is the 50th anniversary of White Cane Safety Day! October 16 – Dictionary Day. This day is in honor of Noah Webster, considered the Father of the American Dictionary. Noah Webster was born on October 16, 1758. Webster began to write his dictionary at the age of 43. It took him 27 years to finish it! In addition to traditional English vocabulary, it contained uniquely American words. October 31 – Halloween. Opening Eyes During Blindness Awareness Month According to the World Health Organization, 285 million people are estimated to be visually impaired worldwide: 39 million are blind and 246 have low vision. Globally, uncorrected refractive errors are the main cause of moderate and severe visual impairment; cataracts remain the leading cause of blindness in middle- and low-income countries. Although blindness and visual impairment occurs worldwide, how can we open eyes during Blindness Awareness Month locally? Here are a few suggestions. Whether you are a former or current patron or volunteer at the Center, have attended a Center sponsored event or have had some type of contact with the Center, share about your positive experience with the Center to your family, friends, co-workers, etc. Second, refer anyone you know who is blind or visually impaired who can use the Center’s services. Last, share your story of blindness or visual impairment if you are comfortable. Or share your positive experience being around those who are blind or visually impaired. When we share with one person this month, we will have made one person not only more aware about blindness and visual impairment, but perhaps dispel any misconceptions they may have had, and help them to understand the need for centers such as the Central Illinois Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
