September/October 2014 – Launch of North Chiltern Trail with a Walking and Activities Festival To launch the North Chiltern Trail and as part of the Chiltern Society’s campaign to raise awareness of the opportunities for walking and other activities in the north Chilterns, we are holding a mini ‘festival’ of walking and other activities between 14 September and 6 October 2014. A range of FREE events have been organised to run alongside the launch of the North Chiltern Trail. Places are limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment. North Chiltern Trail - LAUNCH PROGRAMME September/October 2014 Sunday 14 September North Chiltern Trail Stage 1 Barton le Clay to Lilley The first of four Sunday walks covering the whole of the North Chiltern Trail. Approximately 10 miles and covering the delightful hills around Barton and Pegsdon. Quite a few hills with some steeper ascents and descents Meet and Park: 9.45am Lilley car park GR 118263 Leader: TBC. Thursday 18 September A cycle ride with the Chiltern Society Cycling Group. A circular ride of about 21 miles including Hexton, Apsley End and Pirton returning by 1.00pm for lunch. Thursday 18 September Andrew Clark’s Barton le Clay Walk Join the Chiltern Society’s chief walks designer, Andrew Clark for this circular walk taking in the wonderful hills surrounding Barton le Clay. Just over 6 miles, with a few steeper ascents and descents. Meet and Park: 9.45am The Chequers, Sharpenhoe Road, Streatley, LU3 3PS. The landlord has kindly given permission for walkers to use the car park, and would be delighted to serve you refreshments! Approximately 11 miles Meet and Park: 9.45am Whitwell Recreation Ground, Broadway GR 183 210 Leader: Carol Howe – 01442 249416 Sunday 21 September A guided circular walk off the main North Chilterns Trail A circular walk through Breachwood Green and King’s Walden taking in a few gentle hills and some marvellous countryside. 7 miles. Late lunch will be available at the Red Lion – menus will be circulated before the walk starts. Meet and Park: Meet at 11am at the Red Lion at Preston, Nth Herts SG4 7UD. Parking is available in the pub car park or in road on village square facing the pub. The Chilterns offers an extensive network of Bridleways in addition to the hundreds of miles of footpaths, and if you’ve ever fancied trying out horse riding, now’s your chance to take a taster session. Meet and Park: 9.45am Car park at LU2 7AE at junction of Warden Hill road and Links Way Leader: Trevor Tween Sunday 28 September North Chiltern Trail Stage 3 Whitwell to Great Offley The North Chiltern Trail continues, this time working a way from Whitwell northwards to Great Offley, and taking in some pleasant, rolling countryside. Meet and Park: 9.45am Great Offley roadside parking near the church GR 145 267 Leader: TBC Sunday 28 September Pathfinder Map Reading Course Warden Hills, Bedfordshire. 10.00-16.00. Are your walking ambitions limited by a lack of confidence in using a map to find the correct route? Our Pathfinder course is designed just for you! Suitable for age 10 plus, this day course covers a range of skills that will help you to navigate confidently around the countryside. Learn about map scales, grid references, contours, symbols and how to estimate the time it will take to do a walk. The day also covers your access rights and useful tips on clothing and equipment for the great outdoors.
