TCU routs Oklahoma State
FORT WORTH, Texas (MCT) — Last
week was a long time ago.
The TCU Horned Frogs said it. Saturday,
they showed it.
Seven days after a wrenching loss that
appeared to ruin their hope for a conference
championship, the Frogs put themselves back
in the picture with a thorough 42-9 victory
against previously once-beaten Oklahoma
State.
Trevone Boykin threw for 410 yards and
three touchdowns, receiver Josh Doctson
caught seven passes for 225 yards and two
touchdowns, and tailback B.J. Catalon ran for
102 yards and two touchdowns.
The victory over the 15th-ranked Cowboys
means No. 12 TCU (5-1) has a chance to move
back into the top 10, perhaps as the Big 12’s
highest-ranked team following losses by Baylor
and Oklahoma earlier in the day.
At the very least, the Frogs are back as
contenders for the Big 12 title. They are one
of four teams with one loss in the conference,
all trailing conference unbeaten Kansas State.
And the Frogs get K-State at home in three
weeks.
Defensively, TCU rebounded as well. After
giving up almost 800 yards in the 61-58 loss at
Baylor a week ago, the Frogs held Oklahoma
State to 258.
Cornerback Kevin White and safety Derrick
Kindred each had interceptions, and OSU
converted only three of its 15 third downs.
It was another fast start for the Horned
Frogs. They led 14-0 for the sixth time in six
games in racing ahead to a 21-3 lead. In the
first quarter this year, TCU is outscoring its
opponents 80-27.

LA CROSSE — In his first game
back under center after switching to tailback the last two weeks
because of injury, La Crosse senior
quarterback Jack Garcia was in
fine form. Garcia threw for 98 yards
and a pair of touchdowns to senior
fullback Sheldon Schmidt, then ran
for 161 yards and three scores as
the Leopards won their third straight,
defeating Smith Center 48-14. Smith
Center fell to 4-3, while La Crosse
moved to 6-1. Senior tailback Andrew Jay added 17 carries for 148
yards and a score for the Leopards,
who return to Class 2-1A, District 7
play this week when they travel to
Leoti to face Wichita County (1-6).
La Crosse can secure a playoff spot
with a win. Smith Center returns to
2-1A, District 6 action by playing
host to Bennington (4-3) on Friday.

in an Eight-Man Division I, District 7

two scores as the Eagles won their
second straight game after backto-back losses. Dighton dropped to

In Oberlin, the Red Devils
eliminated the Quinter Bulldogs from
playoff contention. In its first season
of eight-man, Oberlin is 6-1 and
4-0 in Eight-Man Division I, District
8 action, and is one of three teams
still alive in the playoff race with
two games reamining — along with
Atwood-Rawlins County (5-2, 4-0
district) and Hill City (5-2, 3-1). Troy
Juenemann had 11 carries for 39
yards and scored twice for the Red
Devils, while Bryson Wesley added
seven carries for 43 yards and a
score. Kelden Breth also connected
on a touchdown pass to Tabor
Erickson as Oberlin put up 30 points
in the third quarter to end the game
early. The Red Devils can clinch a
playoff spot with a win against Rawlins County this week. Quinter travels
to Lincoln for non-district action.

At Oakley, Ellis’ playoff hopes
took a hit with a 20-12 loss to the
Plainsmen. Oakley, with its third
straight win, moved to 4-3 overall
and 2-0 in Class 2-1A, District 7
action. The Plainsmen can wrap
up the berth with a win at Plainville
this week. Ellis has just one district
game remaining in Week 9 against
Plainville. The Railers will play host to
Sublette this week. In order to make
the playoffs, Ellis needs a Week 9
win against Plainville and some help
from Plainville and La Crosse the
next two weeks to force a three-way
tiebreaker.

At Phillipsburg, the Panthers took
a step closer to a district championship by routing 1-6 Republic County.
The win was the Panthers fifth
straight since they fell to undefeated
Norton in Week 2. Phillipsburg has
averaged 43 points per game in
that span. Phillipsburg can wrap
up a playoff spot this week with a
win at Ell-Saline (5-2). An Ell-Saline
win would secure the district title.
Phillipsburg can earn the district
championship with a win, coupled
with a Smith Center loss to Bennington this week.

dropped its third straight contest by

Otis-Bison, though not technically
eliminated from playoff contention,
took a step in the wrong direc-
tion with its 46-28 loss to Beloit/St.
John’s-Tipton. The Bluejays, with
their high-powered passing attack
with quarterback Trey Dubbert, put
up 22 points in the second quarter,
only to see Otis-Bison battle back
with 14 in the third to narrow the
score to 34-28 by the end of the third
quarter. But two fourth-quarter TDs
put the game out of reach. Kade
Urban complete 7 of 24 passing
attempts for 74 yards, with two TDs
and two interceptions for the Cougars. Brad Lightfoot rushed 22 times
or 162 yards and a pair of scores,
but it wasn’t enough. St. John’sTipton plays host to Thunder Ridge
this week. A win by Thunder Ridge,
coupled with its Week 9 forfeit win
coming against Natoma, would put

play. Cedric Flax carried the ball 23
times for 128 yards and a TD, and
Fabrizius had 17 carries for 43 yards
and a score. Luke Heskamp had 104
rushing yards for Spearville. Trego is
at home this week to face Ness City
(5-2). Spearville faces Hodgeman
County (7-0) this week. A Spearville
win would clinch a district title for
the Lancers, while a Hodgeman
County win could end up forcing a
three-way tie. Trego needs to beat
Ness City and have Hodgeman
County lose for its playoff hopes to
stay alive.
