Description: 2014 is a special year for remembering events very important to our country. From the bravery of the
citizens and patriots 200 years ago that saved us from being ruled by a foreign land to the men and women who
courageously fought for freedom of opportunity for all Americans. We can now take the time to appreciate those who
worked so hard to create a better world for all while at the same time we can look individually at ourselves to see what
each one of us can do to continue to enhance the tapestry of America by focusing on the threads we impact.

Break-Out Sessions
Difficult Interactions
Presenter: John Plonski
Location: TBA
Director of Online Supervisors – IMAlive Virtual Crisis Center
Description: Generally, when we do our work we experience satisfaction. Someone calls for help, we assess their
situation and refer them to the help they need. We love our job. But sometimes we are left feeling hungry for
satisfaction because the interaction does not go the way we would like. Colloquially, not feeling the love! In this
workshop we will look at what happens in interactions that make them difficult. We will examine “who” is responsible
for such interactions. The answer may surprise you. Be prepared to discuss those times when you are not thrilled with
your job.
Options Counseling 101: Enhancing our Service Delivery
Location: TBA
Presenter: Emily Miller, MSW
MAP Options Counseling Program Manager – Maryland Department of Aging
Description: What is the relationship between I&A and MAP Options Counseling? Come learn about the core
competencies of MAP Options Counseling and how it is shifting the service delivery system.
Managing, Surviving, and Thriving on Change
Location: TBA
Presenter: Faed Hendry
Manager (Training and Outreach) – FindHelp
Description: One of the few things that is constant in the field and practice of Information and Referral is change. The
introduction of new programs and services, new technologies, funding allocation, new reporting requirements and
partnerships…..and that is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many reasons why we as individuals find change
difficult. In this interactive workshop we will learn how to manage change effectively.

issues; new information on groups that may be at an increased risk for suicidal behaviors; increased knowledge of the
types of interventions that may be most effective for suicide prevention; and an increased recognition of the
importance of implementing suicide prevention efforts in a comprehensive and coordinated way.
I&R Boot Camp
Location: TBA
Presenter: Chris Moore, CIRS-A
Senior Information and Assistance Specialist – Maryland Access Point, AACo. Depart of Aging and Disabilities
Description: So I’m an I & R professional...what now? This interactive workshop is designed to be an introduction to I
& R for those new to the field and a refresher of skills for seasoned professionals. In addition to the presentation,
attendees will role play and have an opportunity to apply the skills they’ve learned.
Managing Unmet Needs—What to Do When You Don’t Know What to Do
Location: TBA
Presenter: Faed Hendry
Manager of Training and Outreach – FindHelp
Description: It is Friday night and the caller is looking for an open food pantry. Another caller needs free dental
services. Someone else needs a shelter that would accept pets. We have all encountered inquiries like these. As an
I&R Specialist, there is not always going to be an idea situation for every presenting problem. No one likes having to
say no or I can’t or it’s not available but often there is simply no other choice. This session will explore: the difference
between the “hard no” and the “service no”, how and if to make referrals, the role of advocacy, creative problem
solving, and staying calm and ground in demanding and stressful situations.

MARYLAND AIRS INFORMATION AND REFERRAL AWARDS
Our profession is specialized and important but one with little public glory and recognition. The intrinsic knowledge that
you’ve helped someone and the occasional word of thanks is often our reward. A word of appreciation is extra special,
especially when it can be shared in a public forum. Therefore, Maryland AIRS is proud to accept nominations for the
Outstanding I&R Professional Award. As an Information and Referral/Assistance professional, we invite you to nominate
individuals and agencies for these prestigious awards and to attend our annual conference on October 17th to
congratulate the winners!
